Lushan Lakeside walks, cliff views and old villas make a mountain stay; choose the demanding waterfall descent as a separate commitment.
Lushan is a mountain landscape that people have repeatedly made part of cultural life. A lake walk, a cliff path and an old villa are different ways into the same setting. Guling, the hill town, gives the trip a practical centre: you can return for lunch or dinner rather than descending to the plain after every visit. Clouds can hide the long view and make the close landscape more atmospheric, so this stay works better with varied days than a single promised sunrise.
Stay three nights in Guling and use two full days for the western lake-and-valley walks, a daylight Hanpokou view and Meilu’s villa history. Add a fourth night and a third full day if the stair-heavy Sandiequan waterfall is a priority. Xiufeng is a different south-foot outing requiring road transport, even though current admission policy can cover it on the same pass. Choose Jiujiang for riverfront city time; it is a connection and alternative base, not the mountain town itself.

A villa setting that connects the resort landscape to twentieth-century history · Guling’s eastern historic-villa area
Allow about 1 hour for the admitted villa visit · Free timed museum reservation is required under the current tourism-authority notice; core mountain access remains separate.
A high viewpoint towards the lake-and-ridge landscape when visibility permits · Upper eastern scenic route
Allow 1–2 hours at the viewpoint plus the bus journeys · Use core scenic admission and the mountain bus; an optional waterfall ropeway is a different product.
A three-stage waterfall reached by a substantial descent and return climb · A demanding eastern branch; choose upper-side return when staying in Guling
Reserve a separate full day · The published pass covers admission within its validity. Optional Sandiequan rail transport is separately priced.
South-facing peaks, waterfall viewpoints and inscribed cultural surroundings · South foot, in Bailu town; separate from the Guling bus circuit
A separate day with a complete road return · Current ¥160 scenic pass policy covers admission within validity; confirm the date and document. Its ropeway and road travel are extra.
Keep the mountain town and the south foot separate
The numbers match the overview and details: 1 lake/garden, 2 western valley and 3 Meilu use the Guling base; 4 Hanpokou is an upper eastern outing; 5 Sandiequan is the strenuous waterfall branch; 6 Xiufeng requires a separate south-foot road plan. The diagram shows choices, not a continuous walk or a bus timetable.
Guling 牯岭 is on the mountain. Lushan railway station 庐山站 and Jiujiang railway station 九江站 are on the plain and are different stations. Lushan city / 南康 near the southern foot is also different from Guling. Lushan West Sea 庐山西海 is another regional destination and is not included in this mountain stay.
The numbered places
1. Ruqin Lake and Flower Path · 如琴湖 · 花径
Ruqin Lake gives the mountain visit an approachable beginning. Water and planted paths let you slow down after travel, and the town remains within the day rather than beyond another descent to the plain. Take time to look across the lake before deciding whether you want the longer valley route.
Flower Path adds a garden-and-literary register to the walk. Choose it for a measured morning and a nearby lunch, not as a compulsory step before every western attraction. Someone conserving their knees can keep this shorter choice and skip the uneven valley continuation.
Hours
Visit in daylight on the open signed paths. Garden and lakeside sections can have different maintenance boundaries.
Tickets
This is part of the mountain visit, not a reason to buy a second general ticket from a street seller.
Time
1–2 hours is a flexible editorial allowance, longer if you want a quiet lakeside pause.
Chinese address
江西省庐山市牯岭镇 · 如琴湖 / 花径
Getting there
From the Guling base, use the signed local route or a scenic bus stop confirmed by staff. Establish the onward Jinxiu Valley entrance before committing to the longer walk.
How to visit
Take an unhurried lake-and-garden walk. This is the shorter option if you want fresh air without the full valley path; stay on open surfaces and do not treat the whole circuit as verified step-free.
2. Jinxiu Valley and Immortal Cave · 锦绣谷 · 仙人洞
Jinxiu Valley is the more committed western walk. The changing edge of the path makes rock and vegetation part of the experience, with views opening and closing as you move. A useful visit includes pauses rather than treating the whole path as a race to Immortal Cave.
