Wuyishan Build the trip around the river, then choose your walks
Stay in Sangu for three nights if you can: two usable days let you fit a Nine-Bend River raft around weather and still walk through the tea valleys. With two nights, protect one full day for the raft and Tianyou Peak; drop the extra climbs before you sacrifice the river or a relaxed return.
- Best base
- Sangu / 三姑度假区; save the exact hotel entrance
- Useful stay
- 2 nights for the essentials; 3 for tea walks and flexibility
- Book first
- Your actual raft session and a suitable room, then fit walks around them
- Walking
- Steep stairs at Tianyou and Huxiao; the raft still requires boarding steps
Six visits, three choices
This guide covers the classic Wuyishan scenic cluster around Nine-Bend River and Sangu. It is a mountain region, not a compact city sightseeing loop. These six choices cover the river, summit views, tea landscape and a cultural pause; they do not attempt to count every rock as a separate attraction. The much larger national park, Tongmu tea country and remote forest areas need their own access and transport plans.
The first-visit pair
Choose the raft for the water-level view, Tianyou for the panorama. Combine only around a confirmed raft session.
- 1. Nine-Bend River raft 九曲溪竹筏
The essential water-level view, without a summit climb.
Allow half a day with transfer, check-in and the river trip · Xingcun upstream → Wuyi Palace downstream
- 2. Tianyou Peak 天游峰
The classic elevated river panorama, earned by sustained stairs.
2½–4 hours for the walking visit, plus gate transfers · Central scenic area, above the river bends
Give the stay another texture
Tea valleys reward a second usable day. The palace is a gentler landing-day or post-raft choice.
- 3. Dahongpao & the rock-tea valley 大红袍·岩骨花香慢游道
Tea plots, narrow rock valleys and a different rhythm from the summit stairs.
1½–2 hours for a shorter return; 3–4 hours for the longer tea walk · Northern scenic area, toward Water Curtain Cave
- 4. Wuyi Palace & Song Street 武夷宫·宋街
A gentler cultural finish after the raft, with Dawang Peak above it.
1–1½ hours; longer if an open exhibition interests you · Eastern edge, at the raft arrival end
Add only if the terrain suits you
Extra steep stairs or a confined rock passage are choices, not obligations.
- 5. Tiger Roar Rock 虎啸岩
A second steep-stair outing for confident walkers who want more rock scenery.
2–3 hours for the walking visit, plus transfers · Southern scenic area
- 6. One-Line Sky 一线天
A narrow cleft through the rock, for visitors comfortable in confined spaces.
45–90 minutes; a bottleneck can add a queue · Southern scenic area, a separate stop from Huxiao
Keep the river ends and the hotel side separate
Sangu is the sleeping and dining base east of the main scenic walks. The raft starts upstream at Xingcun and finishes by Wuyi Palace. Tianyou occupies the central area; Dahongpao and the longer tea trail are farther north; Huxiao and One-Line Sky form a southern choice. The scenic-bus network handles the spread, with walking inside each stop.
Do not measure a mountain walk from this map or ask a taxi to drive to a peak. Show the Chinese visitor stop in the relevant entry below. At the gate, identify the bus stop for the next visit and the bus back to the exit nearest your agreed hotel pickup.
Two nights or three?
| Choice and time | Plan and conditions |
|---|---|
| One day, already nearby: | choose #1 plus #4, or #2 plus a short #3. Do not rely on a same-morning intercity arrival to catch an early raft. With no raft reservation, make the walking choice before buying transport. |
| Two nights: | arrive and settle into Sangu; use the full day for Tianyou and a confirmed raft, with lunch and transfers between them. The raft session controls the order. On departure morning choose a short Dahongpao return only if your train leaves ample time, otherwise have tea in Sangu. Drop #5 and #6. |
| Three nights — our default: | arrival and dinner; one day for #2 and #1/#4; a second day for the longer #3 tea walk. Keep its afternoon easy or select one southern stop if everyone still wants it. Swap the two outdoor days around the actual raft session and weather; a cancelled booking does not automatically transfer to another day. |
| Limited stairs or travelling with small children: | three nights still helps. Use a suitable, operating raft and a short palace visit on one day, then a short Dahongpao out-and-back with frequent pauses on another. Skip Tianyou, Huxiao and the confined cleft if they do not fit the party. No complete step-free circuit has been verified. |
Do not stack both steep climbs into the core day. A morning summit can run late because of queues, tired knees or the descent. If the raft is early, take it first and decide later whether Tianyou still fits; if not, use Wuyi Palace and move the climb to another day. A train departure is a reason to cut a visit, not to shorten the check-in margin.
