Beijing travel guide: sights, days and the Great Wall

Beijing is China's capital, with imperial halls, hutong lanes and vast parks. Allow three full sightseeing days for the imperial core, a Great Wall day, and the Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace; with less time, choose only one of those last two.

These tiers are a first-visit starting point, not a ranking of cultural worth: families may put #19 or #20 first, while art lovers may choose #12. The old city is not one compact attraction. The imperial core holds #1, #2, #6, #7 and #13; #3 and #8 are to its south, while #9, #10, #14 and #15 are northern old-city choices. #4, #16 and #17 take you northwest. #20 is east in Tongzhou; #5 is a separate Wall outing. Combine the sights by time and location, then choose a base and arrival route.

Selected orientation: 16 of the 20 sights. Numbers match the complete priority list above. The named groups below are planning choices, not a direct-transport promise or a sequence to visit in one day. Maps state the sights covered by each extent.

How long, and what goes together

Allow about three full sightseeing days for the five mixed first-visit priorities: a central Palace block, the Temple and Summer Palace as separate major blocks, and a Wall day with its return. Arrival and departure days do not count as sightseeing days. Add time for optional groups that matter to you, and count Universal as its own full day. We recommend securing the Palace and Wall first, then filling the remaining time with nearby choices.

With exactly three full days, give the imperial core and Badaling one day each. On the remaining long day, use #3 Temple of Heaven's combined-ticket route in the morning, return to Tiantandongmen station, then take Lines 5 → 1 → 4 via Dongdan and Xidan to Xiyuan for a shortened #4 Summer Palace visit from East Palace Gate. Drop #8 Qianmen, #16 Yuanmingyuan and a full lake circuit. Four full days let the southern-axis and northwest combinations stand alone. Beijing subway guide

Four main combinations

Imperial core — #1 Square → #2 Palace → #6 Jingshan; add #13 Beihai only with spare time.

Plan
Allow a full day. The Palace's north exit leads naturally to Jingshan's south gate. The Square and Palace need separate access, and the Palace closes on ordinary Mondays.

Southern axis — #3 Temple of Heaven → #8 Qianmen and Dashilan.

Plan
Allow half a day to a full day. The ritual halls are the main visit; the street walk gives you a flexible meal stop afterwards. Inner monuments close on ordinary Mondays, even when the park remains open.

Northwest gardens — #4 Summer Palace; choose #16 Old Summer Palace or #17 Fragrant Hills as an alternative.

Plan
Allow at least half a day for each selected main outing. Each site is large enough to justify its own purpose. Some Summer Palace interiors close on ordinary Mondays and Fragrant Hills requires a hill walk.

Great Wall — #5 Badaling by default.

Plan
Allow a full day including the outward and return trains. Rail in both directions makes the return easier to plan. Secure both train legs and the scenic ticket before building that day; switch to Mutianyu only with a booked road return.

Add a group that matches your interests

Indoor history — #7 National Museum or #18 Capital Museum → a nearby meal or walk.

Plan
Allow half a day. Choose the national collections for the broader China story or the Capital Museum for Beijing's own history. #7 needs its own timed reservation and normally closes Mondays except national holidays. #18 normally has daytime opening and Monday closure; temporary arrangements can change both. Confirm its current schedule before choosing a Monday or Tuesday. National Museum visitor rules · Capital Museum schedule

Modern or family Beijing — #11 Bird's Nest and Water Cube → #12 798, or choose #19 Zoo / #20 Universal instead.

Plan
Allow a full day for the first pair or Universal, and half a day for a selected zoo loop. The pair puts architecture and art into one east-side outing. Venue hours and gallery closures vary; Universal is a separate full park day.

Many major sights close on Mondays (#2, #3 inner sites, selected #4 inner attractions, #7, #14 and #15); use a Monday for the Great Wall, a street walk or #12 798's open streets. With one day, choose the imperial core (#1 → #2 → #6); give the Great Wall its own day. The four-day Beijing example assembles one trip; the lower-walking example changes the route for a specific mobility need.

Book ahead for Beijing

Book these scarce entries first; build the flexible street and park visits around them.

#2 Palace Museum:

tickets release 20:00, seven days ahead on the official multilingual site; book with the visiting passport and bring the original to Meridian Gate. If sold out, choose #7 National Museum once its separate slot is secured. Museum ticket rules

#1 Tiananmen Square:

reserve 1–7 days ahead on the Square authority's platform using the visiting identity document; admission is free. If no Square slot fits, walk #8 Qianmen. The Palace needs no Square booking; reach Meridian Gate from Tiananmen East station by the Palace's signed approach. 24 Sep 2026 notice

#7 National Museum:

slots release 17:00 daily, up to seven days ahead on the museum's English booking portal; admission is free and the booked original ID goes to the North Gate. If unavailable, choose #18 Capital Museum's general displays. Museum visitor rules

#5 Great Wall day:

secure outward and return train seats on 12306 with the purchasing passport; Badaling scenic entry can also be bought at its staffed gate. If the return train fails, move #5 to another date and use #10 Shichahai's free lake-and-hutong walk that day. For a road alternative, see the Mutianyu return guide. City admission rule

#15 Prince Gong's Mansion:

real-name tickets release 20:00, ten days ahead through the operator's official route; book by passport and collect the credential at the comprehensive service desk. If sold out, choose #10 Shichahai's free lake-and-hutong walk.

Where to stay in Beijing

We recommend Wangfujing or Dongdan for a first visit: Lines 1 and 5 reach the imperial core, the Temple of Heaven and the Lama Temple directly. The trade-off is a busier area and higher room prices. Trip.com's indicative starting averages checked 25 Sep were Regent US$370, Sunworld US$134 and Jinjiang US$75; compare your actual-date total before paying.

Hotels we would pick

Other areas

We recommend the central trio for repeated Palace, southern-axis and old-city days; choose an alternative when its different daily route matters more. The Beijing lodging guide compares these six properties and the booking checks for the actual room.

