FUJIAN · OLD LANES, RIVER QUARTERS & JASMINE TEA

Fuzhou Courtyard mornings and riverfront evenings

Fuzhou is a good stop for travellers who like old houses, local food and unhurried neighbourhood walks. Begin in the white-walled lanes around Nanhou Street, then compare the merchant quarter of Shangxiahang with the hillside streets of Yantai Hill across the Min River. Give it two full days and stay near Dongjiekou to cover the main highlights. A third day separates the museum and lake from Yantai Hill for a gentler pace.

Choose Fuzhou for this city life and architectural contrast. Choose Xiamen if a coastal stay is the main aim, or Quanzhou for a denser concentration of maritime religious heritage. Hot, humid days work best with outdoor walks early and late, separated by a museum, meal or hotel break.

Build one to three useful days

One full day: old lanes and the trading quarter

Start around 09:00 in Three Lanes and Seven Alleys. Visit one courtyard, have a fish-ball or noodle lunch, then take a break before travelling to Shangxiahang for a late-afternoon walk and dinner. This gives two distinct parts of Fuzhou without spending the day in transfers. If you arrive after lunch, keep only the old lanes and dinner; do not compress this full-day plan into a layover.

Two full days: add the museum, lake and south bank

Keep the first day above. On the second morning, spend 2–3 hours at Fujian Museum and take a short West Lake walk. Have lunch and a rest, then take a taxi to Yantai Hill for its lanes and an early dinner. Swap days if the museum would fall on a normal Monday closure.

Three full days: slow down, without changing hotels

Separate the museum-and-lake day from Yantai Hill. Give the third morning to a second courtyard or tea shopping near Nanhou Street, then spend the afternoon across the river. This is preferable to tacking on a distant mountain, coastal island or tulou excursion with another long transfer.

If heavy rain or a typhoon disrupts the city: use an open museum or postpone the outdoor circuit. Follow current local closure notices; a sheltered shopfront is not a reason to continue along a closed riverbank or hillside.

Five places and how to use them

1. Three Lanes and Seven Alleys · 三坊七巷

Make this the first visit. Walk Nanhou Street to understand the layout, then turn into a lane: the change from shopfronts to high white walls, dark roof tiles and narrow entrances is the point. A courtyard visit adds the interior scale that an exterior-only walk misses.

For a short stay, choose one open paid house rather than buying every interior. Water Pavilion Theatre is the natural choice for an architectural visit; choose Yan Fu's former residence if modern intellectual history interests you. Leave time to sit down for tea instead of treating the whole district as a queue of photo stops.

Hours
Visit heritage interiors in the daytime; shopping streets and individual houses do not share one opening schedule. Ask the visitor centre which interiors are open before buying.
Tickets
The operator lists Water Pavilion Theatre and Xiaohuanglou at CNY 20 each, Yan Fu's residence at CNY 15, and a CNY 70 combined ticket. Buy only the interiors you plan to visit; the combined ticket is not required for the street walk.
Time
2–3 hours including one interior and a tea stop.
Chinese address
福州市鼓楼区南后街,三坊七巷;游客中心:南后街139号。
Getting there
Use Dongjiekou / 东街口 for the northern approach, or a taxi to the visitor-centre approach on Nanhou Street. Cars cannot deliver you through every pedestrian lane.
How to visit
Northern Nanhou Street → one or two side lanes → chosen courtyard → southern lanes and lunch. Return to a road outside the pedestrian district for a taxi.

2. Shangxiahang · 上下杭

This is a different Fuzhou from the scholarly courtyards of Three Lanes and Seven Alleys. Follow the canal and the streets around Shanghang Road and Xiahang Road, looking for the taller merchant buildings and the meeting of Chinese and overseas architectural details.

Late afternoon is the useful compromise: you can see the façades before dark and stay for dinner as the area lights up. Make the canal walk the plan; boat rides, performances and access to individual guildhalls are optional extras, not prerequisites.

