Shenzhen: city walks, design and the bay
Stay in Nanshan or Futian, allow two full days, and choose a few contrasting places: the bay, Nantou’s lanes and OCT-LOFT’s converted factories. Add the museum and a skyline walk for the city’s story. Dapeng’s fortified town needs a separate full day and an arranged return.
- Allow
- Two full days / three nights for the city; add a day for Dapeng.
- Sleep
- Nanshan for western sights; Futian for a balanced first stay; Luohu for Dongmen and its border crossing.
- Arrange
- Exact hotel room and station name. Book both road legs if going to Dapeng.

Pick experiences that interest you; two days do not need all eight. The bay is an open-air walk, OCT-LOFT is a creative district, and Dafen is a working painting district. Time allowances are editorial planning estimates, including transport only where stated.
Choose the right part of a long city
Shenzhen spreads far beyond one walkable centre. Group places by area and make one main move across the city, instead of repeatedly returning to a distant hotel between visits.
- West: Nanshan · 南山 and Qianhai · 前海
- Nantou, OCT-LOFT and the bay are in the western city, but still need separate metro or taxi legs. Qianhai is farther west around a newer business area; a Qianhai hotel is not automatically beside the Shenzhen Bay Park walking entrance or Shekou waterfront.
- Middle: Futian · 福田
- The museum, Civic Center, Lianhuashan and central business skyline make a compact sightseeing group. This is the strongest compromise when your plans include both Nanshan and Luohu. Futian railway station and Futian Checkpoint are different destinations.
- East of the centre: Luohu · 罗湖
- Dongmen, Shenzhen railway station and Luohu Checkpoint sit on this side. Choose it for a street-food evening or that specific crossing, accepting a longer trip to the Nanshan sights and airport.
- Northeast: Dafen in Longgang · 龙岗大芬
- Give the painting district half a day with its metro journeys. Pair it with Dongmen on Line 3 if you want an eastern-city outing.
- Far east: Dapeng Peninsula · 大鹏半岛
- The fortress is a road excursion. Reserve at least two hours each way from the central city as a planning floor, with extra room for weekend queues; a western Nanshan start can take longer.
Allow roughly 45–75 minutes door to door for a major Nanshan–Futian or Futian–Luohu move, and 60–90 minutes for Nanshan–Luohu. These are conservative planning allowances, not timetables. Station walks, transfers and rush hour matter; use the actual hotel and entrance pins when setting off.
Build two or three full days from nearby places
- Nantou → OCT-LOFT → a short bay walk: allow 7–9 hours with lunch and transfers. Give each district a focused visit and keep the shore walk short. If an exhibition takes longer, remove Nantou or the bay rather than rushing all three.
- Shenzhen Museum → lunch → Lianhuashan: allow 5–6 hours. This is the natural Futian combination. Dongmen can supply a later meal after a separate metro journey, or you can finish in Futian with a quieter dinner.
- Dafen → Dongmen: allow 5–7 hours with the journeys and a meal. Choose this for studios, shopping and street life, replacing part of the western-city programme if you have only two days.
- Dapeng Fortress → optional Jiaochangwei shore → city hotel: keep 8–10 hours or more. Reserve the day for this trip, including both road legs. It should not share a date with a tightly timed onward train, flight or border crossing.
With two full days, use one western-city combination and one Futian combination. With three, add Dafen for art and shopping or Dapeng for the old fortified town. Choose Dapeng only if its journey is worth a full day to you. For a short visit between Guangzhou and Hong Kong, two nights can yield one full Shenzhen day; pick one area group and protect the travel blocks.
Arrange the room and the long journey
Most of these visits use free public space. Book the hotel and onward seat first, then a particular OCT-LOFT event or Dafen class if it is central to your visit. Shenzhen Museum’s History and Folk Culture venue does not need advance reservation; take the original passport.
For Dapeng, obtain a round-trip quote specifying the exact hotel, fortress pickup, waiting hours, tolls, parking and any child seat. Confirm whether an extra Jiaochangwei stop is included. The 2026 road rule requires eligible small private cars to reserve entry on weekends and public holidays from 1 May through 8 October; licensed taxis and qualifying ride-hailing vehicles are exempt. A hired car is not automatically exempt. The driver should resolve the actual vehicle’s status before departure; later seasons require their own notice.
