Nanjing: wooded tombs, city walls and Qinhuai evenings
Nanjing combines imperial tombs, Republican history, Jiangsu collections and Qinhuai lanes. Allow three complete sightseeing days and stay near Xinjiekou; timed reservations, hill approaches and extensive walking shape the visit.

timed reservations, hill approaches and extensive walking
These nine are city choices with independent value. Numbers set priorities for a mixed first visit; choose clusters and held entry slots rather than completing them in numerical order. Qixia Mountain below is a separate outing.
Four nights usually protect three full days when arrival and departure consume the edges of the stay. Three full days allow an eastern hill block, a museum / modern-history block and a north-lake / south-lanes block. Add #9 when its subject matters to you, replacing another block or extending the stay. Two full days still make Nanjing worthwhile: choose the hill pair and the museum / Palace pair, with one southern evening. One usable day calls for one of those pairs and an evening nearby.
Choice and time
Plan and conditions
#2 → #1: the eastern hill
Allow 6–8 h with approach, lunch and return. Xiaoling's animals and ceremonial buildings precede the separately timed Mausoleum climb. Obtain #1's reservation first, then place #2 around it. A morning #1 slot reverses the order. For lower energy, keep #2 and remove #1's long stairway; buying a bigger park bundle adds walking rather than saving it.
#3 → #4: collections and government history
Allow 6–8 h with lunch and transfers. Use a morning Museum reservation, then Line 2 west from 明故宫 to 大行宫 for the Palace. A morning Palace ticket reverses the chain. Monday closures often remove both; pair free street / lake choices instead when neither has a holiday opening.
#7 → #8: below and above the wall
Allow 3–4 h. Follow the short lake route to 解放门, then buy the north-wall entry for Taicheng views. Finishing at 解放门 makes 鸡鸣寺 metro the return; continuing to 玄武门 adds wall walking. Wet stairs or low energy remove #8 while retaining the level lakeshore.
#6 → #5: southern lanes and river
Allow 3–4 h plus dinner. Explore Laomendong by daylight, walk north and finish at the Qinhuai frontage. During peak core reservations, hold the official entry before moving there. A short arrival evening can stay entirely in one district, with the metro route back already saved.
One fewer day:
drop the north-lake / wall block (#7/#8) from the default three-day plan; keep the eastern hill, Museum / Palace block and one south-city evening. #9 is already optional, so omitting it alone does not free a day in that default. If remembrance is your main reason for visiting, retain #9 and remove the Palace or the hill stairway instead. Treat a late arrival as meal-and-street time, rather than counting it as a complete sightseeing day.
Use four city blocks
Central bed: 新街口 / Xinjiekou. Use it as the outward-and-return hub for each block below. A 夫子庙 / Fuzimiao bed brings the southern evening closer but adds the return journey from the eastern hill and northern lake.
#9 lies west on Line 2 and deserves its own quiet visit. These notes explain combinations; use the maps for geographic context.
Book ahead for Nanjing
Hold the actual arrival and exit.12306's English site supplies dated rail tickets. 南京南 / Nanjing South and 南京站 / Nanjing are different stations. Use the passport name/document on the issued ticket and bring the original for the staffed identity channel when needed.
Reserve the free Museum before shaping the city blocks. At 18:00 the official 南京博物院 WeChat mini-program opens tickets for the new date seven days ahead in one batch. Nearer dates depend on the remaining or returned inventory displayed in that interface. If the official system issues a passport-matched reservation, take the original passport and success record to the main entrance's east-side green service window. If the passport field fails, ask the museum before fixing this stop. An empty slot list calls for #7/#8 or #6/#5, rather than an assumed walk-in.
Reserve #1 separately from paid Zhongshan admission. The official ticket entry displays the mini-program / ticket-centre channel. #1 is free but timed; #2 is CNY 70 and also sells at its gates. The bilingual guide accepts passports. If your own form cannot be completed, the park ticket service is +86 25 84437786; a successful Xiaoling purchase alone leaves #1 unsecured.