Sleep in Sangu, with the bed you actually need
For this itinerary choose Sangu resort district / 三姑度假区, rather than a room selected only because its address says “Wuyishan.” A city-centre or railway-area room serves a different purpose. Nanyuanling / 南源岭 can suit an entrance-focused stay, but adds a separate transfer if you want Sangu dinners. Staying at Xingcun makes sense mainly when an operator-confirmed early boarding plan outweighs the convenience of the eastern base.
Wuyi Mountain Yuehua Resort / 武夷山悦华酒店
Address: 福建省武夷山市三姑度假区大王峰南路11号. This is the practical starting shortlist for a resort stay with several room configurations. The property listing shows Tian Feng Tower Superior Twin with two single beds, Tian Feng Tower Superior Double with one queen, and Xin Yue Tower Deluxe Family with two singles plus a sofa bed. Select the exact tower and room; a “family” label alone can still mean one queen.
The listing states that guests from all countries and regions are welcome. Confirm your passport details, the actual number and ages of guests, sofa-bed preparation if relevant, and any extra-person charge in the chosen reservation. Save the booking's reception entrance for both arrival and evening pickup. The listing is not a site inspection or a promise of every room's view.
Hampton by Hilton Wuyi Mountain Sangu Scenic Area / 武夷山三姑度假区希尔顿欢朋酒店
Address: 福建省武夷山市天游峰路22号1幢. A second shortlist for a straightforward hotel stay with breakfast: the official Hilton page lists hot breakfast and shows a Superior King with one king bed and a Superior Twin with two twin beds. Request the twin when two people need separate beds; do not interpret “double occupancy” as two beds.
Hilton marks the property as newly built. Confirm opening and room availability for your stay, foreign-passport registration, child occupancy and any late arrival directly at +86 599 619 5999. We have not completed a booking or checked in here. Choose Yuehua if you need a family configuration this listing does not explicitly offer, rather than assuming an extra bed will be added.
Before paying: obtain a dated total including breakfast and taxes, cancellation terms, correct beds and the Chinese reception address. Request a room away from roads or event spaces if sensitive to noise, without treating that request as a guarantee. Arrange the station or airport transfer to this exact hotel; “Sangu” is not a sufficient final destination.
Separate scenic entry, buses and the raft
Use the scenic operator's official website or its 中国武夷山 WeChat channel, also named in the national forestry visitor guide. The guide identifies on-site sales at the north and south entrances, but that is not a guarantee of walk-up raft stock. Ask scenic visitor service at +86 599 513 5110 for the current product; the operator's English site also publishes +86 599 513 4010.
The raft fare reference is CNY 130 per person per trip. The provincial decision, effective 15 October 2021, specifies this Xingcun-to-Wuyi-Palace service and independent sale. It does not prove current seat stock, child eligibility, a bus inclusion or a foreign-passport checkout. Compare the issued product line by line: scenic admission, bus validity and raft date/session. Older “free scenic entry” promotions do not establish free buses or rafting, or a continuing exemption for your dates.
- Choose the real visit days and the actual raft passengers. Ask which product covers those days, which gate to enter, how long bus access lasts, and whether re-entry is allowed. Secure the raft session before making a rigid walking order.
- For an ordinary foreign passport, confirm the exact channel before payment. We did not verify a successful foreign-passport checkout or the current product's accepted-document list. Ask whether its identity selector accepts 护照 / Passport, how to enter the name, and which original document must be shown. Never fill an ID-only box with an invented mainland number.
- If the online product cannot handle your document, ask for its authorised manual route. Obtain the staffed counter or supplier name, whether a reservation must already exist, collection deadline and payment method. Ask your hotel to make the call if needed. “Come to the gate” is not enough when a particular raft session matters.
