ANHUI · WATER, WHITE WALLS & MERCHANT HOUSES

Hongcun & Xidi Two village experiences, one comfortable base

Choose Hongcun for pools reflecting white walls and a village shaped by water. Choose Xidi for carved doorways, clan halls and the close detail of Huizhou houses. One unhurried village is worthwhile; two nights let you see both from the same hotel, with a separate road journey between them.

Choose the village experience you actually want

Choice and timePlan and conditions
Hongcun / 宏村 — the landscape choice:

start at South Lake, follow the water lanes to Moon Pond and visit an open merchant house. Allow 3–4 hours, longer if you stop to sketch, photograph or eat. Dusk adds another view only if entry and your return transport work.

Xidi / 西递 — the architectural choice:

start with the stone archway, then look closely at a clan hall, courtyards and carved doors. Allow 2½–3½ hours. It is especially rewarding if you want to understand how merchants, education and family life shaped the houses.

Both — a comparison, not a duplicate:

give each a substantial daylight block. Compare Hongcun's water-led plan with Xidi's lanes and halls. The second village needs another ticket and a road transfer; it does not automatically require another hotel.

UNESCO lists the two villages together for their preserved settlement patterns, architecture and water systems. They remain distinct places. The useful experience is seeing how buildings and village life fit together, not collecting a long list of houses with similar names.

Separate the villages, Huangshan city and the mountain

Hongcun and Xidi are in Yi County / 黟县, within Huangshan municipality. Huangshan city centre is usually the Tunxi / 屯溪 area, with its airport and old street. Huangshan Scenic Area / 黄山风景区 means the mountain; reaching its roadside interchange is not reaching the summit. A hotel with “Huangshan” in its name can be far from both the city centre and the mountain gate.

The Xidi operator describes Hongcun as a separate nearby village more than ten kilometres away. Its transport guide gives a roughly 30-minute bus journey between Hongcun passenger station and Xidi. Those figures explain why one local base can work, but they do not include your hotel-to-stop leg, waiting, queues or village walks.

Choice and timePlan and conditions
黟县东站 / Yixian East:

a useful rail gateway for the villages when your train actually stops there. The Xidi operator gives about 15 minutes by local bus from this station to Xidi, excluding a wait. A Hongcun-side hotel is a further road journey; do not apply Xidi's short transfer to that hotel.

黄山北站 / Huangshan North:

a different station with a longer village transfer. The same operator gives about one hour by tourist bus to Xidi. Our named Hongcun-side hotel publishes an approximately 87-minute transfer from Huangshan North; use a larger planning allowance, below.

黄山市区 / Tunxi and TXN airport:

city/airport gateways, not the villages. The named hotel lists roughly 78 km and an 85-minute taxi reference from Huangshan Tunxi International Airport. Confirm your actual route and fare before travel.

汤口 / Tangkou and 黄山风景区:

a separate mountain access plan. The Xidi operator gives a 1–1½-hour bus reference between Tangkou interchange and Xidi. Mountain tickets, internal transport, cableways, walking and the descent still need their own time and arrangements.

These are operator reference journeys, not live estimates or promised departures. Confirm the exact station name on each ticket. Do not substitute Huangshan West / 黄山西站, Huangshan North or Yixian East for one another.

One night for one village; two nights make the pair comfortable

Choice and timePlan and conditions
Day visit from Tunxi or a railway gateway:

choose one village and confirm the whole return journey before leaving. Protect 3–4 hours in the village plus lunch and both transfers. A late-arriving train is a poor reason to rush two villages before an evening departure.

One night:

arrive, leave bags at the hotel, give Hongcun a substantial afternoon, then return for dinner and the same bed. Add Xidi the following morning only if its opening, return car, bag collection and onward departure all fit. Otherwise keep the second morning slow.

Two nights — recommended for both:

visit Hongcun after arrival if daylight permits; use a separate full morning for Xidi, return to the same hotel and leave the afternoon flexible. Depart after breakfast or a short local outing with bags collected first. A repeat Hongcun visit depends on the re-entry terms of your actual ticket.

Add Huangshan mountain:

add a separate mountain visit with suitable accommodation and weather flexibility. Use the Huangshan guide for the mountain decision. Do not promise a summit, Hongcun and Xidi in the same day merely because all three appear under “Huangshan”.

Hongcun 宏村:follow the water into the village

Begin with South Lake / 南湖, where the roofline and hills are seen together. Move off the busiest photographic crossing before stopping to look back at the village. Follow the signed lanes and the water channels towards Moon Pond / 月沼; the change from the broad southern water to the enclosed central pond is the heart of this visit.