Fit #4 or #9 to the available entry. The Palace's authorised WeChat ticket costs CNY 35; its general foreign-passport form remains a specific uncertainty, resolved through +86 25 84578888 if needed. The Memorial's current guide explicitly includes passport reservations:08:00 release,1–7 days ahead, the full-name official WeChat account, and separate selection of 南京大屠杀史实展. Its FAQ excludes visit-day reservations.
For a peak Qinhuai evening, obtain core entry too. The adopted 2026 policy explanation uses the official 南京夫子庙 Alipay mini-program during controlled periods. This free public-area arrangement is separate from paid halls and boats. The available official pages give no demonstrated foreign-passport form result; staffed assistance at the entrance and Laomendong are the usable alternatives.
Where to stay in Nanjing
Default: Xinjiekou / 新街口. Lines 1 and 2 simplify both rail arrivals, the Museum, Palace and west-side Memorial, while nearby food streets make a solo dinner easy. The tradeoff is a busy shopping district and a separate hill approach. Novotel Nanjing Central Suning · 南京新街口苏宁诺富特酒店, 南京市秦淮区淮海路68号, is the concrete starting point used in the transport chains below. Accor lists a Standard Room with Double Bed (24 m²) and a Standard Room with Two Simple Beds (30 m²); its site offers dated rates and cancellation terms. It describes about a ten-minute walk to Line 1/2 Xinjiekou.
Alternative: Qinhuai / 三山街—夫子庙. Choose this for a shorter walk home after the river evening, accepting a longer north/east trip. Holiday Inn Nanjing Aqua City · 南京水游城假日酒店, 南京市秦淮区建康路1号, sits beside its mall and the south-city walking area. IHG's rooms page offers Standard rooms with a King or two Double beds, and a One-Bedroom Suite with King. Connecting rooms are a request, rather than a guaranteed family allocation.
Use the operator's dated checkout for occupancy, bedding, breakfast and cancellation before paying. Save the precise Chinese property name/address and request its route from your actual metro exit. A room near 南京南 can suit an early train, but its outer-city location gives up the default's convenient evenings. No stay or foreign-passport hotel check-in has been tested for this guide.
Getting to Nanjing, and leaving again
These chains end at the default 淮海路68号 hotel. Door-to-door allowances are editorial planning ranges, including ordinary station walking and waiting; they are not timetable claims. For planning, reach the booked rail departure station 45–60 minutes before the train, in addition to the hotel journey. Airport check-in deadlines come from your airline; protect its required terminal arrival time before selecting the hotel departure. These are buffers, rather than operator guarantees.
Route details, choices and return steps
Nanjing South · 南京南站
After the rail exit, follow Metro Line 1 toward 八卦洲大桥南 and get off at 新街口; walk by the saved property route to 淮海路68号. Allow 45–70 min from station concourse to hotel. Return from the same hotel to 新街口, take Line 1 toward 中国药科大学 to 南京南, then follow railway departures for your booked train. Leave enough time for the large station, security and passport identity handling.
Nanjing Station · 南京站
Follow Metro Line 1 toward 中国药科大学 to 新街口, then the same hotel walk. Allow 30–50 min. Reverse from the hotel on Line 1 toward 八卦洲大桥南 to 南京站. The lake-side station name on your ticket determines this chain; substituting 南京南 changes the journey.
Lukou Airport · 南京禄口国际机场, NKG
Follow terminal signs to the airport rail station. Board the S 1/6 city-bound through service, leave at 南京南 for Line 1 toward 八卦洲大桥南, then 新街口 and 淮海路68号. Allow 90–120 min after reaching the terminal transport area, with immigration and baggage extra. Since 29 September 2026, S 1 and Line 6 run through 南京南; changing there is a route choice for this hotel, rather than the airport train's terminal.
Your original hotel → NKG
Reverse to 新街口 → Line 1 south to 南京南 → signed Line 6/S 1 airport-bound service → 禄口机场 → your booked terminal. Read the airport destination on the train, because through routes can differ. An eastern 大行宫 stay can instead use Line 2 east to 明故宫, then the 6/S 1 airport service; the official station plan establishes the Line 2/6 interchange. For an arrival or departure beyond the usable rail window, use the airport's staffed taxi rank or a hotel-arranged licensed car to the same saved address.