For a flight-led night: keep the central base for sightseeing, but compare Hilton Beijing Capital Airport for PEK T3 or Fairfield Beijing Daxing Airport for PKX when a late arrival or early flight warrants an airport room. The comparison gives each exact property, official rooms link, terminal pickup and morning return. Confirm the actual room date, original-passport registration and late-arrival hold before paying. New hotel details checked 1 October 2026; existing city scores and prices retain their dates.

Getting to Beijing

Read the airport code or complete railway-station name on the ticket before choosing your hotel transfer. PEK and PKX serve different sides of Beijing.

  • PEK (Capital): Capital Airport Express from Terminals 2/3 to Dongzhimen or Beixinqiao, with a Sanyuanqiao interchange; CNY 25. Capital Airport operator
  • PKX (Daxing): Daxing Airport Express to Caoqiao for Lines 10/19; standard-class CNY 35, about 20 minutes on the train. Rail operator fare · journey time

To the default Wangfujing/Dongdan base: from PEK T2/T3, follow Airport Express signs to the terminal station, ride to Beixinqiao, change to Line 5 toward Songjiazhuang and leave at Dengshikou. From PKX, follow Daxing Airport Express signs to Caoqiao, take Line 10 toward Songjiazhuang, then Line 5 toward Tiantongyuan North to Dengshikou. From Dengshikou, walk to the Regent Beijing or Sunworld Hotel Wangfujing entrance using the saved Chinese hotel name and map pin; the hotel listings above put each about 3–5 minutes from the station. The CNY 25/35 figures are the airport rail leg only, not a door-to-door total. PEK's station authority identifies Beixinqiao's Line 5 interchange and the terminal boarding positions; Caoqiao connects the Daxing line to Line 10. Check the operating timetable for each leg on your landing date before choosing rail. If a last interchange or the final hotel walk fails, use the signed airport taxi rank to the hotel's Chinese address and confirm late check-in with the hotel.

The station printed on your rail ticket controls your arrival; these destination examples help you recognise it:

Rail station to the same hotel base: follow the subway signs after the station exit, then finish at Dengshikou → the saved Regent or Sunworld entrance. From Beijing Station, take Line 2 to Chongwenmen → Line 5; from Beijing West, Line 7 to Ciqikou → Line 5; from Beijing South, Line 14 to Puhuangyu → Line 5. From Beijing North/Xizhimen, take Line 2 to Yonghegong Lama Temple → Line 5; from Qinghe, Line 13 to Lishuiqiao → Line 5. From Beijing Chaoyang, use Line 3 to Dongsi Shitiao → Line 2 to Yonghegong Lama Temple → Line 5; from Beijing Fengtai, Line 10 to Songjiazhuang → Line 5; from Beijing Tongzhou, use the signed Beiyunhe Dong passage → Line 6 to Dongsi → Line 5. These are station-to-base routes, not booked train connections: the exact station on your rail ticket, any line closure, operating hours and the hotel's door pin control the final move. If the last metro connection does not run or luggage makes the transfers unsuitable, use that station's signed taxi rank to the saved Chinese hotel address. Beijing subway planner and service information · station authority directory

The Beijing airports guide covers PEK and PKX arrivals step by step. The departure guide handles the last-day station. For intercity tickets, use the Beijing–Shanghai–Xi'an route guide and foreign-passport train guide.

Connecting at PEK instead of staying in Beijing? For an international arrival followed by a domestic flight, use the entry, baggage and domestic-departure connection guide. For an international-to-international journey staying airside, compare the 105-minute PEK connection case against your own terminals, baggage and ticket protection.

Leaving via a domestic flight that connects to an international flight at PEK? The 95-minute domestic-to-international schedule-change case explains the carrier decision to resolve before relying on that connection; it is not a city-to-airport travel-time allowance.

Getting around Beijing

  • Subway first: Ordinary rides start at CNY 3. Since 13 September 2024, overseas-issued contactless Visa and Mastercard cards have worked at Beijing subway gates; airport express lines have separate fares. City fare guide · foreign-card FAQ

Sights in detail

The imperial core

We recommend #2 Palace Museum as the main imperial-core interior, followed by #6 Jingshan for the view from above. Choose #7 National Museum instead when history through objects matters more than palace rooms, after securing its own timed reservation for a museum-open day. National Museum visitor rules

1. Tiananmen Square · 天安门广场

Tiananmen Square puts you on Beijing’s civic axis, with the Palace rising beyond the northern gate. Visit it for the space and historical setting; a flag-raising visit is a separate early-start plan. Early morning is best for the flag ceremony; otherwise choose the reserved slot that fits your Palace entry.

  • Hours: Use the assigned reservation slot and security checkpoint; the municipal listing gives ordinary access hours, while special notices can alter them.
  • Tickets: Free. Reserve the Square itself by real name 1–7 days ahead on its official platform; carry the visiting ID. 24 Sep 2026 authority notice
  • Time: 1–2 h on the Square, plus security time.
  • Address: 天安门广场(预约指定安检入口)· 北京市东城区西长安街。北京市文旅景区页 · 广场预约公告
  • Getting there: Line 1 Tiananmen East or West; follow the checkpoint shown on your reservation. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: Assigned Square checkpoint → civic axis → Tiananmen Gate → Duanmen → Meridian Gate for a separately booked Palace visit → Shenwu Gate → Jingshan (#1 → #2 → #6). Without Palace entry, leave the Square toward Qianmen; the Imperial Core guide compares both routes. Palace-only visitors can approach Meridian Gate via the east or west moat roads. Palace approach

2. Palace Museum / Forbidden City · 故宫博物院

Walk through the Ming and Qing imperial complex for its ceremonial courts, residential halls and collections. This is the core historical interior for a first Beijing visit; choose one specialist gallery to go beyond the central axis. An early entry gives you the most room for the one-way route.

