Hefei makes sense when you want to understand Anhui before travelling farther into the province, or have time around a rail or business stop. Give the Shushan campus of Anhui Museum one morning and the old city another, with Bao Park and a meal of local dishes in between. Stay near Sipailou or Dadongmen so the evening does not require a long ride.
Choose Hefei for museums, everyday city food and an easy urban stop. If your limited time is specifically for mountain scenery or Huizhou villages, travel onward to Huangshan or Hongcun and Xidi; Hefei is not a nearby base for those visits.
A convenient evening food district for trying more than one Anhui flavour. · Baohe · Ningguo South Road
1½–2 hours with dinner · Dining street; order and pay at individual businesses.
One to three days without crossing the city repeatedly
One full day: choose the museum or the old city
For the province's history: visit Anhui Museum Shushan in the morning, have lunch, return to the hotel for a rest, then spend the late afternoon and dinner around Huaihe Road. For a relaxed city day: start at Bao Park, have lunch in the old city, then walk Huaihe Road and Xiaoyaojin. Choose the second plan if the museum is closed or a required reservation is unavailable.
Two full days: museum, memorial landscape and food
Use the old-city plan on the first day. On the second, visit Anhui Museum after opening, have a proper lunch and return to your hotel. Spend the evening at Lei Street if you want a dedicated food outing; stay near the hotel if you prefer less transport. Keep the same room for both nights and put the museum on an open date.
Three full days: add Hechai, or spread out the walking
Add Hechai 1972 as a separate late-morning and afternoon outing, with time for an exhibition and a café. Alternatively, separate Bao Park from Huaihe Road and use the extra day for a slower pace. A third city day is optional, not necessary to make the core visit worthwhile.
These are full sightseeing days. If you arrive at lunch or have an evening train, choose one main visit and a meal, collect your luggage, and leave margin for the exact station on the ticket.
Five useful stops
1. Anhui Museum, Shushan campus · 安徽博物院蜀山馆
Make this the reason to turn a train change into a Hefei stay. Start with Anhui's history, then spend your remaining attention on the craft or art display that interests you most. Bronze objects, carved architectural elements and the materials of traditional scholarship help connect the province's places to things you can actually see.
Choose the Shushan campus for this plan. The older Luyang campus is elsewhere, at 268 Anqing Road, and is not an interchangeable entrance. Temporary exhibitions and individual works rotate; the current gallery plan should decide your route after the main history display.
Hours
The museum's English guide gives 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30. Shushan normally closes Monday. Use current holiday notices for exceptions; Luyang has a different closure pattern.
Tickets
General admission is free. The museum's June 2026 announcement requires advance real-name reservations on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays, up to seven days ahead; ordinary Tuesday–Friday visits do not need reservations. Start at 安徽博物院 for its WeChat or Alipay reservation entry and select 蜀山馆. If your passport cannot be entered, contact the museum on +86 551 6373 6658 before making the journey; the passport form has not been tested.
Time
About 3 hours; a full gallery sweep is not necessary.
Chinese address
合肥市怀宁路87号,安徽博物院蜀山馆(新馆)。
Getting there
For a first visit, take a taxi to the full Shushan-campus address. From the old-city base this is a separate southwest outing; do not treat it as a walk from Huaihe Road.
How to visit
Booked or eligible walk-in date → security and current gallery plan → Anhui history → one chosen craft or art gallery → lunch nearby → hotel or Hechai 1972. If a required reservation is unavailable, swap with the old-city day.
2. Bao Park · 包公园
Begin with Bao Gong Temple to understand the person behind the stories, then continue along the water toward Qingfeng Pavilion or Fuzhuang. The combination of a biographical memorial, garden buildings and water is more useful than rushing to photograph every sign.
Choose one or two interiors and enjoy the connecting landscape. The tomb precinct, temple and garden pavilions have different functions; they are not four copies of the same attraction. If walking is tiring, keep the temple and a short waterside section rather than attempting every corner.
Hours
The operator's regular published window is 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. Use the current 合肥包公园 notice for attraction-specific closure or holiday changes.
Tickets
The operator’s free-entry announcement establishes no admission charge. Follow the current 合肥包公园 scan or registration instructions at the entrance. Bring your original passport to the staffed Bao Gong Temple entrance and ask staff which method applies. The 2024 notice described a paper registration slip for visitors using other valid identity documents; it is a historical fallback, not proof that timed registration remains compulsory. A later local guide reports a scan-entry option and lists +86 551 6288 6107 for enquiries. Confirm with the park if entry certainty affects your plan; no passport transaction was tested.
