ZHEJIANG · ISLAND TEMPLES, SAND AND A WORKING HARBOUR

Zhoushan Give Putuo its own day, then slow down on Zhujiajian’s coast and at Shenjiamen’s fishing harbour.

Zhoushan is a group of islands with different reasons to visit. Putuo Mountain offers a living Buddhist pilgrimage landscape; Zhujiajian gives you broad beaches and sand sculpture; Shenjiamen adds the boats and waterfront food of a working fishing harbour. Choose these together for a short introduction to the coast, with one accommodation base and one planned ferry day.

Allow two full days and three nights, based on Zhujiajian. Put Putuo on the first suitable full day and keep the other for Nansha and Shenjiamen. The extra night after sightseeing avoids making a ferry return the final step before a long-distance departure. If temples do not interest you, spend the Putuo day on the coast instead. Dongji, Gouqi and the Shengsi islands belong to separate ferry itineraries.

Which places fit your visit?

  1. Start here1. Putuo Mountain · 普陀山 · 普济寺 · 南海观音

A Buddhist island: temple courtyards, Haiyin Pond and the coastal Guanyin statue · Ferry island north of Zhujiajian

One full day including both ferry journeys · Island admission and both ferry directions are required; temple entries, island buses and other services may be additional.

  2. Add by interest2. Nansha Beach · 朱家尖南沙 · 国际沙雕艺术广场

A broad beach and large sand sculptures, with time to sit rather than rush · Southeastern Zhujiajian

2–3 hours · The operator displays ¥70 for Nansha; your date’s ticket and any special-event conditions govern the actual charge.

  3. Add by interest3. Shenjiamen Fishing Harbour · 沈家门渔港 · 滨港路

Fishing boats, a working harbourfront and a seafood dinner · Across the road bridge from Zhujiajian

1½–2 hours, plus dinner · This plan uses the public waterfront and a restaurant meal, not a sightseeing boat.

Separate the ferry day from the road-based coast

Zhoushan visit areas: #1 Putuo Mountain: Ferry island north of Zhujiajian. Full ferry day via Zhujiajian Wugongzhi; Puji and Guanyin are two stops within this island visit.; #2 Nansha Beach: Southeastern Zhujiajian. Nansha; road transfer from base and ferry pier.; #3 Shenjiamen Fishing Harbour: Across the road bridge from Zhujiajian. Road bridge to the main-island harbour; return to the same Zhujiajian hotel.

1 Putuo is reached by ferry; 2 Nansha is on Zhujiajian; 3 Shenjiamen is reached by road bridge. Keep one Zhujiajian base and combine Nansha and Shenjiamen on the same day, with a road transfer and an early dinner.

This is a compact first Zhoushan stay. If you want a city of museums, old streets and easier rail access, choose Ningbo instead. If you want distant island villages and several nights offshore, plan Dongji or Shengsi separately; their boats are not interchangeable with the Putuo shuttle.

Three different coastal experiences

1. Putuo Mountain · 普陀山 · 普济寺 · 南海观音

Putuo is an active place of worship rather than a collection of scenic temples. Begin with Puji Temple 普济寺 and Haiyin Pond 海印池: the pond, stone bridges and ordered temple spaces give a quieter introduction than trying to visit every hall on the island. Dress and behave considerately; follow restrictions on photography inside religious buildings.

After lunch, make the southern Guanyin area 南海观音 your second major stop. The outdoor statue, sea-facing setting and nearby paths contrast with the enclosed courtyards at Puji. Use the marked island bus stops for longer transfers and walk the remaining approach at your own pace. Temple or attraction entry is separate from a bus ride.

The default day is pier → Puji/Haiyin Pond → lunch → southern Guanyin area → pier. Do not add Fayu, Foding Mountain, the cableway and Luojia merely because they appear on the same map. A second island day suits a deeper pilgrimage; it requires another accommodation and ticket-validity decision.

