JIANGXI · YANGTZE CITY AND MOUNTAIN GATEWAY

Jiujiang Give the river city a day of its own; give Lushan enough time to be a mountain visit.

Jiujiang offers an easy-paced river-city stop: Xunyang Tower connects literature and the Yangtze, while Gantang Lake and Yanshui Pavilion give the centre a quieter waterside rhythm. Choose it for a relaxed day between longer journeys, or as the beginning of a proper stay on Lushan.

One full day and two nights works for the city. For both city and mountain, allow three full days and four nights, with two nights in Jiujiang followed by two in Guling on Lushan. The mountain has its own entrance, transport products and weather. It is not the final attraction on a compact city walking day.

Which places fit your visit?

  1. Start here1. Xunyang Tower and the Yangtze Riverfront · 浔阳楼 · 长江江岸

A literary landmark and a broad river view · Northern edge of central Jiujiang

1–2 hours with a short riverfront walk · Tower interiors have their own admission; the selected public riverfront walk does not require a cruise.

  2. Add by interest2. Gantang Lake and Yanshui Pavilion · 甘棠湖 · 烟水亭

Lake edges, a classical pavilion complex and an easy city pause · Central Jiujiang, south of the riverfront

1½–2 hours with breaks · The plan uses the lakeside; check the pavilion complex’s own admission and opening at its gate.

  3. Start here3. Lushan from Guling · 庐山 · 牯岭

Mountain-town streets, wooded walks and highland scenery · Mountain south of Jiujiang; separate ascent and overnight base

At least two mountain nights for a balanced addition · Published adult scenic admission is ¥160; cableway and sightseeing buses are separate. Use 一机游庐山 for the dated products.

Make the change of base explicit

Not to scale. Riverfront and Gantang Lake are city visits. Lushan/Guling is a separate mountain base reached through a lower station or visitor centre; neither railway station is on the mountaintop. This is an editorial relationship diagram, not a navigation map; box position does not encode distance or an entrance.

Navigation: search the Chinese name in Amap.

City only: one full day and two nights, both near Gantang Lake or the central river-city area. Combine the two urban choices without a hotel move.

City plus Lushan: arrive in Jiujiang for night 1, spend the first full day in the city and stay night 2, ascend on the next day and stay nights 3 and 4 in Guling, then descend on the departure day. The ascent day is partly a transfer day, even if its afternoon is usable.

Choose the city-only version if the forecast makes mountain views unlikely or if the group does not want steps and another hotel move. Mountaintop temperatures and conditions differ from the city; take a layer and rain protection even when the riverfront feels warm.

Central lake for the city; Guling for the mountain

Near Gantang Lake: the default city base for meals and a manageable local taxi ride to the riverfront. Check the actual road entrance and whether a lake-facing room hears road noise.

Jiujiang station: useful for a late arrival or early train, but it is a logistical choice rather than the most atmospheric base. Lushan station is a different railway location; it is not on top of the mountain.

Guling 牯岭: use a hotel with a clear pickup or walking connection from the upper cableway / sightseeing-bus area. Mountain properties can involve slopes and steps. Confirm heating or cooling for your season, room access and passport check-in with the property; avoid an isolated villa if the group needs easy evening meals.

Eat simply around the day’s base

For the city morning, a bowl of Jiangxi-style rice noodles or a simple noodle breakfast is easy to fit before the tower. Ask about chilli before it is mixed in. At lunch choose a cooked fish dish or a small set of shared meat and vegetable dishes from a displayed menu; confirm the unit price before ordering fish by weight.

On the mountain, keep lunch practical near a transport stop or Guling rather than relying on a restaurant deep along a walking route. A hot meal after returning is more useful than carrying a large lunch across steep steps.

Lushan tea can be a pleasant seated break; 九江茶饼 is a local-style sweet biscuit to consider as a small snack or gift. Ask ingredients and buy a small quantity first. These are food ideas, not endorsements of a named shop or a claim of tasting them.

