Two nights for one full day
Arrive the previous afternoon or evening and sleep near Zhongshan Square. Spend the full morning around the square, have lunch, then transfer to Xinghai for the bay and a short coastal walk. Leave the next morning. Add the museum only if history matters more to you than a long lunch or a longer waterfront stop; keep Fisherman’s Wharf for another visit.
Three nights for two full days — the best balance
Day 1: Zhongshan Square and central streets in the morning, lunch in the centre, then a taxi to Fisherman’s Wharf for the afternoon. Day 2: Dalian Museum in the morning, lunch near Xinghai, and an unhurried bay walk. Keep all three nights in one hotel; there is no benefit in changing base between these two coast areas. Swap the days around the museum’s Monday closure and put the coast on the clearer day.
A third full day is a choice, not an obligation
Use an extra day for a slower seaside stay or a separately planned outing to Lüshun for military and port history, or Jinshitan for a resort coast. Each lies away from the central route and deserves its own transport plan. Do not bolt both onto the two-day city visit. Dalian suits a relaxed coastal break; travellers seeking dense imperial monuments will get more from adding Shenyang.
Places worth your time
1. Zhongshan Square · 中山广场
The circular square is the clearest introduction to Dalian: broad radial streets and former banks and hotels built during the city’s Russian and Japanese periods. Compare their different façades, then use the museum to understand the imperial expansion, wars and colonial rule behind them. The former Yamato Hotel at No 4 is a useful building to identify from outside.
Walk the perimeter using marked crossings, then continue towards Youhao Square for lunch or coffee. This is an architectural streetscape, not a row of museums open for entry. One unhurried circuit is more rewarding than searching for an interior in every bank.

- How to visit
- Walk one circuit of the square; combine with central streets on Day 1, then transfer to the coast.
2. Xinghai Square and the bay · 星海广场
This is the big-horizon part of Dalian: the broad square opens towards the bay, with the sea bridge in view. Head all the way to the water rather than stopping at the inland edge. Give it the clearest half-day of your stay; in poor visibility the museum is a better use of the morning.
For extra walking, follow a signed coastal stretch towards the Binhai Road and Jinshatan side, then turn back while the return still feels comfortable. Plan an out-and-back from Xinghai, not an end-to-end march along the whole coastal road. The sea bridge is a road structure to view from shore; it is not your walking route.

3. Dalian Museum · 大连博物馆
The permanent Modern Dalian exhibition follows the region from coastal defence and port development through Russian leasing, Japanese colonial rule and the city’s later transformation. It gives Zhongshan Square a history beyond the façades. Choose it if you want context, or if wind and rain shorten your waterfront time.
Go in the morning and pair it with Xinghai Square. Individual reservations have been removed; bring your original identity document—your passport when travelling internationally—and go to the staffed entrance for document checking and security. If admission is temporarily capped, keep the waterfront visit and return later.

4. Fisherman’s Wharf · 老虎滩渔人码头
Come for boats, a compact waterfront and the contrast with the immense open space at Xinghai. The colourful buildings around the harbour are part of a modern leisure development; this is not an intact centuries-old fishing village. It works best as an easy afternoon pause, with time to sit by the water.
Choose this after the central architecture walk if you have two full days. On a one-day stay, keep Xinghai and drop this cross-city transfer. The neighbouring Laohutan Ocean Park is a separate paid attraction; the harbour outing does not require buying an aquarium package.

Choose a base before choosing a hotel
Zhongshan Square–Youhao Square: the default
Choose a hotel within an easy luggage walk of Line 2. This is the practical first-visit base for the architecture walk, restaurants and the airport connection. Prioritise the actual station entrance and the hotel’s Chinese address over a listing’s broad “downtown” label.
Xinghai: for a stay built around the sea
Choose the bay if a waterfront hotel and morning walks are the purpose of the trip. You gain a pleasant local half-day but add travel to the old centre. Hotels around the vast square vary in their distance from the water and metro; look at both before paying. Dalian North railway station is useful for an early departure, but is not the base for this city itinerary.
Book the room you can actually use
Confirm the total price, cancellation deadline, bed setup and reception hours in the hotel’s own listing. Send the hotel your arrival time and passport check-in requirement through the booking channel if these are not clear. No named hotel or room purchase has been tested for this guide.
Arrive and move around
From Dalian Zhoushuizi Airport
Follow airport signs to the metro: Line 2 serves the airport and Zhongshan Square. The airport places the metro exit in parking area D, so allow for a walk from the terminal. For a Xinghai base, a taxi with luggage is the simple option; otherwise take Line 2 to Xi’an Road / 西安路, change to Line 1 and continue to Xinghai Square / 星海广场. After metro service ends, use the signed taxi rank rather than waiting for a train that has stopped.

Dalian station and Dalian North are different arrivals
Dalian Railway Station (大连站) is by the central commercial area; a short taxi transfer is convenient for a Zhongshan Square hotel. Dalian North (大连北站) lies farther out and has Lines 1 and 2. For Xinghai Square, Line 1 is direct; for Zhongshan Square or Youhao Square, Line 2 offers a simple direct journey. Depending on your exact hotel, a Line 1 journey with a change to Line 2 at Xi’an Road / 西安路 can also be useful; check the current network map before choosing. Check the station on your actual train ticket before arranging pickup.

Use metro for the city, taxis for awkward coastal links
Buy single tickets at station machines using cash or a supported scan payment. The transport app is optional; if registration or payment fails, use a cash ticket and the staffed service counter. Keep the same ticket until you exit. The coastal road curves around headlands: two points that look close across a bay can be an inconvenient walk. Take a taxi between the centre, Fisherman’s Wharf and the Xinghai area when it saves a long detour.
Eat a northern coastal meal
Order one seafood dish well
Dalian’s menu is built around the sea: a mixed-fish stew or steamed fish makes an easy shared meal, while sea-urchin dumplings are a more distinctive choice. Ask whether seafood is priced per portion, per fish or by weight, and agree on the total before cooking. Add vegetables and a staple rather than ordering several large seafood dishes blindly.
Menzi, fish and corn cakes
Try menzi (焖子), fried starch-jelly pieces with a browned surface; versions range from a simple snack to a seafood-topped plate. Xianyu bingzi (咸鱼饼子) pairs salted fish with corn cakes, a good contrast to a dumpling lunch. Menzi can contain seafood or meat toppings, so the dish name alone is not a vegetarian guarantee. Central neighbourhood restaurants are an easier default than choosing dinner only for a harbour view.

Plan around the coast you want
Warmer months suit longer sea walks; colder and windier weather shifts the balance towards the museum, cafés and shorter waterfront stops. This central itinerary is a city-and-coast break rather than a promise of swimming. If a beach stay is the main goal, choose a beach-area hotel and its actual facilities before adding central sightseeing.
Continue north, or leave by air
Shenyang adds an imperial palace and a different part of Northeast China’s history. Check dated trains from both Dalian stations on 12306 before choosing a departure. Beijing is another onward option by rail or air; compare the full transfer as well as the scheduled journey. A ferry crossing is a separate weather-sensitive transport choice, not the default connection in this guide.