Decide on the actual open route before leaving the lake side. The valley and the town bus system are different components: reaching an exit does not establish an instant taxi. In poor visibility, the forest and close rock may still be interesting, but slippery footing or a closure is a reason to stop.
Hours
Start in daylight after staff confirm the open direction, exit and current last bus. Fog, ice and storm closures can change the usable route.
Tickets
Use your mountain admission and a valid bus ticket if returning by bus. A taxi pickup at every scenic path exit is not assumed.
Time
Allow a half day including the route, rests and return; do not force it between rail arrival and nightfall.
Chinese address
江西省庐山市庐山核心景区 · 锦绣谷 / 仙人洞
Getting there
Enter the currently signed western route and use its official exit towards Immortal Cave if open; identify the assigned return stop with the bus staff before the walk.
How to visit
Enjoy the alternation of cliff views, rock and vegetation, staying inside barriers. There are stairs and uneven sections. If visibility collapses or footing is unsafe, use only a confirmed short open section or return to the lake rather than continuing to a distant exit.
3. Meilu Villa · 美庐别墅
Meilu provides a compact historical contrast with the mountain walks. The villa setting and the displays connect Guling’s resort history to the political use of the mountain in the twentieth century. The wider villa landscape is one of the reasons Lushan is understood as a cultural landscape rather than simply a summit.
Treat the interior as a reserved venue. The current tourism-authority announcement makes the reservation free and recognises passports among valid documents, but that does not certify a completed foreign-passport booking on your device. If the form fails, use the official support channel before building the afternoon around a guaranteed entry.
Hours
Book an available morning or afternoon museum slot and read the venue’s current opening notice; entry stops before closing. Temporary closures override the reservation.
Tickets
In 一机游庐山, select 庐山门票预订 → 文博场馆预约, the date and time period. The authority’s notice accepts valid documents including passports for reservation; keep the matching original and reservation QR.
Time
About 1 hour, with time to reach the gate inside the booked period.
Chinese address
江西省庐山市牯岭镇 · 美庐别墅
Getting there
Use the appropriate signed Guling walk or the bus stop identified for 美庐 by staff. Meilu is an attraction, not a hotel booking or a substitute address for your accommodation.
How to visit
Visit the open rooms and displays during your slot. If the reservation is unavailable, do not promise access based on a mountain ticket: keep a public, open villa-area walk or a rest, or move the slot to the other mountain day.
4. Hanpokou · 含鄱口
Hanpokou is a choice for a longer view, not a guaranteed photograph of the lake. It changes the scale again after the western paths and villa rooms, making the surrounding ridges and plain easier to read when visibility permits. A daylight visit is the reliable default for the transport plan.
Do not turn a missed sunrise into a failed trip. Guling’s mixed itinerary deliberately leaves another kind of experience available when clouds hide the distance. A ropeway sold near the viewpoint is not a shortcut to every other named waterfall.
Hours
Use a daylight visit unless a separately confirmed early transport arrangement supports sunrise. A normal daytime bus ticket is not evidence of a pre-dawn service.
Tickets
The Hanpokou viewpoint and a separate ropeway to another waterfall are different choices. This plan does not purchase the latter or label it Sandiequan.
Time
1–2 hours around the admitted viewpoint, with bus travel and weather delays additional.
Chinese address
江西省庐山市庐山核心景区 · 含鄱口
Getting there
Take the current east-line scenic bus to the Hanpokou stop and follow the signed uphill viewpoint access. Ask for the return bus stop and final departure before leaving it.
How to visit
Look for the relationship between the surrounding ridges and the lake beyond when clear. In dense fog, do not wait indefinitely beside an exposed viewpoint or buy another product expecting it to guarantee a view; return to Guling and use the reserved villa visit.
5. Sandiequan · 三叠泉
Sandiequan earns its place through the changing shape of the falling water, not simply its total drop. The government description identifies three successive stages. The cost in effort is equally real: reaching the viewpoint is only half of an upper-side visit if you must return to Guling.
Give the waterfall a new day rather than adding it after a long ridge climb or an early sunrise. Optional rail transport helps with one section, leaving substantial walking. If the return climb is unsuitable for you, choose the lake, villa and viewpoint days without presenting the omission as a failure to “complete” Lushan.
