ZHEJIANG · START WITH LINHAI

Taizhou (Zhejiang) Climb above a historic city, eat through its lanes, then decide whether your next stop should be a temple town or mountains.

For a first visit to Taizhou in Zhejiang, start in Linhai. Its city wall rises into wooded hills, Ziyang Street supplies a lively sequence of small food stops, and East Lake offers a gentler garden walk. One full day and two nights gives you time to enjoy all three without making every meal a queue. This is a good stop for travellers who like historic streets and food more than a large metropolitan sightseeing programme.

Taizhou is a broad region, not one compact visitor centre. Linhai is separate from the modern Taizhou urban districts; Tiantai’s temples and Xianju’s mountain scenery require another transfer and their own time. This first-stay plan keeps you in Linhai. Add one regional destination if you have longer, rather than returning across the region after each outing.

Which places fit your visit?

  1. Start here1. Linhai’s Taizhou City Wall · 台州府城墙 · 江南长城

Hilltop wall paths, gate towers and views over old Linhai · North and west edges of Linhai’s old city

2½–3½ hours for a selected wall route · Paid wall admission; book 台州府城墙 through the official scenic service and check entry/exit gates.

  2. Start here2. Ziyang Street and the Southern Old City · 紫阳街 · 兴善门

Snack shops, timber-fronted streets and side lanes · South of the hill wall; running toward Xingshan Gate

2–3 hours with several food stops · Street exploration; particular temples, houses and other interiors may have separate conditions.

  3. Add by interest3. East Lake · 东湖

Garden bridges, pavilions and water views below the wall · Eastern edge of the old city, opposite Lansheng Gate

45–90 minutes · The government announced free scenic-area entry from 2026; separately offered services are not automatically included.

Linhai first; regional Taizhou comes later

The three numbered choices belong to Linhai: East Lake sits by the hill-wall approach, while Ziyang Street leads through the southern old city. The wall is the strenuous element. Put it before a long meal, with the streets and lake forming a flexible remainder of the day.

For a regional extension, choose Tiantai 天台 for Guoqing Temple and a temple-town stay, or Xianju 仙居 / Shenxianju 神仙居 for mountain scenery and substantial walking. Each deserves at least another full day and two nights when arrival and departure need transfers. Shenxianju requires its own weather, ticket and cableway decisions through the operator. Neither is included in the Linhai budget or a promised same-day circuit.

Jiaojiang and the other modern Taizhou districts suit a different city or coastal trip. Do not choose a hotel there solely because its booking page says Taizhou if your main objective is Linhai’s old city.

Use the food street for small portions

海苔饼 haitai bing is a baked seaweed pastry; start with a small bag while warm. 麦虾 maixia is a local dough/noodle dish, not simply a plate of shrimp: toppings and broth can include seafood or meat, so check ingredients. These suit a snack and a light lunch rather than two large meals back to back.

蛋清羊尾 danqing yangwei is a sweet fried egg-white dessert, commonly with bean-paste filling; despite its name, it is not a lamb-tail dish. Share a small portion after a savoury meal. Ask about nuts, sesame, egg and other ingredients where relevant.

Eat near Ziyang Street after the wall, then choose a sit-down dinner near your hotel. Compare the displayed menu and portion sizes; the guide does not endorse a particular queue or claim a freshly tested restaurant.

Prioritise an easy start at the old city

East Lake / old-city edge: the simplest base for this itinerary. Choose an accessible road entrance and check the actual walk to Lansheng Gate. A modern hotel just outside the lanes can be easier with suitcases than a small inn deep inside them.

Inside the Ziyang Street area: choose for atmosphere and food on the doorstep, accepting potential noise and a walk from vehicle pickup. Confirm room access, stairs and late check-in.

Linhai station: useful only if a very early train determines the stay. Taizhou station or Taizhou West station belong to different arrival choices; a hotel near either will not put you beside Linhai’s wall. Confirm passport registration with the selected property before payment.

Two adults, one shared room, two nights

For two adults sharing one room, one full sightseeing day and two nights, use 2R + A + T + ¥520–780. R is the nightly room quote, A is both travellers’ total station transfers, and T is their wall admission and any chosen paid interior. The lake’s ordinary free admission does not make other products free.

The editorial allowance contains ¥320–480 for meals from arrival dinner through departure breakfast, ¥80–120 for local journeys and ¥120–180 for drinks and contingency. It excludes intercity rail or flights, shopping, paid guides and any Tiantai or Xianju extension.

Example inputs R = ¥350, A = ¥140 and T = ¥120 give ¥1,480–1,740 for the pair. The ¥120 is an editable sample ticket input, not a verified current wall quote. Replace it with the official product price and use a higher room quote for busy dates.

Adding a slower Linhai day and a third night adds R + ¥260–400 for shared food, local travel and contingency, before extra admissions. With the example room, the extra day adds ¥610–750; the three-night total becomes ¥2,090–2,490.