Continue to an open historic interior such as Chengzhi Hall / 承志堂. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism's village description highlights its detailed carving and the channels connecting South Lake and Moon Pond. Looking at one house carefully gives the water-and-roofline view a human scale: notice the courtyard, carved timber and relationship between public hall and private rooms.

Leave room for a lane away from the main photo stops and a tea or meal break. These are inhabited streets, so ask before photographing people, keep doorways clear and enter only spaces explicitly open to visitors. A scenic-area ticket does not turn every dwelling into a museum. For a quieter experience, a morning or later daylight window is an editorial preference, not a guarantee of an empty pond.

Opening hours
Current staffed admission hours and individual house hours were not verified from a live operator notice. Ask the official ticket channel or your hotel to confirm both before setting out. Plan historic interiors in daylight; evening street access does not prove that the houses remain open.
Tickets & booking
The operator group's posted tariff lists standard adult Hongcun admission at ¥104. It is a separate ticket from Xidi. Current discounts, first-entry deadline and repeat-entry conditions must be checked on the actual product; see passport and booking recovery.
Time to allow
3–4 hours for the village, plus food and transfers; an editorial allowance.
Chinese address
安徽省黄山市黟县宏村镇,宏村景区游客中心(请确认当日使用的检票入口)。
Getting there
From the named hotel, have reception arrange a car to the confirmed visitor entrance and a return pickup. Allow 20–30 minutes for dispatch, the short road leg and the approach as a planning buffer; confirm the actual estimate. Do not ask a driver to take a car through the old lanes to Moon Pond.
How to visit
Hotel → confirmed entrance and passport/ticket check → South Lake → water lanes → Moon Pond → an open historic hall and a break → agreed public-road pickup → dinner and the same hotel.

Xidi 西递:read the village through its halls and doorways

Start with Hu Wenguang's memorial archway / 胡文光刺史牌坊 to see how achievement was displayed at the village entrance. Inside, give Jing'ai Hall / 敬爱堂 more attention than a passing photograph. The operator's hall description explains its role in clan meetings, celebrations and family discipline; the space helps make sense of the village's social structure.

Choose one or two open houses or gardens, such as West Garden / 西园 or Taoli Garden / 桃李园, then follow a short loop through the lanes. Compare a carved door surround, an internal courtyard and the roofline above the street. You will see more by slowing down at three details than by hurrying through every named residence. Request an English guide and agree the price and scope before starting if you want the inscriptions explained.

The village-and-field viewpoint is optional, especially in heat or wet weather. Ask the visitor desk which approach is open and how to return; do not follow a steep or muddy shortcut for a rooftop photograph. Keep the core route in the lanes if steps are difficult, while recognising that thresholds and paving still prevent a blanket step-free promise.

Opening hours
The operator lists the village as open all day. This does not establish round-the-clock staffed admission, open historic interiors or a night show. Confirm those separately and use a daylight block for the halls.
Tickets & booking
Standard adult ¥104 in the posted tariff, also stated in the operator's visitor guide. Ask +86 559 515 4030 about current passport handling, product validity and any separately ticketed experience before payment.
Time to allow
2½–3½ hours for the village, plus lunch and transfers; an editorial allowance.
Chinese address
安徽省黄山市黟县西递村,西递景区游客中心。
Getting there
Arrange a return car from the same Hongcun-side hotel to 西递景区游客中心 or the permitted parking approach. Protect 45–60 minutes each way as a hotel-to-entrance planning budget. The operator's roughly 30-minute bus reference begins at Hongcun passenger station, not your room.
How to visit
Hotel → Xidi visitor centre and admission → archway → open Jing'ai Hall and chosen houses → lane loop and lunch → confirmed roadside pickup → same hotel. Do not leave the return arrangement until a final bus has gone.

Buy the right village ticket and establish re-entry before paying

At the posted adult tariff, two separate village admissions total ¥208 per adult, before transport, a guide, meals and any optional activity. That is a planning baseline, not a claim that every live product costs the same. A hotel booking, “Huangshan” ticket or cheap audio-guide listing does not automatically include either village.

Start with the Hongcun listing on Huangshan Tourism Official Platform / 黄山旅游官方平台 and the Xidi operator's current notices. The platform's web page loaded only its application shell during checking; a successful booking and foreign-passport flow were not verified. If it does not display a usable product, ask the hotel or scenic visitor service to identify the current official purchase route and staffed desk. The former Hongcun web domain is no longer a dependable booking source.

