Zigong An unusually clear story of a city: salt made its wealth, fossils reveal its deep past, and lantern-making carries its craft into the present.
Zigong rewards travellers who like understanding how a place works. Its salt museum explains an industry; Shenhai Well makes the machinery tangible. The dinosaur museum begins with fossils found here, while the lantern museum shows the craft behind the city’s spectacular festival displays. Salt-trade cooking gives the days a strong local flavour.
Use two full days and three nights for the four main stops without rushing. This is a worthwhile trip even when the large lantern festival is not operating. Treat a festival at 中华彩灯大世界 as a separate, dated evening product with its own ticket and return transport. The downtown 中国彩灯博物馆 is a different place and does not provide a ticket to that festival.

Deep-well salt technology inside an elaborate merchants’ guildhall · Central Ziliujing, Jiefang Road
1½–2 hours · The museum’s published adult general ticket is ¥35. Optional guiding is separate; any concession requires the relevant document and current eligibility.
A towering wooden derrick and the physical scale of deep-well salt production · Da’an District, separate from the downtown museums
1–1½ hours · The named ticket seller lists a ¥25 adult entrance ticket. Choose the plain admission product if that is all you need; an AI-photo add-on alone is not an admission ticket.
Fossil skeletons and the excavation-site context of the Dashanpu discoveries · Northeast of central Zigong, Dashanpu area
2½–3 hours · Reserve the dated museum ticket through its official channel or a supported ticket platform. The current ticket total is a budget input; old ¥40/¥42 listings are not used as a confirmed current price.
Lantern craftsmanship and the history of Zigong’s festival tradition · Zigong Lantern Park, central Ziliujing
1–1½ hours · Free general admission with a reservation. Use 中国彩灯博物馆 on WeChat or its listed Meituan reservation route; a free ticket still needs the museum’s entry process.
Choose the places before booking the rooms
Open full-size area diagram ↗. The numbered places match this guide’s choices. This editorial area diagram groups visits; box position does not encode direction, distance, paths or an entrance. ChinaMile diagram; location sources. Navigation: search the Chinese name in Amap.
Central-city day: Salt History Museum, lunch and China Lantern Museum. Da’an/Dashanpu day: Dinosaur Museum in the morning, lunch and Shenhai Well. Each pair still needs a short transfer where walking is unattractive; this is not one continuous museum campus.
Optional lantern evening: check the actual date, entry window and return arrangement for 中华彩灯大世界 through the event’s official ticket channel before adding it. Large displays and shows change by edition. If no event is operating, keep dinner and a short city walk; do not redirect a driver to the downtown park expecting the same festival. For a first Sichuan trip focused on a broader range of major sights, compare Chengdu.
Choose a base that fits this trip
Central Ziliujing near the old-city museums: best if the salt story, a compact city day and local meals are the priority. Choose a car-accessible street and check stairs, lift access and evening noise.
Huixing Road / the newer commercial area: useful for a modern hotel and dinner choices. Expect taxi transfers to the heritage sites; a modern base is not automatically next to the dinosaur museum.
Near the festival venue: consider only for a confirmed lantern-led visit. It trades convenience to one evening for extra daytime transfers, so it is not the default here. A station-area hotel is similarly a transit choice. Confirm your room, cancellation terms, exact Chinese address and passport check-in before payment.
To find a room, open Zigong hotel listings and enter your dates, two adults and three nights. Use the map to choose central Ziliujing near the salt museum and dining streets; confirm the actual entrance, passport check-in and cancellation conditions with the property before paying. This is a booking search, not a checked room or a guaranteed rate.
Make the meals part of the day
Zigong’s 盐帮菜 salt-trade cuisine is a reason to stay for dinner, but its heat can be assertive. For two adults, share one main, a vegetable and rice, then add a small dish after tasting. 冷吃兔 is rabbit cooked with chilli and served cool; small bone-in pieces require care. 水煮牛肉 is a strongly seasoned beef dish, not simply beef boiled in plain water.
For an easier meal, ask for 富顺豆花, soft tofu with a separate dipping sauce, plus a vegetable and rice. Confirm what is in the sauce or stock if you avoid meat, fish or allergens. 少辣 requests less chilli, but a pre-prepared dish may not be adjustable.
Eat near the central hotel after the museum days instead of crossing town for an unverified famous restaurant. The Huixing Road area is one practical dining base. No current menu price or named restaurant reservation has been tested; the budget uses meal allowances.
