Nanao Island A curved beach, fishing-town meals and a slower coastal stay; cross by bus and choose a few places rather than chasing the entire ring road.
Nanao, also written Nan'ao, is an island off Shantou in eastern Guangdong. Come for a change of pace after the city's food and streets: a broad sandy bay, a town facing the water and a landscape shaped by fishing as well as tourism. The bridge makes arrival possible by road, but it does not make every coast stop close together or the sea predictable.
Use two island nights around one full sightseeing day. Stay in Houzhai without needing your own car, spend the arrival afternoon near the hotel, and use a pre-arranged licensed return ride for Song Well and Qing'ao Bay the next day. Choose a Qing'ao hotel instead if repeated beach time is the main purpose. Return to Shantou the following day and sleep on the mainland before an important flight or train; bridge traffic and weather should not control a tight same-day connection.

Houzhai, 1, is the service-oriented base: choose a hotel within a manageable walk of meals and a confirmed bus or taxi pickup. Qing'ao Bay, 2, is at the island's eastern end and suits a beach-centred stay. They are different accommodation areas, not two ends of one short promenade.
Yun'ao and Song Well, 3, can join the Qing'ao outing by the southern coastal road, with a vehicle arranged for the whole return. Zongbing Mansion in Shen'ao, 4, is an alternative northern-side history trip. Pick it instead of Song Well if that history is more interesting, or add another day; it is not a required stop on the default day.
The numbered diagram explains the choices, not an accurate navigation route or a pedestrian circuit. The island's roads, bays and hills separate the places. This guide assumes neither a rental scooter nor that a foreign visitor can drive a rented car. For a short first visit, a few longer stops are more useful than accumulating lighthouse photographs along the entire coastline. If unsettled weather removes the coast, keep the time for Shantou's city stay instead.
Four choices, with only a few in the core stay
1. Houzhai waterfront · 后宅镇 · 前江湾海滨
Houzhai is the practical arrival to island life: shops, food, local traffic and a waterfront rather than an isolated resort compound. A short walk and a meal can be a complete first afternoon after the bridge crossing. Choose a manageable section of the promenade rather than walking until the return to the hotel becomes tiring.
The view and the ability to swim are different questions. Keep a town waterfront visit on the land, following the current barriers and signs. A convenient room here makes it easier to obtain help with tomorrow's driver, a changed bus or a weather-related extension; it does not guarantee a beach directly below the balcony is suitable for bathing.
Hours
Use an open waterfront section in daylight or a comfortable early evening. Local closures and weather instructions take precedence over a sea-view room description.
Tickets
A town stroll does not require a bundle of all the island's attractions. Agree restaurant, transport and any optional facility charges separately.
Time
Keep the arrival afternoon and evening loose, with time to eat and confirm tomorrow's return ride.

Getting there
From Shantou station, use an operating Nan'ao-bound 161K or 161A service as described in Arrival. Confirm a served Houzhai stop with the driver, then use the hotel's exact Chinese address for the final walk or short ride.
How to visit
Choose one short promenade stretch close to the hotel and return for a seated meal. Treat this as a town-and-sea view, not an assumed swimming beach. If weather deteriorates, stay with the hotel and change the next day's coast plan.
2. Qing'ao Bay and Nature's Gate · 青澳湾 · 北回归线标志塔自然之门
Qing'ao's long curved shore is the strongest reason to make the island outing. Stand back to see the sweep of the bay, then settle into a shorter walk, a drink and time facing the water. The large Nature's Gate monument marks the Tropic of Cancer and gives the landward side of the visit a distinctive focus.
Keep the visit worthwhile without requiring a swim or a blue-sky photograph. The ministry's bay description establishes the landscape and environmental project, not today's water conditions, tide or bathing permission. Swimming is an optional, condition-dependent activity in the currently designated and supervised zone; this page does not certify a lifeguard schedule or a water-sports operator.
On the default day, arrive with time to relax and have lunch nearby, then return while the agreed road connection is still comfortable. With a Qing'ao overnight, repeated short beach visits may be a better use of time than adding several distant attractions. Stay off rocks or closed shore approaches when wind and surf rise.
Hours
Visit in daylight during the site's actual access period. Beach access does not establish lifeguard service, permission to swim or safe sea conditions.
Tickets
The core outing is a shore walk and the landmark. Check any displayed facility price before accepting a rental or paid activity; this guide has not verified a water-sports operator or a present bathing-zone timetable.
Time
A relaxed half-day is enough for a walk, the landmark, a drink and time to sit; add time if this is your overnight base.