Pause in front of the Hall of Supreme Harmony before continuing north. The hall rises above three white-marble terraces; dragon decoration and the row of ten roof-corner figures express its ceremonial rank. The space was designed for major imperial ceremonies, so the broad approach is part of what you came to see. Look at the relationship between the hall, terrace and court before moving to the smaller halls beyond it. The museum's account of the hall

A collections visit has a different rhythm. Choose the Treasure Gallery for court jewellery, gold, silver and jade, or the Clock Gallery for Chinese and imported clocks; either gives you objects to study after the large outdoor spaces. Leave time for that branch instead of treating every gate as another photograph. The Imperial Core guide explains the Outer and Inner Court sequence and the choice of exit.

  • Hours: 08:30–17:00 Apr–Oct, last entry 16:00; 08:30–16:30 Nov–Mar, last entry 15:30. Closed Mondays except national holidays. Museum visit page
  • Tickets: CNY 60/40 by season; Treasure and Clock Galleries CNY 10 each. Book a dated passport ticket; no same-day sales. Students aged 18+ in undergraduate or lower-level education (excluding adult education) pay CNY 20 in both seasons with valid student proof; visitors aged 60+ pay CNY 30/20 by season with valid ID. Under-18 free admission is limited to Chinese citizens (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents) and foreign permanent residents. Official visitor information
  • Time: 3–5 h for the central route and one gallery.
  • Address: 故宫博物院(午门)· 北京市东城区景山前街4号。故宫地址 · 唯一入口
  • Getting there: Line 1 Tiananmen East, Exit B; use the Palace-approved approach to Meridian Gate. A Square reservation is separate. Museum directions
  • How to visit: Meridian Gate → Hall of Supreme Harmony → Hall of Central Harmony → Hall of Preserving Harmony → Imperial Garden → Shenwu Gate north exit toward Jingshan. Add the Treasure or Clock Gallery only with its separate ticket, and follow the posted diversion around Taihemen's restoration. Rent an English audio guide at Meridian Gate; return it before the exit. The Palace booking guide covers admission. Official visitor information · city audio-guide listing

Don't miss: The Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Imperial Garden and, with its separate ticket, the Treasure or Clock Gallery. Museum route

6. Jingshan Park · 景山公园

Wanchun Pavilion gives the classic panorama over the Palace’s roofs and Beijing’s Central Axis. Add Jingshan after the Palace's north exit when your group wants the hill climb; a separate journey makes sense mainly for skyline photography. Late afternoon is best for the roofscape when the park's closing time allows it.

  • Hours: 06:00–21:00 Apr–Oct, last entry 20:30; 06:30–20:00 Nov–Mar, last entry 19:30. Park guide
  • Tickets: Ordinary adult CNY 2; no reservation. Buy at a staffed gate with the original passport. City ticket answer
  • Time: 45–90 min for the summit and exit.
  • Address: 景山公园(南门)· 北京市西城区景山西街44号。市属公园地址与南门
  • Getting there: Directly across from the Palace's Shenwu (north) Gate; use Jingshan's South Gate. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: South Gate → Wanchun Pavilion for the Palace panorama → West Gate toward Beihai's South Gate; if you are finishing the visit here, return downhill to Jingshan's South Gate instead. Official visitor information

7. National Museum of China · 中国国家博物馆

Choose the National Museum for Chinese history through objects. Its permanent Ancient China exhibition runs from prehistory through the imperial dynasties; give it a separate museum block when collections matter more to you than another palace or park.

  • Hours: 09:00–17:30 Jun–Oct, last entry 16:30; 09:00–17:00 Nov–May, last entry 16:00. Closed Mondays except national holidays. Museum guide
  • Tickets: Free, with a separate timed reservation up to 7 days ahead; inventory releases daily at 17:00. Official visitor information
  • Time: 2–3 h for a selected history exhibition.
  • Address: 中国国家博物馆(北门)· 北京市东城区东长安街16号。国博参观须知
  • Getting there: Line 1 Tiananmen East, Exit C or D; enter at the museum's North Gate in your slot. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: North Gate security → the permanent Ancient China exhibition, following its Prehistory → Qin and Han → Ming and Qing sections → posted museum exit. Bring the booked original passport and confirmation; use a current show only as a deliberate alternative. English audio guides for Ancient China are listed by the museum. Museum visitor rules · permanent exhibition · audio-guide notice

Don't miss: The Prehistory, Qin and Han, and Ming and Qing sections of the permanent Ancient China exhibition. They give a usable historical arc without making a changing exhibition the default.

13. Beihai Park · 北海公园

Beihai offers an imperial lake and garden near the Palace–Jingshan core. Add the island and White Dagoba after Jingshan, or take the northern shore and Nine-Dragon Wall before Shichahai; skip a separate lake journey when your time already belongs to the Summer Palace.

  • Hours: Park 06:00–21:00 Apr–Oct; 06:30–20:00 Nov–Mar. Inner sites have shorter hours and ordinary Monday closures. Park guide
  • Tickets: CNY 10/5 park-only or 20/15 combined by season. No reservation; paper tickets at every gate, payable in RMB cash, Beijing Pass, Visa or Mastercard. Beihai ticket answer · municipal-park payment answer
  • Time: 1–2 h for the island or northern shore.
  • Address: 北海公园(南门)· 北京市西城区文津街1号。市属公园地址
  • Getting there: Line 6 Beihaibei for North Gate; after Jingshan approach Beihai's South Gate. Park access
  • How to visit: For a short visit, choose South Gate → Jade Islet and White Dagoba → South Gate, or North Gate → Nine-Dragon Wall and northern shore → North Gate. Official visitor information

We recommend Badaling for a first Beijing Wall day because you can book rail in both directions, though the busier section requires you to match train times with the scenic-area transfer. Choose Mutianyu instead when you have a dependable road return and want its forested ridge and lift choices. Compare Badaling, Mutianyu and Simatai, then secure the return.