- Keep the confirmation and original passport together. Check session, check-in location, late-arrival terms and cancellation/refund rules before buying. Confirm child, mobility or other participation conditions for the actual party; rules from another river's bamboo raft do not apply here.
A weather cancellation needs a response from the seller that issued the ticket. Keep its notice and order details; do not assume an automatic new session or a refund of unrelated hotels and trains. Daily gate, bus and raft hours were not established from a readable current operator timetable, so this guide does not invent a universal opening time or advance-booking window.
1. Nine-Bend River raft 九曲溪竹筏
The raft is the easiest way to make the cliffs feel large: you look up from the water as successive bends reveal another face of the rock. It is a one-way seated river experience, not a boat that returns you to the car park. The visitor guide confirms the downstream sequence from Xingcun to Wuyi Palace.
Keep valuables dry, follow crew instructions and wear the provided safety equipment as directed. Comfortable sitting does not remove the need to step onto and off the raft; anyone unsure about boarding should settle assistance and eligibility before buying. Do not promise a particular language of commentary unless it is explicitly included in your product.
If the raft is sold out, use Tianyou for a river panorama when the climb is suitable, then the palace area and a tea walk. If bad river conditions stop the raft, they may also make riverside paths unsuitable: choose an open inland or indoor alternative after local advice, not an unofficial boat.
- Time
- Allow half a day with transfer, check-in and the river trip (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Travel for the session printed on your issued ticket, allowing its required check-in margin. The day's departures depend on operation and water conditions; no fixed first or last sailing is promised here.
- Tickets
- The provincial fare decision sets CNY 130 per person per trip for 星村→武夷宫 and requires raft tickets to be sold separately from scenic admission. Confirm the current total, date, session, passenger eligibility and cancellation conditions through the official booking route. Scenic entry or a bus pass alone does not reserve a raft seat.
- Address
- 福建省武夷山市星村镇九曲溪竹筏码头(上筏点) → 武夷宫竹筏码头(下筏点). Show 九曲溪竹筏上筏码头(星村) for departure; 武夷宫 is the arrival end.
- Getting there
- From your Sangu hotel, arrange the operator-confirmed route to Xingcun: the correct scenic-bus connection if included, or a booked car to the permitted drop-off. Ask where passenger validation occurs before taking a direct car; “the pier” and a road entrance need not be the same stop.
- Visit and return
- Hotel → confirmed Xingcun check-in and boarding point → downstream raft → Wuyi Palace landing → #4 if you still want a short visit → signed exit or scenic-bus connection → the same Sangu hotel. Do not ask a driver to wait at Xingcun for your return unless you have separately arranged transport back there.
2. Tianyou Peak 天游峰
Tianyou is the main panorama choice. The official park profile places it above the northern side of the sixth bend, with a high viewing pavilion and layered peaks around the river. Its appeal is the changing view during the ascent as much as the final photograph.

Choose it on the clearest suitable morning, with water and shoes that grip. The stairs are the experience's main constraint: a modest summit height does not mean an easy walk. Give the descent enough time, especially if knees are less comfortable going down. Someone who stops at the lower approach has still made a valid choice; there is no reason for the entire party to chase the top before a raft appointment.
- Time
- 2½–4 hours for the walking visit, plus gate transfers (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Use the first practical morning entry after the gate opens. Ask staff for the open ascent/descent direction and the last bus back before starting. Cloud and rain can remove the view or make the stairs a poor choice.
- Tickets
- Scenic-area entry and the transport product appropriate to your visit day; a raft reservation is separate. Check the current package and validity in Tickets and passports. This plan relies on walking, not a cable-car shortcut.
- Address
- 福建省武夷山市武夷山风景名胜区天游峰景点入口. Travel to 天游峰景点车站 inside the scenic transport system; the summit pin is not a taxi drop-off.
- Getting there
- Sangu hotel → confirmed scenic visitor gate, normally the south-side approach for this plan → scenic bus signed for 天游峰 → trail entrance. Use the day's staff directions if bus routing changes.
