Choose one shorter visit at a time. The four choices below are alternatives to a longer sightseeing route; they are not a requirement to visit all four on consecutive days. A taxi removes a transfer walk, not the steps or distances inside a historic site.
Palace Museum: keep the useful part
- Keep:
- Palace Museum south-to-north
- Leave out:
- Jingshan and distant dinner
- Entrance, route and return:
- Confirm the closest lawful drop-off, then use the current permitted approach to Meridian Gate
- Seat / turnaround / recovery:
- Finish after north exit and seated lunch
Confirm the marked Palace route and equipment for your visit date
The Palace Museum currently publishes an accessibility-route map and says its mini-program includes an accessibility route. It also warns that the site contains many steps, steep slopes and uneven surfaces. Use the official map to identify the route you need staff to confirm; do not infer that every drawn branch, threshold, lift or exit is continuously step-free or operating on your date. Confirm the exact entrance-to-exit route with the Palace Museum before travel.
Mutianyu: keep the useful part
- Keep:
- Pre-confirmed direct transfer + official Tower 14–15 cable-car out-and-back
- Leave out:
- Towers 19–20 and ropeway/slide loop
- Entrance, route and return:
- Enclosed cable car up and down
- Seat / turnaround / recovery:
- No fixed evening plan
Temple of Heaven: keep the useful part
- Keep:
- Temple of Heaven's Hall of Prayer and only the additional core sites the traveller can reach after a seated break, followed by seated lunch and hotel rest
- Leave out:
- Qianmen and Tiananmen Square by default; the Square is optional only with confirmed entry and spare walking/queue capacity
- Entrance, route and return:
- Taxi to the East Gate. Plan a seat before your usual rest interval; before continuing south, check open paths, remaining capacity and pre-confirmed lawful pickup at the intended open exit. If these fail, shorten before the southern sites and use the workable open gate rather than force a long return across the park.
- Seat / turnaround / recovery:
- Return to the hotel after lunch by default. Only a separately chosen, confirmed Square visit within the traveller's remaining capacity replaces that rest block.
Summer Palace: keep the useful part
- Keep:
- Summer Palace: East Palace Gate (东宫门) → grounds around Renshou Hall (仁寿殿) and Leshou Hall (乐寿堂), entering only where open → the east start of Long Corridor (长廊), then return by the same approach to East Palace Gate.
- Leave out:
- Longevity Hill, the Marble Boat extension and the full lake circuit.
- Entrance, route and return:
- Taxi to East Palace Gate and return from the same gate area. Agree the legal road pickup pin with the driver before entering; the palace gate itself is the meeting reference, not a claimed taxi rank.
- Seat / turnaround / recovery:
- Turn back before walking further down Long Corridor; keep the afternoon for rest.
Use a named Summer Palace turnaround
The Summer Palace variant reverses at the east start of the Long Corridor and returns to East Palace Gate. On an ordinary Monday, use the open grounds; check each indoor hall before adding it. Confirm distance, slopes and available seats with park staff; turn back at the east start of Long Corridor or sooner. Confirm any step-free requirement with the park before entry; if the distance is still too much, use the Capital Museum alternative below on a confirmed open day or return to the hotel.
Set the walking and rest conditions before buying
Ask each attraction about unavoidable stairs, slopes, operating lifts, seats and the exact entrance-to-exit route before buying. Historic thresholds, security approaches, crowds, slopes and temporary equipment closures can change the real load.
Set your distance, stairs and seated-break limits
Use limits that fit your own usual capacity and any medical advice you follow. A kilometre allowance does not account for queues, uneven surfaces or repeated stairs.
- Arrange a seated break before fatigue or pain builds; use your own usual rest interval
- No optional climb after the Palace Museum
- Use a taxi when a transfer saves walking rather than only time
- At the first sustained pain increase, shorten the current route
- Unstable footing or sharp pain ends the sightseeing block
Ask before paying
Send these to the attraction or transfer operator with the exact travel date.
- Distance from drop-off to security
- Number and location of unavoidable stairs
- Slope or uneven-surface sections
- Lift/cable-car closure plan
- Nearest seated rest and accessible toilet
- Where a driver can actually wait for pickup
- For the Palace Museum, save the official accessibility map and ask whether its marked route is fully operating that day
These are no longer optional suggestions
Remove these when hills, stairs or repeated long walks exceed your own limits.
- Jingshan climb after the Palace Museum
- Longevity Hill and the full Kunming Lake circuit
- Towers 19–20 at Mutianyu
- Ropeway/slide loop and public multi-transfer Wall route
- Long Qianmen or hutong wander
- Dinner across town after a full sightseeing day
Use your own agreed stop signs at lunch
Return to the hotel when walking, balance or pain reaches your stop line. If recovery fails, cancel the evening and shorten the next morning.
- Pain compared with normal
- Balance and stair confidence
- Heat/cold response
- Medication and hydration
- Ability to reach the pre-booked return point
Lower walking starts with the hotel
Choose the exact property for a short, uncomplicated walk to a useful station or use taxi/ride-hail for the first transfer. A hotel that is cheaper but 900 metres through an awkward crossing adds the same burden twice every day.
Pre-decide what is optional
Jingshan, a full Summer Palace circuit and long hutong walks are optional in this version. Decide that before fatigue appears. Removing a block is a plan, not a failure.
Ask operators precise mobility questions
Do not ask only “is it accessible?” Ask about stairs, slopes, walking distance from drop-off, lift closure, toilet location, wheelchair policy and whether the driver can wait at the actual return point.
When the plan stops working
- Energy drops after the morning sight
Return to the hotel. Remove the evening block instead of taking a long taxi to “see one more thing.”
- The Tower 14 cable car is suspended
Do not substitute the walking ascent, ropeway or slide. Stay below the wall or leave the scenic area unless staff confirm another route fits the traveller’s stated limits.
- Summer Palace is too large
Consider Capital Museum · 首都博物馆 instead on a confirmed open date. The usual daytime schedule is 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00, with Monday closure. Temporary arrangements can change both hours and the closed day; use the official visit page and museum notice list before choosing a Monday or Tuesday. Confirm that the exhibitions you want are open. Its current notice says no advance reservation: bring valid ID, arrive at the North Gate · 北门 by a pre-arranged vehicle if the published Muxidi station walk is too long, choose one or two open galleries for a short indoor visit, and leave by the signed basement East Gate · 东门 with a separately confirmed pickup. The operator describes a ramped route, wheelchair/elevator access and accessible toilets; ask staff to confirm the North Gate–gallery–basement East Gate route, available lifts and a seat before starting. If the current route or museum schedule fails, protect the traveller's rest block rather than sending them to an unverified Ritan Park gate.
Save the action checklist
- Confirm a central hotel with an acceptable exact entrance-to-station route
- Book a direct transfer you have verified and the official round-trip cable-car product
- Save the Tower 14–15 turnaround rule
- Set seated-break reminders for your own capacity and agree the lunch stop signs
- Recheck cable-car operation and attraction alerts 24 hours before each day
Questions for this trip
Is this itinerary wheelchair accessible?
Confirm the exact route and operating equipment with each attraction. Historic thresholds, gates, stairs, crowds and temporary closures can require a shorter visit or a different route.
Which day should I shorten first?
Shorten the Summer Palace route and remove evening neighbourhood walks before compressing the Palace Museum or adding a public-transfer Great Wall day.