Choose a base and a real room
Default to Futian for a balanced two-day stay, or Nanshan when the bay, Nantou and design district are your priorities. Luohu works for Dongmen evenings and a Luohu crossing. Keep one base for a short city visit. An airport hotel or a Dapeng guesthouse solves a different trip and adds repeated journeys to these city sights.
These options offer distinct locations and published bed configurations. Enter every adult and each child’s age in the linked room selector; compare the total with breakfast, extra bedding and cancellation included. A room category containing “family” does not by itself establish capacity for your party. Bring original passports for hotel registration.
Nanshan: Holiday Inn Shenzhen Donghua · 深圳东华假日酒店
南山区南海大道东华园2307号. Choose this for a western-city base with Line 11 access at Nanshan and Line 9 at Nanshan Book Mall · 南山书城. The operator’s Standard Room is 25–30 m² with one king or two double beds; Premium rooms are 35–39 m² with the same broad bed options. Select the bed configuration explicitly. Cribs and rollaways are listed as available, subject to the room and request; obtain the extra-bed charge and permitted child occupancy from IHG/the hotel at +86 755 86193999 or hisz@hi-shenzhen.com. Select a Donghua room →
Futian: Hilton Shenzhen Futian · 深圳大中华希尔顿酒店
福田区深南大道1003号大中华国际金融中心B座. This base suits the civic-centre group and onward access through Futian station. For a couple, the platform lists King Guest Room; for a three-person family, Family Stander Room – Triple Occupancy has one queen and one single bed. The Trip.com listing welcomes all-country guests and all-age children; ages 0–17 stay free using existing beds, while crib/extra-bed conditions vary by room. This does not include unlimited occupancy or every breakfast. Larger families can compare the named adjoining-room products. Confirm the exact layout through Hilton, +86 755 21308888. Select the Futian room and family count →
Luohu: Hyatt Place Shenzhen Dongmen · 深圳东门凯悦嘉轩酒店
罗湖区建设路3018号. Choose it for a walk into Dongmen and a short metro link to Shenzhen station/Luohu. The useful family distinction in Hyatt’s room list is Specialty King (With Sofa Bed): one king plus a sleeper sofa. The ordinary King and both listed suites are labelled No Sofa Bed; do not book a suite expecting an extra sleeping place. For a child using the sofa bed, confirm maximum occupancy, bedding and breakfast with +86 755 61881234 before choosing a non-refundable rate. Use the Specialty King category and your actual party size. Select a Dongmen room →
Get from the airport or station to your bed
Save the hotel’s full Chinese name and address offline, with its telephone number. The final leg should end at that property’s lobby, not a neighbourhood name. The routes below use the transport bureau’s current metro station list; they are route choices, not live departure times.
Shenzhen Bao’an Airport · 深圳宝安国际机场 (SZX)
After arrival formalities and baggage, follow Ground Transportation Center / Metro signs to Airport · 机场, Line 11. Choose the city-bound direction, Hongling South · 红岭南. Airport North · 机场北 and Airport East · 机场东 are different stations.
- Donghua hotel: Line 11 to Nanshan · 南山, then walk the final approach using the hotel pin or take a short taxi with bags. IHG places the hotel about 550 m from the station; choose your exit from the actual hotel-side map.
- Hilton Futian: Line 11 to Gangxia North · 岗厦北, then follow the hotel pin to 1003 Shennan Avenue; use a short taxi if the station-exit walk is awkward with luggage. Futian railway station is a different stop.
- Hyatt Place Dongmen: Line 11 to Chegongmiao · 车公庙, change to Line 1 toward Luohu, and leave at Laojie · 老街. Walk the final block to 3018 Jianshe Road.
As planning allowances after leaving arrivals, reserve about 60–90 minutes to a Nanshan/Futian hotel and 90–120 minutes to Dongmen by metro and foot. Queues and missed connections add time. Near the end of metro service, show staff your final destination; a last airport train may not connect with your next line. If service has ended, use the signed official taxi queue or your hotel’s booked transfer to its lobby. The airport transport page carries operating updates.
