Dali: Old Town, Erhai and Cangshan
Stay near the Old Town, start with its lanes and Three Pagodas, and give Erhai’s west shore a separate unhurried outing. Add Cangshan for a mountain day or Xizhou for Bai homes and village food. Shuanglang works best as a deliberate lake stay, with time for its longer road journeys.
- Allow
- Two full days / three nights; add a full day for Cangshan or Xizhou.
- Sleep
- Old Town lane or edge for a mixed trip; Xizhou for village life; Shuanglang for a lake room.
- Arrange
- Exact hotel pickup, cableway and return. The station is in Xiaguan, south of the Old Town.

Know which Dali you mean
Dali Old Town · 大理古城 is the visitor base below Cangshan on the west side of the lake. Xiaguan · 下关 is the modern southern city around the station and the lake’s southern end. A hotel labelled Dali City can be in either place, or much farther around Erhai.
- West of the Old Town
- Cangshan’s separate cable-car approaches; a mountain ticket selects a station, rather than one interchangeable mountain gate.
- East of the Old Town
- Caicun · 才村 and Longkan · 龙龛 reach the west-shore ecological corridor. Road vehicles stop outside its walking and cycling space.
- North along the western plain
- Xizhou has its own old streets, homes and fields. A courtyard stay here sacrifices Old Town evenings for village time.
- Northeast across the lake
- Shuanglang faces the mountains from the opposite shore. It is a different base, requiring longer drives to Old Town sights.
- South
- Xiaguan, Dali station · 大理站 and the south lakefront; Dali Fengyi Airport · 大理凤仪机场 is southeast of the lake.
The useful choice is between Old Town access, a west-side village, an east-side lake room and southern transport convenience. Moving hotels makes sense when the second location is part of the trip itself; two full days usually work better from one base.
Two or three days that work
These are combinations, with editorial time allowances. Arrival, hotel access and the onward train or flight each need their own space.
- Old Town → Three Pagodas → Old Town dinner: allow 6–8 hours including lunch, transfers and 2–3 hours inside the temple complex. They share the western base; give the towers an early or middle-day slot rather than arriving near the gate’s closing time.
- Caicun or Longkan → one west-shore segment → the same pickup: allow 4–5 hours from the Old Town hotel. Walk, or ride a manageable bicycle loop and return the bicycle before the car pickup. This gives the lake a real block without a 360-degree road circuit.
- Cangshan round trip → a quiet Old Town evening: reserve the main daylight block, roughly 5–7 hours door to door for Ximatan or 4–6 for Gantong. Queues and weather can extend it. Keep the onward departure on another day.
- Xizhou streets → courtyard visit or village lunch → Old Town: allow 6–8 hours with both drives. Choose this instead of Cangshan for architecture, food or a cloudy mountain day. Staying in Xizhou turns the return drive into a village evening.
With two full days: use the Old Town/Three Pagodas combination and the short west shore. If the mountain is your main reason for Dali, give it the second day’s main daylight block and remove the full lake outing. A brief shore visit is optional only if the actual descent and return leave daylight and energy. With three: add either the mountain or Xizhou. Doing both means cutting the lake to a short visit or adding another full day.
Choose Shuanglang deliberately. From the Old Town, it consumes a separate outing with a substantial return. For a slow lake trip, two Old Town nights followed by two Shuanglang nights leave a full day in each base and a transfer day; that is four nights, rather than a two-day plan.
Book the few things that matter
Book the room and onward seat before adding distant outings. For Cangshan, choose the exact cableway, full or middle segment, return ticket, included park admission and any hotel transfer. The named Ximatan and Gantong seller offers require ticket exchange and a 30–45-minute delay after payment; an online purchase made while joining the queue may not be usable immediately.
The operator’s archived November 2025 instruction describes Chinese identity-card collection and entry; the reopened seller listings still do not establish an ordinary foreign-passport transaction. For a foreign passport, resolve the document field, paper-ticket collection and children’s eligibility with the chosen seller or the operator on 400-900-1558 before paying. Keep the original passports with the family; a hotel’s welcome policy and a scenic ticket’s identity process are separate decisions.
If flying into Dali: the 4 September 2026–3 September 2027 tourism programme offers qualifying travellers a 15% discount on Three Pagodas and the named Cangshan cableways within its three-day document window. Flight evidence and valid identity documents are required; confirm passport eligibility and the specific discounted product at the visitor centre before payment. Ordinary rail arrivals do not inherit this offer.
