SHANDONG · SEAFRONT STREETS, WINE HISTORY & JIAODONG FOOD
Yantai Slow down along the northern coast
Choose Yantai for a relaxed seafront stay, old commercial streets and the history of Chinese wine. Two full days work well around Yantai Hill, Chaoyang Street, the Changyu museum and an easy coastal walk. The city is a good fit when meals and time by the sea matter as much as collecting monuments.
Penglai is a separate full-day outing, not another central street stop. Keep one Zhifu base for a short city visit; add a third day or a separate Penglai night if its pavilion and coastal heritage are your main interests. Rail arrivals need particular care: Yantai South / 烟台南 is closed for rebuilding, so use the station shown on an actual current ticket.

Two city days, with Penglai as the optional third
Open full-size map ↗. The central city visits and Penglai outing are separate blocks. Keep a Zhifu base for the city plan and use the actual ticketed railway station; no ferry or continuous coastal walk is implied. Two full days: a relaxed first stay
After an arrival evening, start the first full day at Yantai Hill, descend into Chaoyang Street and have lunch there. Rest, then take a short central waterfront walk and eat near the hotel. On the second day, visit Changyu in the morning if you have admission, have a seated lunch, then use the afternoon for Suochengli and an unhurried food stop. Revisit the waterfront if the weather improves rather than adding a distant attraction just to fill time.
One full day: choose the hill-and-street route
Keep Yantai Hill, Chaoyang Street, one meal and a modest stretch of coast. If rain makes the hill unsuitable, choose Changyu during its opening hours and shorten the outdoor section. Do not squeeze Penglai into the same central-city day.
Three full days: add Penglai
Retain the city days and reserve the third for Penglai Pavilion with return transport. If Penglai is the main reason for coming, stay there instead and give central Yantai its own shorter stop. Golden Beach in the western development zone and Yangma Island to the east are other coastal choices; they are different journeys, not interchangeable names for the central waterfront.
An evening arrival, two full city days and a morning departure need three nights. A third full day needs a fourth night on the same pattern. In cold or windy weather, reduce the exposed coast and use the museum and meals as the day’s anchors. This city plan does not require swimming or a ferry.
Stay in central Zhifu for the first city visit
Default: central Zhifu around Chaoyang Street / 朝阳街, Dama Road / 大马路 or the central seafront. This puts the hill, old streets, museum and evening meals within a manageable local area. Compare the exact address and road access: a “sea view” label does not tell you how far the entrance is from the walking route.
Yantai railway-station area / 烟台站 is practical for an early train and still serves the city stay, but the port and major roads make the immediate surroundings a different experience from a seafront hotel. The western development zone / 开发区 around Golden Beach suits a beach-and-resort stay; expect longer transfers for the old-city attractions. Penglai makes sense for a pavilion-focused visit, not as a convenient overnight base for both central-city days.
At Trip.com hotels or your chosen provider, search Yantai with every guest and all nights, open the map and stay within the selected base. Check bed type, cancellation and final price; sea-facing rooms and ordinary rooms are different products. Confirm foreign-passport check-in and late arrival directly before paying a non-refundable rate. No named hotel here is presented as inspected or personally recommended.
Try menzi, then make one seafood meal a seated occasion
Yantai menzi / 烟台焖子 is pan-fried sweet-potato starch jelly, usually with sesame sauce. It makes a manageable snack during the street day. A “three-fresh” version can add seafood, so check the ingredients rather than assuming every portion is vegetarian. Bayu shuijiao / 鲅鱼水饺 are Spanish-mackerel dumplings; the filling may also contain pork and chives. Ask about the portion size before ordering another main dish.
For a fuller dinner, choose cooked fish or shellfish, a vegetable dish and a staple. Where seafood is sold by weight, confirm the animal, unit price, weight and cooking charge before it goes to the kitchen. Keep a costly seafood order separate from the simple-meal budget below. If seafood is unsuitable, a noodle or dumpling restaurant with clearly confirmed ingredients is an easier alternative.