Guangzhou or another mainland city by train
Compare the exact arrival station when booking: Shenzhen North · 深圳北, Futian · 福田 and Shenzhen · 深圳 are not interchangeable. Choose a service that fits the hotel and departure city; do not add a long station transfer just for a slightly shorter ride.
- Shenzhen North → Futian: follow east-plaza signs for Line 4 toward Futian Checkpoint; leave at Civic Center and take a short taxi to the Hilton. The station access guide locates metro and official taxis on the east side. For a prebooked car, use its agreed plaza and level.
- Shenzhen North → Donghua: an official taxi directly to the Nanhai Road address is the simpler choice with several bags. A metro alternative is Line 5 to Qianhaiwan, then Line 11 to Nanshan and the final hotel walk.
- Futian → Hilton: take a short taxi to the full hotel address, or Line 11 one stop to Gangxia North and walk. Futian → Donghua: Line 11 west to Nanshan, then the same final approach.
- Shenzhen station in Luohu → Hyatt: follow metro signs to Luohu · 罗湖; Line 1 to Laojie, then walk to the hotel. Keep the railway-station route separate from the immigration route for Luohu Checkpoint.
Keep original booking passports accessible for rail checks and use the staffed channel if a gate cannot read them. From a mainland train arrival, allow roughly 45–75 minutes for station exit and the city-hotel transfer; a taxi queue or a hotel on the opposite side can extend it. For Hong Kong trains, include the separate West Kowloon formalities.
Eight places, with the journey home included
1. Shenzhen Bay Park · 深圳湾公园
Start here for Shenzhen’s outdoor life: a long shore promenade, wide water and people walking after work. Choose a short segment rather than trying to cover the whole coast. The open view is the experience; it does not need a paid observation deck.
- Hours and last entry
- 06:00–23:00 according to the city park guide. Choose early morning or late afternoon for comfort. The sheltered bay attracts seasonal birds, with the main viewing season October–May.
- Tickets and booking
- No general park admission or booking. Food and any paid services are separate. Follow posted walking and cycling rules; this route works entirely on foot.
- Time
- 1½–2 h for a short out-and-back
- Address
- 深圳湾公园 · 深圳市南山区深圳湾滨海休闲带;集合点:深圳湾公园地铁站D2口. Save this entrance, rather than a distant western-shore pin with the same park name.
- Getting there
- Metro Line 9 to Shenzhen Bay Park · 深圳湾公园; the park authority lists D2, A and C as direct park exits. Return to the same station. A taxi pickup belongs on the road side, outside the promenade.
- Visit route
- Metro entrance → waterfront → 40–50 minutes along the open shore → turn back → same station. Keep birds undisturbed and stay on public paths. Choose a shorter turnaround with children or in hot weather; the full coast would be a different outing.
2. Nantou Ancient City · 南头古城
Nantou lets you see older Shenzhen within the modern city: a compact street pattern, historical buildings and contemporary shops fitted into existing lanes. Come for the mix of everyday neighbourhood and architectural reuse, rather than expecting an untouched walled town.
- Hours and last entry
- The public lanes have no single ticket window. Late morning through afternoon suits the shops and cafés; individual exhibitions and interiors set their own hours.
- Tickets and booking
- The city commerce guide confirms free general admission. Shopping, food and separately ticketed exhibitions are optional.
- Time
- 2–3 h including a café or meal
- Address
- 南头古城 · 深圳市南山区南山大道与深南大道交会处附近. Use 南头古城南门 for a southern walking start, or follow the signed approach from 中山公园站.
- Getting there
- Line 12 to Zhongshan Park · 中山公园, Exit D, then follow the town signs; allow about 10 minutes on foot. Nantou Ancient City · 南头古城 station is another Line 12 approach. Do not send a taxi into the narrow pedestrian lanes.
- Visit route
- Town entrance → main lane → smaller side streets and one open interior or design shop → café/lunch → nearest agreed gate. For #1 afterward, allow a separate metro/taxi journey across Nanshan; the coast is not immediately outside the town.
3. OCT-LOFT · 华侨城创意文化园
Former factory buildings now hold creative businesses, galleries, independent shops and cafés. Choose this for design and a relaxed afternoon. It is a working cultural district: the current exhibition or performance matters more than collecting every building.