Choose a base and an actual room
Default to an Old Town lane with a clear car-access point. Restaurants and evening walks are close, and both the mountain and west-shore trips start on the useful side of Erhai. An edge room can simplify bags and pickup; an inner-lane room trades that convenience for the town outside the door. Ask the property for its Chinese address and the exact vehicle meeting point.
The following are real, separately bookable options, chosen for their locations and bed configurations. Rates depend on dates; use the linked room selector with every adult and child entered. The three Trip.com listings publish an all-country/region welcome policy. Send your arrival time and passport type to the selected property, and ask it to confirm the exact room and registration arrangements.
Old Town: Xiangwang Family Inn · 巷往亲子民宿小院(大理古城店)
No. 12 Yuer Lane. Use the property’s full Chinese name for the map pin and ask it for the Chinese address and car-access point. Choose the Deluxe Queen Room for a couple, or the Deluxe Family Friendly Room (Slide) with one single and one queen bed for a family who fits that layout. The family room’s window faces the hallway; a larger name alone promises little about daylight. The Trip.com room and policy page lists all-age children, free existing-bed stays for ages 0–17 and no added crib or extra bed. Select the actual occupancy and room; keep bags light for the final lane approach. Choose dates and the exact Old Town room →
Xizhou: Linden Centre, Yang’s House · 喜林苑·杨品相宅
Choose it for a historic courtyard and mornings in Xizhou, accepting a road trip to the Old Town and a separate ride to the lake. The Chinese-style Courtyard Double Room has one king bed; the Family Friendly Connecting Room – 2-Bedroom has two singles and one king. The platform listing gives all-age children, existing-bed stays free at ages 0–5, cribs available and extra beds depending on room. It also requests contact one day before arrival and lists a 22:30 end to check-in. Use the hotel’s own enquiry site for the exact Yang’s House, late arrival and transfer, or select the named room on Trip.com →
Shuanglang: Dali Shuanglang Lake View Inn · 大理双廊海村海景客栈
Choose a lake room when time on the eastern waterfront is the point of your stay. The Xianyi Comfortable Sea-View Boutique Twin-Bed Room has two singles; the Yijing Cozy 180° Full Sea-View Family Suite lists two singles and one king, on the second floor and with smoking permitted. The property page gives all-age children, ages 0–17 free using existing beds and no cribs or extra beds. Request a smoke-free arrangement if essential and agree the parking-to-door bag transfer. Leave a generous drive for a southern station or airport departure. Choose a Shuanglang room and dated policy →
South lake / Xiaguan: Hotel Indigo Dali Erhai · 大理洱海英迪格酒店
No. 15 Binhai Avenue · 滨海大道15号. This is a southern urban lake base beside Erhai Park, useful for a shorter transfer to the station or airport. Old Town sightseeing still requires a separate drive. IHG lists Standard Rooms with one king or two double beds; choose the actual bed and lake-view category in the operator’s room selector. Rollaways and a paid crib are request-only. IHG’s room page supplies no specific foreign-passport workflow; the hotel can settle passport registration, family capacity and extra-bed charges at +86 872 2222222 or rsvn@indigodali.com. Book with IHG →
Caicun and Longkan suit a west-shore stay when dawn walks and the corridor matter more than the town at night. Choose the exact village and pickup outside the corridor, rather than a generic Erhai-view label. For two days with several paid sights, the Old Town is the simpler base; for three or more, a village room can justify its own slower day.
Arrive at your bed
Kunming → Dali station · 大理站
Use China Railway’s 12306 to search Kunming · 昆明 and Kunming South · 昆明南 separately for the travel date, arriving at Dali · 大理. Compare the departure station as well as the train time: a fast train from a farther station may lose its advantage on the first road leg. Buy the train and fare shown for your travel date. Choose a Kunming base and arrival plan before the rail transfer →
12306’s English service accepts valid foreign passports. Enter the matching name and document, complete the required passenger verification, and carry the same original document through station entry and boarding. If the online identity process stalls, use the railway ticket counter with the passport and allow time before the desired train; availability remains tied to the actual train.
