GUIZHOU · MODERN HISTORY AND TUSI HERITAGE

Zunyi A history-focused Guizhou stop: one city day around a pivotal meeting, and one climb through the gates of a mountain fortress.

Choose Zunyi if history is a reason to travel. The conference memorial explains a turning point in the Chinese Communist Party’s Long March, while Hailongtun takes you much further back, into the fortified landscape of the region’s hereditary tusi rulers. The contrast between a compact urban museum visit and stone gates high on a mountain makes the city more than one commemorative stop.

Allow two full days and three nights for the memorial and Hailongtun. One full day and two nights is enough for a city-only visit, with time for noodles and the old streets. Hailongtun is a substantial outdoor walk with steps; choose the shorter city version if that is not the experience you want. Do not expect a level museum circuit at the fortress.

Which places fit your visit?

  1. Start here1. Zunyi Conference Memorial · 遵义会议纪念馆 · 遵义会议会址

Exhibitions, the historic meeting-site building and the context of the Long March · Ziyin Road, Honghuagang old city

2–3 hours · General admission is free but requires the memorial’s entry procedure. Use 遵义会议纪念馆 for reservation; paid guided services are separate from admission.

  2. Start here2. Old-city lanes and Laosha food lane · 遵义老城 · 捞沙巷

A slower street-and-food break around the memorial district · Central Honghuagang, paired with the memorial

1–2 hours plus lunch or dinner · The route follows public streets; food, shops, performances and individual interiors are additional.

  3. Start here3. Hailongtun Fortress · 海龙屯

Mountain gates, walls and palace foundations within a UNESCO-listed tusi site · Northwest of central Zunyi, above Gaoping

Most of a day including road travel; allow 4–5 hours for the visit · Buy the dated 海龙屯 ticket and check whether the current product includes the visitor-centre shuttle. Current payable tariffs and passport handling must be confirmed before the road booking; no free-entry category is assumed.

Choose the places before booking the rooms

Zunyi visit areas: #1 Zunyi Conference Memorial: Ziyin Road, Honghuagang old city.; #2 Old-city lanes and Laosha food lane: Central Honghuagang, paired with the memorial.; #3 Hailongtun Fortress: Northwest of central Zunyi, above Gaoping.

Old city: the memorial, its surrounding streets and Laosha belong together. Hailongtun: a separate northwest excursion, with its own entrance, shuttle decision and substantial walk. The numbered places match the area diagram; it is not a turn-by-turn trail map.

Put the memorial on a confirmed open day and the fortress on the better-weather day. Do not add distant Chishui waterfalls or Maotai to this two-day city plan; they need their own regional travel arrangements. For a broader first introduction to Guizhou with fewer physical demands, compare Guiyang.

Choose a base that fits this trip

Honghuagang near the memorial and old city: the default. You gain a simple morning start and dinner choices on foot. Choose a property on a street reachable by car and check noise if its rooms face a busy food lane.

Huichuan or the newer commercial areas: useful when you prefer a modern hotel and are comfortable taking a ride to the old city. It does not eliminate Hailongtun’s separate road transfer.

Near Zunyi railway station: useful for an early train, less rewarding for a history-focused stay. Confirm the property’s Chinese address, room occupancy, cancellation terms and passport check-in. The worked plan uses three nights in one old-city hotel; no named property is claimed as personally inspected.

To find a room, open Zunyi hotel listings and enter your dates, two adults and three nights. Use the map to choose Honghuagang near the conference-site area; confirm the actual entrance, passport check-in and cancellation conditions with the property before paying. This is a booking search, not a checked room or a guaranteed rate.

Make the meals part of the day

Start one morning with 遵义羊肉粉: rice noodles with mutton and broth, with chilli adjusted where the kitchen can accommodate it. For another meal choose 豆花面, noodles and soft tofu, usually served with a strongly flavoured dipping mixture. A tofu dish can still have meat or meat stock in its sauce.

