EASTERN GUANGDONG · PORT ARCADES, TEOCHEW FOOD & THE BAY
Shantou Leave room between meals and give the old port time
Choose Shantou for food and the streets of an old trading port. Around Small Park, curved arcades and the central pavilion give the city a recognisable face; meals range from rice-noodle soup to a shared beef hotpot. The bay adds space and sea air between crowded lanes. Two full days work well if eating slowly is part of the trip.
Shantou is a modern city around a restored historic core, not a compact preserved ancient town. For temples, craft streets and the Han River bridge, add Chaozhou with its own time. For a beach stay, choose Nan’ao separately: it is not the opposite shore of the city ferry. The city plan below remains useful without an island excursion or a particular performance.

Two city days, with meals as the anchors

Another food district; road transfer from old centre. Main city arrival; Chaoshan and Shantou South are separate stations. Separate island extension; not the city ferry’s opposite bank. A food-led first stay
Arrive and eat near the hotel. On the first full day, walk Small Park in the morning, have a noodle lunch around the old centre and rest through the hottest part of the day. Take a short north-bank bay walk later, then choose a seated beef-hotpot dinner. On the second full day, use a confirmed morning slot at the Expo Center, return for lunch, and spend the late afternoon in a different food area such as Longyan South Road. Keep the two big dinners on different days.
An evening arrival, two full days and a morning departure means three nights. If the museum is closed or its document route is unresolved, the second day becomes a slower food-and-streets day: breakfast away from the pavilion, time in open small heritage venues, a café break and a different dinner. Visitors who want only the central streets can comfortably choose one full day and two nights.
Queshi or Nan’ao?
Queshi / 礐石 is the hilly south side of the city bay: choose a marked walking route in dry daylight and return by road or an operating ferry. Climbing, cable-car operation and the museum are separate choices. Nan’ao / 南澳岛 is a separate island outing; add a full day, preferably an island night if you want both coast and villages, rather than adding it after the museum. A mainland bus to Houzhai does not complete a circuit to Qing’ao Bay and back. Use a dated round-trip transport plan, confirm the last mainland return before leaving, and keep bridge traffic out of a tight train or flight connection.
For a short first visit, keep the city stay in mild, dry conditions. Hot humid weather favours early street walks and indoor midday breaks; coastal storm warnings can remove boat and island plans altogether.
Three meals are more useful than ten queues
Beef hotpot / 牛肉火锅: make this one seated dinner. Order a modest selection of cuts, meatballs, vegetables and a starch, then add more if needed. Ask the restaurant to explain cooking by cut and cook the food properly; a social-media stopwatch is not a food-safety rule. Soup base, sauces and cover charges may be separate, so check the whole menu.
Guotiao / 粿条 are rice noodles, often with meat or offal. They suit lunch between street walks; specify whether you want 牛肉 / beef, 猪杂 / pork offal or another topping. Haolao / 蚝烙, an oyster-and-starch omelette, is a richer shared snack rather than a substitute for every meal. Shellfish and fish sauce matter for allergies.
Braised goose / 卤鹅 works as a plate to share with vegetables and rice. For a lighter stop choose a rice cake, tofu dessert or almond drink, checking fillings and nuts. Zhenbang Road fits the old-city day; Longyan South Road / 龙眼南路 suits the second evening, with a road transfer rather than a claim that the two streets are adjacent. Choose a shop that is actually cooking and can explain the order; no particular vendor or queue is essential.
Raw-marinated seafood / 生腌 is a local style, but the cooked-food route is the straightforward choice if you do not want it. A vegetarian-looking sauce or noodle soup may contain fish, meat stock or lard. Ask about the broth and condiments, not just the visible topping.
Old-city atmosphere or easier modern-hotel logistics
Default for this trip: the edge of Small Park / 小公园. Stay within a manageable walk of the old streets but on a road a taxi can reach. You gain easy mornings and dinners; older buildings, pedestrian access and street noise require closer room checks.