- Visit and return
- Trail entrance → lower river and cliff approach → signed stair ascent → viewpoint if time and legs permit → posted descent route → Tianyou stop → bus to your exit gate → taxi or booked pickup → the same hotel. Confirm the descent before climbing; do not push back against a signed one-way flow.
3. Dahongpao & the rock-tea valley 大红袍·岩骨花香慢游道
This is the best addition to the headline river views. Tea bushes occupy small plots below the cliffs; the shape of the land, shade and enclosed valleys become more memorable than a shop label. The well-known mother-tree viewing area is a pause within that landscape, not a reason to rush the whole walk.

The published tea-tourism route describes roughly five kilometres between Water Curtain Cave and Dahongpao, via Tianchejia, Huiyuankeng and Liuxiangjian. Our longer option uses that corridor in the opposite direction only when staff confirm it is open. Allow a half-day with the bus connections. Water Curtain Cave is a cliff-and-waterfall end of the walk, not a promise of a large waterfall in every season.
For a shorter day, visit the Dahongpao approach and viewing area, then turn back to the same stop. It retains the tea-and-rock contrast without committing to another exit. Keep to the public path and do not step through cultivated rows for a photograph. This route does not include access to Tongmu, a tea factory or a private tasting.
- Time
- 1½–2 hours for a shorter return; 3–4 hours for the longer tea walk (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Begin a through-walk in the morning with both ends open. Ask at entry whether the connection toward 水帘洞 is open and which stop serves its exit. A trail description is not a current closure bulletin.
- Tickets
- Confirm scenic entry and the bus product for Dahongpao and, if used, the Water Curtain Cave end. A tea tasting or purchase is separate and optional. No access to a private tea plot or factory is implied.
- Address
- 福建省武夷山市武夷山风景名胜区大红袍景点(九龙窠); longer walk toward 水帘洞. Use 大红袍景点车站, not 印象大红袍剧场 in Sangu.
- Getting there
- Hotel → staff-confirmed scenic gate and bus to 大红袍. The northern gate can suit this area, but settle the actual bus connection and final exit before leaving your hotel.
- Visit and return
- Dahongpao stop → tea plots and mother-tree viewing area → either return to the same stop, or follow the open 岩骨花香 path via 流香涧 and 慧苑坑 toward 水帘洞 → its signed bus stop → agreed gate → the same Sangu hotel. Do not arrange an immediate pickup at Dahongpao if choosing the through-walk.
4. Wuyi Palace & Song Street 武夷宫·宋街
Use this as a slower finish rather than a second big attraction to conquer. The operator describes a cluster of cultural displays, gardens and the Song-style street below Dawang Peak. The contrast with the open river is the point: pause in the open palace grounds, look into the exhibitions that are admitting visitors, and leave room for tea.
Song Street is a visitor street, not a claim that every building is an untouched Song-dynasty original. It suits a short browse after the raft; it need not consume an entire afternoon if shopping is not your interest. Ask prices before a tea session and choose only the open rooms that appeal to you.
- Time
- 1–1½ hours; longer if an open exhibition interests you (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Use daytime for the palace, gardens and exhibitions; their rooms can close before outdoor public approaches. Ask the local desk which interiors are open. Evening shops do not establish evening access to the cultural buildings.
- Tickets
- Check which palace-area spaces your current scenic product covers and whether a particular exhibition has separate admission. Shops, meals and tea are optional purchases; do not pay a guide merely to follow a public street.
- Address
- 福建省武夷山市武夷宫路一带,武夷宫、宋街(九曲溪下筏端). Show 武夷宫; it is separate from the Xingcun raft departure.
- Getting there
- Arrive from #1 on foot along the signed landing exit, or use the confirmed visitor approach to 武夷宫 from Sangu. Private cars should use the permitted drop-off; do not assume they can drive to an internal bus stop.
- Visit and return
- Landing or visitor approach → palace/garden spaces that are open → Song Street → signed exit and agreed permitted pickup → the same hotel. Dawang Peak is the backdrop; climbing it is not included in this short, lower-effort plan.
