How many days and nights?
One full day: provincial museum and central river
Two nights give you a full day without fitting sightseeing around arrival. Reserve the provincial museum for the morning, eat lunch nearby, then use metro or taxi to Xiguan. Walk the bridge and, if you want the climb, Baita Hill. End with a central food-street meal. If the museum is closed on your only day, use the river, food and a slower city walk instead; the museum is not guaranteed by a train stop.
Two full days: add the documents of the Silk Road
Stay three nights, using the same central hotel. Keep the provincial-museum day above, then give the Bamboo Slips Museum the other morning. After lunch, return to the central river for tea or the Yellow River Mother sculpture. Put both museums on open dates. This gives the collections breathing room without adding a long road excursion.
An arrival evening is a useful extra
With only a few hours after check-in, go to the central river and eat locally. An airport connection is different: the airport lies outside the centre, and travelling into town consumes a separate rail or road transfer. Do not book a timed museum session immediately after landing.
Places worth your time
1. Gansu Provincial Museum · 甘肃省博物馆
Choose this before travelling west to Zhangye or Dunhuang. The useful thread is exchange: pottery from early communities, objects carried along routes through Gansu, and Buddhist art that makes more sense when you later visit cave temples. Start with the Silk Road display, then choose pottery or Buddhist art according to your interest.
The bronze galloping horse is the best-known collection highlight, but individual objects and rooms can rotate. Give the displayed collection time rather than rushing in for one photograph. The provincial museum is separate from Lanzhou Municipal Museum.

- Hours
- Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30; normally closed Monday except statutory holidays. Temporary changes appear in museum notices.
- Tickets
- Use the 甘肃省博物馆 or 这里是甘博 WeChat account → 票务预约. The museum publishes a three-day window including the visit day, with release at 09:00. Select your session and passport document type; bring the original passport used in the booking. Each document gets one entry per day. If no session remains, put the river walk first and try another open date; do not buy a supposedly guaranteed free-entry ticket from a reseller.
- Time
- About 3 hours
- Chinese address
- 兰州市七里河区西津西路3号,甘肃省博物馆。
- Getting there
- Take Metro Line 1 to Xizhanshizi / 西站什字. The museum’s June 2025 notice names exits C and D; follow current museum entrance signs from the station. A taxi to the full Xijin West Road address is simpler with luggage.
- How to visit
- Reserved session → passport verification and security → Silk Road gallery → one chosen collection → lunch near the museum.
2. Zhongshan Bridge, Baita Hill and the river · 中山桥·白塔山·黄河岸边
Begin on the south bank, where the bridge and white pagoda sit in the same view. Cross Zhongshan Bridge on foot and choose whether to climb Baita Hill: the uphill paths give you a better sense of the river valley, but the bridge and lower riverside already make a worthwhile low-effort visit.
The Yellow River sights are spread along a long corridor. Choose this central cluster first. If you still want a second walk, make the Yellow River Mother sculpture on the south bank a separate short taxi stop; do not assume the distant Waterwheel Expo Park is beside every place labelled waterwheel garden.

- Hours
- Use daylight for the hill paths; the riverfront is also useful around dusk. Follow any flood or weather closures and use the open public paths.
- Tickets
- The suggested route uses the public bridge and riverbank on foot. Boat trips, sheepskin rafts and the cableway are optional purchases with their own operating conditions; none is needed to complete this visit.
- Time
- 2–3 hours; less without the hill
- Chinese address
- 兰州市城关区中山桥;北岸白塔山公园;黄河母亲雕塑在南滨河中路。
- Getting there
- Metro Line 1 to Xiguan / 西关, then walk north toward the river. Finish at the bridge for a central taxi pickup or return toward Xiguan for food.
- How to visit
- South-bank view → walk across the bridge → optional uphill loop → descend before dark → return to the south bank for tea or dinner. If climbing is unsuitable, stay on the lower paths.
3. Gansu Bamboo Slips Museum · 甘肃简牍博物馆
Choose this if the details of everyday history interest you. Letters, records and strips of writing turn the Silk Road from an abstract trade route into the work of messengers, soldiers and officials. The themes include the age of slips, Silk Road connections, frontier households and writing on slips and silk.
It rewards reading and a slower visit, so it is the natural extra for a second full day rather than another compulsory museum on the first. The interpretation is the attraction: a visitor interested mainly in a skyline view can instead spend longer on the central river.