With a foreign passport: use your real document type and name. If only a Chinese ID field or local mobile verification appears, stop rather than inventing details. Ask whether staff can issue or validate admission with the original passport, which entrance handles it and during what hours. Carry the passport and booking receipt. If no entry method is confirmed, postpone that village or choose the other only after its own admission is confirmed.

For an overnight stay or a second visit: ask whether your exact ticket permits leaving and returning, for how long, and whether registration or a specific entrance is required. Do not assume a three-day entitlement from an old guide. Staying outside the paid village makes this particularly important if you want to return for morning light.

Show the ticket desk: 我们持外国护照。请确认在哪里人工核验证件。这张票今天出村后还能再进吗?明天还能用吗?需要先登记吗? — We have foreign passports. Where can staff check them? Can this ticket be used after leaving today, or tomorrow, and must we register first?

A named base with a real king-or-twin choice

Banyan Tree Huangshan / 黄山悦榕庄 is an upscale option on the Hongcun side of the village area, by Lucun. Its official Chinese address is 安徽省黄山市黟县宏村镇悦榕路1号. Use that full address: this is not a hotel in Tunxi city centre or on the Huangshan summit.

The hotel's own room list gives Lucun Suite – King / 卢苑套房大床 and Lucun Suite – Twin / 卢苑套房双床; both list capacity for two. The twin room page explicitly identifies twin beds. Confirm the exact room, adults/children, any extra-bed terms, meals and cancellation conditions on your actual rate; do not rely on “suite” to imply extra occupancy.

This base suits travellers who want one room, hotel support and arranged road transfers to both villages. It trades an inside-village doorway for a more comfortable resort setting and another short ride. It is not a budget recommendation or a stay review. For a village inn instead, obtain its Chinese address, exact beds, foreign-passport check-in confirmation, luggage meeting point and admission/re-entry arrangements before booking; cars may stop outside the lanes.

Confirm bag storage before check-in and after checkout. Use your reservation channel's messaging where available; the hotel also publishes +86 559 226 5000. Ask it to quote the complete pickup and return journeys, not merely “transport available”. No hotel stay, baggage service or passport transaction was tested.

Railway or airport → hotel → leave bags → visit

By high-speed rail: compare trains to 黟县东站 / Yixian East and 黄山北站 / Huangshan North for your actual date. A more convenient arrival time may matter more than the shorter final road leg. Send the hotel the train number, exact station and arrival time, and agree the public meeting point, price, luggage capacity and what happens if the train is late.

From Yixian East, go to the hotel first with your luggage unless the hotel has expressly arranged another secure handover. Allow 60–75 minutes as an editorial station-to-hotel planning block including meeting and loading; obtain the driver's route estimate. From Huangshan North, protect 90–120 minutes. These budgets include contingencies, not published bus running times. The hotel's location page provides its longer North-station reference.

Public-transport option: the Xidi operator identifies buses from Huangshan North's tourism transport centre and from Yixian East. Check that day's destination, departure, stop, fare and final return before paying. A bus reaching a village does not complete the trip to the Banyan Tree; arrange that last leg with the hotel. If the bus or onward leg is unclear, use a quoted licensed taxi or prebooked transfer instead.

By air: arrive at 黄山屯溪国际机场 / Huangshan Tunxi International Airport (TXN), then use a licensed taxi or an advance hotel transfer to the exact hotel address. Protect 90–120 minutes for the airport-to-hotel transfer after baggage collection, and increase it if traffic or weather requires. The hotel itself recommends a taxi or prebooked transport; no free shuttle is assumed.

At the hotel, check in or obtain bag-storage permission, save the receipt and agree when you will return. Confirm admission before taking the next car to Hongcun or Xidi. If a late arrival leaves too little daylight for the houses, settle in and eat; begin the village visit in the next usable opening window.

Visit both villages from the same hotel

For a relaxed pair, make separate outings: hotel → Hongcun → same hotel, then hotel → Xidi → same hotel. Keep the large bags in the room or with reception by agreement. You do not need to repack just to see the second village.

A combined outing can also work for energetic visitors with a confirmed car: hotel → Hongcun for about three hours → 45–60 minutes protected for the inter-village transfer and entry approach → lunch and about three hours at Xidi → hotel. Treat this as a full outing of roughly 8–10 hours once meals, queues and all transfers are included. Short winter daylight or a late start is a reason to split it, not to skip the return margin.