Dali station → Old Town hotel
The tourism transport operator’s 27 January 2025 guide describes a CNY 5 Old Town express, about 40 minutes to 环洱海服务中心, with departures following arriving trains. After exiting the ticket gates, turn left to the operator’s enquiry point; the described bus approach goes through the commercial/food area and over the footbridge. Buy the service operating when you arrive. Its destination is a transport centre, rather than your guesthouse door.
From that drop-off, take the last taxi leg to the hotel’s agreed car-access point or meet its pickup. For a family with bags, a taxi from the station’s signed queue or a hotel-arranged driver can go directly to that point. Allow roughly 45–75 minutes from station to an Old Town bed as a planning estimate, longer in holiday traffic; obtain the taxi meter or agreed transfer quote rather than relying on a fixed fare.
Dali Fengyi Airport → your chosen base
The 17 June 2026 airport notice reproduced from Dali Airport’s account lists a CNY 25 airport bus: airport → Dali station → Old Town Fenghuaxueyue Hotel · 风花雪月大酒店. Departures from the airport follow flight arrivals. Save that hotel stop’s name; it is distinct from the station express endpoint. A taxi or hotel pickup covers the remaining lane.
A taxi or prearranged hotel driver is simpler for Xizhou, Shuanglang or a late arrival. Give the driver the property’s Chinese address and meeting instructions, especially where a waterfront lane excludes cars. Planning allowances from the airport to the bed are about an hour or more for the Old Town and roughly 1½–2 hours for Xizhou or Shuanglang; these are road-and-bag estimates, with traffic and the exact property deciding the result. A south-lake room shortens the southern transfer but increases the daily drive to Old Town sights.
The eight places in detail
1. Dali Old Town · 大理古城
Begin here for the pattern of Dali life: courtyard lanes below the mountain, local breakfasts and an evening meal. Fuxing Road is the main orientation line; smaller lanes give relief from its shops. This is also the most convenient base for a mixed first visit.
- Hours and last entry
- Public streets have no single admission window. Come by day for the town plan and again in the evening for food; shops, exhibitions and tower access keep their own hours.
- Tickets and booking
- No general street-entry ticket. Paid tower climbs, exhibitions and transport tours are separate choices; a tour-bus product is not compulsory town admission.
- Time
- Half a day across several walks
- Address
- 大理古城南门 · 云南省大理市大理镇复兴路南端. Start at the south gate, then follow 复兴路 into the town; the government walk also identifies 红龙井 and the old lanes.
- Getting there
- Walk from an Old Town hotel. From Xiaguan, use the station express or a taxi to the hotel or a car-accessible gate. Agree the vehicle meeting point outside the pedestrian lanes.
- Visit route
- South gate → Fuxing Road → a short lane loop toward Renmin Road → a meal or your hotel. Add #6 during its open hours for history indoors. Finish near your original gate or the hotel pickup instead of carrying bags through the lanes.
2. Three Pagodas & Chongsheng Temple · 崇圣寺三塔
The ancient towers are Dali’s clearest historical landmark. The larger rebuilt temple behind them adds courtyards and a rising central axis against Cangshan. Give the towers and the temple time; a roadside silhouette does not deliver the same visit.

- Hours and last entry
- The September 2026 tourism notice publishes 07:30–18:30. An older operator guide gives a shorter window; use an early or middle-day slot and call the visitor centre 0872-2666158 for the visit-date last admission.
- Tickets and booking
- Qunar’s Ctrip-supplied admission offers give a reference budget of CNY 73–75 for the selected adult tickets, with different use delays. Use the chosen product’s price and conditions for your date. Choose admission alone or a named shuttle bundle; confirm the passport field and any ticket exchange before paying. See the flight-discount conditions.
- Time
- 2–3 h inside, plus both road legs
- Address
- 崇圣寺三塔文化旅游区游客中心 / 主检票口 · 云南省大理市大理镇三塔路与文笔路交叉口西南侧. Select the visitor entrance, not a reflection-park or roadside photo pin. Published attraction location →
- Getting there
- Take a taxi or booked scenic transfer from the Old Town to the main entrance. Arrange the same visitor-exit pickup for the return; use an on-site shuttle only if its current route reduces the temple climb you wish to avoid.
- Visit route
- Visitor entrance → towers and reflection view along the open visitor route → central temple axis → signed exit → Old Town. Walking rises into the temple complex; shorten the uphill section before cutting the return buffer.
