Guiyang Eat well, walk the hills, leave a day for Qingyan

Stay in Guiyang for the food and a full city day, then add Qingyan if you have a second day. Breakfast noodles, a wooded hill walk and an evening by the Nanming River give the provincial capital a character beyond its role as a railway gateway.

The old centre is your best first base. Qianling Mountain, the provincial museum and Qingyan sit in different directions: choose a sequence instead of trying to collect them all between trains.

Choose one, two or three full days

Two nights, one full day: taste the city

Arrive the previous evening and stay in the old centre. Start with breakfast noodles, walk in Qianling Mountain Park, return for lunch and a rest, then visit Jiaxiu Pavilion around dusk and eat at Qingyun Market. This is a complete Guiyang day. Leave Qingyan and the museum out rather than spending the day crossing the city.

Three nights, two full days: add Qingyan

Keep the city day above. On Day 2, leave after breakfast for Qingyan, spend the late morning in the stone lanes, have lunch in town and return during the afternoon. Leave the evening open for sour-soup fish, a café or another food street. You can leave after that second full day, but a third night avoids combining an outlying excursion with a tight train departure.

Four nights, three full days: add context or slow down

Book the provincial museum for a separate morning, then return to the centre for lunch and an easy afternoon around the Penshuichi–Taiping Road area. Keep one hotel throughout. On a short rainy visit, swap the park for the museum if a reservation is available; on Monday, keep the outdoor city and food route. A third day is useful before a longer Guizhou journey, not essential for every visitor.

Places worth your time

1. Qianling Mountain Park · 黔灵山公园

Choose Qianling for a morning under trees rather than another shopping street. Forest paths, Qianling Lake and the climb towards Hongfu Temple offer different levels of effort. Start from the Zaoshan Road side, follow the signed lake paths and add a hill section only if the group is comfortable with steps.

You do not need to fit every summit, temple and animal enclosure into one visit. Keep time for lunch and the city later. Monkeys may approach paths: keep food packed away and do not feed or touch them. If steps are tiring, shorten the walk around the lower paths rather than buying a full set of optional rides.

Yunyan district: Qianling Mountain visitor information

Hours
Published park hours: 07:00–20:00. Visit by daylight; individual facilities have separate hours.
Tickets
Main park admission is free. Cable car and other separately charged facilities are optional.
Time
2.5–4 hours
Chinese address
贵州省贵阳市云岩区枣山路187号黔灵山公园
Getting there
Metro Line 3, Qianling Mountain Park (黔灵山公园), Exit C.
How to visit
Start in the morning; choose lake paths with an optional hill climb, then return to the centre for lunch.

2. Jiaxiu Pavilion and the river · 甲秀楼

The pavilion, first built in the Ming period, makes most sense as part of a walk along the Nanming River. Look across the water at the roofline, move along the bank for a second angle, then stay as the surrounding city shifts into its evening rhythm. The small scale is part of the appeal: this is a pause within Guiyang rather than a half-day monument complex.

Arrive before dusk to see both the building and the river clearly, then continue to dinner. The outdoor view works after interior visiting hours, so there is no reason to reorganise the day around climbing the pavilion. Lighting can vary; the route does not depend on a timed show.

Hours
Outdoor riverside visit works in daylight and early evening; interior opening is separate.
Tickets
No ticket or reservation for the suggested riverside walk.
Time
45–75 minutes
Chinese address
贵州省贵阳市南明区南明河畔甲秀楼
Getting there
Metro Line 1 to Zhongshan West Road (中山西路), then roughly 1.4 km on foot; a taxi to 甲秀楼 avoids that walk.
How to visit
Visit around dusk, then continue to Qingyun Road for dinner; allow travel time between the two stops.

3. Qingyun Market · 青云市集

This redeveloped market on Qingyun Road brings local snacks, restaurants and craft shops into a former industrial setting. Come hungry in the early evening, take a short look around, then choose either a proper sour-soup meal or several small snacks. Doing both usually means ordering too much.

It is a busy contemporary leisure district, not a preserved old bazaar. If you dislike the music and crowds, eat earlier or use Minsheng Road in the old centre for a more straightforward food stop. The market is a convenient introduction to provincial flavours; it is not evidence that every craft or dish comes from Guiyang itself.

Hours
Early evening is the recommended visit; individual stalls, restaurants and shops set their own opening hours.
Tickets
Browse the public market area; pay separately for meals, goods and any booked activities.
Time
1.5–2 hours including food
Chinese address
贵州省贵阳市南明区青云路青云市集
Getting there
Metro Line 1, Hebin Park (河滨公园), then about 1 km on foot; use a taxi from Jiaxiu if you have walked enough.
How to visit
Pair with the riverside at dusk, or come directly for dinner after a day trip.

4. Qingyan Ancient Town · 青岩古镇

Qingyan began as a Ming military settlement. Its stone construction, gates and lanes make a clear contrast with modern Guiyang. Start at an official entrance, follow the main street towards the southern Dingguang Gate (定广门), turn into side lanes, and leave time for a sit-down lunch. Expect a working tourism district with shops and restoration, rather than an untouched village.

For a first visit focused on streets, gates and food, choose basic entry. The government’s published tariff lists CNY10 for entry and CNY60 for a package; ask at the official gate ticket desk which interiors and wall sections the current product includes before paying. Upgrade only if those sites interest you and are open. Bring your passport for any identity check; if an online form will not accept it, use the staffed ticket desk instead of buying an unrelated tour package.