Hours
Late afternoon through dinner is the recommended visiting window. Shops, exhibition rooms and restaurants keep their own hours.
Tickets
This itinerary uses the public streets and canal banks. Check the displayed charge before taking a boat or entering a separately operated exhibition; no cruise ticket is needed for this walk.
Time
1½–2 hours, then dinner.
Chinese address
福州市台江区上下杭历史文化街区,上杭路、下杭路、三捷河。
Getting there
Take a taxi to 上下杭历史文化街区 and walk from the roadside approach. From the northern old city, use transport between districts rather than spending the whole afternoon walking the connecting roads.
How to visit
Shanghang Road → canal and bridges → Xiahang Road → dinner → roadside taxi pickup. Keep the riverbank outing for the same evening if you still want to walk.

3. Yantai Hill · 烟台山

Choose Yantai Hill for the contrast between leafy residential slopes, overseas-influenced buildings and a busy contemporary café district. The older lanes around Lequn Road and Aiguo Road repay a slower look; the commercial streets below are better for a meal or drink.

The trade-off is walking on slopes and steps. With limited walking capacity, stay near the lower Cangqian Road area, choose one café and the river view, and skip the uphill circuit. Historic façades are part of the walk, but a church or former consulate is not automatically a public interior.

Hours
Plan the older lanes in daylight, then descend for food. Follow local signs for park-gate and individual-building hours.
Tickets
The city heritage authority confirms free access to Yantai Hill Park. Shops, exhibitions and dining venues have their own terms.
Time
2–3 hours with a café stop.
Chinese address
福州市仓山区烟台山历史风貌区,乐群路、爱国路、仓前路。
Getting there
Taxi to the lower Cangqian Road approach; save the exact drop-off for the return. This is Fuzhou's 烟台山, not Yantai city in Shandong.
How to visit
Lower commercial streets → Lequn Road → a short Aiguo Road loop → descend to Cangqian Road for dinner and pickup. Shorten the loop in heat or heavy rain.

4. Fujian Museum · 福建博物院

This is the best indoor addition to the old-city walk. Start with the regional history displays that are open, then choose a craft, art or natural-history gallery according to your interests. Do not build the visit around a particular famous object: collections and temporary exhibitions rotate.

The lake and museum form one geographic outing, but the museum needs its own attention. Visit the galleries first, while you are fresh, and use the lake as a shorter break afterwards. On a rainy day, keep the galleries and replace the lake walk with a long lunch.

Hours
Published regular hours: Tuesday–Friday 09:00–18:00, last entry 17:30; weekends and statutory holidays 09:00–20:00, last entry 19:30. Normally closed Monday except statutory holidays. Holiday notices can change the pattern.
Tickets
General admission is free, with separately advertised charges possible for special exhibitions. The provincial authority says no reservation is required; bring your passport for any entrance identity check.
Time
2–3 hours; add about an hour for a short lake walk.
Chinese address
福州市鼓楼区湖头街96号,福建博物院。
Getting there
Taxi to 福建博物院,湖头街96号. Visit from the museum side of West Lake rather than arriving at a distant park gate with luggage.
How to visit
Museum entrance and security → regional-history display → one further gallery → West Lake or lunch → hotel. If the museum is closed, move this visit to another day and use the old streets instead.

5. West Lake Park · 西湖公园

Use Fuzhou's West Lake as a restorative part of the day, rather than expecting Hangzhou's much larger lake landscape. Choose a short shore-and-bridge loop, stop in the shade, and turn back when you have had enough walking.

It works well with Fujian Museum or as an early-morning outing from a Gulou hotel. You do not need to rent a boat or complete a perimeter circuit to enjoy it.

Hours
Use daylight for this short walk and follow the opening information at the gate. Avoid waterside paths during severe weather.
Tickets
The city Gardens Bureau confirms free admission to ordinary city parks. Boats and other optional services are separate.
Time
45–90 minutes.
Chinese address
福州市鼓楼区西湖公园;湖滨路一侧或福建博物院一侧入口。
Getting there
Combine with the adjacent museum. For a park-only trip, show the driver 西湖公园,福州 and agree which gate to use.
How to visit
Chosen gate → short lakeside loop and bridge views → return to the same gate, or finish at the museum side if you have planned the connection.