3. Erhai west shore · 洱海海西生态廊道
Choose one shore segment for open water, reeds and views toward the villages and mountain. Caicun is an easy short outing; Longkan suits an early shore walk. They are alternative starts to one lake experience, not separate attractions to collect.
- Hours and last entry
- Use daylight for the walk or ride. Sunrise requires a prearranged early pickup and a warm layer. Rental desks and authorised sightseeing vehicles have their own return deadlines.
- Tickets and booking
- Ordinary open-shore walking has no separate admission. Pay separately for bicycles, authorised sightseeing vehicles or parking. Agree permitted route, deposit, account/payment method and bicycle return point; if rental access fails, walk the same segment.
- Time
- 4–5 h from an Old Town hotel
- Address
- 才村生态廊道入口 or 龙龛生态廊道入口 · 云南省大理市大理镇洱海西岸. Both named entrances appear in the city corridor notice; save one exact village entrance for both car journeys.
- Getting there
- Take a taxi or hotel car from the Old Town to the chosen road-side village entrance, then walk to the water. Leave road scooters outside; use a permitted bicycle or authorised service within the corridor according to current signs.
- Visit route
- Village entrance → shore → walk out for 45–60 minutes and retrace, or ride an agreed short loop → return the bicycle → same road pickup. The linked 2025 enforcement campaign is historical context, not a current blanket timetable or a promise that any electric vehicle is allowed.
4. Cangshan · 苍山
Choose Ximatan for the high alpine landscape, or Gantong for a lower forest-and-stream outing. The two lower stations and tickets are different. A full, middle or lower route changes what you see; none should be added casually after a full lake day.
- Hours and last entry
- The September notice lists ordinary/low-season sales at 08:30–15:00 for Ximatan and 08:30–16:00 for Gantong. Older Gantong information lists an earlier ascent cutoff. Before booking, obtain today’s open segment, ascent cutoff and last-down time from 400-900-1558 or the chosen station.
- Tickets and booking
- Reference Ctrip-supplied Qunar offers are CNY 318 full Ximatan return or CNY 190 middle return, and CNY 127 Gantong return, each described with park admission. They require exchange and delayed use. Choose the exact segment, return and passport process; the lower route does not reach Ximatan.
- Time
- Ximatan 5–7 h; Gantong 4–6 h door to door
- Address
- 洗马潭索道下站(天龙八部影视城西侧)· 云南省大理市大理镇苍山东麓;感通索道下站 · 大理古城七里桥观音塘以西约3公里,感通寺旁. The Ximatan operator specification and Gantong location identify these separate approaches.
- Getting there
- Book the car to the lower station printed on your ticket and arrange the return from that same station. A film-city pickup is for Ximatan; it is not Gantong. Protect a principal daylight block and keep the onward train or flight on another day.
- Visit route
- Chosen lower station → issued cableway segment → open boardwalk or stream path within the last-down limit → return on the same cableway → agreed car pickup. Use the route comparison below. If the upper line closes, decide whether the lower experience is worth your time before accepting a replacement product.
Ximatan is the high landscape; Gantong is the lower forest-and-stream choice. Zhonghe is a third, separate approach near the Old Town. A generic Cangshan ticket or a driver’s mountain pin can send you to the wrong base station.
Ximatan full return · 洗马潭索道全程往返
Choose this when the high alpine scenery is the priority and the upper line is operating. The lower station is by 天龙八部影视城(洗马潭索道下站 / 白鹤溪站), west of the Old Town; the route passes 七龙女池 to the high 洗马潭 station. The operator’s December 2025 station specification places the upper cableway station at 3,885 metres. That station height is distinct from the pool and boardwalk heights.
The Ctrip-supplied Qunar product gives a reference price of CNY 318 for adult full return with Cangshan park admission; this offer requires paper-ticket exchange and becomes usable 45 minutes after purchase. A CNY 190 middle-segment return with park admission was also listed, usable after 30 minutes. It reaches Qilongnvchi, rather than the high Ximatan landscape. Compare the exact inclusion and identity fields before buying; a transfer bundle is a different offer.
Visit: lower station → cableway middle/upper stations as issued → open high boardwalk → return via the same cableway → lower-station pickup. Allocate the whole principal daylight block and choose the downhill cutoff at the ticket desk before boarding. Published sales or admission windows are not a safe last-descent time. Obtain the day’s last-down instruction before leaving the upper station.