Jinsha Road / 金砂路 and the modern commercial centre suit travellers who prefer a larger hotel, lifts and straightforward vehicle pickup. You will make road trips to the old quarter, but Longyan Road meals and other city restaurants are easier to mix in. Shantou station is a departure convenience, not the default for repeated old-city evenings. A hotel on Nan’ao belongs to an island stay; it is not an interchangeable Shantou city base.
At Trip.com hotels, search Shantou with every night and all guests, then use the map around Small Park or your chosen Jinsha Road junction. Compare the actual entrance, room type, cancellation terms and full total. Confirm foreign-passport check-in and a late arrival with the property before paying a non-refundable rate. These are area choices, not inspected hotel endorsements.
A three-night budget for two people
For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full city days, use 3R + F + T + E. R is the actual room total per night; F covers meals from arrival dinner to departure breakfast; T covers city transfers including two trips between Shantou station and the hotel; E covers optional boat rides, paid interiors or shows. Ordinary old-city and promenade walks and the Expo Center’s public halls do not require a general paid sightseeing ticket.
With editable inputs R = CNY 350, F = CNY 600–900, T = CNY 160–300, E = CNY 0–120, the example totals CNY 1,810–2,370 for two, or CNY 905–1,185 each. These are planning allowances, not restaurant, taxi or hotel quotes. E = 0 means using the free core and taking no paid extras.
Exclude travel to Shantou, airport or Chaoshan-station transfers, Nan’ao, shopping, alcohol and private guides. Add those actual quotes separately. A solo traveller pays the room and many taxi costs alone; halving this shared-room total does not give a solo budget.
The port streets, the bay and regional culture
1. Small Park and the old port quarter · 小公园开埠区
Start at Zhongshan Memorial Pavilion and look outward along the radiating streets. The arcades once joined commerce and shelter: shopfronts below, rooms and balconies above. The Nansheng department-store building is a useful visual anchor. Look up at the corners and upper-storey details rather than treating the pavilion as the entire visit.
Continue through Guoping and Shengping roads, then choose the lanes toward Laomagong and Zhenbang Road for food. Restored shopfronts, active businesses and heritage buildings coexist. Qiaopi displays explain the letters and remittances that connected migrants abroad with families at home; visit an open exhibition if its entry conditions fit, but the public-street walk does not depend on a museum slot.
Hours
Visit the outdoor streets in daylight or early evening. Individual heritage interiors and shops keep their own hours; no fixed daily opera or Yingge performance is promised.
Tickets
No district-wide admission is needed for the public streets. Check any venue or performance separately; do not buy a tour merely to enter the lanes.
Time
Half a day with a meal and pauses
Chinese address
汕头市金平区小公园中山纪念亭;国平路、升平路及镇邦路周边。
Getting there
Use a taxi to 小公园中山纪念亭 or a legal drop-off outside the pedestrian core. Walk within the quarter; save the return pickup on a vehicle-accessible road, not in the pavilion square.
How to visit
Pavilion → a short loop of the arcades → Laomagong surroundings → Zhenbang Road meal. Pause in a café in heat or rain; do not walk under cordoned-off renovation work.
2. North-bank bay walk · 海滨长廊 · 广场轮渡周边
Use the north-bank promenade for a different view of the city: open water, passing vessels and the hills across the bay. A short section around the Square Ferry area is enough between lunch and dinner. This is a city waterfront, not a swimming beach.
A ferry crossing can be an enjoyable extra when the actual service is running, but it changes your return logistics. Guangchang Ferry connects the bay-side city with Queshi; it is not a ticket to Nan’ao Island. The south-bank Queshi hills and the Expo Center are also different destinations, with a road connection between them.
Hours
Choose daylight or early evening on an open public section. Wind, storm warnings and temporary shore closures override the plan; a light display is not guaranteed.
Tickets
No attraction ticket for the ordinary promenade. If taking a ferry, establish whether the ticket is one-way and buy the appropriate return separately.
Time
1–2 hours for a selected shoreline section
Chinese address
汕头市金平区海滨路,广场轮渡码头周边。
Getting there
Taxi or local bus to 广场轮渡. Walk only the shoreline section you want, then take a road transfer to the dinner area. Before crossing the bay, read the pier’s current sailing board and confirm the final return from the other side.