Getting there
For the default outing, use the licensed return car agreed with the Houzhai hotel, with the bay's road-accessible drop-off and pickup specified. Use an island bus only after its actual direction, stop and return service are confirmed.
How to visit
Start around Nature's Gate and the open beach approach, then choose a comfortable stretch of sand. Stay within current barriers and obey the beach staff. If you want to swim, first establish that the designated zone is open and supervised and the conditions permit it; otherwise keep the land-based visit. Return to the same agreed road pickup.
3. Yun'ao and Song Well · 云澳镇 · 宋井
Yun'ao adds a fishing-town context to a beach visit. Boats, working harbour surroundings and the region's seaweed production help explain the meals and dried goods sold on the island. Observe from public, admitted areas; a working pier or aquaculture installation is not automatically a visitor platform.
Song Well is the heritage focus for this side of the route. Local accounts associate the wells with the Song imperial party seeking refuge on the coast. Visit for the story and the relationship between well and shore, rather than assuming every part of the legend is established historical fact or the site is a large museum.
Keep it a modest stop. If the gate is closed, the admission does not suit you or the sea access is restricted, the day still works as a Qing'ao outing with a meal. Do not prolong a roadside detour at the cost of the agreed return to Houzhai.
Hours
Obtain Song Well's same-day gate period and any coastal restriction before adding the stop. A town road being open does not prove the paid site or shoreline is open.

Ask for 宋井普通成人票 at the official desk or the site's current authorised channel. Confirm document requirements and the dated amount; no passport purchase or concession was tested.
Time
1–2 hours is an editorial allowance for the admitted heritage area, without promising access onto a tidal beach.

Getting there
Put 宋井 and 青澳湾 into one agreed southern-coast return itinerary from Houzhai. Do not accept a one-way drop at an isolated shore stop without a return arrangement.
How to visit
Read the site's account of the wells and Song-era refuge story, then look at the coastal setting from the admitted route. The well is a heritage feature, not a source of drinking water in this plan. If the gate is closed or the sea approaches are restricted, omit the paid stop and retain lunch and Qing'ao only if conditions remain suitable.
4. Shen'ao's Zongbing Mansion — an alternative · 深澳镇 · 总兵府
Zongbing Mansion gives the island another subject besides leisure: its role in coastal administration and sea defence. The headquarters setting in Shen'ao and the admitted displays suit someone who wants a focused history visit rather than another beach or viewpoint.
Choose it deliberately. It lies on a different side of the island from the Song Well–Qing'ao pairing, and the road time belongs in the decision. A sheltered display may be useful in ordinary rain if the roads and venue are open, but it is not a reason to travel during a storm or bridge warning.

Use the current ticket desk's opening and last-admission information; the guide does not carry forward an old timetable.

Select 南澳总兵府 in 深澳镇, not a similarly named mainland attraction. Confirm the actual admission, open displays and original-document requirements before travelling.
Time
1½–2 hours on site is a planning allowance for a modest history visit.