For two people, order one bowl each and share a small side if needed. Save 鸡蛋糕, the local egg cake, for a snack instead of making several noodle portions into one meal. Ask about nuts, sesame or other ingredients in the specific sauce if an allergy matters.

Eat lunch in the old city after the memorial. For Hailongtun, have breakfast before leaving and bring enough water and simple food to avoid depending on an unverified stall near the upper ruins. Choose dinner near the hotel after the descent; no special restaurant transfer is needed.

The places in detail

1. Zunyi Conference Memorial · 遵义会议纪念馆 · 遵义会议会址

The permanent displays give the meeting its setting: the Long March, the pressures on the Communist leadership and the decisions associated with January 1935. Give the documentary material time instead of treating the famous exterior as the whole visit. A translated audio guide, when available, may be more useful than following a group whose language you do not understand.

The historic residence and the exhibition have different roles. Architecture conveys the scale of the setting; the exhibition explains the event. The municipal report after the major conservation work confirms the ground floor reopened, while the upper floor requires a separate, limited arrangement whose general availability was not verified for this guide. The visit below remains complete without it.

Hours
Book the actual open-day session in the memorial’s channel; do not rely on an old daily or late-evening timetable. The plan below uses a morning visit and does not depend on night opening.
Tickets
General admission is free but requires the memorial’s entry procedure. Use 遵义会议纪念馆 for reservation; paid guided services are separate from admission.
Time
2–3 hours
Chinese address
遵义市红花岗区子尹路96号;遵义会议纪念馆游客服务中心
Getting there
Take a taxi to the memorial visitor-service entrance on 子尹路, or walk from a nearby old-city hotel. Keep a road-accessible pickup point for the return.
How to visit
Start with the exhibition and the parts of the historic building open to ordinary visitors. The latest verified reopening report confirms the main building’s ground floor; upper-floor timed access was still being prepared. Do not buy a tour on the promise that it guarantees upstairs entry.

2. Old-city lanes and Laosha food lane · 遵义老城 · 捞沙巷

Use this area to step out of the museum pace. Noodle shops, snacks and the rebuilt visitor streets are part of contemporary Zunyi, alongside its commemorative identity. The value is a meal and a manageable walk, not a claim that every shopfront is an untouched historic building.

The lane works best between the morning memorial and a restful afternoon. It is also the useful city alternative when bad weather cancels Hailongtun: eat well, take a short public-street walk and leave time for an exhibition you genuinely want to revisit. It is not a replacement mountain fortress.

Hours
Choose lunchtime or early evening for food. Individual businesses have their own hours; no nightly show is assumed.
Tickets
The route follows public streets; food, shops, performances and individual interiors are additional.
Time
1–2 hours plus lunch or dinner
Chinese address
遵义市红花岗区捞沙巷;红军街;子尹路
Getting there
From the memorial district, follow a current walking route to 捞沙巷. Use the main streets if narrow lanes are busy; take a short taxi ride back to your hotel if tired.
How to visit
Eat one substantial noodle meal and choose a short lane walk. If crowded, use a sit-down restaurant on a wider nearby street rather than turning the visit into a queue for a specific stall.

3. Hailongtun Fortress · 海龙屯

Hailongtun’s strongest feature is the relationship between its stone defences and steep terrain. Passing through successive gates makes the defensive logic visible. At the upper ruins, read the foundations and mountain setting together; this is an archaeological landscape, not a furnished palace.

UNESCO lists Hailongtun as one of the Tusi Sites, alongside two sites in other provinces. Its interest is the system of regional hereditary rulers and the way their power was expressed in a fortified settlement. The ascent, uneven surfaces and return walk are part of the choice: this is a poor addition for a traveller who has only a short museum afternoon to spare.