- Hours and last entry
- Visit late morning or afternoon for the best chance of finding several businesses open. There is no common gallery closing time. Use the district operator’s programme for a particular exhibition, market or concert; an old festival listing is not a weekly schedule.
- Tickets and booking
- Walking the public lanes does not require an exhibition ticket. Book a specific paid show or workshop only after selecting its venue, date, language and entry instructions. If there is no suitable programme, retain the architecture, shops and café visit.
- Time
- 2–3 h; longer for a booked event
- Address
- 华侨城创意文化园南区 · 深圳市南山区华侨城. Use the full OCT-LOFT / 创意文化园 name: OCT Harbor · 欢乐海岸 and Window of the World · 世界之窗 are different places.
- Getting there
- The city guide gives Qiaocheng East · 侨城东, Line 1 Exit A, or Qiaocheng North · 侨城北, Line 2 Exit B. Walk to the chosen south/north area, then leave through the station nearest your final stop.
- Visit route
- South-area entrance → converted factory lanes → one open exhibition or shop → café → return to metro. Add a booked evening performance only if its finish works with your return. It fits a Nanshan outing, but trying to give Nantou, the coast and every gallery a full visit makes a long day.
4. Shenzhen Museum: History and Folk Culture · 深圳博物馆历史民俗馆
Choose this when you want the city’s earlier history and social context alongside its modern skyline. It is also the strongest indoor anchor in this selection. Use the Jintian Road / Civic Center venue; the museum operates several different buildings.
- Hours and last entry
- The museum’s English visitor guide publishes Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:30. Monday closure has statutory-holiday exceptions, including closure on the first day after the holiday. Plan a 10:00-or-later arrival.
- Tickets and booking
- Free; the Jintian Road venue has removed advance reservation. Bring the original passport: the museum explicitly provides a valid-document green channel for foreign-passport holders. Security and any exhibition-specific instructions still apply.
- Time
- 2–3 h
- Address
- 深圳博物馆历史民俗馆(金田路馆区)· 深圳市福田区市民中心A区. Do not select the 古代艺术馆 at 同心路6号 or the separate reform exhibition venue.
- Getting there
- Metro Civic Center · 市民中心, Lines 2/8 or 4, Exit B. From a Futian hotel, take a short metro or taxi ride. Combine with #5 after the museum and a lunch break.
- Visit route
- Passport/security entrance → start on the upper exhibition floor and work downward through open displays → exit into the Civic Center area. Then walk north toward Lianhuashan or return to your hotel if rain makes the hill unattractive.
5. Lianhuashan Park · 莲花山公园
A modest hill gives a broad view over Futian’s civic centre and towers. The lawn and shaded lower paths make it more than a viewpoint, while the climb supplies a different experience from the flat bay shore.

- Hours and last entry
- 06:00–23:00, last entry 22:30, in the official park guide. Use daylight for the hill path; choose the lower lawns if heat, rain or mobility makes the climb unsuitable.
- Tickets and booking
- No general admission ticket or advance booking. The summit view does not require buying an observation-deck product. This visit does not depend on a seasonal flower festival or an evening light show.
- Time
- 1½–2 h; allow more for rests
- Address
- 莲花山公园 · 深圳市福田区红荔路6030号. 少年宫地铁站F1口 is the published nearby approach.
- Getting there
- Metro Children’s Palace · 少年宫, Lines 3 or 4, Exit F1, then the signed park entrance. From #4, allow roughly 20–30 minutes to walk toward the southern park side, depending on your museum exit and road crossings.
- Visit route
- Southern park side → signed summit path → city view and summit square → descend to the lower lawns → return via Children’s Palace. Bring water; the uphill section is optional for a family with tired children.
6. Dongmen streets · 东门步行街
Dongmen gives you a dense, noisy commercial quarter rather than another business-district skyline. Come for lanes, storefronts, inexpensive browsing and food. Its renewed façades sit within an active shopping district, so expect crowds and contemporary retail.
- Hours and last entry
- Public streets have no shared closing time. Late afternoon through early evening works for shopping and a meal; each shop has its own hours. Keep the route short during holiday crowds.
- Tickets and booking
- No street-entry ticket or reservation. Pay for individual food and purchases. Ask for the total and portion size before ordering at a stall.
