Shaoxing canals, Lu Xun and a slower Zhejiang stay
Shaoxing is a working canal city where whitewashed houses, stone bridges and small wine shops sit beside modern streets. Come for the places that shaped the writer Lu Xun, a slow walk beside the water and a meal built around Shaoxing's rice-wine and preserved-food traditions. Stay in Yuecheng's old-city area for two nights: that gives you one uninterrupted sightseeing day and time for a second neighbourhood or an outlying landscape before leaving.
Choose Shaoxing if you enjoy literary history and lived-in streets. Choose Hangzhou for West Lake and tea country, or Wuzhen for a more concentrated, managed water-town stay. A Shaoxing day trip is worthwhile for the old city; it becomes hurried if you add both East Lake and Lanting.
Quarry cliffs, narrow water passages and an optional black-awning boat. · East outlying road excursion
Half-day with the return transfer · Admission and boat separate unless the current product includes both.
Understand the old city and the two outward choices
Place numbers are references, not a six-stop itinerary. #1 and #2 make the core old-city day; #4 is beside the Lu Xun area. #3 is a separate old-city loop. Lanting #5 lies southwest and East Lake #6 east: choose one road excursion, with its return already arranged.
Open full-size map ↗. Pair Lu Xun Native Place with Shen Garden. Cangqiao and Bazi belong to separate old-city walks; Lanting southwest and East Lake east are alternative road excursions. This is an editorial area diagram, not a navigation map; boxes do not encode measured distance or a walking route. ChinaMile area diagram; location sources. Navigation: search the Chinese name in Amap.
A day trip, or two nights with breathing room
One full day from Hangzhou: book the Lu Xun daytime slot and both train journeys. Arrive at the station on the ticket, take a taxi to the Lu Xun visitor centre, visit #1, have lunch on Luxun Middle Road, then choose #4 or a longer #2 canal walk. Eat early or buy food before transferring back to the station. Leave #3, #5 and #6 out unless you have deliberately dropped the main visit. The city portion needs around six hours by editorial estimate, with rail, station access and queues additional.
Two nights, one full day and two half-days: arrive in the afternoon, leave luggage and walk #2 before dinner. Use the full day for the reserved #1 visit, lunch and #4; add a café or return to the room before another old-city evening. On the departure morning choose #3, collect luggage and leave after lunch. If you want #5 or #6, arrive early enough to give the first afternoon to that excursion, or add a third night; do not move an outlying boat visit into the narrow gap before a fixed train.
Two full sightseeing days: keep the old-city day above, then give the second morning and early afternoon to either Lanting or East Lake, returning to the same Yuecheng hotel. Bazi Bridge fits an otherwise free morning or late afternoon. This version needs three nights if you want both sightseeing days free of arrival/departure pressure.
Sleep in Yuecheng, and distinguish two hotel styles
For the first visit, use Yuecheng's old-city area around Lu Xun Native Place, City Square or Fushan/Cangqiao. You can break the day at the hotel and return to dinner without crossing the whole municipality. Keqiao and hotels beside Shaoxing North are useful for their own transport or business needs, but a Shaoxing address alone does not put you in the old city.
Hotel
Why choose it / useful room choice
Trade-off and booking action
Mumian Shaoxing, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt · 绍兴木棉花酒店, 28 South Mazhen Road, Yuecheng
Design-led former factory setting by Fushan; choose the named 1 King Bed or 2 Twin Beds room for two adults. Better fit for old-city walks and a stay with character.
It is not at the Lu Xun gate; use a short city transfer for #1. Book dates and occupancy on Hyatt, then compare the cancellation terms, breakfast and bed configuration. Room types and address are operator-confirmed; rates are date-specific.
Crowne Plaza Shaoxing · 绍兴世茂皇冠假日酒店, 379 Shengli East Road, Yuecheng
A conventional full-service base beside Meilong Lake in Didang, with an indoor pool; a Standard Room is the sensible starting comparison.
More rides to the old-city lanes. Select the required king/twin configuration rather than accepting an unspecified bed. Use IHG's property page; this is the city hotel, not Crowne Plaza Shaoxing Binhai New Area.
These are location-and-room comparisons, not claims of inspected rooms or guaranteed availability. A cheaper room in the same old-city base can be the better purchase: check its exact map pin and recent room photos before paying. The budget example uses a generic room allowance, not a quoted rate for either hotel above.