The places in detail
1. Zigong Salt History Museum · 自贡市盐业历史博物馆 · 西秦会馆
The building is part of the lesson. The Xiqin Guildhall was financed by salt merchants, and its rooflines, courtyards and decoration show what the industry could support. Inside, tools and models explain why obtaining salt from deep underground required an integrated system of drilling, lifting, fuel and evaporation.
Follow one production sequence rather than trying to memorise every tool. This makes the later visit to Shenhai Well more intelligible: you will recognise what a piece of machinery was meant to do. If you want an English guide, the museum asks visitors to arrange it in advance; the self-guided plan does not assume one is available on arrival.
Hours
Use a confirmed open morning. The museum issues holiday changes and closure notices; the May holiday extension is not a permanent timetable. Read the current date in its booking channel before arranging the visit.
Tickets
The museum’s published adult general ticket is ¥35. Optional guiding is separate; any concession requires the relevant document and current eligibility.
Time
1½–2 hours
Chinese address
自贡市自流井区解放路;自贡市盐业历史博物馆(西秦会馆)
Getting there
Take a taxi to the current permitted drop-off near 解放路西秦会馆, then follow pedestrian signs if the road approach is restricted. Do not confuse this with a newer museum project or another branch.
How to visit
Look at the guildhall architecture first, then follow the exhibits from drilling to lifting brine and making salt. Keep the sequence in mind for Shenhai Well the following day.
2. Shenhai Well · 燊海井
The wooden derrick gives the salt industry a memorable shape. Compare the height and structure above ground with the much less visible work of reaching brine far below. The site was completed in 1835 and is associated with the development of deep percussion drilling; you do not need a performance to appreciate the engineering.
Come after the Salt History Museum if possible, so the machinery has context. Leave time to look carefully rather than using the well only as a short photo stop. Night products have been advertised separately, but they are not assumed to operate on every evening or included in the ordinary daytime ticket.
Hours
The seller lists 08:30–17:30 from February through October and 08:30–17:00 from November through January. Use the current dated order and site notice if these change. This plan is a daytime visit.
Tickets
The named ticket seller lists a ¥25 adult entrance ticket. Choose the plain admission product if that is all you need; an AI-photo add-on alone is not an admission ticket.
Time
1–1½ hours
Chinese address
自贡市大安区大安街289号;燊海井景区游客中心
Getting there
Take a road transfer to 燊海井景区游客中心. It is a distinct stop from the Dinosaur Museum; agree the next pickup on a road reachable by the vehicle.
How to visit
Look at the derrick, lifting and processing equipment from public visitor areas. A live production demonstration is not guaranteed by this itinerary; do not enter working or closed areas.
3. Zigong Dinosaur Museum · 自贡恐龙博物馆
The reason to come is the connection between fossils and the ground where they were found. Compare the excavation setting with the mounted reconstructions: the museum lets you see both the evidence and the interpretation, rather than only lifelike models. Children who enjoy fossils can spend longer here and shorten another museum.
The museum’s reopened halls supply the core visit. A theme park, commercial “dinosaur experience” and the museum are not interchangeable purchases. Keep this as the morning’s main activity, have lunch afterward, then visit Shenhai Well if energy allows.
Hours
The operator reopening notice gives 08:30–17:30, last ticket sale 16:45 and entry 17:00. Check the actual booking calendar for closure days or changes; do not infer that every Monday operates.
Tickets
Reserve the dated museum ticket through its official channel or a supported ticket platform. The current ticket total is a budget input; old ¥40/¥42 listings are not used as a confirmed current price.
Time
2½–3 hours
Chinese address
自贡市大安区燊海井路四段268号;自贡恐龙博物馆
Getting there
Travel by taxi or a current public-transport route to the museum’s own visitor entrance, not 方特恐龙王国. The neighbouring themed attraction is a different paid experience.
How to visit
Prioritise the fossil-site hall and discovery exhibits. The verified reopening notice covers the 遗址馆 and 探秘馆; it excludes the 科普馆 / Hall 3. Do not make a third hall essential unless the operator confirms it has reopened.
4. China Lantern Museum · 中国彩灯博物馆
The museum is the useful year-round way to understand lantern culture. Its displays explain how the craft and public celebrations developed, and give a smaller-scale view of the work behind the big illuminated scenes. Visit for materials, design and history, rather than expecting an outdoor festival in miniature.