- Hours
- Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30; normally closed Monday except statutory holidays.
- Tickets
- General admission is free. Use 甘肃简牍博物馆 WeChat → 参观服务 → 预约服务, or the museum reservation portal. The authority confirms a staffed on-site reservation channel: bring your passport for help if the online form cannot accept it. A successful passport transaction has not been tested; if staff cannot register your visit, keep the river-and-food plan.
- Time
- 2–3 hours
- Chinese address
- 兰州市七里河区银滩南路12号,甘肃简牍博物馆。
- Getting there
- Metro Line 1 to Matan / 马滩, followed by about 1 kilometre south, or taxi to the museum entrance. This is a separate west-city outing.
- How to visit
- Morning entry → the Silk Road and frontier-life displays → handwriting section if interested → lunch → return to the same hotel.
4. Zhengning Road and the central food streets · 正宁路夜市·南关
Use the evening to try something beyond breakfast noodles. Walk the food street once, choose a savoury dish first, then add one sweet bowl. Milk, egg and fermented rice are cooked together for 牛奶鸡蛋醪糟; sweet fermented grain and pea-based desserts offer different textures.
The busy stall street works for browsing, while a sit-down restaurant around the central neighbourhood is better when you want a complete lamb-and-vegetable meal. You do not need to queue at one famous stall to understand the food.
China Cultural Centre: Lanzhou visitor and food guide
- Hours
- Visit during the dinner period; individual stalls and restaurants keep their own hours.
- Tickets
- Order at each business. Ask whether lamb or sliced meat is priced by portion or weight, and read the total before paying.
- Time
- 1½–2 hours with food
- Chinese address
- 兰州市城关区正宁路夜市;南关十字周边餐饮街巷。
- Getting there
- Walk from a nearby central hotel or take a short taxi ride. Pick a return point outside the busiest pedestrian frontage.
- How to visit
- Short browse → main savoury choice → one dessert → hotel; keep a full meal separate from any tight onward train.
Choose a base on this long city’s useful axis
Default: Xiguan and the central river
Choose a hotel near Xiguan / 西关 for the bridge, food and Line 1. Check the exact entrance on a drivable street rather than selecting a distant property because it uses “Yellow River” in its name. This base works for one or two sightseeing days.
For an early train: Lanzhou West
Stay by Lanzhou West / 兰州西站 if a late rail arrival or early westbound departure dominates the visit. It puts the provincial museum closer but makes the central river an outing. Lanzhou / 兰州站 is a different station in the older centre; choose it only for a ticket that actually uses it.
Book the neighbourhood you have chosen
On your accommodation platform, enter Lanzhou + Xiguan, the dates, guests and bed type. Compare the walking route to the metro and the taxi entrance. These are area recommendations; no individual hotel or live room rate is being promised.
Use the current airport station and the exact train name
Zhongchuan Airport T3 → city
Follow T3 signs to Zhongchuan Airport East / 中川机场东站, the connected railway station. On China Railway 12306, search from 中川机场东 to 兰州西 or 兰州 for your actual date, then choose the arrival station that matches your hotel. This is a scheduled railway journey with ticketing and security, not a turn-up metro service. Leave landing, luggage and station time before the train. If the next train is unsuitable, use the airport’s staffed bus counter or licensed taxi rank.
Search China Railway 12306 · Official T3 rail-connection information
Lanzhou West and Lanzhou are different stations
For an Xiguan hotel from Lanzhou West, Metro Line 1 toward the centre is useful; a taxi is easier with large luggage. Keep the Chinese station name from your ticket for the return. The central river, provincial museum and Bamboo Slips Museum are separate clusters: use Line 1 or taxis between them, and walk within each cluster.
Order noodles in the morning, then broaden the meal
Beef noodles: choose the noodle, then the extras
Order 牛肉面 / niurou mian for breakfast or lunch. Choose the noodle width; “细的 / thin” is an easy starting request. Ask for less chilli oil with 少辣. A basic bowl is not a large serving of sliced meat, so order extra beef separately if wanted and check its portion price.
A second meal and a small sweet
For dinner, share 手抓羊肉 / shouzhua yangrou, vegetables and a starch, or make a smaller meal from 酿皮 / niangpi and a cooked dish. Try 甜醅子 / tianpeizi, fermented grain, or 灰豆子 / huidouzi, a sweet pea preparation. Milk-and-egg fermented-rice soup contains dairy and egg; the fermented dishes are unsuitable when you require strictly no alcohol.
Continue west with a new overnight base
Use Lanzhou to begin, not compress, the corridor
Zhangye and Dunhuang merit their own overnight stays. Reserve any essential next-city admission before fixing a tight train sequence, and check the actual station on 12306. Xining is a different branch of the trip; choose it for a Qinghai route rather than adding it as a rushed return excursion.
