Hubei · A Yangtze city and a gateway to the gorges

Yichang Choose the excursion first, then put the right port, documents and return journey around it.

Yichang gives you both a lived-in Yangtze waterfront and access to the engineered and natural landscapes upstream. The city is worth a relaxed day of river walking, local snacks and museum time. A second day can be a much bigger experience: the Three Gorges Dam, a Xiling Gorge cruise, or a combined operator-run route.

The useful first decision is which exact excursion you want. “Two Dams and One Gorge” is a family of products, not a single universal timetable. A ship-lift experience, a dam viewpoint visit and a multi-night Yangtze cruise are different purchases. For foreign visitors, confirm the actual document and ticket route before paying for a dam-bound journey; this guide keeps a complete city alternative if that cannot be arranged.

Navigation: search the Chinese name in Amap.

Best first combination: a city day split between the museum and central waterfront, followed by one confirmed gorge or dam excursion. Choose the dam for engineering viewpoints; choose a boat-led day for scenery and time on the river. A night river cruise is another product, not a substitute for reaching Xiling Gorge.

Want more nature? Three Gorges Tribe (三峡人家), Sanyou Cave (三游洞) and the Three Gorges Waterfall (三峡大瀑布) are different outings with their own entry and road journeys. Select one with current transport and return arrangements rather than attaching all three to the default day. A multi-night Yangtze cruise toward Chongqing changes your accommodation and transport plan completely.

Dry, clear days favour long river views. Summer heat calls for shade and water on deck or on the waterfront; heavy rain, fog and navigation restrictions can change a cruise regardless of a favourable forecast in town. Keep the excursion booking flexible where possible and a city day available to swap.

Two full days with three hotel nights

  1. Arrival evening · night 1: transfer to the city hotel, have dinner and confirm the excursion meeting point in Chinese. Do not count a late arrival as the city day.
  2. Full day 1 · night 2: visit Yichang Museum in the morning when open, with individual entry confirmed if needed. Return toward the centre for lunch and a break; walk Zhenjiang Pavilion, the accessible waterfront and Erma Road in the afternoon. Swap the museum block to another open day if Monday falls here.
  3. Full day 2 · night 3: take your confirmed dam or gorge itinerary, carrying the original passport and the operator contact. Return to the stated city drop-off and keep dinner near the hotel.
  4. Departure morning: collect luggage and reach the exact railway station or airport with room for security and the road connection.

If the excursion cannot be confirmed: make a complete city day of the museum, lunch, the central old streets and river walk. If the museum is closed too, spend the morning around Erma Road and nearby streets, take a seated lunch/rest, then explore the open river promenade in the afternoon. Keep a second day only if you want that slower pace or can confirm a separate nature outing; otherwise use two nights for one full city day. The alternative does not require entry to any controlled dam site.

Choose a city base around your real departure point

  • Central Xiling, around the riverfront or Yiling Square (夷陵广场): practical for food, the city route and a range of hotels. Check the actual distance to your booked departure port; “river view” does not mean “next to the right boat.”
  • Near a confirmed visitor centre or port: useful for an early start, but only after the operator supplies the exact address. Do not book near Yanjiang Avenue 142 for a Yemingzhu departure merely because both advertise Three Gorges trips.
  • Wujiagang / Yichang East station: convenient for some trains and the city museum, with a road journey to the older central waterfront. Choose it when those logistics matter more than walking out to the old streets.
  • Sandouping or another upstream base: suitable for a trip deliberately centred there, with admission, meals and transport settled. It is unnecessary for the default city-based day tour.

After choosing the area, use Trip.com hotel search with Yichang, your dates, two adults and one room, then check the exact address near 西陵区沿江大道 / 夷陵广场, or the exact booked port. Confirm the property can complete check-in with your original foreign passport, the cancellation terms and the vehicle entrance. See the foreign-passport hotel check-in guide if the property gives conflicting instructions.

Build the city day around snacks and a seated meal

Radish dumplings (萝卜饺子) are a useful local snack to look for around the old streets: the name does not imply an ordinary boiled wheat dumpling. Ask about the filling and oil, and buy a small freshly prepared portion. Chilli-oil buns (红油包子) are another local breakfast choice; they are not the easiest option if you need to avoid spice.