5. Great Wall day · 长城

Badaling is a busier section, so select a rampart direction and a return train before the climb. An early outward train gives you more walking time before the return journey.

The attraction is the Wall following the ridge: a rampart walk lets you see one watchtower leading to the next and feel the changing gradient underfoot. Badaling's convenient railway makes a self-arranged outing easier to anchor; Mutianyu offers a different forested-ridge visit with a road journey at each end. Pick the section and the amount of climbing together. A lift changes how you reach the ridge, but does not turn the Wall into a level promenade.

  • Hours: Badaling 06:30–16:30 Apr–Oct / 07:30–16:00 Nov–Mar. Municipal visitor listing
  • Tickets: Badaling scenic admission CNY 40 Apr–Oct / 35 Nov–Mar; full-time students aged 18+ in undergraduate or lower-level education (excluding adult education) pay CNY 20/17.5 by season with valid supporting documents. Free entry for under-18s and visitors aged 60+ applies only to Chinese citizens (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan residents) and foreign permanent residents with valid ID. Staffed windows take cash, mobile payment and overseas-bank-card POS. Municipal concession terms · city foreign-visitor payment guide
  • Time: Full day, including the outward and return trains.
  • Address: 八达岭长城风景名胜区(关城入口)· 北京市延庆区军都山关沟古道北口。北京市文旅景区页
  • Getting there: Book Beijing North or Qinghe ↔ Badaling Great Wall high-speed rail in both directions on 12306. After the long station exit escalator, follow Guancheng / walking entrance signs for the rampart route; the station also faces the separate north cableway entrance. The suburban S2 Badaling stop is a different station. City rail description · station exit · station layout
  • How to visit: Default walking route: Guancheng → North 1 → North 4 → back to Guancheng and the rail station. Extend to North 8 only with enough time and energy; choose South 1 → South 4 as the shorter alternative. Get back to the station well before the return train: its gates stop check-in 12 minutes before departure, and the station has a long descent to the platforms. English audio commentary: Changyou Tong. The Mutianyu return guide covers the road alternative. Beijing tourism route · station boarding notice · English service

Lifts and steps: Badaling's north aerial cableway reaches North 8 and its south ground cableway reaches South 4; both CNY 100 one-way / 140 return (Visit Beijing, Sep 2024). Mutianyu's enclosed cable was listed at CNY 100 one-way / 140 return in August 2026. Its separate chairlift and toboggan use other tickets; their lift prices: see the operator ticket page. Steep steps remain after a lift. Mutianyu operator's dated fare · separate lift access

Mutianyu instead: Choose its forested ridge when you have a booked road return. Ordinary scenic admission is CNY 40; the operator also lists a separate CNY 45 postcard ticket and CNY 15 shuttle. The enclosed cable and east-side chairlift/slide use different tickets and gates. Use the North Ticket Gate for the enclosed cable or Slide Ticket Gate for the chairlift/slide, and the Mutianyu transport guide for the return. Municipal admission · operator's dated fare · gate guidance

Jinshanling, in Hebei, suits an overnight Wall trip.

The southern axis

We recommend #3 Temple of Heaven as the southern-axis anchor, then #8 Qianmen and Dashilan for a flexible street walk or meal.

3. Temple of Heaven · 天坛

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Echo Wall and Circular Mound make the Temple of Heaven a visit about imperial ritual rather than court life. The main monuments are the reason to buy the combined ticket. Morning is the best time for this outdoor route before the hotter part of the day.

Look for the contrast between enclosed halls and the open Circular Mound. This was a landscape for the emperors' rites to heaven and prayers for harvests. At the Circular Mound, groups of nine in the steps and stonework express that ritual symbolism; the Imperial Vault of Heaven, within the Echo Wall, held the tablets used in the ceremonies. These are three different spaces to notice, rather than three versions of the same photo stop. Park interpretation

  • Hours: Park 06:00–22:00 Apr–Oct / 06:30–22:00 Nov–Mar; main monuments 08:00–18:00 / 08:00–17:00. The monuments close Mondays except statutory holidays. Park guide
  • Tickets: Combined CNY 34/28 by season for Hall of Prayer, Echo Wall and Circular Mound; park-only CNY 15/10. Under-18 visitors with valid ID enter free; undergraduates with passport and student card can use a reduced combined ticket. Staffed gates take RMB cash, Beijing Pass, Visa and Mastercard. Municipal concessions · passport payment answer
  • Time: 2–3 h for the main monuments and a park walk.
  • Address: 天坛公园(东门)· 北京市东城区天坛路甲1号。市属公园名录 · 东门导览
  • Getting there: Line 5 Tiantandongmen / Temple of Heaven East Gate, Exit A; Line 8 Tianqiao, Exit C is a west-side option. Official visitor information

For the compressed three-day pairing with the Summer Palace, retrace to East Gate for Tiantandongmen Line 5 instead of exiting south. Official visitor information

8. Qianmen and Dashilan · 前门·大栅栏

Qianmen and Dashilan turn the southern axis into a street walk, with historic shopfronts, food and side lanes. Use them after the Temple of Heaven as a flexible meal stop; a separate trip makes sense mainly for food or street history.

  • Hours: Open access on public streets; individual shops and tower interiors set their own hours. Official district guide
  • Tickets: Free street walk, with no district reservation. Zhengyangmen tower interiors are separate booked visits. City district guide
  • Time: 1–2 h for the main street and a food stop.
  • Address: 前门大街(北口,正阳门箭楼南侧)· 北京市东城区前门大街;大栅栏街从前门大街向西进入。前门街区范围 · 大栅栏范围
  • Getting there: Line 2 Qianmen, about 100 m north of the district. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: Walk south on Qianmen Street, turn west into Dashilan, then return to the metro or choose quieter Yangmeizhu Xiejie. Official visitor information

Old-city north

The north of the old city offers two different half-days: #9 Lama Temple and #14 Confucius Temple for religious and educational history, or #10 Shichahai for lakes, courtyard lanes and an optional tower climb. Combine them only if you want a longer day; the neighbourhood walk deserves more than the leftover minutes after museums.