The operator-attributed 8 April 2026 notice says wind and lightning can slow the cableway or switch it to the Qilongnvchi line. If only that line operates, buy it for its own forest-and-pool experience or move the mountain visit to another available day. A misty ascent can deliver little lake view even while the cableway runs.
Gantong return · 感通索道往返
Choose this for a lower outing with Qingbi Stream · 清碧溪 and views, accepting that it delivers a different landscape from Ximatan. Use 感通索道下站, beside the Gantong Temple approach; the operator locates it west of Guanyintang / Qiliqiao, south of the Ximatan base. A taxi to the film city leaves you at the other cableway.
The city’s 25 July 2025 fare approval sets the cableway at CNY 100 return or CNY 65 one way, executable after a month’s public notice. This is the cableway fare. A Ctrip-supplied return offer with park admission has a reference price of CNY 127, requiring ticket exchange and a 30-minute wait. Compare the final package’s park admission and cableway inclusions before payment.
Visit: Gantong lower station → upper station → the open Qingbi Stream route and a manageable signed trail segment → same upper station → Gantong lower station → driver pickup. Allow 4–6 hours including both road legs and queues. The September tourism notice gives 08:30–16:00 for ordinary/low-season ticket sales, while the older operator page ends ascent at 14:00 and descent at 17:00. Book a morning ascent and get the station’s actual last-down instruction before walking; do not treat the later sales window as permission to ascend.
Zhonghe and longer walks
Zhonghe · 中和索道 is useful only if its own open service and the trail you want suit your visit. It is a separate Old Town-side access, rather than a replacement ticket valid at Gantong. The government’s 2021 mountain account describes the historical Yudai path connecting approaches; that account does not establish a currently open through-walk. For a first visit, return on the same cableway. A through-hike needs today’s open trail, the second cableway’s operating time, appropriate footwear and an arranged pickup at that different lower station.
Bring a windproof warm layer, water, food, sun protection and shoes that grip wet steps. Take the high route slowly; the cable-car ascent leaves little acclimatisation time. If you feel unwell, stop the walk and seek staff assistance for descent. Children or anyone for whom high altitude is a concern can choose the lake or lower-town day instead.
5. Xizhou · 喜洲
Choose Xizhou for decorated Bai houses, market streets, surrounding fields and a freshly baked baba lunch. It rewards a village-scale walk more than another lakefront photo stop. A courtyard stay adds quiet morning and evening time.
- Hours and last entry
- Walk the public town in daylight, with food shops around breakfast and lunch as useful anchors. A specific courtyard, workshop or hosted visit follows its own opening or booking time.
- Tickets and booking
- No general public-lane admission. Pay separately for an open house, tea performance or workshop. Linden Centre can confirm a hosted cultural activity; a hotel booking and visitor activity are different products.
- Time
- 6–8 h with both drives; longer for a stay
- Address
- 喜洲古镇四方街 · 云南省大理市喜洲镇. Use 四方街 as the walking start; arrange a car-accessible pickup on the edge of the old streets. The local operator’s baba account identifies the square’s food shops.
- Getting there
- Allow roughly 45–60 minutes each way from the Old Town as an editorial road estimate. A taxi or hotel car with a booked return suits a half-to-full-day outing. Keep a brief west-shore stop optional; continuing to Shuanglang adds another long road leg.
- Visit route
- Sifang Street → smaller residential lanes → one open courtyard or arranged activity → village lunch → same pickup. Ask before entering homes and keep farm paths and doorways clear. For a rainy alternative to Cangshan, choose an actual open indoor activity rather than assuming the whole town is covered.
6. Dali City Museum · 大理市博物馆
Choose this focused indoor stop to add historical context to the Old Town lanes. It fits naturally into #1 and is useful in rain. It is the city museum inside the Old Town, not a different Dali museum in southern Xiaguan.
- Hours and last entry
- City visitor guide: Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:30; Monday closed except statutory-holiday adjustments. Contact 0872-2670196 for exceptional openings.
- Tickets and booking
- Collect the free same-day ticket at the entrance with a valid identity document; organised groups reserve in advance. The official guide does not spell out passport handling. Bring the original passport to the desk; if entry cannot be resolved, keep the Old Town walk and an indoor meal.