For two people, a normal restaurant meal of one meat or fish dish, a vegetable and rice is more manageable than ordering every regional speciality. Ask whether fish is priced per dish or by weight, and expect bones. A mild stir-fried vegetable and plain rice are useful additions, but ask about meat stock and animal fat before treating them as vegetarian.

Before a morning cruise, eat near the hotel or choose a booking with a clearly included meal. Carry water and a simple snack; a restaurant at the final city drop-off does not solve lunch during the river itinerary. Check whether onboard upgrades and drinks are outside the quoted product.

Budget the city stay, then add the actual excursion

For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full days, use 3R + F + T + 2P + X. R is the room-night rate, F food from arrival dinner to departure breakfast, T city transport and two city-station transfers, P your chosen per-adult excursion including its required transport and admission, and X optional services.

Example planning inputs: R = ¥300, F = ¥460–660, T = ¥160–260, P = ¥350 and X = ¥0–100. This gives ¥2,220–2,620 for two: ¥900 + ¥460–660 + ¥160–260 + ¥700 + ¥0–100. P is a worked allowance, not an advertised current ticket price. Replace it with the operator’s complete foreign-visitor quote; reduce food only when a meal is explicitly included.

For a dam-only road trip, replace 2P with the actual shared return vehicle cost plus both visitors’ required admission and scenic transport. Do not add a road cost already included in the package. Intercity travel, airport transfers, a multi-night Yangtze cruise, premium decks and shopping are excluded. The shorter city-only version removes one room-night, the excursion and the corresponding meals.

The city and upstream choices in detail

1. Zhenjiang Pavilion and the city riverfront · 镇江阁 · 沿江大道 · 二马路

Start at the river-facing Zhenjiang Pavilion area, then use the signed public waterfront paths and the old-street cluster around Erma Road. The broad river, working vessels and changing city edge provide the interest. A daylight walk is useful even if you have booked a scenic cruise: it gives the departure city its own context.

Move inland for a snack or a seated meal rather than trying to follow the entire riverfront in one go. Sections can be exposed to sun or wind, and river conditions can close lower paths. Stay on open promenades and return to a road-accessible pickup point when you have walked enough. This route does not require a performance, tower climb or boat ticket.

Hours
Use daylight or early evening; respect any riverfront closure and individual business hours.
Tickets
No city-wide attraction pass is needed for the public route.
Time
Half a day with food and breaks
Chinese address
导航:镇江阁、二马路,湖北省宜昌市西陵区
Getting there
Taxi or city bus to 镇江阁 / 二马路; walk between suitable open sections and use a road ride back to your hotel.
How to visit
Split the walk around lunch or a hotel break. Do not descend onto closed flood-prone paths or mistake a working jetty for a public boarding point.

2. Yichang Museum · 宜昌博物馆

The city museum gives Yichang more depth than a transit night before a cruise. Choose the Ba–Chu and city-history displays, then the reconstructed old-street setting if open. That street display recreates older urban scenes inside the museum; it should not be mistaken for an intact original neighbourhood.

This is the useful indoor city option, especially when rain weakens the appeal of a long waterfront walk. It is not the Three Gorges Engineering Museum inside the controlled dam area. Their locations, access arrangements and transport are different, so save the Chinese museum name and the Qiusuo Road address before ordering a car.

Hours
Official regular hours: Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00; Monday closed except statutory holidays. Check special notices.
Tickets
The current contact page does not settle foreign-passport individual admission. Call 0717-6555525 before the journey if you need confirmation; guide/audio services can be charged separately.
Time
2–3 hours plus the city journey
Chinese address
宜昌市伍家岗区求索路,宜昌博物馆(西门)
Getting there
Take a taxi to the Qiusuo Road visitor entrance, or use the museum’s current BRT/bus instructions. Return to the central hotel by road; this is not a walk-on stop beside Zhenjiang Pavilion.
How to visit
Allow enough time before the 16:00 entry cutoff. Carry your original passport and ask the staffed desk if an automated gate does not recognise it. If entry is unavailable, use the central old-street and riverfront route rather than travelling into the dam zone for a substitute museum.