5. Tiger Roar Rock 虎啸岩
Huxiao supplies more steep rock and stair-based walking. Choose it after you know how the party feels about Tianyou, not as an automatic companion climb. It has most value for someone who actively wants another challenging walking block; a tea valley or long lunch makes more sense for tired legs.
On a dry day, follow the marked circuit and keep a generous descent margin. On wet stairs or with a fear of exposure, skip it. The closeness of #6 on a regional map does not prove a quick connecting path is open; the conservative combination is a confirmed scenic-bus transfer.
- Time
- 2–3 hours for the walking visit, plus transfers (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Choose a dry, clear daylight window and obtain the current signed circuit and last exit bus before starting. Skip it when steps are wet, visibility is poor or a member of the party has had enough climbing.
- Tickets
- Scenic entry and the appropriate scenic-bus product. Confirm today's route separately from the ticket; purchase does not establish that every stair section is open.
- Address
- 福建省武夷山市武夷山风景名胜区虎啸岩景点入口. Use 虎啸岩景点车站 for the internal bus, not the peak pin for a road pickup.
- Getting there
- Sangu hotel → confirmed visitor gate → scenic bus to 虎啸岩. Keep this as its own walking block instead of squeezing it between Tianyou and a raft check-in.
- Visit and return
- Huxiao stop → the marked open visitor circuit → signed descent → Huxiao stop, or another staffed exit only if confirmed in advance → scenic bus to the agreed gate → hotel. The default plan does not require an unverified cross-trail to #6.
6. One-Line Sky 一线天
The attraction is the slit of daylight above a narrow rock passage. It offers a completely different scale from the open panorama, but also a different discomfort: darkness, tight space, damp footing and possible queues. Anyone who dislikes enclosed passages can skip it without losing the essence of Wuyishan.
Judge the opening and the queue before committing; do not squeeze into a route that feels wrong for you or your bags. A small footprint does not make it suitable for a wheelchair or stroller. Agree where to meet outside if only part of the group enters, and preserve the last bus margin.
- Time
- 45–90 minutes; a bottleneck can add a queue (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Daylight, while the staffed route is open. Ask about queue and surface conditions before entering the narrow section. Turn this into a short look at the outside approach if the passage does not suit your party.
- Tickets
- Confirm inclusion in the current scenic admission and bus product. It is not an independent raft excursion, and a short distance does not make the passage accessible to every visitor.
- Address
- 福建省武夷山市武夷山风景名胜区一线天景点入口. Use 一线天景点车站 and follow visitor signs to the cleft.
- Getting there
- Scenic bus to 一线天 from the confirmed gate, or a confirmed bus connection after #5. Ask the driver for the stop rather than following a straight line between the two map pins.
- Visit and return
- Bus stop → staffed visitor approach → open designated cleft route if comfortable → signed exit → One-Line Sky bus stop → scenic gate → the same hotel. Keep a meeting point outside for anyone skipping the confined section.
From the right station or airport to your bed
Check the Chinese station name on your ticket. Wuyishan North / 武夷山北站 and Nanping City / 南平市站 are different railway arrivals on opposite sides of this trip. Compare the actual train and onward transfer together; neither is the hotel district. Do not substitute another “Nanping” or “Wuyishan” map result.
| Choice and time | Plan and conditions |
|---|---|
| Nanping City / 南平市站: | for luggage, a family or a late arrival, prearrange a car to your named Sangu reception, giving train number and the exact station. For a public-transport alternative, the provincial transport authority documents the tram connection to Nanyuanling / 南源岭. Check today's operation at the station, then continue by taxi or a confirmed local connection to Sangu; the tram terminus is not your hotel. Do not reuse the 2022 opening-day timetable as a current last departure. |
| Wuyishan North / 武夷山北站: | use the station's official taxi queue or an agreed hotel transfer to the Sangu address. If choosing a bus, obtain the current destination, stop and luggage arrangements at the station; no specific route frequency or last departure was verified for this guide. For an evening arrival, the direct car is the simpler plan. |
| Wuyishan Airport / 武夷山机场: | follow arrivals to official ground transport, or meet a prearranged driver at the agreed terminal point. The airport operator lists taxis and local transport toward the scenic area; its undated fares and bus details are not a current quote. Show the full Sangu hotel address, leave bags at reception and confirm next morning's scenic gate before going to bed. |
Build the return before the final walk. Ask your hotel or driver for a departure time that covers the exact station or airport, current road conditions, luggage collection and the carrier's check-in requirement. Keep the final day local to that plan. A raft or remote tea-trail exit shortly before an intercity departure leaves no useful recovery margin.