5. Guizhou Provincial Museum · 贵州省博物馆

The permanent history galleries bring the province’s archaeology and later history together, while the collection is particularly known for Miao clothing and silverwork. This is the useful choice before a longer trip through Guizhou if you want more context than a market souvenir display can provide.

Book through the official WeChat account 贵州省博物馆: 预约 → 入馆预约, or the 贵州省博物馆门户 mini-program → 预约参观. Select a visit slot and enter the visitor details. The public guide does not explain the foreign-passport workflow; if the form rejects your document, call +86 851 84811809 or +86 851 84811830 during opening hours before making the cross-city trip. Without a confirmed booking, keep the central city day and choose another morning for the museum.

Stay in the centre unless the departure dictates otherwise

Penshuichi: the most useful first base

A hotel near Penshuichi (喷水池) gives access to Lines 1 and 2, with old-city restaurants and Taiping Road nearby. This makes both airport arrival and the city itinerary straightforward. Pick the exact station walk and a quiet room over a vague “city centre” label; busy food streets can be lively late into the evening.

Dashizi–Zhongshan West Road: a food and walking base

Choose this central area if you prefer to walk out for meals and reach Jiaxiu on foot or by a short taxi ride. Check the distance to Line 1 before booking. Guanshanhu around the provincial museum suits a business stay, but puts you away from the two evenings in this guide. Guiyang North is a practical last-night choice for an early train, not the default sightseeing base.

Choose the room and arrival arrangements

Compare the total room price, cancellation terms, reception hours and luggage access in the hotel’s booking listing. For a late arrival, send the property the time and passport check-in requirement through that channel if it is unclear. No named hotel booking or room stay has been tested for this guide.

Airport, railway stations and local travel

Longdongbao Airport: Line 2 to the centre

Follow metro signs at Guiyang Longdongbao Airport (贵阳龙洞堡国际机场). Line 2 connects to Penshuichi; transfer to Line 1 there if your hotel is farther south along the old-city route. Use a signed airport taxi for an arrival after metro service, heavy luggage or an awkward final walk. Choose your hotel before choosing an airport shuttle—different buses serve very different parts of the city.

Official airport transport guide

Check whether the ticket says North, East or Guiyang

Guiyang North / Guiyangbei (贵阳北站) and Guiyang Railway Station (贵阳站) both connect to Metro Line 1. Penshuichi and Zhongshan West Road are convenient city-base stops. Guiyang East / Guiyangdong (贵阳东站) is a different arrival: a taxi to the hotel is the simple first-visit option. Do not arrange a North-station pickup for an East-station train.

Official Line 1 guide · China Railway 12306

Separate the old city, Guanshanhu and Qingyan

Walk within each compact stop and use metro or taxis between districts. At the metro station, select the destination on a single-ticket machine; if an app or payment setup fails, ask the staffed service counter for a single-ticket purchase. Keep your hotel’s Chinese name and entrance address saved for taxi drivers. Allow generous station and airport margins after an outing; a day-trip return is not a guaranteed timed connection.

Qingyan: use the route that works on your day

The reliable planning choice is Line 3 to Tongmuling followed by a taxi for the last section, or a direct taxi from the city. The published Tongmuling–Qingyan shuttle notice specifies weekends and holidays, so do not assume a weekday bus or reuse the old departure frequency. At the metro exit, use a taxi if the shuttle is absent. Arrange the return to Tongmuling from the same gate area before spending the afternoon deep in town.

Make meals part of the itinerary

Breakfast: choose your noodle bowl

Huaxi beef rice noodles (花溪牛肉粉) are an easy first breakfast. Changwangmian (肠旺面) is more specific: noodles with pork intestine, blood curd and crispy pork. Choose the beef bowl if offal is not what you want, and ask for chilli separately if possible. Minsheng Road in the old centre is a useful place to browse food choices before setting out.

Lunch or dinner: rolls, sour soup and small plates

Siwawa (丝娃娃) are thin pancakes wrapped around vegetable fillings and dipped in sauce; ask about the sauce and toppings if you avoid meat. For a shared dinner, choose sour-soup fish (酸汤鱼) or sour-soup beef with vegetables and rice. Agree on fish weight and total price before cooking. Chilli levels vary between dishes and restaurants, so asking for less chilli works better than assuming all “sour soup” is mild.

Guiyang food guide

Save Qingyan’s dishes for Qingyan

Try the town’s braised pig trotters (状元蹄), green rice tofu (青岩米豆腐) and rose-flavoured ice jelly (玫瑰冰粉). Share a trotter dish and add something lighter rather than turning lunch into a tasting challenge. Nuts, sesame and preserved-fruit toppings are common in the sweets; ask for the actual ingredients when that matters to your diet.

Qingyan food guide

Use Guiyang as a stop, not just a transfer

Weather changes the order, not the whole trip

The wooded park and stone lanes suit a dry day; bring footwear with grip for steps and wet paving. A light layer is useful in the evening. Put the museum on the wetter morning after booking, and keep food and the short riverside walk flexible. Guiyang’s appeal is the mix of everyday eating, hills and a nearby stone town, rather than one overwhelming landmark.

Beyond the city

Qingyan is the manageable nearby outing in this guide. Huangguoshu Waterfall, Libo’s karst scenery and the villages of southeastern Guizhou need their own transport and overnight choices; do not try to combine them as quick additions to a city afternoon. For a longer rail journey, compare dated services towards Chongqing, Guilin or Kunming on 12306, then plan the next destination around the arrival station.