Have lunch around Chaoyang Street after the hill, and eat near Dama Road after Changyu. Use Suochengli for a snack stop rather than depending on a collection of snacks to replace every meal. In Penglai, Penglai xiaomian / 蓬莱小面 is a local noodle option; ask about its seafood-based toppings or broth. Wine tasting is optional, and a chosen tasting package does not make a private winery trip part of the city visit.
Price the city stay separately from Penglai
For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full city days, use 3R + W + CNY 650–1,000. R is your actual nightly room total and W is the combined price of the two chosen Changyu admission products. The CNY 650–1,000 is an editorial allowance for ordinary meals over the stay and local transport, not a market survey or a guarantee. The free public walks do not make hotel and transfer costs disappear.
Worked inputs only: R = CNY 400 and W = CNY 160 give CNY 2,010–2,360 for the pair, or CNY 1,005–1,180 each. Both numbers are calculation inputs, not quoted bookable rates; replace them with your actual room and museum package totals. Special seafood, substantial wine purchases and taxis to distant beaches can exceed the allowance.
For an extra full Penglai day with a fourth night, add R + P + CNY 200 admission + CNY 160–260 meals for two full-price adults. P is the actual return car quote, or both people’s return rail tickets plus the two local station transfers. CNY 200 uses the published CNY 100 general-adult reference and excludes optional rides. For an illustration with R = 400 and P = 600, the addition is CNY 1,360–1,460; P is not a transport quote.
Both plans exclude travel to and from Yantai, airport transfers, private guides, shopping, the lighthouse, extra tasting products, ferries and island accommodation. Get the car total including waiting and tolls; retain a return time before paying.
Give each part of the coast a different purpose
1. Yantai Hill and Chaoyang Street · 烟台山 · 朝阳街
Yantai Hill brings together the sea, the old port and the city’s history of contact with the wider world. Take the signed paths between former consular buildings and viewpoints instead of heading only for the lighthouse. The changing glimpses of water through the trees give the short climb its rhythm.
Continue down into Chaoyang Street for restored facades, cafés and a lunch stop. The street has been extensively renewed for present-day visitors; enjoy the architecture and shops without expecting an untouched historic quarter. If steep paths or steps are difficult, put more time into the lower street and waterfront rather than promising the hill as a level walk.
Hours
The culture authority’s warm-season schedule is 08:00–18:30 from May through October. Winter, individual indoor displays and the lighthouse can have different hours; follow the entrance notice for your date. Plan a morning visit rather than relying on late admission.
Tickets
Main hill admission is free according to the official listing. The lighthouse requires a separate ticket; its current price and passport process were not verified, so the core route does not depend on going up it. Chaoyang Street itself has no combined attraction ticket; shops and paid experiences are separate.
Time
Allow about 2 hours for a modest hill circuit and another 1–2 hours for Chaoyang Street, lunch and stops. These are visiting allowances, not walking-time guarantees.
Chinese address
烟台山景区:烟台市芝罘区历新路7号;朝阳街在山脚南侧。
Getting there
Use 烟台山景区 for the hill entrance or 朝阳街 for the lower street. From a central Zhifu hotel this is a local walk or short taxi ride depending on the exact address. Save the roadside pickup outside the pedestrian area.
How to visit
Hill entrance → signed historic-building and sea-view paths → return toward the entrance → Chaoyang Street → lunch. In strong wind, slippery conditions or closure, keep to the open lower streets and move the hill to another day.
2. Changyu Wine Culture Museum · 张裕酒文化博物馆
The old cellar gives this visit a physical focus: wine history makes more sense when you can see the spaces used to store it. The modern displays explain the company’s development and products, while the surrounding old-factory setting makes a change from the seafront walk.
Choose this for industrial and wine history even if you do not want a tasting. It is the city-centre museum at Dama Road, not Changyu’s separate Castel winery in the development zone. Ask which cellar areas and experiences the chosen ticket includes; promotional packages are not identical to basic admission.
