Shanhaiguan & Beidaihe Choose a history base, a seaside base, or time for both
Stay two nights in Shanhaiguan for the gate tower and the wall meeting the sea. Choose three nights in Beidaihe if slow coastal mornings matter more. To enjoy both, give them four nights with one hotel move; they are separate bases along the Qinhuangdao coast, not neighbouring stops on a beach walk.
- History base
- Shanhaiguan old city; arrive at 山海关站
- Seaside base
- Beidaihe resort area; compare 北戴河站 trains
- Useful stay
- 2 nights history · 3 nights coast · 4 nights both
- Decide first
- Hotel base, separate beds if needed, and your return transport
Five visits, three priorities
This regional guide covers Shanhaiguan's old city and coastal fort, the new Great Wall museum, and two contrasting parts of Beidaihe. Five choices are enough to build a worthwhile stay. Central Qinhuangdao, Nandaihe, Aranya and the wider mountain coast are outside this route; adding their names would hide the transport each requires.
Choose the reason for your trip
For history, pair the inland gate with the wall at the sea. For a rest, choose the shore and protect time there.
- 1. First Pass & the old city 天下第一关·山海关古城
The gate tower, defensive scale and street life make the clearest introduction to Shanhaiguan.
2–3 hours, plus an unhurried meal · Shanhaiguan old-city base
- 2. Old Dragon Head 老龙头
The essential sea-and-wall visit, especially if this is your only coastal history stop.
2–3 hours on site, plus the road transfer · Shanhaiguan coast, separate from the old city
- 5. Zhonghaitan shore 中海滩·老虎石一带
The simple coastal break: sand, sea air and time without a ticketed sightseeing sequence.
1–2 hours, or a relaxed half-day with lunch · Central Beidaihe seafront
Add depth to the history stay
The new museum earns its own half-day. It is also a useful indoor option when open and reserved.
- 3. China Great Wall Museum 山海关中国长城博物馆(新馆)
The strongest indoor complement to the physical wall, with objects that explain its construction and defence.
2–3 hours, plus transfers · By Jiaoshan, north of the old city
Add a different coastal landscape
Pick the headland for views and birdwatching, without making dawn or wildlife a condition of success.
- 4. Pigeon Nest Park 鸽子窝公园
A headland and tidal landscape that contrasts with the central sandy shore.
1½–2 hours; longer for patient birdwatching · Eastern Beidaihe headland
Two bases, with Qinhuangdao between them
Shanhaiguan sits to the northeast; Beidaihe is farther southwest along the coast. Within Shanhaiguan, the old city is inland, Old Dragon Head is on the shore, and the new museum is toward Jiaoshan to the north. Within Beidaihe, Pigeon Nest is east of the central Zhonghaitan/Laohushi shore. A hotel with “Qinhuangdao” in its name can be in any of these areas: use its full Chinese address.
Make a cross-coast day a deliberate car excursion, or move hotels once. Do not build a plan around successive taxi searches at every site. The seasonal scenic shuttle and summer beach-to-Shanhaiguan buses have date-limited notices; a route appearing in an older guide does not establish that it operates on your day.
Pick the number of nights before booking the train
| Choice and time | Plan and conditions |
|---|---|
| One day from Beijing: | focus on Shanhaiguan only. If the actual trains leave enough daylight, arrive at 山海关站, leave luggage through an arranged service, visit #1, eat, then take a booked car to #2 and back to the station. Buy the return train first. Drop Old Dragon Head if arrival, queues or weather consume the margin; do not tack on Beidaihe. |
| Two nights, history first: | sleep both nights at the same Shanhaiguan hotel. Arrive for an old-city stroll and dinner; use the full day for #1 and #2 with lunch between them. Put #3 on a separate arrival/departure half-day only if its hours and your train allow; otherwise choose it in place of a closed outdoor visit. |
| Three nights, coastal rest: | sleep all three in Beidaihe. Arrival day is for the hotel and dinner. Use one day for #4 and a leisurely lunch, another for #5 with time back at the hotel. A Shanhaiguan day can replace the second coast day if you book the car round trip; keep #1 and #2, leaving the museum for a longer stay. |
| Four nights, both bases: | two nights in Shanhaiguan, then two in Beidaihe. Follow the history day above. On transfer day choose the reserved museum in the morning only if luggage storage and the onward car are arranged; otherwise move directly, check in and settle. Give Beidaihe a full day for #4 plus a short #5, with a proper meal and hotel break. Depart from the station that fits your final base. |
| Limited stairs or young children: | shorten #1 to the streets and exterior view if the tower steps do not suit, keep #2 to the open lower visitor route, and allow #3 more time. In Beidaihe, choose one shore visit per day and a taxi back. Neither historic wall stairs nor sand should be advertised as a verified step-free circuit. |
The durations are planning choices, not transport promises. If there are only two usable days, remove the cross-coast hotel move before removing meals, the return car or the chance to rest.