Qinhuai hotel adjustment: for Aqua City, Line 1 三山街 is the hotel-side station for both rail arrivals and the 南京南 airport transfer; walk to 建康路1号 using IHG's branch location. The 2026 metro price manual starts at CNY 2 and charges by distance; buy the actual station pair at the machine or staffed counter. A taxi's meter/quoted car fare and motorway costs determine the road price; this page gives no invented fixed airport fare.
Getting around Nanjing
Use metro between blocks and walk within a block. Line 2 connects 新街口, 大行宫, 明故宫, 苜蓿园 / 下马坊 and 云锦路. Line 1 serves both rail stations, 新街口, 三山街 and 玄武门; Line 3 serves 鸡鸣寺, 夫子庙 and 武定门. Save your hotel address in Chinese and the reverse station chain before leaving it.
The eastern hill has a final leg. The current Zhongshan traffic scheme, effective 1 October 2025–30 September 2028, uses metro approaches and scenic connections during controls. 苜蓿园's shuttle can stop serving the Mausoleum direction directly, requiring a walk to 十朝文化园 / 美龄宫. For a low-energy visit, select one hill object, rather than relying on an unrestricted taxi between gates.
New Line 6 changes airport routing. It opened 29 September 2026 and through-operates with S 1, without a mandatory change at 南京南. Its operating notice also changes former express patterns to stopping through trains and adjusts late departures. Old airport-express journey times and old S 1 last-train tables are unsuitable for a fixed flight connection. The station's current direction board and metro service line +86 25 51899999 resolve a late departure.
Before a Qinhuai or Laomendong evening, check the city's current service and traffic notices and the operating Metro route for your date. Temporary crowd controls can restrict vehicle access to the Confucius Temple core without closing every surrounding street. If your car cannot enter, set pickup outside the controlled area and finish by an operating Metro stop or a confirmed walking route.
Sights in detail
Zhongshan / east
1. Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum · 中山陵
The formal approach, blue-roofed buildings and long stair axis make this Nanjing's clearest Republican-era memorial landscape. The upper platform rewards the climb with a view back down the wooded hill; the tomb chamber remains closed. Choose #2 instead if imperial history and a gentler walk matter more than stairs.
Hours
08:30–17:00; Monday maintenance closure, except national holidays and Sun Yat-sen's birth/death anniversaries. Follow the reserved entry time.
Tickets
Free, with an online real-name slot through the official 钟山风景区 mini-program entry. Passport is an accepted identity document in the operator guide. A park combination ticket for other sights does not replace this reservation. For a failed identity/phone form, use the ticket service +86 25 84437786 before assigning the hill block.
Time
1½–2 h, plus the hill approach; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Address
中山陵景区(南广场上山入口)· 南京市玄武区钟山风景区中山陵南广场. Select 中山陵南广场 / 中山陵 in navigation, rather than the park administration's 石象路7号 address.
Getting there
From Xinjiekou take Line 2 east to 下马坊, then follow the operator's scenic connection to 中山陵. During traffic controls this is a shuttle/walking last leg, rather than a taxi to the stairs. 苜蓿园 suits #2 first; its onward shuttle may require walking to 美龄宫(十朝文化园站).
How to visit
South approach → 博爱坊 → 陵门 → 碑亭 → stairway → 祭堂 / upper platform → return down the same axis to the signed shuttle stop. Keep your energy for the descent. A shorter visit stops at the lower architectural sequence; it gives up the upper memorial, rather than claiming an equivalent stair-free experience.
Zhongshan / east
2. Ming Xiaoling · 明孝陵
The stone animals, civil and military figures and surviving ceremonial buildings explain the first Ming emperor's burial landscape. This is a large imperial site in woodland, with a different historical subject and walking route from #1. Plum blossom is a seasonal addition; the tomb landscape stands on its own.
Hours
The operator publishes ticket-sales hours: February–November 06:30–18:30; December–January 07:00–17:30. These do not guarantee every building stays open that late. The separate Xiaoling Museum is 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30, closed Monday.
Tickets
CNY 70 adult; purchase at the attraction entrance with a passport, or through the operator's linked mini-program. The CNY 100 combination covers Xiaoling, Linggu, Music Stage and Meiling Palace; buy it only when you will use those extra sites. #1 remains separately reserved and free.