Hours
Use a morning entry and leave enough daylight for the descent and internal transport. Seasonal last-entry and shuttle times belong to the day’s operator notice, not an old blog timetable.
Tickets
Buy the dated 海龙屯 ticket and check whether the current product includes the visitor-centre shuttle. Current payable tariffs and passport handling must be confirmed before the road booking; no free-entry category is assumed.
Time
Most of a day including road travel; allow 4–5 hours for the visit
Chinese address
遵义市汇川区海龙屯景区游客中心;海龙屯遗址
Getting there
Arrange hotel → 海龙屯景区游客中心 → hotel. Take the operator transport to the signed walking start when available; the visitor centre is not the top of the fortress. Agree a return pickup and waiting terms before setting off.
How to visit
Follow the signed visitor circuit through the open gates to the upper ruins, keeping energy for the descent. Turn back before a closed or exposed section rather than using an informal bypass. In heavy rain, thunderstorms or very poor visibility, retain the city day and omit the climb.

A workable stay, from arrival to departure

Arrival evening · night 1: check in in Honghuagang, have dinner and complete the memorial reservation. Ask about the exact visitor-service route for your passport if the booking form cannot accept it.

City day · night 2: breakfast, the memorial’s morning session, then lunch in the old city. Walk Laosha and nearby public streets at a comfortable pace. Keep the afternoon flexible for reading exhibits longer, a rest or a short additional public-street walk; do not promise access to every associated historic residence.

Fortress day · night 3: breakfast and the booked road transfer to Hailongtun. Use the signed internal transport and walking circuit, carrying water and a snack. Descend while there is ample daylight, rejoin the agreed pickup and have dinner back in the city.

Departure morning: transfer to the station on your ticket. Swap city and fortress days when reservations and weather allow. If the fortress is unsuitable, the honest alternative is the one-day/two-night city stay, not a forced mountain outing in heavy rain.

Book the arrival and the return

Use 12306 to search Zunyi 遵义 from your actual origin and date. Trains through the Guiyang–Chongqing corridor can make the city a useful history stop, but this guide does not claim a particular frequency or journey time. Zunyi South 遵义南 is a different station; keep the station from your booked ticket in every pickup instruction.

For Hailongtun, book the round trip with a licensed vehicle provider or through your hotel, including waiting, tolls and pickup details. A one-way app ride into the hills does not arrange a return. The current scenic listing provides ticket enquiries at +86 851 23270077; ask for the dated admission/shuttle product and supported passport purchase method before committing to the transfer.

For the memorial, use its official WeChat account 遵义会议纪念馆. If the reservation form cannot accept your document, contact the visitor service at +86 851 28229870 for an assisted procedure. Carry your original passport; do not assume an older foreign-visitor walk-in rule overrides the current reservation and capacity arrangements.

A transparent budget for two

For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full days, use 3R + A + F + T + ¥660–940. R is your actual nightly room quote; A is the pair’s station transfers; F is the complete Hailongtun return vehicle with waiting; T is both adults’ dated fortress admission and internal transport. The editorial allowance is ¥480–640 for meals, ¥80–140 for short city rides and ¥100–160 for water and contingency.

Example inputs R = ¥280, A = ¥120, F = ¥400 and T = ¥200 give ¥2,220–2,500 for the pair. These four input values are planning examples, not checked quotes. General memorial admission is free; add the actual cost of any optional audio guide or guided service.

For the city-only one-day/two-night version, use 2R + A + ¥420–620, covering meal allowances ¥300–420, local rides ¥40–80 and contingency ¥80–120. With R = ¥280 and A = ¥120 that is ¥1,100–1,300. Both totals exclude intercity transport, shopping, distant Chishui/Maotai excursions and optional guiding.

Sources and planning conditions

Read on 17 October 2026. UNESCO supports the heritage description. The municipal reopening report and museum staff interviews distinguish confirmed ground-floor access from planned upstairs access. The museum register is used for identity, free general admission and contact details, not to revive its older walk-in or daily-hours rules. Hailongtun’s purchase listing is a platform source, not proof of a tested passport transaction. Durations, meal choices and budgets are editorial; no local ride, hotel or booking was field-tested.
