Weihai Stay in one useful part of the city, give the shoreline time, and decide whether the island’s history merits a boat day.
Weihai is easiest to enjoy as a coastal stay with a few well-chosen outings. The central waterfront around Xingfu Park gives you an accessible city-and-sea day; the International Bathing Beach offers a different, northwest-facing base for a longer beach walk. Liugong Island adds naval history and an offshore landscape, but it also adds a ferry, ticket conditions and a return deadline.
For a first trip, allow two full days and three nights in one hotel. The mainland route below is a complete visit without any boat. If the history of the 1894–95 Sino-Japanese War is a priority, replace the beach day with Liugong Island after checking its current operation. To enjoy all three at a relaxed pace, add a full day and a fourth night.
Naval history, museum displays and an island landscape · Offshore from the central city; reached through the official tourist terminal
A full-day branch including ferry, museum and return buffer · Current scenic ticket and return ferry; optional island transport and other products may cost extra
Choose two days from three different experiences
Open full-size map ↗. Central Huancui, along the main city bay. Northwest urban coast, separate from the central bay. Offshore from the central city; reached through the official tourist terminal. Separate southern urban food and lodging group. This is an editorial relationship diagram, not a navigation map; box position does not encode distance or an entrance. ChinaMile diagram; location sources. Navigation: search the Chinese name in Amap.
Default, two full days and three nights: central waterfront on one day and the northwest beach on the other. Arrive the evening before, leave the morning after. This keeps both full days usable and avoids changing hotels.
History version: replace the beach day with Liugong Island. The city waterfront still gives you mainland coastal time, so a cancelled sailing does not erase the reason for the trip.
Longer coastal version: add one full day and one night for all three. Maotoushan headlands and the wider Rongcheng coast are further choices, not automatic stops between the city bay and beach. A headland outing needs its own road access and pickup plan; choose it instead of another half day. The area diagram shows these main groupings and the boat-dependent branch, not a continuous walking route.
Decide which evening you want outside your door
Central Huancui / city waterfront: the most balanced base for this first visit, especially if Liugong Island is under consideration. Look around the central bay and ordinary streets just behind it for meals and easier taxi access. Compare the exact hotel entrance with the tourist terminal; “seafront” alone does not tell you which part of the coast it is on.
International Bathing Beach area: choose this when waking up near the beach is the purpose of the stay. It can suit several slow coastal days, but adds a separate journey for central sights and the island terminal. Check seasonal restaurant availability and heating if travelling in cold weather, and confirm whether the room has the advertised sea view.
Weihai station / Hanlefang area: practical for Korean-style dining and trains using 威海站. It is a useful urban base, but does not put the northwest beach outside the door. Save 威海北 separately if that is your station. For every area, confirm passport check-in with the booked property before prepaying.
Fish dumplings and a separate Korean-food evening
鲅鱼水饺 bayu shuijiao, fish dumplings, are a characteristic Weihai meal. Ask how many come in a portion and what is in the filling or stock, particularly if you avoid pork or have allergies. A dumpling meal is an easy alternative to a large seafood order whose final cost is harder to judge.
Hanlefang 韩乐坊 is the Korean-food district to consider for an evening. Choose it when you want that dinner, allowing a separate city transfer rather than describing it as the final few steps of a beach walk. Read menus for a simple rice, noodle, soup or barbecue meal, and check whether side dishes or table charges are included.
For seafood, confirm species, weight or portion, cooking method and the full price before it is prepared. Keep one meal near your sightseeing group instead of crossing the whole city for every recommendation. For an island day, allow for lunch on the island and carry drinking water; an early ferry does not require skipping breakfast.
A mainland budget, with the island added openly
For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full days, use 3R + A + O + ¥960–1,400. R is the nightly room quote, A is the pair’s combined station or airport arrival and departure transfers, and O is the total of optional admissions and activities you choose.
The ¥960–1,400 is an editable allowance: ¥560–800 for meals from arrival dinner through departure breakfast, ¥240–380 for city journeys including the beach return, and ¥160–220 for drinks and contingency. These are editorial planning inputs, not live taxi or restaurant quotes. Rail or flights to Weihai, shopping and premium seafood orders are outside this calculation.