3. Three Gorges Dam scenic visit · 三峡大坝旅游区

The dam visit is for travellers who want to understand the scale of the project and see the open observation areas. It is a managed scenic route, not permission to walk on the working dam or to explore industrial areas independently. The exact viewpoint order depends on the product and what is open.

Published operator notices have offered foreign visitors onsite booking with valid documents, but the notice checked here was for a past holiday. It is evidence of an available document route at that time, not a guarantee for your date. Before leaving town, ask the operator to confirm the passport procedure, current visitor window, total charges, transfer centre and return. A domestic “free admission” headline is not a verified all-in foreign-visitor quote.

Hours
Use the current date and session confirmed by the operator. Historical holiday hours are not treated as the normal schedule.
Tickets
Official contact: 0717-6763498 or 0717-6763888; official WeChat service account 三峡大坝旅游. Ask specifically about a foreign passport, admission, mandatory transport and whether advance arrangements are needed.
Time
A substantial half day to a full day including city transfers
Chinese address
导航:三峡大坝游客换乘中心,按已确认产品的集合点前往
Getting there
Use an operator-arranged excursion or licensed road transfer that explicitly handles the controlled-zone vehicle arrangements. The driver/operator must confirm the required vehicle pass; do not assume an ordinary car can proceed through every checkpoint.
How to visit
Carry the original passport and retain the booking/contact details. Confirm the last return before entering the scenic route. If the operator cannot confirm your document route, retain the city plan instead of making a speculative trip to the checkpoint.

4. A Xiling Gorge or Two Dams and One Gorge day · 西陵峡 · 两坝一峡

A boat-based day suits travellers who value gorge scenery more than a sequence of city monuments. Compare the itinerary carefully: some products combine road and boat travel, some include a dam visit, and some focus on the ship lift. Seeing the dam from a distance is not the same as entering its scenic area, and passing a lock is not automatically a ship-lift ride.

The city has published newer routes departing and returning at Yemingzhu Port, while older operator information uses the Three Gorges Visitor Centre on Yanjiang Avenue. These names are not interchangeable. Buy the specific departure you can reach, save its Chinese meeting point and return arrangement, and leave the whole day free. Weather and navigation operations can alter the programme.

Hours
The booked product controls meeting time, boarding cutoff and return; no universal departure is promised.
Tickets
Operator service contact 0717-6910001. Ask what happens if navigation conditions cancel or shorten the trip, and whether optional decks, transport, meals or dam admission cost extra.
Time
One full day; overnight again in Yichang
Chinese address
按票面集合:三峡游客中心(沿江大道142号)或三峡游轮中心·夜明珠港等,不可互换
Getting there
Use a taxi or confirmed pickup to the exact ticketed port/centre. Some products return by bus and some by boat; record the actual final city drop-off before buying.
How to visit
If the itinerary enters the dam zone, resolve the foreign-document question with that operator too. Do not book an onward train close to the advertised return; stay the night and depart next morning.

Save the station and port names separately

Use China Railway 12306 for the actual train and station. Yichang East (宜昌东站) is a useful gateway to compare; any other station named on your ticket needs its own road plan. Send the precise Chinese name to the hotel and use the licensed taxi rank or a current bus service after arrival.

Yichang Sanxia Airport (宜昌三峡机场) requires a road transfer. For a late landing, arrange a dated licensed ride or confirm an operating airport bus before relying on it. An airport name containing “Three Gorges” does not place you at a scenic-area entrance.

Within the city, use walking for the central waterfront cluster and road transport for the museum or farther hotels. For an excursion, save the meeting point, not just the attraction name. The official operator’s older Yanjiang Avenue address and newer Yemingzhu routes demonstrate why one generic pickup instruction is unreliable.

Confirm the exact end point, last return and cancellation terms before paying. A river product can return in a different mode from the outward trip, and navigation delays make a same-evening flight or tight train connection a poor default. Stay in the city after the excursion.

Choose another city or a longer river journey

Wuhan adds a larger urban Yangtze experience. Xiangyang changes the focus to Han River walls and Three Kingdoms history. A cruise onward to Chongqing should be booked and timed as a separate multi-night journey, with its actual embarkation and final city transfer confirmed.

What is verified, and what needs a dated operator answer