Time
2–3 hours with one or two interiors.
Chinese address
合肥市包河区芜湖路72号,包公祠;清风阁方向:芜湖路58号。
Getting there
Metro Line 1 to Baogongyuan / 包公园, then follow park signs; a taxi to 包公祠,芜湖路72号 starts at the temple end.
How to visit
Bao Gong Temple entry check and visit → waterside path → choose Fuzhuang or Qingfeng Pavilion → exit toward Wuhu Road for lunch or transport. Do not arrive at last entry expecting time for the full park.
3. Huaihe Road and Xiaoyaojin · 淮河路步行街·逍遥津公园
Use Huaihe Road for the texture of present-day Hefei: shopping, snack counters and side lanes around an older commercial core. Turn off the broad pedestrian street into a smaller lane such as Cuozaoshan Lane, then continue toward Xiaoyaojin for a shaded change of pace.
Xiaoyaojin's Three Kingdoms associations explain the statues and names, but today's visit is a city-park outing, not an intact ancient battlefield. Families can give the park more time; readers interested in late-Qing history can instead investigate the Li Hongzhang Former Residence on Huaihe Road. Its entrance is distinct from the street, and its current visitor notice determines indoor access.
Hours
Walk the park in daylight and use the shopping streets for the later meal. Shops and museum interiors keep individual hours; seasonal evening events are optional.
Tickets
This plan uses the public street and park paths. Pay separately only for a ride, exhibition or service you choose. For Li Hongzhang's residence, check its own visitor notice or ask +86 551 6262 6949 about that day's entry.
Time
2–3 hours plus food; add time only if choosing a museum interior.
Chinese address
合肥市庐阳区淮河路步行街、撮造山巷、逍遥津公园;李鸿章故居:淮河路208号。
Getting there
Use a taxi to 淮河路步行街 at a vehicle-accessible edge, or the central metro stations Sipailou / 四牌楼 and Dadongmen / 大东门 according to your hotel. Save the return pickup outside the pedestrian street.
How to visit
Huaihe Road → a side lane and lunch → Xiaoyaojin park loop → return to the old-city streets or hotel. Reverse the order on a hot day to put the park walk earlier.
4. Hechai 1972 · 合柴1972
Choose Hechai if you enjoy adaptive reuse more than another historic-house visit. Look at the scale of the retained buildings and how new shops, cultural spaces and courtyards fit inside them. The contrast with the old-city lanes is the attraction.
The operator describes a former prison site redeveloped around industrial heritage and creative uses. Visit with that history in mind rather than treating every brick wall as a neutral photo backdrop. One interesting open gallery and a café stop are enough; do not assume every advertised hall or event is operating on your date.
Hours
A daytime or late-afternoon visit gives the best view of the buildings. Check the actual event or gallery's opening notice if it is your main reason to go.
Tickets
The suggested visit is a walk through the open public areas and a café stop. Galleries, performances and special events may charge separately; check the displayed terms at the chosen venue.
Time
1½–2½ hours including a drink or one exhibition.
Chinese address
合肥市包河区金寨路与天堂寨路交口,合柴1972。
Getting there
Taxi to 合柴1972 at the Jinzhai Road / Tiantangzhai Road junction. It belongs with a southwest-city day rather than the old-city walking loop.
How to visit
Main visitor entrance → retained-building circuit → one open exhibition or shop → café → return to the same roadside pickup.
5. Lei Street · 罍街
Come hungry enough for a meal, not just a photograph of the signs. Walk through once before buying, select a sit-down main dish and then add one snack. The district mixes local and other Chinese food; an elaborate heritage-style façade does not by itself make a dish a Hefei speciality.
This works best as the evening destination after the museum or as a relaxed final night. If you have already eaten well around Huaihe Road, there is no need to cross town solely to tick off another food street.
Hours
Early evening through dinner; the street's restaurants and bars keep different hours.
Tickets
No bundled dining ticket is needed. Read the menu and check the portion or weight before ordering.
Time
1½–2 hours with dinner.
Chinese address
合肥市包河区宁国南路与水阳江路交口,罍街。
Getting there
Taxi to 罍街 at the Ningguo South Road / Shuiyangjiang Road junction; choose a legal roadside pickup for the return.