- Time
- 60–90 min
- Address
- 大理市博物馆 · 云南省大理白族自治州大理市大理古城复兴路111号. The official address places it about 200 m inward from the south gate.
- Getting there
- Walk north along Fuxing Road from the Old Town south gate, or combine it with your central-town walk. A taxi to Xiaguan’s prefecture museum would take you to a different institution.
- Visit route
- Entrance document/ticket desk → open galleries and courtyards → same entrance → continue the Old Town lane walk or lunch. Keep gallery time within the entry window; an official Monday exception applies only when the holiday arrangement actually covers your date.
7. Shuanglang · 双廊
Choose this side of Erhai for a lake-facing room and time looking west toward Cangshan. An evening by the water is its strongest reason to stay. It is a separate base or full outing, with much longer access to Old Town sights.
- Hours and last entry
- Visit the public lanes in daylight and leave room for dinner when staying. Each private art venue and boat has its own hours. An island sailing must fit its published final return and your road pickup.
- Tickets and booking
- No general admission to the public town. Nanzhao Folk Island, boat trips, private venues and photo platforms sell separate products. Verify current island fare and final ferry at the southern pier before purchasing; walk the waterfront if boats are unavailable.
- Time
- Full outing from Old Town, or overnight
- Address
- 双廊古镇 · 云南省大理市双廊镇双廊村. For a specific southern walking start use 南诏风情岛码头(双廊南侧); the government island account locates access here. Arrange vehicle pickup at the nearest agreed road-access point.
- Getting there
- From the Old Town, allow roughly 1½–2 h each way as a planning estimate and book a return car; allow 3–4 h for lanes, waterfront and lunch. A lake-view room here makes more sense when the stay itself is the attraction.
- Visit route
- Agreed car-access point → public waterfront and lanes → lunch and lake time → retrace to the pickup. Add a separately booked boat-and-island visit only when its sailing and final return fit the road pickup. For an overnight, agree parking-to-door bag help.
8. Longweiguan · 龙尾关
Choose Longweiguan for the older southern city: lanes, courtyard houses and everyday trade beside the Xi’er River. It is useful from a southern hotel or as a deliberate Xiaguan stop, rather than another drive from a short Old Town stay.
- Hours and last entry
- Walk in daylight; shops, heritage interiors and community buildings follow separate hours. This plan uses open public streets and does not assume access inside any protected building.
- Tickets and booking
- No general ticket for this public-street walk. Food and any separately offered indoor activity are paid individually. Keep the street outing if a named interior is closed.
- Time
- 1–2 h, plus transfer
- Address
- 龙尾关历史文化街区 · 云南省大理市下关镇关迤社区龙尾街一带,西洱河畔. The officially published local account identifies 龙尾街 and 关迤社区; use the historical-quarter pin for arrival.
- Getting there
- Take a taxi from a Xiaguan/south-lake hotel and return to the same agreed pickup. From the Old Town this is a separate southern road trip. Before a train, leave luggage at the hotel and set a firm station departure time.
- Visit route
- Historical-quarter entrance → open Longwei Street lanes and courtyard exteriors → a local breakfast or snack → same pickup. A south-lake stay can add Erhai Park separately; cut that extra walk if it erodes the train buffer.
Eat in Dali
Use a small breakfast, a village lunch and one shared Bai-style meal to try different foods. Choose a visible menu and price before ordering; lakefront scenery can be the expensive part of the bill.
- Rushan · 乳扇: a thin dairy sheet served grilled or fried; sweet grilled versions can include rose preserve. The government food account identifies it as a local speciality. Ask for 烤乳扇 if you want it grilled. It contains milk.
- Erkuai · 饵块 / ersi · 饵丝: rice made into a cake or strips. Ask for 烤饵块 for a filled grilled snack, or a bowl of 饵丝. A meat sauce or broth makes a rice dish non-vegetarian; show 不要肉,也不要肉汤 when avoiding both.
- Xizhou baba · 喜洲粑粑: baked, layered bread. At 喜洲四方街, ask for 甜的 (sweet) or 咸的 (savoury); fillings and fat vary. The local operator’s account points to the shops around the square and eating it freshly baked.
- Sour-spicy fish · 酸辣鱼: a shared fish dish, described in the government food account with sour papaya and aromatics. Agree the fish size or priced portion, chilli level and total before the kitchen starts. For less chilli, show 少辣,辣椒另放.