Before leaving, agree the permitted drop-off, final pickup location and time, total price, waiting charge and driver contact. Photograph each pickup location. If using buses, establish the actual return and the final hotel leg first; no last-bus time has been verified here. A missing return connection means choosing one village or booking a car, not relying on a new room becoming available.

Make time for a Huizhou meal

The official Yi County food list includes 臭鳜鱼 / chou guiyu, 毛豆腐 / mao doufu and 腊八豆腐 / laba tofu. Ask what the kitchen serves and how it is prepared: these are regional specialities, not a promise that every restaurant has them. A cooked local dish, vegetables and rice make a better pause between village walks than trying to replace lunch with samples.

Choose a restaurant with a priced menu; for fish, establish whether the price is per dish or by weight and confirm the total. Ask about pork, lard, fish or other ingredients relevant to your diet rather than assuming a tofu dish is vegetarian. Back at the named hotel, its dining directory provides a practical dinner fallback; check current restaurant hours and book when needed.

Useful request: 请给我有价格的菜单。这条鱼一共多少钱?我们不吃___,请确认汤底和配料。 — Please show a priced menu. What is the total for this fish? We do not eat ___; please check the stock and ingredients too.

Collect bags before the onward journey

Return to 黄山悦榕庄,悦榕路1号 → collect and check bags → meet the confirmed car → reach the station printed on your ticket. Save the Chinese station name offline. Do not finish in Xidi and calculate a short station transfer while your bags are still at the Hongcun-side hotel.

For Yixian East: start bag collection at least 2 hours 35 minutes before the train as an editorial starting budget: 20 minutes for bags, up to 75 minutes for meeting/loading/road transfer and 60 minutes at the station for the entrance, security and passport/manual checks if needed. Add the entire journey back from your final sight before this block.

For Huangshan North: protect 3 hours 20 minutes from hotel bag collection to train departure: 20 minutes for bags, up to 120 minutes for the road transfer and 60 minutes at the station. These are planning allowances, not railway minimums or guarantees. Ask the driver whether conditions need more, and follow the actual boarding cutoff on your service.

For TXN airport: use 20 minutes for bag collection and 90–120 minutes for the road transfer, then add the airline's required airport-arrival lead time and a separate traffic margin. Confirm terminal, check-in and bag-drop deadlines directly. Keep mountain excursions and a second distant village out of a tight departure morning.

Weather, crowds and plans that can recover

Wet paving or storms: village lanes, thresholds and water edges can become slippery. Shorten the walk in ordinary rain; do not treat a severe-weather or flood warning as an invitation to tour another village in the same conditions. Follow closures, return to the hotel while transport is available and retain a flexible indoor rest or meal.

A paid area or hall is closed: check which alternative spaces are actually open and whether the ticket still makes sense. Hongcun's water views and Xidi's lanes remain the reasons to choose them, but admission does not guarantee every interior. If the whole visit cannot proceed, ask the seller about changing or refunding the unused product rather than paying for an unofficial entrance.

No working ride app: use the hotel to arrange the outward and return car. Keep the driver's contact and the hotel address offline. If no return is confirmed, reduce the trip to a supported local outing; a published bus journey time is not proof that a bus is still running when you finish.

Mobility and luggage: ask the attraction about the exact accessible route, thresholds and toilets before booking. Historic houses and village paths have not been verified as fully step-free. Keep wheeled luggage at the agreed hotel base and carry only what you need for the walk.

Sources and limits

Checked 5 October 2026. UNESCO and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism support the two villages' cultural distinction. The Xidi operator's posted group tariff lists ¥104 for each village; its own visitor and transport pages support Xidi's area-opening description and the quoted bus reference journeys. The operator contact page supports Xidi's Chinese address and enquiry number. Banyan Tree supplies the named hotel's address, room beds and capacity, location references and contact.

The old Hongcun domain now displays a domain-sale page and is not linked as a purchase route. The current platform application shell does not establish successful checkout. Hongcun's staffed gate hours, both villages' current passport and re-entry procedures, individual house hours and live bus departures remain to be confirmed. No hotel stay, phone call, payment, luggage service, driving time or accessible route was tested. Combinations, road buffers and station-arrival margins are editorial recommendations; they do not promise that a late arrival or the mountain summit will fit.

For the wider choice, compare the Anhui guide and the separate Huangshan mountain guide. Add a place because its experience interests you, with a workable overnight and return plan.