For the outdoor mainland route, R = ¥400, A = ¥240 and O = 0 gives ¥2,400–2,840 for the pair. Choose your actual hotel rate: summer weekends and holidays can make a sample room price a poor prediction.
If replacing the beach day with Liugong Island, the published ¥122 adult reference would add ¥244 for two adults, giving ¥2,644–3,084 with those same assumptions. Replace that number with the current dated ticket total; add any separately priced island vehicle, cableway or other activity. Recalculate local transfers for your hotel. Adding an entire third full day instead also adds one R and another day of food and transport.
City bay, beach or island history
1. Xingfu Park and the central waterfront · 幸福公园 · 幸福门
Begin here to understand Weihai’s relationship with the sea without needing a resort or excursion ticket. Pick a manageable stretch around Xingfu Park, walk beside the bay, then take a break in the city behind the waterfront. The landmark gate is a useful meeting point, not a reason to spend the whole day at one photo angle.
A morning walk and a return near evening can be more enjoyable than marching along the entire coast in midday sun. The shoreline continues well beyond this group; distance on a city map should determine when you use a taxi rather than the fact that every stop is “by the sea.”
Hours
Choose daylight and follow temporary access restrictions, particularly in strong wind or rough weather.
Tickets
The route uses outdoor public space. Confirm any separate interior or elevated-view ticket before buying.
Time
Allow 1–2 hours for one section, with a meal or café break nearby.
Chinese address
威海市环翠区幸福公园;幸福门
Getting there
Set 幸福公园 or 幸福门 as the destination, then choose a legal drop-off point from the current map.
How to visit
Use this as the city day’s anchor. A paid cruise or a gate ascent is optional, not necessary to complete the visit.
2. International Bathing Beach · 国际海水浴场
Choose this area for unhurried time beside the sea rather than for another sequence of landmarks. A beach walk, lunch and a long break make a useful contrast to the city waterfront. Huoju Eighth Street is a nearby photo detour if it interests you; it is not essential to the day.
“Bathing beach” is the place name, not a promise that swimming is permitted on every visit. Use only an open, supervised swimming area and follow the posted flags and weather advice. In cold or rough conditions, make this a walking visit and stay clear of waves.
Hours
Public access and swimming controls depend on conditions. Check the beach notices when you arrive.
Tickets
Use the beach walk as the base activity. Ask the price and return conditions before hiring any equipment.
Time
Keep half a day, including lunch; allow longer if staying locally.
Chinese address
威海市高区国际海水浴场
Getting there
Search the exact beach name. Confirm the hotel’s beach access or the vehicle pickup point before setting out.
How to visit
Pair a short optional 火炬八街 visit with the beach only if convenient. Do not add distant Rongcheng beaches merely because they also appear in Weihai searches.
3. Liugong Island · 刘公岛
Liugong Island is the meaningful choice for naval-history visitors. Prioritise the Sino-Japanese War exhibition and the associated historic landscape, then choose an additional shoreline or heritage walk that fits the return time. It is not a day to promise every museum, battery, cableway and sightseeing vehicle in the advertising list.
The operator’s July 2024 guide listed an adult ticket of ¥122 including scenic admission and the return ferry. Treat that as a published reference, then verify the product for your date. A foreign-passport booking or check-in route has not been demonstrated here, so resolve that with the operator before paying if the system requests a Chinese identity number.
Hours
Check the operator’s current sailing notice and confirm the day’s first departure, final journey to the island and final return to the mainland. Weather and season can change operation.
Tickets
Published July 2024 adult reference: ¥122 with return ferry. Current dated ticket terms take priority; optional services are not assumed included.
Time
Reserve the day and choose a return comfortably before the final sailing; a late last-entry time is not enough for the whole visit.
Chinese address
威海市刘公岛景区旅游码头;刘公岛
Getting there
Use the tourist terminal named on the current booking, not a generic commercial port or an island road destination.
How to visit
Check the current sailing notice, passport instructions and same-day return pier/time with staff. Save the operator phone 0631-5287807. If travel to the island is cancelled before you depart, use the mainland day instead.