9. Lama Temple · 雍和宫

The Lama Temple is an active Tibetan Buddhist temple in former Qing royal buildings. Wanfuge and its Maitreya image give the visit a distinctive religious and artistic focus; choose it for that subject, then pair it with Guozijian Street instead of making an extra cross-city temple stop.

  • Hours: 09:00–17:00 Apr–Oct, last entry 16:30; 09:00–16:30 Nov–Mar, last entry 16:00. Temple hours
  • Tickets: CNY 25; buy online with your passport (QR-code entry) or at the ticket centre. Ticket route
  • Time: 1–2 h for the central halls.
  • Address: 雍和宫(南侧牌楼入口)· 北京市东城区雍和宫大街12号。北京市政府文保介绍
  • Getting there: Lines 2/5 Yonghegong (Lama Temple), Exit C. Beijing tourism access
  • How to visit: Enter from Yonghegong Street, follow the central halls through the Hall of the Wheel of Dharma (法轮殿) to Wanfuge and its Maitreya image, then return along the signed public route. Temple map; Beijing Tourism's English description

10. Shichahai, Drum and Bell Towers and hutongs · 什刹海·钟鼓楼·胡同

Choose Shichahai for water, hutongs and courtyard-scale streets. Late afternoon lets you climb a tower before it closes and finish by the lake at dusk. Treat the towers as optional when the free neighbourhood walk is the real reason to come north.

Let this be the slower part of the trip. Around the Palace the courtyards belong to an imperial complex; here the interest lies in the relationship between the lakeshore, branching lanes and courtyard homes. Walk one shore rather than racing to complete both lakes. Yandai Xiejie and Yinding Bridge give the walk recognisable points, while a tower interior adds a separate, stair-heavy viewpoint. The street-and-water experience is complete without buying that extra admission.

  • Hours: Open access by the lake and hutongs; the towers open 09:30–17:30 in the main season and 09:30–16:30 in the lower season. 2026 tower guide
  • Tickets: Free (lake and hutongs); Drum Tower CNY 20 / Bell Tower 10 / joint 30. Book a tower visit through the official WeChat channel. Official visitor information
  • Time: 1–2 h for a lake and hutong loop; allow more for tower interiors.
  • Address: 什刹海(前海荷花市场导航起点)· 北京市西城区地安门西大街北侧;北京钟鼓楼(鼓楼入口)· 北京市东城区钟楼湾胡同临字9号。什刹海位置 · 鼓楼地址
  • Getting there: Line 8 Shichahai for the lake or Lines 2/8 Gulou Dajie for the towers. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: Shichahai Station → Yandai Xiejie → Yinding Bridge → one Houhai shore → Shichahai Station; add Drum Tower → Bell Tower for the paid stair climb. Official visitor information

Watch out: A rickshaw or boat trip is separate from the free walk; agree on its route and full price before boarding. See the China tourist-scams guide.

14. Confucius Temple and Imperial College · 孔庙·国子监

The Confucius Temple and Imperial College explain the empire’s ritual and education system in one paired museum. Add them beside the Lama Temple when that story interests you; with limited time and little interest in education history, keep the street walk instead.

  • Hours: 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; closed Mondays except statutory holidays. City museum listing
  • Tickets: CNY 30 for the paired museum; buy online or at the museum ticket office with ID. Official visitor information
  • Time: 1–2 h for the paired halls and courtyards.
  • Address: 孔庙和国子监博物馆(北京孔庙正门)· 北京市东城区国子监街13号。北京市政府文保介绍
  • Getting there: Lines 2/5 Yonghegong to Guozijian Street; Exit G, then a short walk along Guozijian Street. City route
  • How to visit: Enter the Confucius Temple, see Dacheng Hall and examination stelae, cross into the Imperial College and Biyong Hall, then leave by the signed museum exit. Official visitor information

15. Prince Gong's Mansion · 恭王府

Prince Gong’s Mansion adds furnished Qing courtyards and a rear garden to a northern old-city day. Go inside when a residence is your priority; with only time for Shichahai's streets, the separately booked mansion is an easy cut.

  • Hours: 08:30–17:00, last entry 16:10; closed Mondays except statutory holidays. Operator guide
  • Tickets: CNY 40; reserve a real-name ticket online. Passport holders collect the entry credential at the comprehensive service desk. Operator rules
  • Time: 1–2 h for the residence and garden.
  • Address: 恭王府博物馆(一号门)· 北京市西城区前海西街17号。馆方交通与地址 · 一号门导览
  • Getting there: Line 6 Beihaibei, Exit B; about 300 m to Gate 1. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: Gate 1 → residence courtyards → rear garden and theatre → signed exit; continue to Shichahai if desired. Official visitor information

Northwest gardens and hills

We recommend #4 Summer Palace for a first northwest outing. Choose #16 Yuanmingyuan for the ruins story or #17 Fragrant Hills for a hill walk, each as the day's main purpose.

4. Summer Palace · 颐和园

Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill and the Long Corridor make the Summer Palace a large landscape visit. Pick one side of the park and an entrance that matches your onward route; a full circuit will take much longer. Start in the morning for the inner sights and a cooler lakeside walk.

The lake is the organising feature, not leftover space between buildings: water occupies roughly three quarters of the garden, whose design drew on Hangzhou's West Lake and gardens of southern China. Use the Long Corridor walk to alternate sheltered architecture with open views of Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill. That makes a lakeside half-day worthwhile even without trying to climb every hill or enter every interior. Garden landscape and routes

Choose the longer northward route below for more changes of scene; choose the return to East Palace Gate when a calm lake-and-corridor visit is the point. Yuanmingyuan's ruins and Fragrant Hills' ascent offer different outings, so there is little reason to rush all three into one northwest day.

