Choose Yinchuan for the Xixia Imperial Tombs, the Helan Mountain setting and a city food stop. Two full days let you understand the region in Ningxia Museum, walk the old city and give the tombs a proper outing. Stay another day if the Helan rock carvings are also a priority.
The main choice is how much time to spend outside the city. The tombs, rock-art valley and city centre are separate journeys; putting every attraction with “Helan” in its name into one day means more driving and less looking. This plan keeps one city day and one tomb day, with a confirmed ride back to the same hotel.

A city day, a tomb day, then an optional valley day

Two full days: the useful first stay
Arrive, check in and have an easy dinner. On the first full day, visit Ningxia Museum on an open morning, have lunch in Jinfeng, rest, then walk from the Drum Tower toward Yuhuang Pavilion in Xingqing and eat nearby. On the second day, take the confirmed return outing to the Xixia tombs. Give the museum and tomb route time, then return to the city for dinner.
One full day: choose history or the city
If the tombs are why you came, book that outing and leave only a short evening meal in town. If transport, weather or admission is unresolved, use the museum and old-city plan. Do not promise both museums and a distant valley on a single short stop.
Three full days: add Helan rock art
Keep the core two-day plan and add the rock-art valley with its own return transport. A winery visit can replace that extra day if wine is the main interest, but needs a specific estate, a confirmed appointment and a driver; this guide does not promise an unbooked tasting circuit. Zhongwei’s desert attractions are a different destination, not an extra stop on the tomb day.
For an evening arrival, two complete sightseeing days and a morning departure, book three nights. Put the museum on an open day and the outdoor outing on the better-weather day. Carry water and sun protection; use the city alternative during strong wind or a site closure.
Stay in the old city for evenings, or Jinfeng for the museum
Default: Xingqing around the Drum Tower / 鼓楼 and Jiefang Street / 解放街. This gives the short stay an easy evening food-and-landmark walk. Pick a hotel with a vehicle-accessible entrance rather than one requiring a long luggage walk through a pedestrian lane. The trade-off is an extra cross-city journey to the museum and western outings.
Jinfeng near People’s Square / 人民广场 suits a museum-first visit and travellers who prefer larger roads and straightforward car pickups. You give up the old-city evening at the doorstep. The Yinchuan railway-station area / 银川站 is useful for an early train, but it is not the old centre and does not remove the need to arrange rural return transport.
Search a booking provider such as Trip.com hotels for Yinchuan, your full stay and every guest, then switch to its map and compare properties within the chosen district. Check the exact entrance, cancellation policy and bed arrangement. Confirm foreign-passport check-in and any late arrival with the property before a non-refundable payment. These are neighbourhood choices, not inspected or ranked hotel recommendations.
Give a lamb meal time, and keep lunch close to the outing
Shouzhua yangrou / 手抓羊肉 is a simple cooked-lamb dish served with accompaniments; order a shared portion, vegetables and a staple rather than a large meat order for each person. Where sold by weight, confirm the unit, weight and final charge. Yangzasui / 羊杂碎 is a lamb-offal soup: choose it because you want offal, not because an English menu calls it only “lamb soup”.
For a quicker meal, look for noodles or chaohubo / 炒糊饽, strips of flatbread cooked with meat and other ingredients. Ask about chilli and broth. Around the old-city walk, choose a seated meal near your final stop; after the provincial museum, eat in Jinfeng before the taxi east. On either rural outing, carry water and have lunch before the return pickup instead of adding an unrelated cross-city food detour.
Check ingredients directly if you avoid meat, sesame or other allergens. At a halal establishment, follow its house rules and do not bring outside pork or alcohol. Packaged goji berries can be a practical food purchase; check the label, sealed weight and your destination’s import rules before buying them to take abroad.
Separate hotel, rural transport and admission costs
For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full sightseeing days, use 3R + T + A + CNY 500–800. R is the actual nightly room total; T is the agreed return tomb transfer for the party; A is the two actual tomb tickets plus any chosen internal transport or extras. The CNY 500–800 is an editorial spending allowance for simple meals over the stay and city transport, not a measured market average or live quote.
Worked inputs only: R = CNY 350, T = CNY 400 and A = CNY 200 give CNY 2,150–2,450 for the pair, or CNY 1,075–1,225 each. The room, car and admission-package inputs are not advertised offers; replace all three with dated totals. The published main-admission reference alone is 2 × CNY 68 = CNY 136, and the actual A must include whichever internal transport you select.
This excludes travel to and from Yinchuan, airport transfers, shopping, private guides, winery visits and the optional rock-art day. For a third full day, add one room night, both people’s meals and the actual extra return transfer and tickets. Ask whether the car quote includes waiting, tolls and parking; an outbound ride is not a return-trip quote.
Choose the tombs for one outing and rock art for another
1. Xixia Imperial Tombs · 西夏陵
The surviving earth forms are the reason to come. Read the museum displays first, then look at the tomb precinct against the mountains: this is an archaeological landscape, not a collection of intact palaces or an underground tomb tour. The contrast between the modest-looking remains and the former kingdom is part of the visit.
UNESCO inscribed the cemetery in 2025. Its significance comes from the Tangut dynasty and the meeting of different cultural traditions, rather than a resemblance to Egyptian pyramids. Follow the visitor route and the tomb areas included in your admission; the entire protected cemetery is much larger than a normal tourist circuit.
Hours
The tourism authority lists 08:00–17:00. Visit in the morning; confirm the last admission and internal-vehicle return for your date before leaving the city. Seasonal or weather notices can change access.
Tickets
The official directory lists CNY 68 for main admission. Treat that as a published reference, not an all-inclusive live quote: sightseeing vehicles, extra tomb circuits, films, VR and guides may be charged separately. Use the attraction’s official 西夏陵 account or visitor service, +86 951 5668966, to select the museum-and-tomb visit and confirm the current vehicle inclusion. Foreign-passport checkout was not tested. Ask the service desk for its accepted booking and document-check method before paying for a non-refundable transfer; bring the original passport.
Time
Allow roughly 3 hours at the attraction as a planning allowance, plus both road journeys, lunch and pickup time. Keep a full day available if you want a guide or additional open tomb areas.
Chinese address