Hours
The museum’s own visitor guide states 08:00–17:00, last admission 16:30, open throughout the year. Check its newer announcements and your selected visit product for exceptions.
Tickets
Use the booking QR on the official visitor guide or ask the museum visitor centre, +86 535 6633860; the front desk is +86 535 6632892. Confirm the dated admission, cellar access and any tasting or DIY inclusions before paying. The static official page does not give a dependable current package price, so no live fare is claimed here. Foreign-passport checkout was not tested; ask the front desk for an accepted purchase and entry method, and bring the original passport. If a package cannot be arranged, keep the public coastal route.
Time
2–3 hours for the museum and cellar, longer for a separately booked activity. Tasting is optional; use a taxi afterward if drinking alcohol.
Chinese address
张裕酒文化博物馆,烟台市芝罘区大马路56号。
Getting there
Walk or take a local taxi to 大马路56号 from the central seafront. Do not book transport to 张裕卡斯特酒庄, which is a different attraction far from this city-day route.
How to visit
Visitor centre and ticket check → exhibits → included cellar route → optional booked tasting → lunch or the public waterfront. If steps into the cellar are unsuitable, ask which accessible galleries are available before purchasing.
3. Suochengli and the central waterfront · 所城里 · 第一海水浴场周边海滨
Suochengli provides a different scale from Chaoyang Street: low courtyard buildings and small lanes rather than a line of larger commercial facades. It is also a restored and reused district. Walk the public lanes, stop for a snack and avoid treating residents’ doorways as a photo set.
At the central coast near the First Sea Bathing Beach, the useful experience is simply a walk beside the water. Make it as long or short as the weather and your energy allow. This is not a promise of year-round swimming, beach facilities or a continuous flat path along every part of the coast.
Hours
Use daytime for the coastal walk and ordinary shop hours for Suochengli. Beach facilities and supervised swimming operate separately; follow posted flags, closures and lifeguard instructions.
Tickets
No combined ticket is needed for the public streets or promenade. Pay separately for food, attractions or equipment. A public beach does not mean swimming is permitted or supervised whenever you arrive.
Time
About 1–2 hours in Suochengli plus a chosen stretch of waterfront, a meal and a local transfer. Shorten the coastal section in cold, rain or strong wind.
Chinese address
所城里历史文化街区:芝罘区南大街南侧;海滨步行目的地可用第一海水浴场。
Getting there
Use 所城里北门 for the lane district and 第一海水浴场 for the coastal stop. They are separate clusters; take a taxi between them if you do not want an extended urban walk. Use signed pedestrian crossings when heading between Chaoyang Street and Suochengli.
How to visit
Suochengli lanes and a snack → seated lunch or hotel rest → taxi to the central waterfront → short sea walk → dinner near your base. If weather makes the exposed coast unpleasant, keep the street-and-food half-day or use the Changyu museum during its open hours.
4. Penglai Pavilion · 蓬莱阁
Penglai is the choice when you want a more substantial historical outing than another city promenade. The pavilion complex and the old water-city setting connect coastal scenery with maritime defence and the stories of the Eight Immortals. Go for the architecture and setting; a mirage is not an experience anyone can schedule.
Be precise about the attraction name. Penglai Pavilion / 蓬莱阁 is not the separate Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea / 八仙过海 attraction. A ticket or driver booking for one does not automatically include the other.
Hours
The culture authority gives a usual 08:00–17:00 schedule with peak-season extensions; its warm-season listing gives 08:00–18:00 with 17:00 last entry. Use the date-specific 蓬莱阁景区 notice when booking and aim for a morning arrival. Do not build the return around the latest possible entry.