- Time
- 2–3 h with a meal
- Address
- 东门商业步行街 · 深圳市罗湖区东门;步行起点:老街地铁站. 东门町 is a food-street target within the wider district, not a separate city excursion.
- Getting there
- Metro Laojie · 老街, Lines 1 or 3. Use station signs for the pedestrian-shopping area. From the Hyatt Place Dongmen base, walk; for a Nanshan hotel, leave time for the long metro journey back.
- Visit route
- Laojie → pedestrian lanes → Dongmen food area → a short side-street loop → Laojie. Choose this after the Futian group only if you still want a busy evening; it is also a natural partner to #7 by Line 3.
7. Dafen Oil Painting Village · 大芬油画村
Dafen is a place to look at paintings being made, sold and framed, with original work as well as reproductions. It rewards curiosity about the art trade or time spent with one studio. It is geographically separate from OCT-LOFT despite their shared art label.
- Hours and last entry
- The village’s shops and studios keep individual hours; late morning or afternoon is the practical target. Do not base the outing on an old museum exhibition. A specific class needs a confirmed start and finish.
- Tickets and booking
- No general lane admission. Agree the full price, materials, teaching language and whether a painting will be dry enough to carry before paying for a class. For a purchase, distinguish original work from a reproduction and settle packing/shipping separately.
- Time
- 2–3 h there; half a day with travel
- Address
- 大芬油画村 · 深圳市龙岗区布吉街道大芬社区. The district cultural bureau identifies this studio-and-shop district; 大芬美术馆 is an indoor venue within it.
- Getting there
- Line 3 to Dafen · 大芬; Exit A1 is the published village/museum approach. Allow a walk from the station. Laojie and Dafen are on the same line, making Dongmen a more natural pairing than a return across the city to Nantou.
- Visit route
- Village entrance → studio lanes → one longer gallery conversation or prearranged class → return to Dafen station. Ask before photographing artists or entering workspaces; a working studio is not automatically a visitor demonstration.
8. Dapeng Fortress · 大鹏所城
Choose Dapeng for a different scale of history: gates, compact old streets and former military residences far from the central towers. The surviving town justifies its own outing. Nearby Jiaochangwei adds a shore break, but does not erase the long road return.
- Hours and last entry
- The district visitor page lists the town as open all day. Visit in daylight; museums, residences and other interiors have separate hours. Leave the peninsula before your agreed return cutoff.
- Tickets and booking
- No general public-lane ticket; pay separately for any chosen interior, activity or parking. A seasonal vehicle reservation is a road-access rule, not an attraction ticket. Ask the driver which rule applies to the actual vehicle.
- Time
- Full day; reserve 2+ h each way from central Shenzhen
- Address
- 大鹏所城 · 深圳市大鹏新区大鹏街道鹏城社区南门东路. Set pickup outside the 南门 area at an agreed car-accessible point.
- Getting there
- For a first visit, book a licensed round-trip car with waiting time and a return pickup. The district also describes E11/833 to 大鹏中心, then M471 to 大鹏所城; verify that day’s last return before relying on buses. There is no direct metro to the fortress.
- Visit route
- South gate → 南门街 and open side lanes → one available historic interior → lunch → return pickup. If time remains, add nearby 较场尾 as a short shore stop. Keep the city return on the same booking; do not add Dafen or a fixed evening train.
Eat near the places you chose
Use food to complete an area visit. Shenzhen offers Cantonese cooking alongside the food brought by people from other regions; one meal can be a simple rice-and-roast-meat plate, another a seated Cantonese dinner, and a third a busy snack street. These are choices, not dishes that every restaurant promises.
- Dongmen · 东门町 and surrounding pedestrian lanes: go for a casual snack-and-shopping evening from Laojie. Look for a freshly cooked bowl or plate before adding snacks: rice rolls 肠粉, roast-meat rice 烧味饭 or wonton noodles 云吞面 are useful menu terms. Choose from the actual menu and posted portions; the city renewal account confirms the food district remains part of the operating neighbourhood.
- Futian · Lan Ting at Hilton Shenzhen Futian: a seated option at the hotel address above when you want Cantonese cooking with an English-facing booking channel. Hilton lists Cantonese and Sichuan dishes, with lunch 11:30–14:30 and dinner 17:30–22:00. Ask for the current à-la-carte menu and whole-party total, rather than assuming a dim-sum buffet or set meal.