How to visit
Short north-bank walk → rest → dinner. If ferry service is suspended, stay on land. If already across, a licensed taxi by road is the recovery option; keep funds for it and do not assume the last sightseeing bus connects with the last ferry.
3. Chaoshan History and Culture Expo Center · 潮汕历史文化博览中心
Choose this for context behind the food and streets. The complex brings together intangible-cultural-heritage displays, overseas-Chinese history and other exhibitions. Pick the craft and migration sections that interest you instead of trying to see every hall; a large building does not require a full day indoors.
This is a separate outing from Small Park. Its broad south-bank setting is worth seeing, but admission is the reason to make the journey. Confirm an entry route before crossing: the published individual reservation rule does not establish that every foreign passport works in the mini-program. A paid show sold by an agency is not the same product as free general entry.
Hours
Published regular schedule: Tuesday–Friday 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; weekends the complex extends to 17:30, but several exhibition halls still stop admission at 16:30 and close at 17:00. Normally closed Monday; holiday notices can change this. A morning visit avoids the different closing times.
Tickets
Use the WeChat mini-program 潮汕历史文化博览中心 and obtain a confirmed time. Foreign-passport booking and staff registration were not tested. If the form only accepts Chinese ID, contact the center through its official account before travelling; do not infer guaranteed walk-in admission from a temporary holiday exception. Keep the old-city/food day if unresolved.
Time
2–3 hours plus the cross-bay road journey
Chinese address
汕头市濠江区南滨路,潮汕历史文化博览中心。
Getting there
A taxi to the named complex and a return taxi to the north bank are the simplest plan. Ferry-plus-shuttle services have been announced, but verify both legs and their return times for your actual day before choosing them. They are not required for this itinerary.
How to visit
Confirmed morning slot → two chosen exhibition sections → lunch back on the north bank. If admission fails, return by road; do not spend the afternoon waiting for an unconfirmed slot.
Shantou station is different from Chaoshan station
For the city stay, compare trains to Shantou / 汕头 first. It is still a road transfer from the station to Small Park; use the signed licensed taxi pickup or a current city-bus route. Chaoshan / 潮汕 is a regional high-speed rail station outside the urban core. A lower rail fare or earlier arrival there can lose its advantage after the onward transfer. Shantou South / 汕头南 is another station, on the south side, and should not be silently substituted for Shantou.
Use China Railway 12306 for the actual station and departure date. Keep the Chinese station name and train number for the driver on departure, and allow for station security and passport checks after the road journey. Seasonal tourist buses from Shantou station to Small Park have been announced; verify that day’s service instead of basing a late arrival on them.
Jieyang Chaoshan Airport / 揭阳潮汕国际机场
The airport is outside Shantou. An operating railway connection to Shantou is documented: search Chaoshan Airport / 潮汕机场 → Shantou / 汕头 for the actual date, leaving time for baggage, the signed airport-to-rail walk and rail boarding. This is a dated train journey, not an always-running metro. If there is no suitable train, compare the staffed airport-bus counter’s actual Shantou stop with a licensed taxi to the hotel. A bus marked Shantou need not stop at your hotel.
For an early outbound flight, arrange a vehicle in advance or confirm a workable dated train before booking it. The city guide does not promise a fixed airport fare or a connection after every flight. Within Shantou, combine walking inside a cluster with road transfers between clusters; save Chinese pickup and destination names if an app account fails.
Add Chaozhou for a different urban story
Chaozhou adds the old town, temples and bridge to a food-led Shantou trip. Give the transfer its own time and check the actual terminal: both cities may use the regional Chaoshan station, but that does not make their centres interchangeable. Continue by a suitable rail service to Xiamen if your wider route follows the coast.
Published rules, with transaction limits kept visible
Sources checked on . Official city and transport pages support the geography, food districts and airport-rail option. The Expo Center’s published regular schedule is separated from temporary holiday arrangements; foreign-passport booking was not tested. Ferry, shuttle, bus and train departure times must match your actual day. No hotel, restaurant, ticket checkout or hired vehicle was field-tested. Visit lengths, the order of meals and budget inputs are editorial planning judgments.