Eat along the walk
After #1, eat on or just off Luxun Middle Road before continuing to the canals. Xianheng Hotel's restaurant / 咸亨酒店, at 179 Luxun Middle Road, is a useful literary-food stop associated with Kong Yiji. It is also a lodging complex; here the recommendation is the meal stop, not a third hotel recommendation. Ask for the current menu and choose a small plate of 茴香豆, the local bean snack, with a small serving of 黄酒 if you drink alcohol. The city's hotel and restaurant description confirms the address and literary connection.
For dinner, Cangqiao Straight Street lets you stop where the pace suits you. Look for 梅干菜扣肉—rich pork with preserved vegetables—alongside rice and a fresh vegetable dish, rather than ordering several salty, preserved dishes at once. Share the pork dish between two and add another main only if hungry. At Lanting, the operator names this dish at the exit-area Echi Restaurant. 臭豆腐 is the smaller snack choice: Shaoxing's version uses fermented brine and is commonly fried with a sweet or spicy sauce. Order a small portion first. Local food description
Rice wine is part of the city's identity, but wine-flavoured sweets and dishes are not automatically alcohol-free. Ask before ordering if alcohol matters to you. For a straightforward request, show 不要酒,也不要用黄酒做菜。 — “No alcohol, including rice wine in the cooking.” A snack or a café stop is easy to place between visits; do not schedule a long tasting before an onward drive you intend to make yourself.
Know what the stay will cost
For two adults sharing one room, two nights, one full day plus arrival and departure half-days, a useful planning example is:
Input, not a live quote
Two-person amount
Room: CNY 400 × 2 nights
CNY 800
Meals, snacks and drinks: CNY 150 per person across the full day, plus CNY 75 across the two half-days
CNY 450
City transport pool: station transfers and short rides
CNY 250
Optional admission/boat allowance: CNY 100 per person
CNY 200
Planning total
CNY 1,700 for two / CNY 850 each
The calculation is 800 + 450 + 250 + 200 = 1,700. It excludes intercity rail or flights, an airport car, a waiting car to Lanting, shopping and paid evening shows. An all-old-city visit may use less of the activity allowance; a boat or car excursion can use more. Obtain the excursion fare before committing and replace the allowance with that amount. The named full-service hotels may exceed the CNY 400 room input on your date. No unknown charge has been treated as zero.
Read the city in small pieces
1. Lu Xun Native Place · 鲁迅故里
Lu Xun's former home, Baicao Garden and Sanwei Study are the most direct way into the district. Look at the relationship between house, garden and schoolroom, then use the memorial museum to understand the adult writer. Readers familiar with his work will recognise the names; everyone else benefits from learning that these ordinary domestic settings became material for some of modern China's best-known writing. Allow 2–3 hours, an editorial allowance including pauses, rather than collecting every doorway. The district's official route page identifies these connected stops.
Reserve before going. Lu Xun Native Place uses free timed reservations through the official WeChat accounts 绍兴市文旅集团 or 绍兴鲁迅纪念馆. Select the visit date and time and keep the confirmation. Carry the original passport used for your booking. The authority's published guidance describes QR-code admission, but this research did not establish a current foreign-passport screen-by-screen workflow. If the form does not accept your document, seek the official visitor centre's help before joining an entry queue; do not enter a made-up Chinese ID or pay a seller simply for access to a free slot. If there is no place that day, do #2 and #3 and move #1 to another available slot. Official reservation guidance
Use a morning or daytime slot for the simplest plan. The operator has extended evening opening and also issues holiday adjustments; the time on your actual reservation is the relevant one. Do not assume a Monday evening is available or use an old screenshot of closing time. Operator opening notice
Navigate to 鲁迅故里景区游客中心 on Luxun Middle Road in Yuecheng, rather than to a similarly named hotel. Use the signed visitor entrance and follow staff-directed circulation; busy-day crowd control can change the walking direction.
Hours
Use your reserved daytime slot; holiday and evening arrangements vary.
Tickets
Book in 绍兴市文旅集团 or 绍兴鲁迅纪念馆. Foreign-passport form not tested: ask the visitor centre if it rejects your document.
Time
2–3 hours; editorial planning allowance.
Chinese address
鲁迅故里景区游客中心,越城区鲁迅中路
Getting there
Walk from nearby old-city streets or take a taxi to the signed visitor centre.
How to visit
Use the specific visit and return plan below; reserve only where this sight requires it.