Book a bed in the base you actually want
Shanhaiguan: Shaner Siheyuan Hotel
Address: 河北省秦皇岛市山海关区古城南大街6-4号,山而四合院酒店(山海关天下第一关景区古城店). Its South Street location suits an old-city evening and the two-night history plan. The property's Trip.com listing distinguishes a Courtyard Room (Double Bed) with one queen bed from a Siheyuan High-End Standard Room with two double beds. Choose the latter for two separate beds; the promotional room's alternative layouts are not a bed guarantee.
Some listed room types permit smoking. Obtain a confirmed non-smoking room if that matters, rather than relying on a courtyard photograph. For children or limited mobility, confirm occupancy, the actual room floor and steps between car and room. Ask reception for its allowed car meeting point and foreign-passport registration before paying. We have not stayed here or tested its pickup service.
Beidaihe: Sheraton Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Hotel
Address: 河北省秦皇岛市北戴河区滨海大道16号,秦皇岛北戴河喜来登酒店. Use this as a resort-area base for two or three nights, with car trips to the selected shore sections. Marriott's hotel page publishes the address and +86 335 428 1111. The Expedia room listing separately offers a Deluxe Room, 1 King Bed and a Deluxe Room, 2 Double Beds. Both are listed for two guests: two beds do not automatically authorise a family of four.
Ask the hotel to confirm your dated room, any child or extra-bed arrangement, breakfast and cancellation total, passport registration and the correct entrance. “Binhai Road” does not mean direct beach access; neither a pool nor swimming in the sea is a condition of this itinerary. Arrange a return to this exact hotel after Geziwo or Zhonghaitan, not to “Beidaihe beach.”
Late arrival: send the train number or flight number and estimated arrival to the booked property. Secure reception and pickup arrangements before travel; if they cannot support the arrival, change the train or room booking while cancellation terms still permit it.
Buy the visit you chose, then settle the document route
The Shanhaiguan operator's tariff separates the gate, Old Dragon Head, night show and other products. The default #1 + #2 adult admissions total CNY 110 at the listed rates. A CNY 140 pass also includes Chuang Guandong, the Bell and Drum Tower and an old-city sightseeing vehicle; it is not automatically better value for this shorter route, nor proof of transport between every attraction. Prices are published references, not a reservation or an availability check.
Use the official Shanhaiguan tourism site and linked service account. Its customer-service panel publishes +86 335 525 8000 and +86 335 525 9000. Ask for your date's last admission, open wall section, ordinary-passport booking channel and counter if online purchase fails. Eligibility for a discount must be confirmed for the actual document; an age or student discount described for mainland IDs is not a passport guarantee.
Use the museum's own reservation channel for #3 and the park contact for #4; one Shanhaiguan purchase does not cover them. If a form accepts only a mainland ID, do not invent a number. Ask for the authorised manual route before travelling to a timed visit. Keep the seller's confirmation, refund terms and the original passport; no successful foreign-passport checkout or telephone response was tested for this guide.
1. First Pass & the old city 天下第一关·山海关古城
Start at street level, where the tall east gate makes the fortified town's scale understandable. Go up for a closer look at the tower and the open wall section if stairs suit you, then come down for a slower walk through the old city. The town around the monument is part of the pleasure; it should not become a queue of extra paid interiors.
Choose this over an additional beach if military architecture and history are the reason you came. For travellers who have already walked a mountain section of the Great Wall, the contrast is the town and gateway rather than another ridge hike. The night show is a separate choice, not a necessary final stage of the day.
- Time
- 2–3 hours, plus an unhurried meal (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Use a daylight block for the ticketed tower and wall. The operator's readable tariff does not establish a current year-round gate timetable: obtain opening, last admission and the open wall section through visitor service. Evening street access does not imply an open tower.
- Tickets
- Published adult tariff: CNY 50 for First Pass including the Bell and Drum Tower; the CNY 60 version adds Chuang Guandong Cultural Experience Park. Choose the smaller product for this itinerary unless you want that extra stop. Streets and separately ticketed interiors are different things.
- Address
- 河北省秦皇岛市山海关区古城东大街东端,天下第一关(镇东楼). Show 天下第一关景区游客入口; follow the current ticket-office signs rather than walking toward a wall pin.