Getting there
The tombs are a road excursion west of the built-up city. The simplest first visit is a licensed taxi or booked car with an agreed return pickup at the visitor centre. Ask for the total including waiting, tolls and parking. A seasonal tourist bus is an option only once the operator confirms both the departure and return for your date; no unverified bus timetable is assumed here.
How to visit
Visitor centre and document check → museum → included internal transfer and signed tomb route → return to the visitor centre → agreed pickup to Yinchuan. If wind, closure or admission prevents the outing, keep the museum-and-old-city day in town and move the tomb visit to an available day.
2. Ningxia Museum · 宁夏博物馆
Use the regional-history displays to connect the Yellow River plain, trade and the Xixia period before visiting the tombs. Look for the changes in material and writing rather than trying to read every label. The museum and the tomb-site museum overlap in theme but serve different purposes: one introduces Ningxia, the other explains the cemetery.
This is also the practical indoor half-day for poor weather. Collections and loans change, so no individual object is promised on display. Choose an open morning and leave time for lunch in Jinfeng before moving east to the old city.
Hours
The museum’s regular-opening notice, reproduced on Sohu, gives Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30, with Monday closure except statutory-holiday arrangements. A newer museum notice or the actual reservation takes priority.
Tickets
Book through the official WeChat account 宁夏博物馆; the regular notice allows reservations up to three days ahead. Main admission is free; guides are separate. The published notice does not resolve the foreign-passport form, and we did not test it. If your document cannot be entered, ask visitor service at +86 951 5085093 for an accepted arrangement before making the museum the day’s anchor. Bring the original passport. Do not assume a general assisted-entry provision guarantees walk-in admission to every foreign visitor.
Time
2–3 hours, plus lunch and the transfer to Xingqing. The two districts are not one continuous sightseeing walk.

Getting there
Take a licensed taxi or a current local bus route to 宁夏博物馆 / 人民广场. Show the full Chinese name: this is not the separate 西夏博物馆 at the tomb attraction.
How to visit
Reserved morning session → regional-history galleries → lunch near People’s Square → taxi to the old city or a hotel rest. On a normal Monday, swap the order of your two days. If admission cannot be arranged, keep a relaxed old-city and food day rather than buying an unofficial reservation.
The Drum Tower and Yuhuang Pavilion give a short walk recognizable landmarks without needing a whole day of monument collecting. View their rooflines from the public streets, then continue into the surrounding commercial lanes. This is the working old centre of a modern city, not a preserved medieval town.
The short route is useful after travel or a museum morning. Keep building interiors optional: the walk and a lamb or noodle meal still work if the small exhibitions are closed. Use pedestrian crossings around the landmarks rather than stepping into the road for photographs.
Hours
Walk in daylight for the architecture and around a normal meal period for food. Individual buildings, exhibitions and businesses have their own hours; this route does not depend on evening interior access.
Tickets
No admission or reservation is required for the public streets. If a building is open, check its entrance notice before joining the visit. No interior fee or passport-admission guarantee is assumed.
Time
1–2 hours for the exterior landmark walk, longer with a sit-down meal and shopping.