Getting there
Arrange a distinct outward and return road trip from Houzhai, or ask the operating island-bus service for its exact served stop. This northern-side visit is not on the proposed Song Well–Qing'ao day.
How to visit
Choose it if sea-defence history matters more than the Song Well stop. Look at the headquarters setting and admitted historical displays, then return by the agreed vehicle. Replace another outing or add a day; do not turn the short stay into a race to complete an island circuit.
Houzhai for convenience, Qing'ao for repeated beach time
Houzhai: the default for the two-night plan without driving. Pick an actual town address with restaurants nearby, a reachable host or reception and an uncomplicated road pickup. Ask which Nan'ao-bound bus stop is currently useful for the property and whether the last leg involves stairs or a taxi.
Qing'ao Bay: better when the beach is the purpose of the stay and you want to visit it several times. It adds the onward island transfer after crossing the bridge and a longer departure chain. Check the actual walking route to the sand, food choices and the confirmed early return vehicle; “sea view” does not mean beachfront access.
Shantou mainland: choose this if the weather is unstable, you have only a short stop or an inflexible departure. It removes an island hotel move but turns any Nanao visit into a longer return outing. For the overnight island plan, keep a separate final mainland night before a critical connection.
Open Nan'ao County hotel listings, enter one room, two adults and two island nights, and inspect Houzhai 后宅 or Qing'ao Bay 青澳湾 on the map. This is the Guangdong island, not Shenzhen's Nanao area or Taiwan's Nan'ao. Confirm the Chinese address, passport check-in, reception/contact arrangements, cancellation terms and the complete road pickup with the property before paying. No named hotel, room availability or rate is recommended as checked here.
Order a meal, not an unpriced seafood display
Stay close to the day's base for dinner. In Houzhai, a rice or noodle meal with a cooked seafood dish lets you eat without another coastal transfer. On the Qing'ao outing, pause for lunch in the bay or Yun'ao area, then keep time for the return. Seaweed 紫菜 is part of the island's real food economy; ask for a seaweed dish or soup if offered, and confirm the broth and other ingredients.
For two adults, start with one modest seafood dish, a vegetable and rice or noodles. For a fish or shellfish sold by weight, establish the species, weight unit, total weight, cooking fee and final charge before preparation. A waterfront display price may not represent the whole dish. If the total is unclear, choose a priced menu dish instead.
Do not assume a plain-looking soup, rice or tofu dish is shellfish-free or vegetarian. Give dietary restrictions to the kitchen and ask about sauces and stock. Dried seaweed or seafood can be a useful souvenir when its product, weight and price are clear; a shop purchase is optional. No restaurant bill, menu price or harvest activity was field-tested or booked.
Two island nights, then return to the mainland
Arrival afternoon · island night 1: cross from Shantou by an operating bus or booked licensed vehicle and settle in Houzhai. Walk a short open waterfront section and eat near the room. Agree tomorrow's vehicle request: hotel → 宋井 → 青澳湾自然之门 → hotel, including waiting, pickup points and the final price. Resolve the weather and opening conditions before committing.
Full island day · island night 2: visit Song Well if its access is confirmed, then continue toward Qing'ao for lunch, a shore walk, Nature's Gate and time to sit. Return to Houzhai before the outing becomes a last-service race. If a slower beach day matters more, omit Song Well and spend longer in the bay. Keep the same island room for the second night.
Return day · mainland buffer night: check out after breakfast and leave the island in daylight with time for traffic and bus waiting. Continue to your Shantou hotel, eat and spend the night on the mainland. The important train or flight belongs the following day; Shantou station and the airport are separate destinations with their own transfers.
Changes of emphasis: a Qing'ao base makes the bay the centre of both mornings, with a separately booked mainland return. Choose Zongbing Mansion instead of Song Well for a history-led alternative and change the driver request accordingly. Add a further full day and island night only when another area is a real priority. With no island night, choose a single coast area and a confirmed daylight return rather than claiming the whole island as a day trip.
Cross by bus; keep the island outing and return explicit
For rail, search Shantou 汕头 on 12306. Do not substitute Shantou South 汕头南 or Chaoshan 潮汕 because the English names look related. The transport authority lists 161A and 161K from 汕头站 for access to the island. At the signed bus area, choose the operating Nan'ao-bound service and confirm your served Houzhai stop with the driver before boarding; retain the hotel's full address for the final leg.
The authority's 161K adjustment publishes 07:00–18:40 departures in both directions, a 2024 operating reference rather than a guaranteed last bus for your date. Use the named 汕头公交, 车来了 or 粤省事 app/mini-program channels for current departures, or ask the station staff. The published transport contact is +86 754 88278671. Do not plan on a late train arrival making the last bus.