- Getting there
- From Shaner Siheyuan on South Street, walk through the old-city streets toward the east gate with the hotel's entrance directions. Arriving by car, agree the permitted visitor drop-off and meeting point outside the restricted streets.
- Visit and return
- Hotel → East Street approach → ticket check → open tower/wall section → signed descent → old-city meal → same South Street hotel. Confirm where the wall walk comes down before entering; do not assume a complete circuit or a step-free way up.
2. Old Dragon Head 老龙头
Here the wall meets the Bohai Sea. The seaward fortifications, Chenghai Tower and the broader defensive complex give the inland gate a useful second chapter. Allow time to look back from the permitted shore-side viewpoints as well as walking through the structures; the relationship between stone and water is the reason to come.

On a clear, calm day this is the most distinctive visit in the region. In rough weather it is also the easiest major stop to lose. Keep the museum or an old-city meal as the alternative, rather than paying for a distant car trip after a closure has been announced. A shore photograph does not justify climbing onto unmarked wet rocks.
- Time
- 2–3 hours on site, plus the road transfer (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Visit in usable daylight, with the current gate and last-admission time confirmed by Shanhaiguan visitor service. Strong wind, waves or a closure notice can change access. Do not treat a sunset photograph as evidence of late admission.
- Tickets
- The operator lists CNY 60 adult admission. Check the dated product and refund terms before payment; a boat ride or other entertainment is not included merely because it departs nearby. The default visit stays on land.
- Address
- 河北省秦皇岛市山海关区老龙头路,老龙头景区. Use 老龙头景区游客入口/第一停车场 as the meeting reference and have the driver confirm the permitted pickup.
- Getting there
- Shaner hotel → booked taxi/car to the visitor entrance. From Beidaihe, reserve a cross-coast trip with a return to your exact hotel; this is not a walk from the resort beaches. A scenic shuttle is an option only when its current notice covers your date and ticket.
- Visit and return
- Entrance → signed open route through the fortifications toward Chenghai Tower and the wall at the sea → return along the visitor route to the agreed exit → pickup → the same hotel. Stay off closed rocks and breakwaters; stepping into the sea is unnecessary for the view.
3. China Great Wall Museum 山海关中国长城博物馆
Give the museum a real half-day if you are interested in why and how the wall worked. Its displayed bricks, weapons and other objects add context that a walk on top cannot provide. It is particularly useful before or after the gate and sea-wall pair, rather than as a hurried stop to fill a spare hour.
The official attraction page places the new museum west of Jiaoshan Great Wall. This guide does not add a Jiaoshan climb: that needs its own opening, weather and walking assessment. On a wet day, a reserved museum is a practical substitute; on a closed Monday or without confirmed admission, have lunch and a sheltered hotel break instead of assuming it will admit walk-ups.
- Time
- 2–3 hours, plus transfers (planning allowance)
- Hours
- The museum website gives 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00, Tuesday–Sunday; Monday closure except national statutory holidays. Recheck its current notice before relying on a holiday exception.
- Tickets
- The official site requires a real-name reservation through the WeChat account 山海关中国长城博物馆; save the reservation QR code. Confirm the specific exhibition's admission terms and passport handling at +86 335 766 7777. Special experiences may be separate; this guide does not promise a foreign-passport online checkout.
- Address
- 河北省秦皇岛市山海关区博物馆路1号,山海关中国长城博物馆(角山长城西侧新馆). This is the new museum beside Jiaoshan, not an old-city museum address.
- Getting there
- Book a car from Shaner to the new museum's visitor entrance and agree the return pickup. Do not select an old First Pass museum pin. The nearby mountain park is a different visit; no Jiaoshan climb is required.
- Visit and return
- Hotel → new-museum entrance → reservation check and security → the open permanent galleries and any selected exhibition → visitor-service exit → agreed car → same hotel. Keep the return leg booked if using this as a wet-weather substitute.
4. Pigeon Nest Park 鸽子窝公园
Choose Geziwo for a headland outlook, Eagle Corner Pavilion and the changing view over tidal flats. It offers a different texture from sunbathing or a promenade walk. Bring binoculars if birds matter to you, but plan to enjoy the landscape even when the birds are distant or the tide covers the flats.
Dawn is a possible version of the visit, not the default. First establish actual opening, daylight and weather, then book both the early outward car and the pickup. If that chain cannot be confirmed, go during normal daytime visiting hours after breakfast. Do not step into a protected or closed tidal area for a closer photograph.