Time
2½–3 h, plus approach; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Address
明孝陵景区(3号门,梅花谷入口)· 南京市玄武区钟山风景区梅花谷片区. The operator's gate route identifies 3号门 as the approach from 苜蓿园; this is a named entrance, without an invented street number.
Getting there
Line 2 to 苜蓿园, then walk uphill on the signed scenic approach to 明孝陵3号门. Carry the Chinese gate name into the map. For a road arrival, use the same gate and expect holiday road controls to move the last leg to walking.
How to visit
Gate 3 → 梅花谷 / 玉兰路 → 石象路 animal pairs → 翁仲路 figures → 文武方门 → 方城明楼 and the burial-mound landscape. Return to Gate 3 for the metro route; an onward #1 visit can use Gate 7 and the signed scenic transport. Keep time for both the Sacred Way and ceremonial core; entering late for one photograph loses much of the site's value.
Minggugong / east of centre
3. Nanjing Museum · 南京博物院
Start with the History Hall's Jiangsu archaeology and imperial-period objects, then choose an Art Hall collection or the recreated Republican-era street in the Republic of China Hall. The museum rewards selection rather than a hurried attempt at every hall. Temporary exhibitions and closures change the available rooms.
Hours
The regular schedule and booking rules give 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00; normally closed Monday, with holiday and summer/winter-vacation arrangements announced separately. Regular entry slots are morning 09:00–13:00, with entry before 13:00, or afternoon 12:00–16:00. Enter during the slot on your successful reservation: the museum refuses admission after a missed slot. A temporary notice can change hours or the closed day; extended opening does not itself extend your booked entry slot.
Tickets
Permanent collections and in-house collection displays are free; some commercial temporary exhibitions cost extra. All visitors need the museum's official WeChat reservation. At 18:00 each day, tickets for the newly opened date seven days ahead are released in one batch. Nearer dates depend on remaining or returned inventory shown in the official booking interface. Bring the original document used in the booking and its success record. The museum's published booking rules do not establish a foreign-passport online checkout; confirm the current passport reservation and manual-validation route with the museum before fixing this stop.
Time
3–4 h inside; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Address
南京博物院(正门 / 南侧入口)· 南京市玄武区中山东路321号. Foreign-passport visitors with a successful reservation go to 正门东侧绿色通道服务窗口 for manual admission.
Getting there
Line 2 to 明故宫, Exit 1, then walk east along 中山东路 about 300m to the museum's main entrance, following the museum's directions. From a central hotel this remains a city metro trip, rather than a Zhongshan shuttle stop.
How to visit
Main entrance east-side service window → security → History Hall → one chosen art collection → Republic of China Hall if open → signed main exit back to 中山东路 and 明故宫. The Intangible Heritage Hall has a continuing temporary-closure notice on the museum notice board at this reading; avoid building your visit around its performances. Store a large suitcase before entry.
Changjiang Road / centre-east
4. Presidential Palace · 南京总统府
The central office axis, Republican-government rooms and west garden place Nanjing's political history in buildings. This is a historic compound with exhibitions, rather than a functioning presidential residence. Choose the main office route and one garden wing before adding every room.
CNY 35 adult through the authorised 南京总统府 WeChat mini-program linked in the operator's ticket instructions; use the issued date/time and original identity document. The published passport wording explicitly covers foreign senior concessions, while general foreign-passport checkout is less explicit. If the form offers no usable passport choice, the ticket desk +86 25 84578888 is the recovery route before fixing this block; #3 or #7 gives a practical alternative.
Time
2½–3 h inside; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Address
南京总统府(长江路主入口)· 南京市玄武区长江路292号.
Getting there
Line 2 or 3 to 大行宫, Exit 5; walk to 长江路, turn right and continue about 200m to the main gate, as described by the operator. Return to the same metro station for Xinjiekou.
How to visit
Main gate → 大堂 / central exhibition axis → 子超楼 office displays → west-side 煦园 and Sun Yat-sen office area → return to the marked exit at the front of the compound. Add the east wing only with time and interest. The July 31 notice places the gate building and 桐音馆 behind works fencing from August 15, without a published end date; the front-gate photograph and those interiors may be affected.