Getting there
Start at 银川鼓楼 and continue along the signed streets to 银川玉皇阁; both are in Xingqing. This is an east-of-museum cluster, so use a taxi between districts if combining them.
How to visit
Drum Tower street view → Yuhuang Pavilion exterior and any open display → seated meal in the old-city district → return to the same hotel. If walking becomes tiring, end at either landmark and use a roadside taxi pickup.
4. Helan Mountain Rock Art · 贺兰山岩画
Choose the rock-art valley when the relationship between a landscape and its early images interests you. The forms can be small and easy to miss: use the marked interpretation stops and a guide or official explanation if available. Looking carefully at a few panels is more rewarding than hurrying along the whole trail.
This is not the Helan Mountain forest park and its access is not interchangeable with the tombs. Keep to the designated visitor path, leave carvings untouched and do not expect a long mountain hike to be included in the ticket.
Hours
The tourism authority lists 08:00–18:00. Confirm seasonal last entry, any valley closure and the final internal ride before departure, especially in poor weather.
Tickets
The official attraction directory lists CNY 60 main admission. Confirm the dated product and whether internal vehicles or other displays add a charge with visitor service, +86 951 3948806. Foreign-passport checkout and concession eligibility were not tested; arrange an accepted admission method and carry the original passport.

About 3 hours on site as a planning allowance. Reserve the day for the two road journeys, the visitor route, a meal and a flexible return.

Getting there
Book a return car to 贺兰山岩画景区游客中心, with pickup time, exact meeting point and waiting costs agreed. Do not send the driver to 贺兰山国家森林公园. For a tourist bus, buy only after its actual return stop and time are confirmed.
How to visit
Visitor centre → included exhibitions and signed rock-art route → return to the same exit and your booked vehicle. If the valley closes, use the city day; do not improvise an unmarked mountain route.
Use the actual station name and arrange both rural legs
Yinchuan railway station / 银川站
Use China Railway 12306 for your origin → 银川, the actual date and each traveller’s passport details. The main station is west of the old city. Go to the hotel first, leave luggage and keep arrival-day sightseeing light. Do not confuse a ticket for 银川 with 河东机场 or another station in the wider region.
Yinchuan Hedong International Airport / 银川河东国际机场
For the simplest arrival, follow the licensed-taxi signs and show your hotel’s full Chinese address. The airport’s shuttle page identifies city destinations including the Western Airport Aviation Hotel / 西港航空酒店 in Xingqing; buy at the airport counter only after checking the current stop and final journey to your hotel. That page’s timetable is undated, so its old departures are not reproduced here. A late flight or unsuitable bus stop makes a direct licensed taxi the clearer choice.
If considering a train from 河东机场 station, search the actual date in 12306 and allow for baggage collection and reaching the platform. It is a scheduled railway service, not a turn-up-and-go metro; a sparse or unsuitable departure is a reason to use the road transfer. For departure, reserve time for hotel checkout, transport, terminal or station access and the carrier’s check-in requirements.
Inside and outside the city
Walk within the old-city cluster; use a taxi or a verified current bus route between districts. For the tombs or rock art, save the visitor-centre pickup pin, driver contact and return time before leaving. Ask the visitor centre to help arrange a licensed replacement if your booked car fails to arrive. Keep a fixed intercity departure off the same tightly packed rural afternoon.
Continue toward Xi’an or Lanzhou with a separate travel day
Xi’an provides a different imperial-history chapter; Lanzhou adds the Yellow River and Gansu Museum. Compare actual 12306 departures and arrival stations before assigning nights. A desert stay around Zhongwei needs its own accommodation and attraction transport; it is not included in the Yinchuan city plan or budget.
What was checked, and what remains date-specific
Sources checked on . UNESCO supports the tombs’ heritage status; the tourism authority supplies published opening and main-admission references, which are not live all-inclusive quotes. The museum’s regular-hours text is a museum-authored notice reproduced on Sohu, supplemented by Ningxia Daily’s visitor-service reproduction; the official museum website did not yield a usable current notice during this check. Foreign-passport reservations, concession claims, actual entry and rural return transport were not field-tested. Those remain confirmation steps with the named visitor services, with the city route as the usable alternative. Durations, combinations and budget examples are editorial planning choices.