- Nantou · inside the old lanes: make lunch or coffee part of the visit, instead of travelling across Shenzhen for another café. Read the menu before sitting down; contemporary cafés are part of Nantou’s reuse story, while a local-style breakfast is a different choice.
- Dapeng · fortress lanes: the district guide names 濑粉仔 (rice-noodle dish) and 将军鸭 (duck) among local foods. Use those names to find a menu and settle the portion price. For seafood sold by weight, confirm weight, unit price and cooking charge before agreeing.
For an uncomplicated meal, show 不要辣 (no chilli) or 酱料分开 (sauce separately). For an allergy, show the exact ingredient in Chinese and ask staff about stock, sauces and shared cooking equipment; a dish’s English name does not settle its ingredients. With children, an early seated meal is often easier than treating a packed snack street as dinner.
Hong Kong is a separate border journey
Check your own document and entry permission for mainland China and Hong Kong, including the mainland return if you plan a day trip. Permission for one side does not establish permission for the other. Visa-free transit has route and onward-travel conditions; this city guide does not establish your eligibility, and a train ticket is not permission to enter.
- High-speed train via West Kowloon: select the actual Shenzhen destination, usually Futian or Shenzhen North. From Hong Kong, MTR’s departure process places both Hong Kong and mainland immigration at West Kowloon before boarding. Use the original document used to buy the ticket. Real-name/ticket verification stops 30 minutes before departure; plan to arrive about 90 minutes ahead and allow extra time for passports, holidays and queues. On the reverse journey, both sets of formalities follow arrival at West Kowloon. The short train ride is only one part of the journey.
- Futian Checkpoint · 福田口岸: reached by Line 4 or 10, with a crossing into the Hong Kong MTR network. This is not Futian high-speed railway station. Use the checkpoint name in the route planner and check both the crossing and onward-train operating hours.
- Luohu Checkpoint · 罗湖口岸: useful from Luohu, via Luohu metro station and the signed immigration building. Shenzhen railway station stands nearby, but arriving on a domestic train does not complete the crossing. See the official city port guide for access and operating windows.
Keep Hong Kong or Macao as a separately planned leg with its own entry rules and transport booking. Do not attach either to a Dapeng excursion or assume a mainland taxi can continue across the boundary. For a short Shenzhen stay, choose the crossing after the hotel and onward destination are clear.
Leave room for the return
In the city, metro works well between the area groups; a licensed taxi is useful for the final hotel approach, tired children or heavy rain. Keep a small cash fallback and a saved Chinese destination if phone payment or data fails. Use the actual route’s last connections, rather than treating the whole network’s closing time as one guarantee.
For an onward mainland train, a practical planning target is to reach the correct station about an hour before departure, with more room at holidays or when passport checks need staff. Add the hotel-to-station journey on top. For a flight, work backward from the airline’s check-in deadline and an airport arrival target of roughly two hours for domestic or three hours for international departures, then add the full road/metro journey. These are planning buffers, not carrier cutoffs.
Returning from Dapeng deserves its own margin for road queues. If the return starts slipping, cut the optional shore stop and leave; a late taxi booked only after dinner is a poor basis for a fixed departure. For a flight-to-flight transfer within SZX, use the separate Shenzhen domestic-to-international connection guide; it solves an airport connection, not a city visit.
Adjust for heat, rain and children
Use early or late light for the exposed bay, and leave an indoor block around the middle of a hot day. In heavy rain, use the museum, an actually open gallery and a seated meal; OCT-LOFT’s lanes are outdoors between venues. During severe-weather closures, follow local transport and venue instructions and remove the shore, hill or peninsula trip.
For a family, the easiest pair is the museum plus Lianhuashan’s lower lawns, or a short bay walk with a clear turnaround. Nantou and Dongmen can be crowded and uneven, while Dafen works best when a child actively wants a suitable class. Check language, age and duration for that activity. A stroller-friendly hotel does not make the hill climb or every old-town lane step-free.
Shenzhen’s strongest reason to visit is its combination of contemporary city life, design, everyday green space and older neighbourhoods. If your larger China trip already has several megacities and you mainly want monumental ancient sites, keep Shenzhen brief and choose its most distinctive area group.