Qinhuai / south
5. Qinhuai riverfront / Confucius Temple district · 夫子庙—秦淮风光带
The river, 文德桥 and temple-front square give a compact evening contrast to the hill and museums. The public district is commercially busy; choose a short river walk for its landscape, then a paid Confucian or imperial-examination interior only if that subject interests you.
Hours
Use daylight for historical details and early evening for the river frontage. Streets have individual shop hours; paid halls and boat sailings have their own schedules. During major holidays and July 20–August 20, the district's traffic policy applies 14:00–22:00 controls and core-area access management.
Tickets
The public walk is free. Peak-period core entry uses the official 南京夫子庙 Alipay mini-program; this is separate from a paid temple, examination museum or boat ticket. Actual reservation gates were operating in February 2026. A foreign-passport option in that core-entry form has not been demonstrated here; if blocked, use the staffed entrance assistance or choose #6 outside that core for your south-city evening.
Time
1½–2 h public walk, plus dinner; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Address
夫子庙—秦淮风光带(贡院西街 / 西牌坊一侧)· 南京市秦淮区贡院西街53号(municipal scenic-area listing). The separate Confucius Temple interior is 贡院街152号.
Getting there
Line 3 or 5 to 夫子庙, or Line 1/5 to 三山街; follow signs to the core entrance rather than trying to enter by a road vehicle. From Laomendong walk via 马道街 and the mapped pedestrian streets toward 贡院西街; allow 25–35 min between the districts.
How to visit
West-side entrance → temple-front square → Qinhuai riverbank and 文德桥 → 贡院街 frontage → return by an open signed gate to 夫子庙 / 三山街 metro. Follow one-way pedestrian routing when activated. For the free river walk, skip the boat queue; for Confucian rituals and architecture, add the separate Confucius Temple interior and its on-site ticket.
Qinhuai / south
6. Laomendong · 老门东
Restored streets, low rooflines and the city wall frame a different south-city walk from the Qinhuai waterfront. Come for the lane pattern and a seated meal, rather than assuming every building is an untouched historical house or every snack queue is worthwhile.
Hours
Public outdoor lane walk, best in daylight through early evening; individual restaurants, galleries and performances keep their own hours. The district profile lists no single closing time for all lanes.
Tickets
No general neighbourhood admission charge. Pay separately for food, purchases or a selected performance. Visitor centre: +86 25 58776699.
Time
1½–2 h, plus a meal; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Line 3 to 武定门, then walk west on 马道街 toward 箍桶巷 / 剪子巷. Line 1/5 三山街 is an alternative approach from the north. Expect the final lane segment to be on foot, especially during holiday road controls.
How to visit
Entrance arch → 箍桶巷 → one branch through 三条营 / 中营 → the city-wall backdrop → loop back to the arch. Continue north toward #5 only if you still want a riverfront evening; otherwise return by 马道街 to 武定门 and your original hotel. This walk gives its own lane-and-wall experience; it is not simply a second name for #5.
North of centre
7. Xuanwu Lake · 玄武湖
A short shore-and-island walk balances the collection-heavy city and shows the wall from ground level. The whole lake circuit is a substantially longer outing; choose a few connected viewpoints instead of promising every island and the full perimeter in one short stop.
Hours
Plan the outdoor route in daylight. Event areas, facilities and night access can have different closing arrangements; the park's current visitor notices govern those. A daylight visit avoids relying on an unsupported all-night island-access claim.
Tickets
General park admission free. Rental boats, tours and commercial activities cost separately; this guide's route uses the public paths.
Time
1½–2 h short route; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Address
玄武湖公园(玄武门入口)· 南京市玄武区玄武巷1号(municipal entrance listing). The park's own contact page uses 玄武门路1号; navigate by 玄武门, not merely a pin anywhere on the lake.
Getting there
Line 1 to 玄武门, then follow park signs to the named gate. For the southern lake / #8 pair, Line 3 or 4 鸡鸣寺 gives the 解放门 approach. From 南京站 you are on the opposite side of the lake; go to your chosen gate rather than treating the station frontage as this route's start.