It combines naturally with the Salt History Museum on the central-city day. If a large evening festival is confirmed for your dates, seeing the museum first can add context; if no festival is running, the two-day core plan still stands.
Hours
Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:30, last entry 17:00; ordinarily closed Monday except public holidays. Follow the latest museum notice for exceptions.
Tickets
Free general admission with a reservation. Use 中国彩灯博物馆 on WeChat or its listed Meituan reservation route; a free ticket still needs the museum’s entry process.
Time
1–1½ hours
Chinese address
自贡市自流井区公园路6号;中国彩灯博物馆
Getting there
Go to 中国彩灯博物馆 inside 自贡彩灯公园. This is the downtown museum, not 中华彩灯大世界, the large event venue outside this walking group.
How to visit
Reserve before visiting and use the entrance shown by the museum. If the form cannot handle a passport, call +86 813 2118550 for its assisted procedure. A park walk is a reasonable fallback if the museum is closed, but is not the same exhibition.
A workable stay, from arrival to departure
Arrival evening · night 1: settle in centrally, eat salt-trade dishes in modest shared portions, and confirm the museum reservation dates. Check whether a Monday affects the lantern museum before assigning the city day.
Central-city day · night 2: visit the Salt History Museum in the morning, have lunch nearby, then transfer to the China Lantern Museum. Keep time for a rest and dinner. If a dated lantern festival is actually operating and booked, add that evening with its own return ride; do not make it a condition of enjoying the city.
Da’an/Dashanpu day · night 3: start at the Dinosaur Museum and allow a proper morning. Have lunch, take a separate ride to Shenhai Well and return to the hotel for dinner. With children who want longer among the fossils, shorten the well visit or move it to a spare arrival afternoon if the current hours allow.
Departure morning: take the confirmed station transfer. Swap the two sightseeing days to fit museum calendars. For one full day and two nights, choose either the salt-led pair of Salt History Museum + Shenhai Well, or the dinosaur-led morning + one central museum; do not compress all four into a rushed stop between trains.
Book the arrival and the return
Search Zigong 自贡 on 12306 for the date and origin you need. Confirm the station on the ticket and arrange its hotel transfer separately. Do not substitute an older station location from a guide or assume a railway arrival puts you in the historic centre.
Use the signed taxi queue or a matched ride booking for the station and museum transfers. Keep the full Chinese attraction names: 自贡市盐业历史博物馆(西秦会馆), 燊海井, 自贡恐龙博物馆 and 中国彩灯博物馆. They are four separate destinations. The suggested route does not depend on a checked local-bus timetable.
For a booking form that cannot process your passport, resolve the purchase before paying for a special trip: Salt History Museum +86 813 2202083; Dinosaur Museum +86 813 5801235; Lantern Museum +86 813 2118550; Shenhai Well +86 813 5106214. Carry the original document and ticket confirmation. The museum’s identity check and a platform’s payment acceptance are separate questions.
A transparent budget for two
For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full days, use 3R + A + D + ¥900–1,220. R is the nightly room quote; A is the pair’s arrival and departure station transfers; D is the actual Dinosaur Museum admission total for both adults. The fixed part contains ¥70 for two published Salt History Museum adult tickets and ¥50 for two listed Shenhai Well adult tickets, plus editorial allowances of ¥480–640 for meals, ¥180–280 for local sightseeing rides and ¥120–180 for drinks and contingency. The Lantern Museum’s general admission is free with reservation.
Example inputs R = ¥300, A = ¥140 and D = ¥100 give ¥2,040–2,360 for the pair. R, A and D are illustrative inputs, not checked hotel, taxi or dinosaur-ticket quotes. Replace D with the dated booking amount and adjust the other two admissions if the actual payable products change.
Exclude intercity fares, shopping, optional guiding, the separate dinosaur theme park and any evening lantern festival. A festival adds its actual tickets, return transport and any changed room rate; it is not hidden inside this museum-trip budget.
Sources and planning conditions
Read on 17 October 2026. The Salt Museum notice supports its published general ticket, not a claim that the short holiday timetable continues. The Dinosaur Museum’s operator-authored reopening notice supplies the two open halls, hours and reservations; Hall 3 reopening was not verified. Lantern Museum rules were read directly on its current site. Shenhai prices and hours come from the named ticket seller and remain a dated purchase check. All visit lengths, room inputs, vehicle allowances and day plans are editorial; no passport booking, meal, hotel or local ride was field-tested.