Official material lists island buses 601, 602 and 601K, but does not establish a current unlimited circular service, frequency or every stop for this stay. The default full-day plan therefore uses a licensed driver arranged in advance for the two named stops and return. For a bus-based substitute, get the actual direction and stop for 青澳湾 and the last useful service back to 后宅 before boarding; if those are unresolved, keep a simpler outing or use the quoted return vehicle.
If a ticket or app cannot process your payment, ask the driver or staffed terminal for the accepted method before the journey; carry a way to pay for an alternative licensed transfer. Hotel pickup means a vehicle with an agreed driver, plate, contact, route and total price, not a visitor driving a rental scooter. For any cross-bridge private transfer, ask whether tolls and the operator's current entry arrangements are included in the quote. The bridge rules prohibit pedestrians, bicycles and motorcycles on the bridge: walking out is not a missed-bus fallback.
On departure, confirm island hotel → served mainland-bound bus stop or booked car → Shantou hotel. If the bus is full or cancelled while the bridge remains open, return to a staffed stop or the hotel and arrange a licensed vehicle rather than waiting at an isolated turnout. Do not assume an improvised boat will replace a restricted bridge crossing.
When the sea or bridge changes the plan
The municipal bridge rules allow weather-related controls and full closure; bus restrictions can begin before all vehicle traffic stops. A normal bridge operating period is not proof that tomorrow's crossing will run. Check 南澳大桥官微, the bridge authority's named official WeChat account, before crossing and again before the return. The published bridge service number is +86 754 89806286.
Before arrival: if warnings, a suspended bus or official controls put the crossing in doubt, stay in Shantou, contact the island property about its cancellation or change process and move the island visit. Do not cross simply because an old timetable or room booking exists.
Already on the island: stop coastal sightseeing, follow the authorities and hotel staff, and remain in safe accommodation if instructed. Contact the mainland hotel and the original rail or airline booking channel to change affected arrangements. Extend the island room or use accommodation directed locally if a crossing is unavailable; there is no guaranteed same-day workaround.
At the shore: stay behind barriers and away from surf-exposed rocks or closed approaches. A historical photograph, a description of a gently shelving beach or sunny weather inland is not permission to enter the water. The core itinerary is usable as a land-based visit in suitable conditions; in severe conditions it should be postponed, not converted into a full coast drive.
A budget that includes the mainland buffer
For two adults sharing one room, two island nights and one full island day, calculate 2R + A + B + T + M + X. R is the nightly island-room quote, A the pair's actual paid-site admissions, B the cross-bridge bus fares and any short stop-to-hotel connections for both people, T the agreed island sightseeing vehicle, M meals and X drinks or contingency. No current bus, Song Well or room price is asserted here.
Illustrative inputs R = ¥300, A = ¥40, B = ¥80, T = ¥400, M = ¥360 and X = ¥100 produce ¥600 + ¥40 + ¥80 + ¥400 + ¥360 + ¥100 = ¥1,580 for the pair. These are planning inputs, not checked quotations or a promotional package. Replace them with the chosen room, admission and written transport prices; omitting a paid stop removes its actual price, not an invented zero-cost visit.
Add a mainland room quote Rₘ and the pair's buffer-night meals. Example Rₘ = ¥300 plus ¥120 meals gives ¥2,000 for the pair including three trip nights: two on Nanao and one in Shantou. The third night is a connection buffer, not a second full island sightseeing day.
Exclude intercity trains or flights, airport transfers, shopping, guiding, water activities and extra island nights. A Qing'ao base or a private cross-bridge transfer changes the road total; ask for any bridge charge to be included before accepting the quote. Keep a separate reserve if weather may require more accommodation or changed onward tickets.
Sources and the limits of the check
Sources actually read on 22 October 2026. The transport authority's 2025 guide supports the station connections and named bus lines; its 2024 notice supplies the 161K operating reference and live-information channels. The 2025 bridge rules support weather controls, prohibited bridge users and the official contact. None is a same-day service or weather forecast.
The ministry's Qing'ao material describes the bay and Nature's Gate, not current bathing permission or water quality. Official local reporting supports the heritage accounts and fishing/seaweed context. Stories associated with Song Well are identified as tradition. No current ordinary-adult paid-site tariff was verified, so the budget retains explicit admission and transport inputs.
Route choices, visit lengths, base comparisons and unquoted costs are editorial planning judgments. No bus, local driver, foreign-passport purchase, hotel check-in, restaurant, water activity or current shore access was field-tested. This is Nanao Island in Shantou; sources about Shenzhen's similarly named Nanao or Taiwan's Nan'ao are not used for its operations.