How to visit
Operator short-route map: 玄武门 → 假山瀑布 → 环洲龙吟堤 → 月季园 → 台菱堤 → 解放门. Return to the metro via the same gate, or end at 解放门 for #8 and 鸡鸣寺 station. In heat or low energy, walk only the near shore and reverse; save the island detour for another visit.
Jiefangmen / north
8. Nanjing City Wall, Taicheng section · 南京城墙台城段
The top of the wall gives lake, Purple Mountain and Jiming Temple rooflines in one landscape, while the brickwork shows the scale of the Ming capital's defences. It adds an elevated perspective to #7; travellers who prefer level walking can keep the lake and skip this ticket.
Hours
Operator standard opening 08:30–17:00, subject to seasonal or temporary changes. Late-night programmes advertised for 中华门 are on the south wall, rather than a promise for this northern section.
Tickets
The operator lists CNY 30 for the north section 神策门—太平门, which includes this Taicheng walk. Buy the relevant north-section admission at its official ticket point. A CNY 50 south-section ticket is a different product.
Time
1–1½ h short wall walk; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Line 3/4 鸡鸣寺, then follow signs through the temple/lake approach to 解放门. From #7's southern end you are already beside this wall access. Stairs are part of reaching the top.
How to visit
解放门 ticket point → stairs → Taicheng lake-view stretch → return down at 解放门. With more energy, continue toward 玄武门: the 1.4 km linking wall stretch reopened in August 2025. Use that exit only when signed open; keep #7 as the level-walking alternative if wall steps or wet surfaces are unsuitable.
Yunjinlu / west
9. Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall · 侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆
This is a serious historical and commemorative visit, with documentary evidence, survivor testimony and memorial spaces. Give it a quiet block rather than a hurried stop before dinner. Graphic material and the emotional weight matter when choosing a visit with children.
Hours
08:30–17:30, last admission 16:30; Monday closed except statutory holidays. Morning booked entry may extend to 13:00; afternoon entry may begin 12:00. The separate Lijixiang venue opens 09:00, which does not change this hall's opening.
Tickets
Free real-name reservation through the official full-name memorial WeChat account. The current guide explicitly accepts passports. Tickets release 08:00 for 1–7 days ahead; the FAQ excludes visit-day reservations. Select 南京大屠杀史实展 for this visit; 三个必胜 and 利济巷 are separately reserved venues. Bring the original passport and booking record; phone +86 25 86612230 if identity entry fails.
Time
2–3 h, plus city transfer; walking and travel allowances are editorial estimates.
Address
侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆(史实展 / 一号门)· 南京市建邺区水西门大街418号.
Getting there
Line 2 west to 云锦路. The operator directs ordinary visitors from Exit 2 to Gate 1; holidays / large crowds use Exit 3 to the same gate. Follow the active signs rather than confusing the 三个必胜 parking/entrance with this exhibition.
How to visit
Gate 1 → 南京大屠杀史实展 chronological evidence and testimony → marked memorial / remembrance spaces → signed visitor exit → 云锦路 station → Line 2 back to Xinjiekou. Leave room for a pause afterwards; add a second memorial exhibition only with its separate reservation and enough time.
Day trips and your next stop
Qixia Mountain / 栖霞山: a separate northeastern outing. Go for 栖霞寺, the Buddhist rock carvings at 千佛岩 and the wooded hillside; autumn colour is an extra whose timing varies. Allow 4–5 h there and roughly 45–90 min each way by road, an editorial range that grows during maple-season traffic. Have your hotel arrange the outward and return car to 栖霞山景区西门 · 南京市栖霞区栖霞街88号; agree a daylight return to the same hotel, using that named gate as the pickup point. The newly opened Line 6 reaches 栖霞山 station, but this recommendation uses a car because the current station-to-gate last leg has not been established here.
Route details, choices and return steps
The district's regulated admission is CNY 50 ordinarily and CNY 80 during the red-maple festival. For a foreign-passport purchase, Klook's specific Qixia admission product explicitly lists original passport plus QR, south/west gate entry, a chosen-date ticket and confirmation within 24 h. Its displayed visit window is 07:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; temple 08:00–17:00. Those are that supplier's offered terms, not proof of every operator checkout route. Use the dated checkout's actual price and successful confirmation before paying for transport; its refund threshold is more than 24 h before use. No purchase was performed here.