  • Hours: Park 06:00–20:00 Apr–Oct / 06:30–19:00 Nov–Mar; inner sights 08:00–18:00 / 08:30–17:00, with selected interiors closed Mondays except holidays. Park guide
  • Tickets: Park-only CNY 30/20; combined CNY 60/50 by season. Foreign visitors aged 60+ can show a passport for free park entry. Staff-assisted passport purchase at the gate accepts RMB cash, Beijing Pass, Visa and Mastercard. Senior concession · city passport and payment answer
  • Time: Half a day for one coherent side of the park.
  • Address: 颐和园(东宫门)· 北京市海淀区宫门前街23号。市属公园地址
  • Getting there: Line 4 Xiyuan for East Palace Gate, or Line 4 Beigongmen for North Palace Gate. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: For a short first visit, East Palace Gate → Hall of Benevolence and Longevity → Hall of Happiness and Longevity → Long Corridor → turn back along the lakefront to East Palace Gate and Line 4 Xiyuan. With a longer block, continue from the corridor toward Marble Boat and Suzhou Street, then leave by North Palace Gate for Line 4 Beigongmen. Rent an English audio guide at East Palace Gate; an English guide service is also available. Park route options · gates and metro · guide service

16. Old Summer Palace · 圆明园

Yuanmingyuan is a ruins-and-memory landscape, not a second intact Summer Palace. Choose its Western Mansions and Great Fountain for the destruction-and-preservation story; a first-time visitor seeking an intact garden can use the northwest block for the Summer Palace instead.

  • Hours: Park gates 06:00–21:00 Apr–Oct, entry until 19:00; 06:30–19:30 Nov–Mar, entry until 17:30. Park hours
  • Tickets: CNY 10 park-only or CNY 25 pass with Western Mansions; ordinary park entry sold on-site without reservation. City listing
  • Time: 2–3 h for the ruins and selected park paths.
  • Address: 圆明园遗址公园(南门)· 北京市海淀区清华西路28号。园方地址 · 南门导览
  • Getting there: Line 4 Yuanmingyuan, Exit B for Qichunyuan/South Gate. Park transit
  • How to visit: South Gate → Ginkgo Avenue → Western Mansions and Great Fountain → East Gate; the operator offers a shorter East Gate ruins loop. Park routes

17. Fragrant Hills · 香山公园

Fragrant Hills is for a western-hill walk and, in season, autumn colour. Give it a separate block only when a hill climb or the leaf season is a trip priority; use a nearer park for a short stroll. A clear autumn morning is best for the climb and changing leaves.

  • Hours: 06:00–19:30 Apr–15 Nov, last entry 18:30; 06:00–19:00 for the rest of the year, last entry 18:00. Inner temples close ordinary Mondays. Park guide
  • Tickets: CNY 10/5 park entry by season; official booking or a staffed municipal-park window with the original passport. Official visitor information
  • Time: Half a day for a hill walk.
  • Address: 香山公园(东门)· 北京市海淀区买卖街40号。市属公园导览
  • Getting there: Xijiao Line to Fragrant Hills Station, then follow signs to the East Gate. Official visitor information
  • How to visit: East Gate → Zhisong Garden → Yuhua Hall → Incense Burner Peak → retrace the walking route to East Gate and the Xijiao Line station. Take the signed walking route in both directions. Official park guide

Modern Beijing and family interests

Choose this part of Beijing by interest. #12 798's factory lanes and galleries have a different subject from the imperial city; #18 Capital Museum adds the history of the city itself. #11 is a short architectural outing unless you want a venue tour. #19 Zoo and #20 Universal serve separate family interests, with Universal taking a full day.

11. Bird's Nest and Water Cube · 鸟巢·水立方

See the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube together for the scale of Beijing’s Olympic architecture. The public-axis exterior view is an east-side add-on; make a separate trip or buy an interior tour only when Olympic venues themselves are the purpose. Dusk is best for viewing the two buildings together from the public axis.

  • Hours: Public exterior views follow Olympic Park access. Stadium and Water Cube interior hours change with events: read the Bird's Nest current notices and Water Cube visitor guide for the chosen day. If the Bird's Nest website is unavailable, ask its visitor service at 400-600-2008 before committing to an interior tour.
  • Tickets: Exterior views Free; Bird's Nest overall-view tour CNY 100, Water Cube basic tour CNY 30. Each interior needs its own ticket. Stadium · Water Cube
  • Time: 45–90 min for both exterior views.

12. 798 Art District · 798艺术区

The former factory buildings of 798·751 now hold contemporary galleries, studios and industrial lanes. Use UCCA Beijing as the named art anchor, then walk the industrial streets; cross the city for this block when contemporary art or reused factories interest you more than another historic site.

  • Hours: Open access in the district; individual galleries typically open 10:00–18:00 or 11:00–19:00 and some close Mondays. District guide
  • Tickets: District entry Free; named exhibitions may charge or require a free reservation/order. Official visitor information

18. Capital Museum · 首都博物馆

The Capital Museum tells Beijing’s local history, a different lens from the national collection and the Palace. Choose it for Beijing history; choose the National Museum for a broader China story.

  • Hours: Usual daytime opening is 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00, with Monday closure. Temporary schedules can override both hours and the closed day; confirm the current visit rules before choosing a Monday or Tuesday. Use a daytime opening for the Beijing-history galleries. 19. Beijing Zoo · 北京动物园

Beijing Zoo is a family choice built around the Giant Panda House and an animal loop. Buy the panda-included admission when pandas are the reason to go; without children or panda interest, use this west-city block for the Capital Museum instead.

  • Hours: Zoo 07:30–18:00 Apr–Oct / 07:30–17:00 Nov–Mar; Panda House opens at 08:00. City zoo guide

20. Universal Beijing Resort · 北京环球度假区

Universal Studios Beijing is a dedicated theme-park day for visitors who want its rides and shows. Give it a full day only when those attractions are a trip priority; the separately accessible CityWalk is the lighter Tongzhou choice. Decide on must-do lands before buying queue products.