Where to start: the Old Town’s Fuxing/Renmin Road area works for breakfast and an evening meal; Xizhou’s Sifang Street is a specific place to watch baba coming out of the oven. In the south, Hotel Indigo’s operator dining page offers a seated hotel-restaurant option when weather or a family meal favours predictability. Linden Centre’s published dining listing is for property guests; a visitor should arrange an activity or meal with the hotel instead of assuming walk-in access to its courtyard.
Restaurant mushrooms should come from the kitchen, rather than a self-picked lake or mountain find. If a broth, dairy, nut or meat ingredient matters, name the ingredient and ask the kitchen before ordering; a sweet or vegetable-sounding dish can contain animal ingredients. Useful text for a simple request is 请告诉我这道菜有什么配料 — please tell me what ingredients are in this dish.
Move around and leave
Within the Old Town, walk. For the mountain lower station, west-shore village, Xizhou and Shuanglang, use a taxi, a hotel-arranged driver or the actual dated scenic-bus product. Show the Chinese destination and entrance. Agree the return pickup, waiting time, child seat needs and full quote for a booked car; a one-way drop at a mountain or village does little for the second half of the day.
For the corridor, a short permitted bicycle ride works better than a scooter route planned from a generic lake-loop map. On the road, cycling shares space with traffic; take a car between widely separated bases and use the protected lakeside section for the ride. An operator bus pass can be useful when its dated stops match your chosen outings; price, last return and reserved-seat terms belong to that pass.
Old Town → Dali station
Save the departure as 大理站, rather than Dali Old Town. Arrange the hotel pickup the evening before and carry the original rail document. For an Old Town hotel, leave roughly 1½–2 hours before the train as an editorial allowance for the 45–75-minute road/bag leg and station entry; use more in holiday traffic or with unresolved passport verification. From Xizhou or Shuanglang, add the longer drive and avoid a same-morning mountain or long lake activity. If Lijiang is next, choose a Dayan or Shuhe base and mountain date before buying the onward ticket.
Old Town → Dali Fengyi Airport
The June 2026 airport notice lists departures from 风花雪月大酒店 → 大理港 → 大理机场 at 07:00, 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00, CNY 25 and about 90 minutes on the route. Reach the hotel bus stop before the departure and add airline check-in time. This is a dated provider schedule; 4009001558 resolves the operating departure. For a flight whose airport deadline falls before the first bus can get there, book a taxi or hotel driver.
Use the flight’s actual check-in deadline and a conservative road allowance to choose the pickup. As a practical planning target, leave an Old Town room about 3–3½ hours before a domestic flight, longer from the northern or opposite-shore bases and during heavy traffic. An international connection through another airport needs its own transfer allowance. A sightseeing car, cableway or cruise is a separate booking from the flight; give the final morning to departure when reliability matters.
If a transfer breaks: move to the signed taxi queue or contact the hotel’s arranged driver; save the address and phone offline. If you miss a train, take the passport and order to the railway counter or use the selling channel’s change options. Rail changes depend on the applicable rule and available seats; plan an extra southern night if the usable onward service has gone.
Weather and usable alternatives
The government’s lake account favours spring and autumn and describes summer’s rain. Treat season as a preference, then choose the mountain on the clearest suitable day available. Sunshine at the lake says little about high-station wind or lightning.
- Upper Cangshan line closes: take the offered Qilongnvchi product only if that lower experience interests you; otherwise use Xizhou or the Old Town museum and move the high visit. A closed Ximatan line does not establish that Gantong runs safely.
- Rain or poor mountain visibility: use the Old Town museum in its open window, a café and a meal, or a hosted courtyard visit. Keep a lake walk short on wet paths; wait indoors during lightning rather than treating the lake as an all-weather substitute.
- Lake wind, bicycle account or boat failure: walk a short sheltered village segment when conditions allow, return the rental before leaving, and use the same road pickup. Skip the island while retaining the Shuanglang waterfront and meal.
- Identity field or child ticket fails: contact the attraction’s ticket office before the road trip; use the original passports and exact product name. A public town walk or lakefront meal keeps the day useful while a paid visit is resolved.
- Holiday congestion: reduce one distant outing, keep the car-access point precise and protect the departure buffer. A shorter stay should remove Shuanglang or a second mountain route before shrinking every return.