West gate → 栖霞寺 → 舍利塔 / 千佛岩 → a selected uphill forest path → same west gate and booked car → original Nanjing hotel. Skip the long climb if conditions or energy favour the temple / carvings alone. It needs an extra day or replaces another block; adding it to a Mausoleum afternoon produces a poor return margin.
Leaving for Suzhou or Shanghai: use 12306 for the dated 南京 / 南京南 → 苏州 / 苏州北 or 上海 / 上海虹桥 pair, then book the destination hotel against that actual arrival. These cities deserve their own nights. Keep the Nanjing hotel-to-station reverse from above; an early flight from another city often calls for a final night there rather than a speculative same-morning connection.
What to eat, and where it fits
Solo near Xinjiekou:
use the 丰富路—明瓦廊 food-street area for a seated bowl of 鸭血粉丝汤 / duck-blood vermicelli soup. The usual dish combines glass noodles, duck blood and often duck offal with tofu products in savoury broth; order 鸭血粉丝汤,一碗,不加辣 for one bowl without added chilli. Ask 去掉内脏 to remove offal, understanding that this still leaves a duck-based dish. A visible menu and an available seat are better selection signals than the longest queue.
Two or more after #6/#5:
share a plate of 盐水鸭 / salted duck, beef potstickers 牛肉锅贴 and soup in the Laomendong / Qinhuai lanes. Salted duck is savoury, aromatic and commonly served chopped and cool; 板鸭 is a different, more cured product. For a small share ask 盐水鸭,少量切盘. 金同记 at 太平南路针巷11号 is a named city potsticker option from the local-history office's 2025 account, suited to a central-city lunch detour: crisp pan-fried beef dumplings with beef soup, rather than an added south-lane transport chase.
A small sweet addition:
look for 桂花糖芋苗, sweet taro with osmanthus, or 赤豆元宵, a sweet red-bean bowl with small rice-flour balls, on the actual shop menu. One shared bowl makes sense after the duck / dumplings; a solo soup meal can stand alone. For a vegetarian, blood-free or halal requirement, select a restaurant that can answer the ingredient question: removing a visible topping does not establish a suitable broth, kitchen or certification. Prices come from the dated menu; no restaurant meal or diet suitability was tested here.
Weather, energy and a workable shorter visit
Rain:
use #3 and #4 with held admissions for an indoor-heavy block. The Palace still has outdoor paths. Wet hill stairs and wall steps favour removing #1/#8, while a short south-lane meal remains possible. A sold-out indoor reservation does not become available simply because the weather changed.
Heat:
keep only one major Zhongshan object in the morning, shorten #7 to the nearest shore and return to the original hotel for a break before #6/#5. Long stone approaches, stairs and sunny wall sections accumulate effort. Spring plum blossom and autumn foliage are bonuses, rather than reasons to promise a particular bloom or colour date.
Mobility or fatigue:
prioritise the Museum's chosen galleries and a short lake route; the Mausoleum's upper memorial and wall-top views involve stairs. The park visitor centre offers mobility equipment with deposits, but that does not make every hill route stair-free. Reduce scope at the entrance instead of depending on an unproved vehicle shortcut.
A missing booking or late arrival:
choose #7/#8 in daylight or one of #6/#5 for an evening, respecting Qinhuai peak-entry arrangements. Keep the museum on another successful slot; use official cancellation routes for an entry you will miss. You still have a coherent visit without claiming every listed sight.
Choose your wider Jiangsu route
Compare Nanjing with Suzhou, Wuxi and Yangzhou → The province route keeps a shorter two-night Nanjing history block; the complete city plan above needs three full sightseeing days and four nights.
Sources and update scope
Operational sources read 1 October 2026; the museum's regular hours, morning/afternoon entry rules and operator notice channel were rechecked on 2 October. Standard schedules can be displaced by a dated holiday, maintenance or crowd notice. Journey / visit durations, combinations and cuts are editorial planning advice. Passport form completion, purchases, hotel stays and restaurant meals were not field-tested; no Google search-volume or ranking evidence is claimed.