Two full days without a rushed coastal circuit
Arrival evening · night 1
Check in and eat near the hotel. If staying around Weihai station, this can be the Hanlefang evening. Otherwise save that district for a deliberate dinner outing, rather than crossing the city after a tiring arrival.
Day 1 · central waterfront · night 2
Walk around Xingfu Park in the morning and choose a comfortable waterside section. Have lunch in the city behind it, take a break and spend the afternoon at a slower pace. Return to the shore if conditions are pleasant or make your Korean-food dinner trip. This is a coastal day with room to sit, not a challenge to trace every bay.
Day 2 · northwest beach · night 3
Travel to the International Bathing Beach, take a long walk and stay for lunch. Add Huoju Eighth Street only if that short photo detour appeals. Rest through the hottest or wettest part of the day, then return to your base with a pickup plan. Swimming is optional and depends on the local controls.
History swap · Liugong Island instead of day 2
Check operation before leaving the hotel, arrive for a morning sailing and verify the return details with terminal staff. Begin with the history exhibition, choose a manageable additional walk, eat lunch and turn back for the return pier well before the final sailing. Keep the evening and that night in Weihai; do not book a tight rail or flight connection after the island visit.
Departure morning
Go to the exact station or airport shown on your ticket, with time for traffic and security. A breakfast and direct transfer are enough; save another headland for a longer stay.
Coastal names cover a much larger area than one walk
Check rail services to Weihai 威海 and Weihai North 威海北 on 12306, then compare the current road journey to your chosen base. They are distinct stations. Choose the service and arrival station together; keep the Chinese name of your departure station on your phone.
If arriving by air, use Weihai Dashuibo Airport 威海大水泊机场 when a suitable flight operates. It requires a separate ground transfer to the urban coast. Obtain the current connection or taxi quote for your flight time from the airport or hotel instead of assuming a late bus or a fixed journey time.
For the mainland route, walk within a coastal group and use current public-transport directions or taxis between groups. Save exact destinations such as 国际海水浴场 and 韩乐坊; a general “Weihai beach” search may take you far from your intended base. Keep the pickup point on an accessible road when a waterfront is pedestrian-only.
For the island, the outward and return boats are part of the plan, not an optional transfer you can improvise later. Road transport takes you to the mainland tourist terminal; it does not take you onto Liugong Island.
Confirm the way back before boarding
Use the operator’s current announcement list to check sailing arrangements before leaving the hotel. Seasonal schedules and weather can change the first departure, last journey to the island and last return. Ask terminal staff for the day’s return pier, final sailing and any earlier boarding requirement before you board.
Pick an earlier return than the final boat and save the details on your phone. If sailings are suspended before departure, use the mainland waterfront or beach day when those areas are safe to access. If arrangements change while you are on the island, follow the operator’s instructions and contact its service number, 0631-5287807; do not seek an improvised private-boat return.
Resolve foreign-passport purchase and boarding before committing to the island: the older guide describes Chinese-ID gates but does not explain a verified passport flow. Ask the operator how your party should book and which original documents to bring. If that remains unresolved, the mainland itinerary still works.
Coastal wind can matter more than air temperature. Carry a layer outside warm weather, sun protection in summer and footwear suitable for wet paths. During a severe-weather warning, replace exposed walks with indoor time; a beach visit should not depend on swimming or approaching storm waves.
Choose another stay for a different coastal experience
Yantai makes a useful comparison for another Shandong coastal city, while Qingdao offers a larger urban base with a different architectural and food scene. Check actual trains and station locations before assigning the next night. Neither needs to be squeezed into the middle of Weihai’s two full days.
Sources and what to recheck
Sources reviewed on . The city’s official visitor map supports the coastal groupings and Hanlefang choice. The Liugong operator supplies the sailing notice, contact number and July 2024 ticket reference. That older price and the dated sailing notice are identified as references, with the actual travel day’s conditions taking priority.
Foreign-passport ticketing, hotel check-in and local journeys were not field-tested. Durations, stay areas and cost allowances are editorial planning judgments. The photograph shows a Weihai coastal headland from October 2023; it illustrates the wider coast rather than identifying one of the route’s beach or island stops.