Stay in Gulou for a first visit

Default: Dongjiekou / 东街口, on the edge of Three Lanes and Seven Alleys. You can walk to the first morning's sights, find food without another journey, and use Line 1 for railway connections. Choose a hotel on a vehicle-accessible street if you have heavy luggage; a picturesque lane address can mean a final walk.

Choose Nanmendou / 南门兜 if the hotel and fare suit you better. It remains central, with access to the southern end of the old-city area. Choose Cangshan near Yantai Hill for café evenings and a slower south-bank stay, accepting an extra river crossing for the northern sights.

For a normal sightseeing stay, do not book by the distant airport simply because the listing says “Fuzhou.” In your booking service, search Fuzhou + Dongjiekou, use the map to check the actual entrance, and select your dates, room type and bed arrangement. This is an area recommendation, not a claim that a particular hotel room has been checked or reserved.

Reach the centre and keep transfers simple

From Fuzhou Changle Airport / 福州长乐国际机场

The Binhai Express / 滨海快线 now serves the airport. Take a train toward Fuzhou Railway Station / 福州火车站; at that station change to Metro Line 1 for Dongjiekou. CNY 17 is the published airport–railway-station reference fare; select Dongjiekou as the final destination to see the complete fare. Express and stopping trains have different stopping patterns, so use the platform display rather than assuming every train is the fastest service. Operation information · fare.

The updated Terminal 1 connection uses the airport station's B exit and a signed link to terminal door 6. Follow your terminal's current rail signs; the original opening-day directions to door 12 are outdated. With heavy luggage, a late arrival or a hotel far from rail, take a licensed taxi from the airport rank using the saved Chinese hotel address. Do not plan around a last train without checking that day's station information.

Arriving by train

Fuzhou / 福州站 and Fuzhou South / 福州南站 are different stations. Line 1 connects both with the central city; choose the train for your actual origin, departure time and hotel, and keep the booked station name on your departure plan. A ticket to Fuzhou South does not mean the older central Fuzhou station.

Within Fuzhou

Walk inside each historic quarter and use metro or taxi between quarters. Line 1 is useful for the north–south city axis. For a first airport trip, the railway-station interchange keeps the change to Line 1 inside the network; the Binhai Express and Line 1 stations both named Sanchajie require an outside transfer under the published interchange guidance. Buy a single journey at the station if your phone payment is not set up, and ask staff for help with the destination.

Build meals around Fuzhou's own flavours

A simple first lunch: order 鱼丸 / yuwan in soup and a small noodle dish near Nanhou Street. Fuzhou fish balls commonly have a meat filling inside the fish paste. 肉燕 / rouyan is another local meat-based dumpling; neither is a vegetarian choice. Ask about pork, seafood and the broth rather than judging from the wrapper.

For a fuller meal: try 捞化 / laohua, a noodle-soup meal with selected toppings, or share cooked fish, vegetables and rice. Shrimp sauce and red rice lees are characteristic flavours; tell staff if you avoid shellfish or alcohol-derived seasonings. At a shop with a displayed menu, confirm the topping price before ordering.

Jasmine tea is the easy afternoon choice. Sit down for a pot in the old lanes or buy a small quantity after tasting. For 佛跳墙 / Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, treat it as a planned splurge: ask for the ingredient list, per-person or whole-pot price, and whether it must be ordered ahead. It is a rich mixed-ingredient dish, not the default low-cost lunch.

Keep lunch beside the morning's sights and choose dinner in Shangxiahang or lower Yantai Hill. Useful request: 请给我看有价格的菜单。我不吃___。这道菜里有猪肉、虾或贝类吗? — Please show me a priced menu. I do not eat ___. Does this dish contain pork, shrimp or shellfish?

Continue through Fujian

Quanzhou is the strongest contrast for temples and maritime history; Xiamen adds a coastal base and the separate Gulangyu ferry decision. Wuyishan adds mountain scenery and tea country, with its own overnight base. Use the Fujian guide to choose the next stop, then search the exact railway stations on China Railway 12306. Keep the sightseeing day in Fuzhou separate from a long onward transfer.