A climb, a street and a garden

1. Linhai’s Taizhou City Wall · 台州府城墙 · 江南长城

The wall is the defining Linhai experience. Its northern section follows steep wooded ground, so views arrive through a real climb rather than a flat stroll around a city block. Look back over roofs and East Lake, then follow the available wall section at a pace that leaves energy for the streets below.

For a straightforward first visit, start at Lansheng Gate opposite East Lake, climb onto the northern hill section and follow the signed open route toward Baiyun Tower as far as your energy permits. Turn back in time to descend through Lansheng Gate, then take a local road transfer to Ziyang Street. This out-and-back avoids depending on a distant exit. A longer one-way wall walk toward the western and southern gates is an alternative only after entrance staff confirm the open route and your descent point.

Hours
Visit in daylight within the ticket’s published entry window. Rain, heat and maintenance can change the suitable route; do not assume evening wall access.
Tickets
Paid wall admission; book 台州府城墙 through the official scenic service and check entry/exit gates.
Time
2½–3½ hours for a selected wall route
Chinese address
临海市台州府城墙揽胜门;东湖对面
Getting there
From an East Lake / old-city hotel, walk or take a short local transfer to 揽胜门. Save the entrance separately from the general name 江南长城.
How to visit
The steep approach has many steps. If climbing is unsuitable, use East Lake and Ziyang Street as the main day, with ground-level gate views. Avoid wet exposed wall sections; descend only by signed exits.

2. Ziyang Street and the Southern Old City · 紫阳街 · 兴善门

Ziyang Street works best as a sequence of small discoveries: a warm snack, an old frontage, a side lane, then another stop. The main street can be busy and commercial, while side lanes offer a quieter view of the old-city fabric. Give it daylight time for the architecture and return briefly after dinner only if you want the atmosphere.

Walk toward Xingshan Gate at the southern end, where the old city meets its riverside edge. Longxing Temple and Jinshan’s pagodas are nearby additional interests; their interiors or climbs are separate choices. Do not promise yourself another uphill visit after a tiring wall morning.

Hours
Street access and individual shop hours differ. Visit the main food area around lunch or early dinner; late-night openings are not guaranteed.
Tickets
Street exploration; particular temples, houses and other interiors may have separate conditions.
Time
2–3 hours with several food stops
Chinese address
临海市紫阳街;兴善门
Getting there
After returning to Lansheng Gate, use a local taxi or current street directions to 紫阳街. Start toward its northern end and walk south to 兴善门. A pickup point should be on the surrounding road, not inside the pedestrian lane.
How to visit
Try two or three small foods instead of a long queue at every named shop. Keep the southern gate as a simple endpoint, then return to the hotel by foot or a local taxi from the road.

3. East Lake · 东湖

East Lake is a useful counterweight to the wall: water, garden paths and pavilions at a slower pace. Seen together, the lake and the wall explain the shape of old Linhai far better than another isolated attraction would. Pick a short garden circuit and a rest stop rather than treating the lake as exercise to finish.

Because it is beside the Lansheng approach, use it either before the climb or on the following morning. It is the better core choice when steps or wet weather make the upper wall unsuitable, although outdoor garden paths can still be slippery.

Hours
Check the current garden gate hours locally; free admission does not mean every gate is open all night.
Tickets
The government announced free scenic-area entry from 2026; separately offered services are not automatically included.
Time
45–90 minutes
Chinese address
临海市东湖景区
Getting there
Use 东湖景区 rather than an unrelated lake of the same name. The lake is across from the Lansheng wall entrance.
How to visit
Keep to open paths and return to the same gate for an easy hotel transfer. Optional boating or special activities are not required and are outside this itinerary.

A full day that still leaves room to eat

Arrival evening · night 1: reach your Linhai hotel, have dinner and confirm the wall’s next-day opening and exit arrangement. Keep luggage at the hotel during sightseeing.

Full day · night 2: start at Lansheng Gate, walk a suitable out-and-back portion of the open northern wall and descend through the same gate. Transfer to Ziyang Street for a late lunch, then explore south toward Xingshan Gate. Use the late afternoon for East Lake if energy allows; otherwise take a shorter garden walk before departure on the following morning, provided the train is comfortably later.

Departure: transfer to the station on your booking. In rain or excessive heat, shorten or omit the wall and give the lake, lanes and a seated meal more time. A three-night stay gives you a separate slow old-city day; it does not automatically make Tiantai and Shenxianju easy additions.

Book Linhai when Linhai is the destination

On 12306, compare trains to Linhai 临海 first. Taizhou 台州 and Taizhou West 台州西 are distinct stations serving the wider region; check the hotel transfer before accepting either alternative. This is Zhejiang 台州, not Jiangsu 泰州.

For the first arrival, a licensed taxi to your saved Chinese hotel address is the straightforward choice. Current bus directions can work for travellers without much luggage, but use the actual arrival station and time; no service number or last departure is assumed here.

Inside Linhai, walk between the old-city choices where comfortable. If finishing far from the hotel after the wall, use a taxi from a road outside the pedestrian area. For the departure, arrange hotel collection with the exact station name and enough margin for traffic, security and platform access.