Hours
Take an early confirmed outward service and return during the afternoon. Ferry operations, temple openings and island buses are different schedules; check the actual return service before leaving the pier.
Tickets
In the official 普陀山 or 舟山海星轮船 WeChat account, select the Putuo ticket product for your date, read whether it includes island admission and both 朱家尖–普陀山 ferry directions, and enter every traveller’s correct document.
Time
A full day; the route below deliberately leaves out Foding Mountain and Luojia Island.
Chinese address
出发:朱家尖蜈蚣峙码头;岛上:普陀山客运站、普济寺、南海观音
Getting there
Take a taxi to 朱家尖蜈蚣峙码头, also signed as the Zhujiajian passenger centre. Travel as a foot passenger and keep your accommodation on Zhujiajian for this plan.
How to visit
Carry the original passport used for the booking. The current end-to-end foreign-passport form and foreign-card payment were not tested: if either blocks you, call ferry support at 0580-3889090 and ask for the correct manual-service route before travelling to the pier. Do not enter a fabricated Chinese ID. If admission or sailing cannot be secured, use the Zhujiajian day and keep the same hotel.

2. Nansha Beach · 朱家尖南沙 · 国际沙雕艺术广场

Nansha combines a recognisable seaside outing with something particular to Zhujiajian: large sand sculptures beside an open stretch of golden sand. Give the displays a slow look, then use the beach for a walk or a seated break. The current sculpture theme and condition can change; an older photograph is not a promise of today’s exhibition.

Choose Nansha over a circuit of several beaches if you want one straightforward coastal stop. In cooler weather, enjoy it as a shore walk rather than a guaranteed swimming day. The same wind that makes a coast dramatic can shorten the time you want to spend there.

Hours
Daytime is the default. Opening and last-entry times change seasonally and for weather; the operator publishes the current notice on its website. Do not rely on summer evening hours for another season.
Tickets
The operator’s displayed Nansha reference is ¥70 per adult. Buy the dated 南沙 product through the official 朱家尖风景旅游 channel or staffed ticket point; activities and equipment may cost extra.
Time
2–3 hours, longer only if you choose a permitted beach activity.
Chinese address
舟山市普陀区朱家尖南沙景区
Getting there
Take a road transfer from your Zhujiajian hotel to 南沙景区. Do not confuse this destination with Nansha in Guangzhou.
How to visit
See the sand sculptures and choose a manageable beach section. Swimming depends on the open bathing area and staff directions. If the site is closed, do not use an unguarded shore as a substitute; spend the time on a seated meal or another safe inland activity. For ticket/document questions, the operator lists 0580-6632545.

3. Shenjiamen Fishing Harbour · 沈家门渔港 · 滨港路

The rows of fishing vessels explain why seafood is part of Zhoushan’s identity. This is a working harbour embedded in a town, with ordinary waterfront activity as well as visitor businesses. The view depends on which boats are in port; do not book around a promised mass departure.

Walk a comfortable section of Bin’gang Road, then sit down for dinner. Look across the water rather than stepping onto working quays. The harbour is a separate road outing from Nansha, and an early dinner leaves a simpler return to a Zhujiajian hotel than a late-night cross-island improvisation.

Hours
Daylight into early evening is the suggested visit; this does not promise a particular fish landing or fleet movement.
Tickets
Public harbourfront walk; pay the restaurant bill separately.
Time
1½–2 hours plus dinner, shortened in wind or rain.
Chinese address
舟山市普陀区沈家门滨港路;沈家门渔港
Getting there
Travel by taxi across the bridge from Zhujiajian. Choose a specific road-accessible waterfront meeting point and retain it for the return.
How to visit
Stay on public pedestrian areas, outside operational quays. Eat in a restaurant with an itemised menu, then take your arranged taxi back to the same hotel. If severe weather makes the waterfront unsuitable, eat close to the accommodation instead.

Putuo first, with a second day available to swap

Arrival evening · night 1: check in on Zhujiajian, eat nearby and finish the ferry/admission booking for the first suitable full day. Check the return arrangement and the following day’s weather.

First full day · night 2: take an early confirmed ferry, visit Puji and Haiyin Pond in the morning, have lunch, then continue to the southern Guanyin area. Aim to be back at the island passenger pier in mid-afternoon. That is a planning target, not a guaranteed sailing or a statement of the last boat. Return to your Zhujiajian hotel for dinner.

Second full day · night 3: have a relaxed breakfast, spend the morning at Nansha, then eat lunch and rest. Transfer to Shenjiamen later for the harbour walk and an early seafood dinner; return by road to your hotel.

Departure morning: leave for the airport or your road connection to Ningbo. You can swap the two sightseeing days if the ferry operator confirms service and your tickets permit the change. If sea conditions prevent Putuo throughout the stay, enjoy the road-based coast only when safe; do not switch to an unlicensed boat or force a different exposed island crossing.