- Time
- 1½–2 hours; longer for patient birdwatching (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Confirm the current opening and last admission through the park contact below. The available tourism-authority description is older and gives seasonal hours; it does not establish today's dawn access. Sunrise is optional, only with a confirmed gate time and return car.
- Tickets
- A separate park visit; ask for the current adult price, reservation channel and original-document requirement. The older authority page's CNY 25 fare is not used here as a current quote. Published visitor contact: +86 335 404 1774; we have not test-called it.
- Address
- 河北省秦皇岛市北戴河区鸽赤路25号,鸽子窝公园游客入口. Save 鸽子窝公园, not a similarly named hotel.
- Getting there
- Sheraton hotel → taxi to the park visitor entrance → walk inside. Use a separate car leg for Zhonghaitan; a map of the wider coast is not evidence of an uninterrupted public shoreline path between them.
- Visit and return
- Entry → the signed open headland/viewpoint route → tidal-viewing area where permitted → same visitor exit → pre-agreed pickup → Sheraton. Watch the wetland from designated areas; bird presence, exposed flats and sunrise colours are not guaranteed.
5. Zhonghaitan shore 中海滩·老虎石一带
This is the low-pressure half of the trip. Walk a short open stretch, sit where permitted, and leave time for lunch and a return to the hotel. The rocks around Laohushi and the curve of the central shore offer more variety than a checklist of identically named beaches.

The provincial tourism description identifies Zhonghaitan as part of Beidaihe's coastal appeal. That does not make every waterfront compound public or every sand section open for bathing. Use signed access and the current staffed bathing area if you want to swim; the itinerary remains worthwhile as a land visit when swimming is closed.
- Time
- 1–2 hours, or a relaxed half-day with lunch (planning allowance)
- Hours
- Choose daylight and an open, signed public access. Bathing hours and lifeguarded areas are separate from land access. If staff close the shore or bathing area for weather, keep away from it; a fine-looking sky inland does not override the notice.
- Tickets
- This plan uses the public approach around Zhonghaitan, not an assumed all-inclusive beach pass. Check signs before entering a managed section or Laohushi park; its admission and rentals may be separate. No boat, beach chair or swimming service is included.
- Address
- 河北省秦皇岛市北戴河区中海滩路、保二路南端,老虎石公园周边公共海滨入口. Ask your hotel for 当日开放的中海滩公共入口.
- Getting there
- Sheraton → taxi to the confirmed public access near the south end of Baoer Road. Start with a short land walk and decide there whether to stay; do not commit the party to walking the entire Beidaihe coast back to the hotel.
- Visit and return
- Agreed drop-off → open promenade/shore → turn back at the first closed section or when tired → lunch on the landward streets → pickup from the same agreed road point → Sheraton. Save that point before walking; beach sand is not a car pickup address.
From the actual station or airport to your room
From Beijing, or continuing along the rail corridor
Search China Railway 12306 for the date, exact origin and 山海关 / Shanhaiguan or 北戴河 / Beidaihe destination. Beijing station names are not interchangeable; use the station printed on the ticket. Do not buy “Qinhuangdao” merely because it is the wider city name if a different station fits your hotel better.
History base: 山海关站 → official taxi rank or agreed pickup → Shaner's permitted old-city drop-off → reception at 古城南大街6-4号 → settle luggage → #1. Tell the hotel which station exit your train uses and agree a meeting point after arrival; do not follow an unsolicited driver away from the rank. Repeat the hotel-to-station leg for departure.
Coastal base: 北戴河站 → taxi/booked car → 喜来登酒店,滨海大道16号 → room → dinner or a short local walk. The station is inland, not beside the central beach. Save its Chinese name for the return; 山海关站 and 秦皇岛站 are different departures. If the best train only calls at Qinhuangdao, price the longer hotel transfer before deciding.
Flying into Qinhuangdao Beidaihe Airport
Use the airport code BPE, 秦皇岛北戴河机场, and an operating flight for your date. Marriott places it about 42 km from its Beidaihe hotel; that is a distance reference, not a journey time. Arrange a car to the exact hotel, including flight-delay and late-arrival handling. The airport name does not mean that it is next to the beach or that a flight from your origin runs daily.
Between the two bases, and after the last bus
For the four-night plan, ask the hotels to arrange one transfer with luggage to the new reception. For a Beidaihe day trip to #1 and #2, obtain a written car quote listing both visits, waiting time, road/parking charges and the return to Sheraton. A one-way fare is not a full-day return arrangement.