2. Cangqiao Straight Street · 仓桥直街
Walk 仓桥直街 for the close relationship between canal, stone path and houses: small bridges connect the two banks, while restaurants and shops occupy the street behind. This is a residential historic district, so keep doorways clear and ask before photographing people at close range. Begin at the Shengli West Road / 胜利西路 end and walk south toward Luxun West Road / 鲁迅西路, stopping when a bridge view or a meal catches your attention. Allow 1–2 hours, longer with dinner. The route is an editorial suggestion using the municipal description of the street's north and south ends.
There is no single admission ticket for this street walk; individual museums, shops, boat services and events are separate. Cobbles, narrow waterside sections and bridge steps make a short out-and-back easier than a complete loop for anyone limiting walking. A restaurant near your starting end is a good rain fallback. Leave the lane at a main road for a taxi rather than expecting a car to reach a canal-side doorway.
Hours
Outdoor lane; individual venues set their own hours.
Tickets
No combined admission ticket for the public street.
Time
1–2 hours; longer with dinner; editorial planning allowance.
Chinese address
仓桥直街,胜利西路至鲁迅西路
Getting there
Start at Shengli West Road and walk south; use a main road for taxi pickup.
How to visit
Use the specific visit and return plan below; reserve only where this sight requires it.
3. Bazi Bridge · 八字桥
八字桥 is a bridge visit and neighbourhood walk, not another enclosed attraction. Look at the branching approaches and waterways, then wander the adjacent canal lane without entering private courtyards. It works well early in the day, before returning to your hotel for luggage, or as an alternative when the Lu Xun reservation is full. Budget 45–75 minutes as an editorial allowance. The city's heritage overview identifies Bazi Bridge as one of the preserved historic residential blocks.
Use 八字桥历史街区 as the taxi destination and finish at the nearby vehicle-accessible street. The bridge has steps: a canal-side view is the useful short option if crossing it is uncomfortable. This is an outdoor walk; rain and slippery stone are good reasons to shorten it.
Hours
Daylight suits the canal and steps; shorten in rain.
Tickets
No combined attraction ticket for the public walk.
Time
45–75 minutes; editorial planning allowance.
Chinese address
八字桥历史街区
Getting there
Taxi to the historic district, then continue on foot. Bridge steps are optional.

4. Shen Garden · 沈园
沈园, east of Lu Xun Native Place on Luxun Middle Road, is associated with the poet Lu You and Tang Wan. Its ponds, pavilions and poetry inscriptions reward a quiet hour, especially if you prefer a garden to another memorial house. The district operator's combined route page names the garden's Chi Tou Feng inscription, ponds and halls.
Keep daytime garden entry and 沈园之夜 evening performance separate when booking. Daytime garden entry, a daytime performance and an evening show are different products; do not assume garden admission is free or included in your Lu Xun reservation. Open the official 绍兴市文旅集团 account and choose the dated 沈园 product, or ask the staffed Shen Garden ticket office at 318 Luxun Middle Road / 鲁迅中路318号 to show the ordinary adult ticket and any concession that applies to your documents. Check what the price includes before paying. Do not buy a night-show ticket assuming it includes every daytime site. The show is a worthwhile choice for the sound and staging of local performance; travellers wanting to follow every word should establish the language or translation support before paying. 5. Lanting / Orchid Pavilion · 兰亭
Choose 兰亭景区 for a change from city streets: a garden landscape associated with Wang Xizhi and the gathering that produced the Preface to the Orchid Pavilion. The pleasure is in the bamboo, pavilion inscriptions and winding-stream setting, with the calligraphy museum adding context. Allow 2–3 hours on site plus both road journeys. The operator places it around 13 km southwest of the city and lists daytime entry from 08:00 to 16:40; arrive in the morning rather than close to the final entry.
Take a taxi or hotel-arranged car to 兰亭景区游客中心. Agree the return pickup at the visitor exit and keep the driver contact; for a waiting car, agree waiting time and total price before departure. The operator's website links its ticket shop and publishes a visitor phone, +86 575 84600896. Confirm the date's admission product and fare there. The site has advertised a CNY 70 face value in older promotions, but that is not a verified current tariff; the trip budget below uses a separate planning allowance. Special performances and free-ticket promotions are optional and should not determine an ordinary visit. Have lunch at the exit commercial street or return to the old city; the operator's food page locates Echi Restaurant there and identifies goose, pork with preserved vegetables and bamboo shoots among its dishes.