Choose a Zhujiajian address for the task you value most

Near the Zhujiajian town services: a useful default for restaurants and taxi access without treating either the pier or the beach as walking distance. Ask the property to show the actual routes to Wugongzhi and Nansha.

Near Wugongzhi pier: useful for an early Putuo departure, but the beach and a broad dinner choice may need a ride. Near Nansha: better for beach time, with an additional transfer on the ferry morning. A beach-view listing does not confirm a quiet room or direct beach access.

Shenjiamen or Donggang: an alternative for more urban services and harbour meals, at the cost of extra road travel to the Zhujiajian stops. Staying on Putuo itself is a different choice for pilgrims; baggage, tickets and ferry dependence need to be included in that plan. Confirm passport check-in, the precise room and cancellation terms before paying.

To find a room, open Zhoushan hotel listings and enter your dates, two adults and three nights. Use the map to choose Zhujiajian or Shenjiamen, rather than the distant Dinghai district; confirm the actual entrance, passport check-in and cancellation conditions with the property before paying. This is a booking search, not a checked room or a guaranteed rate.

A simple island lunch and a harbour dinner

On Putuo, keep lunch near the part of the island you are visiting. A clearly priced noodle or rice meal is more practical than crossing the island for a restaurant. Temple vegetarian meals can be meaningful when actually available, but the day plan does not depend on an unverified serving time or public access to a dining hall.

At Shenjiamen, choose one fish dish, one vegetable dish and rice for two, adding a shellfish or other small plate only after seeing the total. Look for 带鱼 (hairtail) or a simple steamed fish when available; species, season, portion and preparation determine price.

For live seafood, establish whether the price is per item, per 500 g or per kilogram, then agree weight and cooking charges before preparation. Broth and sauces can contain seafood even in a vegetable-looking dish. If allergies or vegetarian needs cannot be confirmed, use a restaurant that can explain its ingredients rather than relying on a generic translation of the dish name.

Reach Zhujiajian by air or road from Ningbo

For flights, search Zhoushan Putuoshan Airport 舟山普陀山机场; the airport is on Zhujiajian, while Putuo Mountain itself is reached by ferry. Verify the airline’s service for your date rather than assuming a city pair operates every day.

For a rail approach, book to Ningbo 宁波 on 12306 and arrange the onward road leg separately. A reserved car with an agreed price to your exact Zhujiajian hotel is the simplest luggage option. If using a scheduled coach, verify its actual departure terminal, arrival stop and onward hotel transfer before buying; a ticket merely labelled “Zhoushan” may leave you far from your base.

Reserve the return road transfer with your hotel or licensed provider, leaving a generous buffer for the bridges, traffic, station security and boarding. Do not combine a final Putuo visit with an essential same-day Ningbo train connection. Keep the Chinese names 朱家尖蜈蚣峙码头, 朱家尖南沙景区 and your hotel address available offline.

Include the sea crossing and the road approach

For two adults, one shared room, two full days and three nights, use 3R + A + 2P + 2N + E + ¥900–1,300. R is the nightly room quote; A is the pair’s complete arrival and departure ground travel, including a Ningbo road leg if used; P is one adult’s booked Putuo admission plus both ferry directions; N is one adult’s selected Nansha ticket; E is the pair’s additional temple/attraction entry total.

The allowance is ¥560–760 for meals from arrival dinner to departure breakfast, ¥240–360 for local road and island-bus rides, and ¥100–180 for drinks and contingency. These are planning allowances, not menu or transport tariffs. Do not count a hotel transfer in both A and the local-rides allowance.

Illustration only: R = ¥350, A = ¥600, P = ¥220, N = ¥70 and E = ¥30 produce ¥3,160–3,560 for the pair. The Nansha operator currently displays ¥70; the other figures are sample inputs to replace with actual bookings. Exclude intercity rail or flights, shopping, a private guide, cableways and extra island excursions. Seasonal discounts or a more expensive boat product change the calculation.

Current booking choices, with historical sources kept in context

Sources were read on . The Zhujiajian operator’s live website provides current seasonal notices, a displayed Nansha admission reference and its visitor-service number. Government destination material supports the island geography and cultural descriptions.

The older Putuo notice establishes the official accounts and an assistance-window model; its pandemic-era requirements and old booking lead times are not repeated here. A current foreign-passport online purchase, foreign-card payment and fixed Putuo fare were not independently completed. Use the operator’s service number if the current booking flow fails. The mid-afternoon return target, visit lengths, hotel areas and budget allowances are editorial planning choices.