Tickets
The official tourism listing gives CNY 100 for general adult admission. Use the official WeChat account 蓬莱阁景区 and choose the actual date and entry product; cableway, films and other extras are not assumed included. Ask visitor service, +86 535 5621111, about current foreign-passport purchase and manual verification if the form rejects your document. Checkout was not tested. Bring the original passport; do not assume a local-resident promotion applies to a visitor.
Time
Allow 3–4 hours on site as a planning allowance, plus lunch and both transfers. Steps and slopes make a rushed visit less useful.
Chinese address
蓬莱阁景区,烟台市蓬莱区北关路1号。
Getting there
The simplest day trip is a confirmed return car from your Yantai hotel to 蓬莱阁景区, with the return pickup, waiting and total charge agreed. For rail, search actual Yantai-area departures to 蓬莱 in 12306 and reserve both directions only if they leave enough visiting time; the station still requires a local road transfer to the pavilion. Do not assume a direct train runs at a convenient time. If neither option fits, stay in the city or add a Penglai night.
How to visit
Morning transfer → admission at the booked entrance → pavilion and the included heritage areas → lunch in Penglai → confirmed return pickup or station transfer. Leave Changdao’s ferry-dependent islands for a separately arranged trip; do not add them before a fixed same-evening train or flight.
Use the current rail station, and allow for the airport road trip
Rail: Yantai / 烟台, with the actual ticket in hand
Yantai South / 烟台南 stopped passenger service on 28 October 2025 for rebuilding. The official closure announcement planned completion for 30 June 2027; the city’s 2026 progress update still describes that as a construction target, not a confirmed reopening. Do not use old “arrive at Yantai South” directions while the station is closed.
Search 12306 for your date and check the exact station on the train you can buy. Yantai / 烟台 station is the useful central-city target; services may instead use other stations such as Muping / 牟平 or Penglai / 蓬莱. Those are not adjacent to the Zhifu hotel district. Compare the onward road transfer before choosing a cheaper or earlier train, and send the driver the ticket’s station name.
Yantai Penglai International Airport / 烟台蓬莱国际机场
The airport is outside central Yantai; keep the arrival evening free of timed attractions. The airport’s current bus page directs passengers to the T2 arrivals-hall ticket counter at Door 6 and to the WeChat account 烟台交运机场巴士 for current stops, prices and departures. Show the full hotel address and confirm whether the route serves central Zhifu, Penglai or another district before buying.
A licensed taxi to the hotel is the simpler alternative when the bus stop does not fit, the flight is late or luggage makes another transfer awkward. Follow your airline’s actual terminal and the signed taxi pickup. For departure, allow the road transfer plus your airline’s required airport lead time; do not put a distant Penglai excursion before a tight flight.
Local transport and return plans
Walk inside each cluster and use a taxi or a current local bus route between them. Central streets, Golden Beach, Penglai and Yangma Island are different distances and directions; choose a destination name before ordering a car. For a rural or coastal outing, save the return pickup and driver contact. If the car fails, ask the staffed visitor centre to help arrange a licensed replacement rather than waiting on an isolated stretch of coast.
Add Qingdao with its own nights
Qingdao is a useful continuation for another port-city perspective, beer history and its own coastal districts. Jinan changes the theme to springs and the provincial capital. Use actual rail availability and arrival stations to allocate the transfer day. A ferry toward Dalian needs a separate sailing, port and document check plus weather flexibility; it is not included in this city itinerary.
Weihai offers another coastal-city stay with its own local transfers and island decision. Keep a dated journey and a new hotel base rather than treating it as a spare Yantai sightseeing block.
Checks and the date-specific parts of the plan
Sources checked on . Museum hours and contacts come from Changyu; the city authority supports the attraction descriptions and Penglai price reference. The warm-season hill and pavilion schedules are labelled by season. The rail closure and planned construction completion come from government announcements; the planned date is not a promise of reopening. Foreign-passport attraction checkout, concession eligibility, actual entry and hired-car returns were not field-tested. Published prices are distinguished from unquoted budget inputs; durations, combinations and base choices are editorial planning judgments.