Hours
Ask the upper-side staff for the current descent cutoff, final return transport and whether both directions are open before starting down. Water and weather can restrict the route.
Tickets
The mountain pass covers admitted access within its conditions. The government’s published optional rail reference is ¥80 return, ¥55 uphill and ¥35 downhill; it does not eliminate all waterfall stairs.
Time
Give it a full day, with a turnaround that leaves adequate time and energy for the climb back. No exact stair count or guaranteed duration is promised.
Chinese address
江西省庐山市 · 三叠泉景区;specify the upper-side approach from Guling
Getting there
Use the scenic bus towards the upper Sandiequan approach; confirm any extra rail boarding and the final walking descent. The default returns by the same upper-side system to Guling and your luggage.
How to visit
Descend only if you can manage the return climb, enjoy the three distinct drops from admitted viewpoints, and keep the climb as part of the visit. Do not simply follow signs out through a lower eastern gate: that puts you outside your upper-mountain return and can strand your luggage.
6. Xiufeng · 秀峰
Xiufeng belongs to the mountain’s southern face. Its waterfall setting, rock inscriptions and temple associations provide another way to understand the landscape. It is not a second name for Sandiequan, nor a paid lift below Hanpokou.
The current pass can make admission already covered, but it does not move the site closer to Guling. For an additional Xiufeng day, transfer with luggage to a south-foot base after the mountain stay, sleep there, visit with a dedicated road return and sleep a second night before departure. If you only want the south-foot waterfall, plan that stay directly and avoid buying a whole mountain itinerary you will not use.
Hours
Confirm the open waterfall-viewing paths, admission period and any ropeway’s final return before leaving the south-foot base. Water volume is seasonal and weather-dependent.
Tickets
Avoid buying a duplicate admission if your valid Lushan pass already covers Xiufeng. If visiting only Xiufeng, obtain its actual separate admission product; no unverified standalone price is supplied here.
Time
Keep a dedicated day with both road legs and pauses. A quick addition to an afternoon Guling visit is not this itinerary.
Chinese address
江西省庐山市白鹿镇 · 秀峰景区
Getting there
Arrange a licensed drive to 秀峰景区 ticket entrance from an actual south-foot / Lushan-city or Jiujiang base, naming the return. This is not a stop reachable by merely staying aboard the Guling east-line bus.
How to visit
Choose the currently open waterfall viewpoints and cultural paths. Ask what walking remains if buying the optional ropeway; no step-free guarantee is made. In very low flow, choose it for the landscape and inscriptions or leave it out, rather than promising a waterfall photograph.
Sleep in Guling for the upper-mountain days
Default: Guling near the central streets and an identified scenic-bus stop. Select a property with a manageable luggage approach, breakfast and dinner nearby. Confirm which station or cableway transfer is supplied and where its vehicle must stop; a property’s mountain address does not guarantee a car can reach its door.
Near the cableway upper station: useful for arrival, provided the room-to-town gradient and bus access suit you. Eastern villa area: choose for atmosphere and a quieter setting, accepting a more specific luggage and meal plan. Jiujiang: better for city services or a late rail arrival, while repeated up-and-down travel makes it a weaker two-day mountain base.
Open Lushan accommodation listings, enter three nights, one room, two adults, then use the map to select 牯岭 / Guling on the mountain. Confirm passport check-in, stairs or lift, heating, cancellation, breakfast, the actual pickup and the walk to a functioning bus stop. Do not select a hotel beside 庐山站 assuming it is in Guling. No named hotel or rate has been tested.
Use Guling for meals and keep the hiking lunch simple
Eat breakfast near the base before the western walk and carry water. For the lake morning, return towards the central streets for lunch before deciding on the valley. For Hanpokou, carry a simple lunch or use an open signed service point, then return for the reserved villa period and a seated dinner. A Sandiequan day needs food before the descent rather than a meal promise at its lowest point.
The local “three stones” are food names, not three vegetarian dishes: 石鱼 is small fish; 石耳 is a rock-growing ingredient often served with meat; 石鸡 refers to a frog, not chicken. Ask what is actually in the dish. For a straightforward shared dinner, choose ordinary chicken or tofu, a vegetable and rice, adding a fish dish only if it suits you. Regional names do not establish a verified supplier, menu or dietary guarantee.