Show the mountain costs separately

For two adults sharing one room, city only, one full day and two nights, use 2R + A + U + ¥460–700. R is the nightly city room quote, A the combined railway transfers, and U the pair’s selected urban attraction tickets. The allowance is ¥280–420 food, ¥80–120 local journeys and ¥100–160 drinks/contingency.

Example R = ¥280, A = ¥100 and U = ¥80 gives ¥1,200–1,440 for the pair. Those are sample inputs, not current room, taxi or tower tariffs. Intercity tickets, shopping, cruises and paid guides are excluded.

For the four-night city-plus-mountain plan, use 2R + 2M + A + U + ¥320 + C + B + G + ¥1,060–1,540. M is the nightly shared Guling room; ¥320 is two published ¥160 scenic admissions; C is both travellers’ return cableway total, B their chosen sightseeing-bus total, and G the combined city-to-lower-station and descent-to-final-station ground transfers. Do not count the same transfer in both A and G.

The four-night allowance is ¥760–1,080 for meals from arrival dinner through departure breakfast, ¥100–160 city local travel and ¥200–300 drinks/contingency. Example R = ¥280, M = ¥400, A = ¥50 for the first arrival, U = ¥80, C = ¥240, B = ¥140 and G = ¥180 gives ¥3,430–3,910 for the pair. C, B and G are editable sample inputs, not verified tariffs. Replace all transport products with dated quotes; special exhibitions and extra paid mountain attractions are excluded.

Two urban visits and a genuine mountain stay

1. Xunyang Tower and the Yangtze Riverfront · 浔阳楼 · 长江江岸

The tower is a useful starting point for the city’s literary identity, especially the stories associated with Water Margin. Its present architecture is a rebuilt landmark, not an untouched survival from the story’s setting. See the tower and the river together: the broad Yangtze helps explain why this place mattered as a meeting point and transport city.

Go inside if the current displays interest you and admission is available, then take a short walk along the permitted riverfront. Suojiang Tower farther along the river is an optional additional landmark, not a requirement to complete this visit. A river cruise is a different paid activity with its own departure and return.

Hours
Use daylight for your first riverfront visit. The tower has separate opening hours; public waterside access can change with river conditions.
Tickets
Tower interiors have their own admission; the selected public riverfront walk does not require a cruise.
Time
1–2 hours with a short riverfront walk
Chinese address
九江市浔阳区浔阳楼;滨江路
Getting there
Take a city taxi or current bus to 浔阳楼. Save a road pickup point before walking along the river.
How to visit
Keep the river walk modest and remain behind barriers. If the tower is closed, use its exterior and the public riverfront, then continue to the lake; do not enter a closed flood-protection area.

2. Gantang Lake and Yanshui Pavilion · 甘棠湖 · 烟水亭

Gantang Lake makes a gentle second part of the city day. Yanshui Pavilion sits in the lake and provides a distinct architectural focus; its association with Zhou Yu belongs to local historical tradition, not proof that today’s buildings date from the Three Kingdoms.

Choose one shore section and a seated stop rather than forcing a full circuit. Combine this with lunch or an early dinner in the surrounding centre. The pavilion interior is an addition when open; the lake can still be worthwhile without it.

Hours
Daylight is easiest for orientation. Follow the pavilion’s own notice and any waterside closures.
Tickets
The plan uses the lakeside; check the pavilion complex’s own admission and opening at its gate.
Time
1½–2 hours with breaks
Chinese address
九江市浔阳区甘棠湖;烟水亭
Getting there
Use a local taxi between Xunyang Tower and the lake if the road walk is tiring or hot. This is a city transfer, not a mountain journey.
How to visit
Walk the accessible lakeside section, visit the pavilion if available, then return to your central hotel. In heavy rain, shorten the outdoor section and keep the meal break.

3. Lushan from Guling · 庐山 · 牯岭

Lushan’s appeal is the shift from river city to mountain: wooded roads, an upland town, garden-like landscapes around Flower Path and Ruqin Lake, and steeper valleys farther away. Guling is the practical mountain base. An arrival afternoon around town and one full walking day gives a much better visit than rushing up and down between trains.