  • Hours: The park schedule changes by date; use the operator's calendar for the date on your ticket. Official visitor information
  • Tickets: Buy admission for the actual visit date through the operator offers. CityWalk is separately accessible without park admission; Universal Express is a separately priced queue product with its own included attractions and conditions.
  • Time: Full day for the park, plus travel.
  • Address: 北京环球影城(主入口)· 北京市通州区梨园镇北京环球度假区。度假区联系地址 · 主入口服务
  • Getting there: Universal Resort Station, Lines 7 and 1; Exits B, C or D lead toward CityWalk security, about 7 minutes on foot. Operator transport
  • How to visit: CityWalk security → park gate with the dated ticket and booked passport → Hollywood → Transformers: Battle for the AllSpark → Jurassic World → Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey → CityWalk and Universal Resort metro. (Operator's suggested order; choose two priority rides and keep the third optional according to height, operating status and queues.) Operator itinerary · metro approach

Choose two ride priorities before buying Express. If everyone who wants to ride is at least 122 cm and meets the full safety rules, make Transformers: Battle for the AllSpark and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey your two priorities; keep Jurassic World Adventure as the extra. For a rider from 102 cm to below 122 cm, make Transformers and Jurassic World Adventure the priorities, with the required accompanying adult, and bypass Forbidden Journey. If the party is below those limits or cannot use these motion rides, make this a lands, show and meal day instead of buying Express for inaccessible rides. These are our planning choices, not a guarantee that every attraction will operate or fit into one day.

Use the official dated admission and offers, follow the chosen product's reservation instructions, and bring the original passport matching the booking. Express does not replace admission: before paying, read that date's included attractions, usage count and change/refund terms. The park rules require valid admission and identification; unused, used and expired products can have different refund boundaries. Save the operator map and today's opening and show information in the official app or mini-program.

Height is the first screen, not the whole safety decision. The following operator rules were checked on 1 October 2026. Read the linked full restrictions before joining the queue; staff's fit and restraint check controls boarding.

Ride Operator height rule What makes it a poor choice / how to bypass it
Transformers: Battle for the AllSpark Minimum 102 cm; riders 102–122 cm need an accompanying adult. A 3-D motion ride with sudden acceleration, stops, spinning and jolts. If height, motion, medical or restraint rules exclude a rider, stay in the Transformers Metrobase streets and meet the riding party outside the ride exit before moving on.
Jurassic World Adventure Minimum 102 cm; riders 102–122 cm need an accompanying adult. Sudden movements, tilting and jolts; this is not a quiet dinosaur exhibition. Bypass the queue and keep the Jurassic World land walk, then reunite before heading to Harry Potter.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey Minimum 122 cm. Dramatic motion, stops and drops; the operator provides a test seat near the entrance. Use it before committing to the queue. Non-riders can keep the Hogsmeade streets and join the party at Three Broomsticks.

Do not treat a shorter ride as automatically suitable during pregnancy or with a heart, back, neck or other listed condition. Transformers and Jurassic require transfer from a wheelchair; Forbidden Journey has its own transfer and independent walking requirements. If the party splits, agree a named meeting point and keep children with a responsible adult rather than leaving them alone at an exit.

  1. Keep the existing park order, with an actual meal and show: Hollywood → Transformers Metrobase → Jurassic World Isla Nublar → The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Ride the two priorities when their current operating status and queue fit; the third is expendable. After the Harry Potter stop, make Three Broomsticks · 三把扫帚 the seated meal break in Hogsmeade. Its British-style menu includes options such as fish and chips and roast chicken; use the restaurant's actual menu and opening status for dietary needs and availability.

  2. Continue to WaterWorld Stunt Show for a named performance break, using today's app time rather than a fixed time printed in a guide. It uses loud sound, fire and water effects; the operator's access guidance excludes visitors sensitive to loud noise or fog and requires an adult with children. Keep the seated meal as the rest break if that show does not suit the party. If its next performance would consume the return margin, skip it. With time left, continue into Kung Fu Panda Land of Awesomeness; Carousel of Kung Fu Heroes is an optional circular, up-and-down ride with its own safety restrictions and adult accompaniment below 122 cm. Keep a walk through the land instead when those rules do not fit. Minion Land is a further optional stop, not a fourth must-do. This follows the operator's adult itinerary; live queues, closures and the return deadline can shorten it.

  • Finish at your Beijing hotel door. For the Wangfujing/Dengshikou bases above, leave the park gate → CityWalk → Universal Resort Station · 环球度假区站 → Line 1–Batong westbound to Dongdan · 东单 → Line 5 northbound to Dengshikou · 灯市口 → the saved entrance of your booked Regent Beijing or Sunworld Hotel Wangfujing. Keep the same hotel entrance used on arrival; the station is not the end of the return. The resort transport page identifies the station approach, while Beijing Subway's Line 1–Batong and Line 5 station sequence supplies the interchange. Before entering the park, use the current Universal Resort station and Dongdan Line 5 information to set a park departure that leaves time for the CityWalk walk, westbound train and northbound connection. The last train from the resort alone is not a guarantee of the last usable hotel connection.

  • If that connection no longer fits, drop the final optional stop or show. If you choose a road return, follow the resort's signs to its designated taxi/guest pickup area and use the booked hotel's Chinese name and exact entrance address as the destination; agree the actual fare or app quote before the ride. Do not substitute an unconfirmed night bus for the booked bed.

Day trips from Beijing

Beyond the Great Wall, we recommend Tianjin for a rail day trip only after the return is secured. The headline train time never includes getting from the hotel to Beijing South or from the destination station to the sight.