Rain, walking ability and the point to stop
Light rain with open paths: shorten the outing to a suitable Dahongpao return or the palace's open cultural spaces. Neither is an all-indoor attraction. Heavy rain, lightning, flood warnings or closures: stay out of the mountain and riverside routes; have tea or lunch in Sangu and follow the operator's reopening notice. A waterproof jacket does not solve a closure.
- Before climbing: identify the day's exit, final usable bus and a turnaround that allows the full descent plus waiting time. Use the earliest limit, including your raft check-in or return car. Do not start a late Tianyou ascent for sunset.
- Before the long tea walk: confirm the far exit and bus. If the connection is unclear, take the Dahongpao out-and-back. Do not continue toward Water Curtain Cave simply because a saved map draws a path.
- When someone tires: cut Huxiao first, then One-Line Sky. Keep a shorter cultural or tea visit. Stairs, damp surfaces and boarding steps mean that “less climbing” still needs an individual mobility check.
- If the raft is unavailable: use Tianyou only if the weather and climbing ability fit; otherwise select an open palace visit and a pre-agreed tea tasting. You do not need a replacement boat to have a worthwhile stay.
Carry water, a snack, shoes with grip, a light rain layer and a charged phone. Leave large luggage at the hotel. Hot, humid weather makes a morning walking block and a shaded or seated afternoon more comfortable; cooler weather still needs a layer on the river. Ask the hotel for the local forecast and the operator for closures: they answer different questions.
Tea and dinner belong in the plan
Reserve an unhurried Sangu tea stop instead of trying to buy after a rushed mountain exit. Ask to taste a modestly priced Wuyi rock oolong / 武夷岩茶, such as Dahongpao, and compare it with a local black tea / 红茶 if offered. Agree whether the tasting is free, paid or credited against a purchase before sitting down. You can enjoy the experience without buying a large box.
For a purchase, ask for tea type, harvest or production information, net weight and the total price. Compare the price per 50 g or 100 g, not the size of the gift box. A romantic mountain-origin story or a “mother-tree” label is not authentication; do not pay for rarity you cannot assess.
For dinner around Sangu Street / 三姑街 or near your hotel, choose a place displaying a priced menu. The published local food selection includes red-eye fish / 红眼睛鱼, old-duck soup / 老鸭汤, bamboo shoots and mushroom dishes. For fish sold by weight, settle weight, unit price and cooking charge before ordering. Ask which vegetables can be cooked without meat stock, pork or lard when that matters.
After a long walk, a simple combination of rice, a vegetable dish, soup and one shared main is more useful than chasing every speciality. Say 少辣,辣椒另放 for less chilli served separately; explain allergies specifically and confirm the answer. Pack a snack for the park so a closed stall does not force a missed raft session.
Budget for the chosen route, not every add-on
Price the trip as room × nights + station/airport transfers + scenic admission/transport for the actual days + one raft seat per eligible passenger + meals. CNY 130 is the published raft reference, not a complete Wuyishan day budget. Current scenic admission, bus validity, promotions, hotels and vehicle quotes must come from the dated product or provider.
If money is tight, share the road transfer, compare twin-room totals with breakfast, and choose one substantial walking block per day. If time is tight, remove the southern extras and the long tea crossing. If weather is the problem, preserve a usable spare period rather than buying more non-refundable attractions. A show, private guide, tea purchase or upgraded room view is optional, not required to make the core visit work.
Continue through Fujian
Use the Fujian overview to decide whether this mountain stay fits a wider trip. A coastal base such as Xiamen changes the pace; plan it as a separate rail-and-hotel leg. Leave Wuyishan's last morning flexible until you have selected the actual departing station and train.
For the practical setup, use our train-booking guide and hotel check-in guide. A room, rail ticket and scenic ticket have separate identity and cancellation processes.