Try 庐山云雾茶, Yunwu green tea, as a calm break near the base. Ask the pot or cup price before ordering and treat any retail tea purchase as separate from a meal. No restaurant, meal, tea tasting or retail quality assessment was field-tested.
A two-day mountain stay, then deliberate extensions
Arrival · night 1 in Guling: reach the mountain in daylight if possible, check in and establish the next morning’s west-line transport. Reserve Meilu’s available museum slot for a visiting day and eat near the hotel. Do not append a demanding waterfall descent to the arrival.
First full day · night 2: start with Ruqin Lake and Flower Path. Add the open Jinxiu Valley–Immortal Cave route if footing and walking capacity suit, leaving time for its return bus and a proper meal. Otherwise retain the lake and a slower Guling afternoon.
Second full day · night 3: take a daylight Hanpokou outing with a confirmed return, eat and reach Meilu within the reserved period. If visibility is poor, move the indoor visit earlier within a valid slot or use a quieter town morning, and attempt the viewpoint only if conditions improve. Depart the following morning after the agreed mountain descent and station transfer.
Sandiequan extension · third full day and night 4: keep bags in Guling. Travel to the upper approach, make the admitted waterfall visit only with enough return capacity, and come back through the same upper-side transport system. Keep this as the day’s major physical task. Depart the next morning. Do not add Wulaofeng or a lower-gate exit by default.
Xiufeng extension · two additional south-foot nights: after the mountain stay, descend and transfer with luggage to a confirmed southern-base hotel. The next full day is for Xiufeng and its road return; sleep again before departure. Check the existing pass’s expiry against that visit, particularly after a longer Guling stay. If it expires, price the actual Xiufeng product rather than assuming free admission.
If you only have one full day, keep the lake and one choice of valley, villa or viewpoint with one mountain base. Attempting both waterfall branches as an efficient shortcut removes the time that makes this itinerary workable.
Choose the station, ascent and mountain bus separately
Use 12306 to compare trains to Lushan 庐山 and Jiujiang 九江 on your date. Then choose an ascent: 庐山交通索道下站 for the cableway, or the 庐山北门 / 南门游客换乘中心 for road ascent. Neither railway station is already Guling.
The government’s visitor information describes a Lushan-station shuttle to a transfer centre, then a paid bus to the lower cableway; for Jiujiang station it identifies bus 57 to the cableway. These establish usable connection names, not a promise that the last bus will meet your train. Ask at the staffed station transport area for the current service or use a licensed taxi to the chosen lower station / transfer centre. Have the hotel confirm the luggage arrangement above.
If choosing cableway ascent, the upper-mountain sightseeing bus still solves a different task. The published bus products are ¥70 without mountain ascent/descent or ¥90 including road ascent/descent, with a seven-day reference validity; cableway return is separately listed at ¥120. Do not buy both road ascent and cableway out of habit if the products duplicate your chosen journey.
At Guling’s signed scenic-bus desks, show the day’s Chinese destinations and confirm boarding direction, any change and the last return. The government explains that 正街 and 慧远路口 have different directional functions; do not assume every stop serves both lines. Published older operating tables contain multiple arrangements, so this guide does not impose a single historical final departure.
Allow a free departure morning for the descent, any queue and the correct station’s check-in. If the cableway is suspended, first establish an operating official road descent and the bus pickup; if roads are also closed, stay at the staffed hotel and rebook the onward journey. A rail ticket is not a reason to enter a closed mountain road.
Admission, buses, cableway and museum slots are different
Use 一机游庐山 on WeChat or Alipay, the platform named in current official notices. Choose the date, two ordinary adults and the 庐山风景区通票. The operator’s published reference is ¥160 per adult, valid for seven days from first checking in its September 2026 notice, covering the core and listed surrounding sites including 三叠泉 and 秀峰. Follow the validity printed on your own order; earlier annual wording used a purchase-date start.
Buy only the transport that matches your ascent and visiting days. Admission does not include the general sightseeing bus, transport cableway, Sandiequan rail ride or a Xiufeng ropeway. If a pass already covers Xiufeng admission, do not buy another admission just because it requires a separate car journey.