  • Tianjin · 天津 — a port-city walk around the Five Great Avenues and Haihe. Leave the Wangfujing base for Beijing South, then take a 12306 intercity train to the Tianjin station actually printed on the ticket; the fastest Beijing South–Tianjin station services take about 30 minutes, but another Tianjin station changes the city transfer. Before leaving Beijing, hold a return train to Beijing South and set a turn-back time from the Haihe/Five Avenues that lets you reach the booked Tianjin station before its check-in cutoff; if the route or return seat fails, keep the city day in Beijing. Spring and autumn suit the walk. Tianjin rail service · Tianjin city walk. For the station-to-sights walk and a shorter Beijing day return, use the Tianjin city guide.
  • Chengde · 承德 — choose an overnight for the Qing Mountain Resort and outlying temples. Go from the hotel to Beijing Chaoyang, take a 12306 train to Chengde South and allow a separate road or local-transit transfer into the resort area; the fastest 50-minute rail example in the cited 2025 notice is not a hotel-to-gate journey. Book the room and next-day return Chengde South → Beijing Chaoyang before leaving Beijing. Without those legs, choose Tianjin or stay in Beijing; summer suits the lakeside landscape. Chengde rail notice · resort and temples
  • Gubei Water Town and Simatai · 古北水镇·司马台长城 — a water town below the Wall with a separately priced night climb. Beijing Bus Group's 3 April 2026 notice names Tourist Shuttle 22 from Wangjing West Hub (望京西枢纽站) to Gubei Water Town, with listed departures at 09:00/13:00 and returns at 12:00/17:00 in that notice. The city's August 2026 rail-disruption advice still lists Shuttle 22 as an access option. From your Beijing hotel, reach Wangjing West Hub for the outward ride; read the actual-date departures, return stop and fare in the Beijing Bus Group's 一路同行 app before making this a day return. Leave Simatai early enough for that confirmed return. For the May–October night Wall visit, choose an overnight room and a next-day ride before paying for night entry.

Qianmen meal
After #8 Qianmen and Dashilan, sit down for Peking duck at Quanjude's Qianmen branch · 全聚德前门店.
Wangfujing hotpot

Separate Niujie detour
Make Niujie a separate food detour: Hongji Snacks · 洪记小吃 serves fried sticky-rice cakes, and the district route continues toward Fayuan Temple.

Choose the stop that fits the day's geography and your dietary needs; the Beijing food guide has a show-to-staff dietary card.

Shop along the route.

Wangfujing
Browse Wangfujing Pedestrian Street · 王府井步行街 for department stores and established Beijing brands.
Tea near Qianmen
Buy jasmine tea at Wu Yutai's Dashilan West Street shop · 吴裕泰大栅栏西街店 when you visit Qianmen.
Clothing and craft choices
For cloisonné, go to the Beijing Enamel Factory · 北京市珐琅厂 and inspect the pieces there. Taikoo Li Sanlitun · 三里屯太古里 is the modern fashion and lifestyle stop.

Give the evening a real destination.

Huguang Guild Hall
Huguang Guild Hall · 湖广会馆 in Xicheng hosts Peking Opera performances in a historic theatre; pair a performance with a southern-axis day when its programme fits your date.
National Centre calendar
The National Centre for the Performing Arts calendar gives another named performance option near the imperial core.

Choose the actual venue, language or surtitles, ticket and return journey before paying. A flexible lake or hutong walk suits an evening after a long #5 Great Wall day better than a fixed-time show across the city.

Let the season change the choice.

Spring
Spring is brief, so use a comfortable day for the imperial-core and hutong walks.
Summer
Summer is hot and rainier; keep a #5 Wall or #17 Fragrant Hills outdoor day movable and reserve an indoor museum block for a wet day.
Autumn
Autumn is short; #17 Fragrant Hills is the red-leaf hill choice when its walking route suits your group.
Winter
Winter is cold and dry, so pair shorter outdoor blocks with a #7 National Museum or #18 Capital Museum visit.

National Day and Spring Festival alter rail demand and individual museum schedules, so secure scarce journeys and timed entries early. Beijing climate · Fragrant Hills guide · holiday rail notice · National Museum holiday and temporary notices

Budget for the visits you choose

Separate sightseeing admission from the hotel and transport bill. As an adult admission-only example, the Palace base ticket, Jingshan, Temple of Heaven combined ticket and Summer Palace park ticket total:

SeasonFour-visit adult admission
April–OctoberCNY 126 in April–October (60 + 2 + 34 + 30)
November–Marchor CNY 90 in November–March (40 + 2 + 28 + 20)

using the linked ordinary prices in the sight entries. This buys four different visits across your stay, not a one-day route. A Palace gallery, Summer Palace inner attraction, Wall entry, Wall trains or lifts, meals and accommodation are additional.

For a lighter-spend day, the hutong and Qianmen street walks need no area ticket; museum admission can also be free with the required reservation. A Wall day costs more than its headline scenic ticket because the return transport and any lift have separate prices. Use the actual room total for your dates in the lodging comparison; the listed hotel snapshots are not a trip quote.

Before you go

Carry the original passport tied to your reservations, and save your hotel address and return route offline. The payments guide, connectivity guide, accommodation-registration and passport check-in guide, tourist-scam guide, lost-passport guide and emergency numbers cover problems beyond this city page. Prices and hours were checked in September 2026; check the official site on the day you pay.

For a deeper city-centre choice, read the Imperial Core guide. For one specific task, use the Palace booking, Mutianyu return, airport arrival, where-to-stay, food, lower-walking and departure guides. A four-day itinerary shows one way to combine the choices. Specific questions about hotel breakfast and smoking, hotel luggage screening, traditional dress at the Palace and a short PEK layover have separate answers.

City page updated 29 September 2026. Museum schedules were rechecked 29 September; other admission, hotel and transport claims retain the source dates shown beside them.

2 October 2026: added separate PEK flight-connection entry points beside the arrival and departure choices. Existing operational source checks retain their stated dates.

2 October 2026: Added Palace booking and Great Wall detail links beside the sight choices, and linked the Universal date-price calendar. Existing fact-check dates remain unchanged.