How to visit
One look through the street → choose a meal → add one snack if wanted → taxi back to the same hotel. Keep it separate from any tight same-evening train connection.
Choose the base for your actual stay
Sipailou / 四牌楼 or Dadongmen / 大东门 is the default. Stay on a road near the old-city pedestrian area for food, evening walks and manageable luggage access. Pick Sipailou for the middle of the old-city area, or Dadongmen when convenient rail connections matter more. Check the hotel entrance on its map, not just a district label.
Choose the Swan Lake / 天鹅湖 area for a work visit or a hotel-led stay focused on the southwest city and museum. It has a more spacious modern setting but means another journey for the old streets. Choose Hefei South / 合肥南站 only when a late arrival or early onward train makes proximity the priority.
Search your booking service with Hefei + Sipailou or Hefei + Dadongmen, enter the actual dates and people, then check bed type and the walking route from the entrance. The recommendations here compare areas; no room rate or individual property has been verified.
Arrive by the right station or airport route
Hefei South and Hefei railway stations
Hefei South / 合肥南站 and Hefei / 合肥站 are different stations. Keep the exact name on the ticket. For an old-city hotel, Metro Line 1 to Dadongmen is a practical starting point; with luggage, a licensed station taxi to the full hotel address is simpler. Buy the onward journey through China Railway 12306 and plan the return to that specific station.
Hefei Xinqiao Airport / 合肥新桥国际机场
For a central hotel, use the airport's licensed taxi rank or an airport bus followed by a short local connection. The operator's current Line 1 inbound route includes Daximen / 大西门 and Sanxiaokou / 三孝口, useful for the central city. At the airport bus counter, show the hotel address and ask which current stop fits; the outward and return stops are not identical.
For a rail connection into the city: the airport-bus operator lists an airport–Nangang / 南岗 route, connecting with Metro Line 2. The inbound bus is listed at CNY 25; transfer to Line 2 toward the centre and use Sipailou or Dadongmen for the old city. This adds a change and is less convenient with large bags. The previously advertised airport Line 4 via Swan Lake hotels has been withdrawn; do not wait at one of those old hotel stops.
Get around by area
Walk inside the old-city cluster and use metro or taxi for the southwest museum, Hechai and Lei Street. A museum morning and a food-street evening work; fitting every district into one afternoon does not. Save these Chinese names and your hotel's address before leaving Wi-Fi.
Order a Hefei meal
For breakfast or a snack: look for 鸭油烧饼, a pastry made with duck fat, or 鸭油汤包, juicy filled buns. Neither is vegetarian just because the outside looks like bread. With tea or soup, one portion is a useful start before a morning walk.
For a sit-down lunch: share 庐州烤鸭 / Luzhou roast duck or 吴山贡鹅 / Wushan goose, a vegetable dish and rice. Ask how much bird is included and whether the price is a portion or weight. 李鸿章大杂烩 is a mixed-ingredient dish: ask what is in the kitchen's version rather than assuming one fixed recipe.
For a food evening: Lei Street lets you browse before committing. Choose an Anhui dish from the province's named local-food list, then add a small sweet such as 桂花赤豆糊, an osmanthus-scented red-bean dessert. The old-city area around Huaihe Road is the simpler choice when you want to eat close to the hotel.
Useful request: 请问这份有多大?价格是一份还是按重量?我不吃___。 — How large is this portion? Is the price per serving or by weight? I do not eat ___.
Continue to a different Anhui landscape
Mount Huangshan and Hongcun/Xidi require their own southern-Anhui base and station choice. Use the Anhui comparison before deciding between a mountain stay and a village stay. For another major city, Nanjing offers a different imperial-history and riverside visit. Make the next transfer its own travel block rather than calling a long return journey a Hefei day trip.
Sources and checks
Sources reviewed on . The airport routes were checked against the operator's current pages. Anhui Museum's new weekend reservation rule was read in a reproduction of the museum's signed June 2026 announcement; the original Chinese website could not be retrieved during this check. Its older blanket no-reservation notices are not used as the present rule. Bao Park's free-entry announcement is carried by China.com.cn. Its 2024 registration method conflicts with a later local guide describing scan entry; the page therefore uses the current entrance instructions and labels the older paper-slip process as historical. The listed cultural spaces and addresses come from their operators or local authorities. Visiting time, bases and combinations are editorial choices; no booking or visit was field-tested.