Hours
Operator lists 08:00–16:40 entry; check dated exceptions and arrive in the morning.
Tickets
Operator ticket shop or visitor phone +86 575 84600896. Older promotions do not establish today’s fare.
Time
2–3 hours on site, plus both road journeys; editorial planning allowance.

Getting there
Taxi or hotel-arranged car; agree a return pickup and waiting charges before departure.

6. East Lake · 东湖
绍兴东湖景区 is the alternative to Lanting, especially if the boat passing close to quarry cliffs is the experience you want. The city's description explains how quarrying left the cliffs and deep pool. Give the visit a half-day with a road return to your old-city hotel. Navigate to the Shaoxing attraction, not Wuhan's much larger East Lake. The Shaoxing scenic operator is linked from Lanting's own website.
Treat admission and the 乌篷船 boat as separate products until the operator's current ticket screen says otherwise. Decide at the staffed counter whether the available boat route, boarding steps, capacity and price suit your party. Avoid buying a city-wide multi-site pass just for this one outing. If boats stop for weather, use the shore visit only if it still appeals; otherwise keep the old-city plan. Arrange your pickup at the scenic visitor exit before entering. No current boat fare or operating timetable is asserted here.
Hours
Confirm dated entry and boat operation; boats may stop in poor weather.
Tickets
Use the staffed counter to check the current route, boarding steps, capacity and price.
Time
Half-day with the return transfer; editorial planning allowance.

Arrive, move and leave from the right station
For a regional arrival, compare the actual trains on China Railway 12306: Hangzhou East 杭州东 → Shaoxing North 绍兴北, or your Shanghai/Ningbo station → 绍兴北. The downtown Shaoxing station 绍兴站 is a different station. Choose the departure you can reach and retain the Chinese station name on your ticket; do not send a driver only “Shaoxing railway station.” Current fares and journey times belong to the selected train, not a generic city estimate.
At Shaoxing North, a taxi from the official rank to the hotel's exact address is the easiest luggage transfer. The station now has a metro connection, confirmed by the municipal opening announcement. Follow the station's current route display for the Line 1 branch and its connection toward the old-city stops 城市广场 or 鲁迅故里. Branch running patterns can differ; ask station staff which train and change your journey needs rather than assuming every Line 1 train continues directly. The metro operator is the timetable and fare entry point.
For a flight, Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport 杭州萧山国际机场 is the relevant regional airport. With luggage or a late arrival, book a car to the Yuecheng hotel with flight number, pickup point and written total price. A public-transport option is useful only when its current final service and transfers fit your landing; do not infer a late-night connection from an old bus page.
Walk within each old-city cluster and use short taxi rides between clusters. For departure, retrieve luggage, then use a taxi or the confirmed metro route back to the station on the issued ticket. Add a station margin to the live ride estimate—aim to reach the station an hour before departure for an unfamiliar journey. That is an editorial buffer, not the railway's stated check-in cutoff. If the outward visit runs long, drop the optional garden or boat; do not gamble the booked onward train on it. Continue to Hangzhou, Ningbo or Shanghai according to the actual rail service.
Adjust for weather and the way you travel
Spring and autumn make the canal walks easier to space through the day. In summer heat, use the reserved indoor/domestic-history visit early, rest around midday and walk #2 late; carry water. Rain makes the stones and bridge steps slippery: shorten the outdoor loops and give more time to the Lu Xun museum if you have its reservation. A boat suspension should remove the boat, not trigger a hurried taxi chase to a second distant scenic area.
In cooler months, use the daylight for #3, #5 or #6 and keep meals close to the hotel. Busy holidays change both availability and opening arrangements; reserve the core visit, keep one optional stop, and choose another day if the only remaining slot would break the return plan. Travellers limiting steps should treat bridge crossings and small-boat boarding as optional; short street sections and taxis produce a better visit than attempting the complete map.
Sources and booking boundaries
Researched 10 October 2026. Hotel locations and named room categories come from the operators; room rates remain date-specific. Sightseeing durations, buffers and the budget example are editorial planning inputs. The Lu Xun foreign-passport booking flow was not transacted; Shen Garden prices and East Lake boat operation must be checked for the selected product and date.
Choose the Yuecheng base, secure the Lu Xun slot, then book the exact trains and hotel. Decide whether an outlying half-day is worth the extra night or car cost. For the simple first stay, the answer is already complete without it: literary houses, canals, a bridge and Shaoxing food, with time to return to the correct station.