For Meilu, make the separate free museum reservation: 庐山门票预订 → 文博场馆预约 → date → morning or afternoon → personal details → successful reservation. The tourism authority’s current notice groups several museums under one reservation and explicitly includes passports as valid documents. Bring the original matching document and QR; a mountain admission alone is not a museum time slot.
The main mountain-pass passport checkout and gate flow were not completed. If its form cannot accept your passport, contact official visitor service +86 400 900 6162 before travelling and establish the manual assistance point for your chosen entry. Do not substitute invented identity-card digits or assume the document support for museum reservation proves every transport product supports the same flow. Keep the order’s unused-ticket refund conditions.
Choose the day by visibility, footing and the return
Use daylight paths, shoes with grip and a layer for cooler mountain conditions. Fog can erase a distant view quickly; reserve the cultural visit and lake day as useful alternatives. Avoid a pre-dawn viewpoint journey unless the transport, admission and safe route have actually been arranged.
Sandiequan is the clearest decision boundary: optional transport does not remove the major stairs or the upper-side return climb. Stop before descending if knees, weather, fatigue or the final service make the return doubtful. The core two-day stay remains a coherent visit without it.
For Xiufeng, distinguish its current waterfall flow and open paths from the fact that admission is covered. A ticket does not guarantee water volume, a running ropeway or a car back to Guling. Use a south-foot base and an explicit return quote, or leave this branch out. Follow closures and never use an undeveloped path to link mountain regions.
A budget for two that does not double-buy the ascent
For two ordinary adults sharing one room, three nights and two full days, using cableway ascent/descent, calculate 3R + 2A + 2B + 2C + T + M + X. Inputs: R = ¥350 room/night; A = ¥160 scenic admission/person; B = ¥70 mountain-only bus/person; C = ¥120 cableway return/person; T = ¥120 station/local connections for the pair; M = ¥620 meals; X = ¥150 water and contingency. The result is ¥1,050 + ¥320 + ¥140 + ¥240 + ¥120 + ¥620 + ¥150 = ¥2,640 for the pair.
For a road-ascent version, replace ¥70 bus + ¥120 cableway per adult with the ¥90 bus including road ascent/descent. With the other illustrative inputs unchanged, the result is ¥2,440 for the pair. Requote the actual station transfers if the chosen lower entry changes. Do not pay for both complete ascent systems unless you deliberately choose a product permitting that combination.
For four nights / three full days including Sandiequan, add an illustrative ¥350 room-night, two optional ¥80 return rail rides, ¥180 meals and ¥60 contingency to the cableway version: ¥3,390 for the pair. If you walk the rail-covered section instead, subtract ¥160 only after deciding that the additional walking is suitable. The waterfall’s main stairs remain either way.
For the south-foot Xiufeng extension, add the actual two room-nights, complete descent / base / scenic road quote, meals, any optional ropeway and any admission required after the pass expiry. Those unknowns are not zero and are outside the worked Guling totals.
Tariffs are published references, not live sales. Rooms, road/local connections, meals and contingency are planning inputs. Exclude intercity fares, guiding, shopping, optional scenic products and the Xiufeng extension. The free Meilu reservation adds no admission charge but still requires a valid slot; it is not an unverified ¥25 add-on.
Source dates and the boundaries of the visit
Sources actually read on 22 October 2026. The government’s core-area page supplies admission and transport references. Its bus page establishes the separate lower entrances and railway connections, while its older timetable remains historical. The September operator notice, carried with the operator’s name by Jiujiang Release, supplies the current seven-day pass wording, coverage and separate transport. The June tourism-authority notice, carried by Dajiang News, establishes the free museum reservation and valid-document rules.
The annual tariff text and the newer operator notice differ on when seven-day validity begins; the current booking and printed expiry must decide your actual extension. Descriptions of Sandiequan, Xiufeng, villas and food were checked against government material; UNESCO supports the cultural-landscape context. No foreign-passport purchase, hotel check-in, gate scan, phone enquiry, bus connection, meal or physical walking route was field-tested.