For the western group, take the official sightseeing service to 花径 Flower Path stop, see Ruqin Lake and Flower Path, then return to the stone entrance arch. The signed Jinxiu Valley entrance is opposite; its stepped path leads toward 仙人洞 Xianrendong. Arrange your return to Guling before setting off: have the transport desk identify the service or required change from Xianrendong stop to your hotel area, or agree a licensed pickup. If that return or the valley opening cannot be confirmed, keep to the shorter lake-and-Flower-Path visit and return through the arrival stop. Sandiequan is a different, strenuous outing and does not belong on this day.

Hours
Book a dated admission and check mountain, road and cableway notices. The current cableway notice gives 07:30–18:30; weather or maintenance can override it. Verify the final descent before going up.
Tickets
Published adult scenic admission is ¥160; cableway and sightseeing buses are separate. Use 一机游庐山 for the dated products.
Time
At least two mountain nights for a balanced addition
Chinese address
庐山风景区;牯岭镇;庐山交通索道下站
Getting there
From Jiujiang take a licensed taxi or a confirmed operating coach to 庐山交通索道下站, then the cableway and the appropriate local connection to your Guling hotel. The lower station is not Guling.
How to visit
The operator explicitly offers staffed assistance for passport holders at the south/north visitor centres and lower cableway station. Bring the original passport; if online document entry fails, use that service, not a Chinese-ID workaround. ¥160 scenic admission does not include cableway or sightseeing buses. Keep the return transport product and last descent separately confirmed.

Keep the mountain day free of a tight train connection

Arrival evening · night 1: settle in near Gantang Lake and have dinner. First full day · night 2: visit Xunyang Tower and a short riverfront section in the morning, then lunch and Gantang Lake / Yanshui Pavilion. Return to the hotel for a relaxed evening.

For the city-only plan, depart after breakfast. For the mountain plan, second day · night 3: transfer to the lower cableway station, resolve admission and transport tickets, ascend and check in at Guling. Keep the afternoon to town and a short nearby walk. Do not plan a distant waterfall after the transfer.

Third day · night 4: start at Flower Path stop for Ruqin Lake and Flower Path. If the valley path and your return are confirmed, continue from the entrance opposite Flower Path through Jinxiu Valley to Xianrendong, then use the pre-identified official sightseeing connection or agreed pickup back to Guling. Otherwise return from Flower Path after the shorter lake visit. Leave room for weather, queues and a seated lunch rather than adding Sandiequan.

Departure day: descend early enough for a generous onward buffer and take the booked ground connection to the actual station. If the cableway is suspended, ask the hotel and scenic transport desk for the operating road-shuttle descent to a named south or north visitor centre, then arrange a taxi from that centre. If roads are also closed, remain in Guling, contact your hotel and adjust the train; do not improvise an unofficial path down.

A station name does not put you on the mountain

Compare Jiujiang 九江 and Lushan 庐山 on 12306. Jiujiang is the natural starting search for the city stay. Lushan station may suit an available train or direct mountain approach, but it requires a ground transfer. Neither station is Guling.

The government describes a coach connection from Jiujiang’s coach facilities, including Changhong Yizhan by the railway station, to the lower cableway station. Its historical launch fare is not a checked current timetable or fare. Confirm the actual service before using it; a licensed taxi to 庐山交通索道下站 is the straightforward fallback.

Book scenic admission, ascent/descent transport and mountain sightseeing transport as distinct decisions. The operator’s official notice names 一机游庐山 on WeChat or Alipay and provides passport service windows. Scenic support is 400-900-6162; the cableway’s published customer number is 0792-8296862. These are official contacts, not a claimed English-language or successful phone test.

Ticket facts are separate from field testing

Sources were read on . The mountain operator’s notice supports the ¥160 adult admission, seven-day validity for the holder, passport service windows and separately charged transport. The cableway’s own operating notice supports the stated normal hours, subject to its current notices.

The city route, walking durations, choice of mountain group and budgets are editorial judgments. We did not field-test foreign-passport purchase, hotel registration, bus departures or mountain walking conditions. A scenic admission’s validity does not guarantee that every path is open or that transport is included.