The operator has published seasonal scenic shuttles and summer routes 501/503 from Beidaihe. Those notices have limited operating dates, so no past timetable is reused here. If a current bus works, confirm its exact return destination, stop and last service before boarding. If you miss it, use the agreed paid car fallback; do not stay at a closed gate hoping that a sightseeing bus will reappear.
On departure day, add time for retrieving bags, road congestion and station security to the live drive estimate. Use the ticket's check-in conditions. The final morning is not the moment to fit in Old Dragon Head from a Beidaihe hotel.
Make the trip work when the coast does not cooperate
| Choice and time | Plan and conditions |
|---|---|
| Wind, waves or lightning: | remove the exposed shore and sea-wall portions when local notices close them. In Shanhaiguan use the museum if open and reserved; in Beidaihe choose a hotel break and an indoor meal. A long cross-coast car trip is not a sensible rescue during disruptive weather. |
| Rain but no closure: | choose one short visit with a straightforward return, not slippery tower stairs followed by a long beach walk. Take a light waterproof layer and grippy shoes; do not rely on a large umbrella in strong wind. |
| Sold out or document booking fails: | ask the issuing operator for its actual authorised alternative. Without confirmed museum or park admission, keep the old-city street walk or open central shore. Do not buy an unrelated night show or a boat ticket simply because it is available. |
| Outside the warm beach season: | favour two history nights or a shorter coastal stay for walks and sea views. Check the hotel's heating and which nearby restaurants are operating. Do not build the trip around swimming, seasonal buses, boat departures or summer evening entertainment. |
Summer demand and national holidays can change queues and road travel substantially. Keep a cancellable room and a flexible sightseeing order when possible; confirm the current local notice before setting out. This guide contains no year-specific festival timetable or guarantee of present sea conditions.
Eat in the base you return to
Shanhaiguan: have lunch in the old-city streets after #1 and a proper dinner near the hotel. The operator's local-food guide describes 浑锅 / hun guo, a mixed hotpot with meat, sour cabbage, tofu and often seafood, and 花生糕 / hua sheng gao, a crumbly peanut sweet. A small hotpot can be a better shared dinner than ordering several large dishes. It is not inherently vegetarian, and the peanut sweet is unsuitable for a peanut allergy.
Beidaihe: use the landward streets around your shore visit for lunch, then eat near the hotel after returning. For seafood, agree the species, weight unit, total and cooking charge before it is prepared; a price per 500 g is not a price per plate. Choose thoroughly cooked food from a busy establishment, and request a simple noodle, rice or vegetable dish when seafood does not suit. Avoid making a long return journey depend on one unverified restaurant's late hours.
For a dawn Geziwo plan, arrange breakfast timing the night before; otherwise eat at the hotel first. Carry drinking water for the wall and coast, then take a seated meal before the next road leg. A snack stop is not a replacement for that rest.
Spend on the right base and the return journey
The published adult First Pass plus Old Dragon Head entry reference is CNY 110, before any other admission, car, hotel or meals. Compare your dated hotel totals and transfer quotes separately. A lower room rate on the wrong side of Qinhuangdao may cost more in repeated drives, especially when three people need the correct beds.
With limited money, stay in one base, choose its two principal visits and cut the cross-coast excursion. With limited time, keep one good wall visit or one good shore visit rather than racing between all five. With limited walking energy, spend on short car legs and a room configuration that lets everyone sleep well. Do not save the return fare by hoping an old seasonal timetable still applies.
Leave from the base where you finish
Return to Beijing when this is a coastal addition to a capital-city trip. For a northeast-bound rail journey, compare the exact Shanhaiguan departures before moving west to Beidaihe; backtracking just to collect luggage can erase the benefit. Use the Hebei guide to compare the coast with Chengde or other province-level choices, rather than adding them as another afternoon stop.
Save the final hotel, departure station and ticket together offline. Leave the hotel with all luggage and original travel documents; the promised end of this itinerary is the right station or airport, not a final beach photograph.
Sources and what remains untested
Source pages were consulted on 4 October 2026. This is a researched planning guide, not a report of a completed booking or visit. Planning durations and the order of visits are editorial recommendations.
- Shanhaiguan operator ticket policy, 13 July 2026: distinct adult products and inclusions. Customer-service panel: the two visitor numbers, not the site footer's unrelated reporting number.
- Great Wall Museum official website: Museum Road address, regular opening, last admission, WeChat real-name reservation and contact. Shanhaiguan's museum profile: new-site location west of Jiaoshan. Ordinary-passport online acceptance and current special-exhibition charges were not confirmed.
- Hebei Tourism description of Geziwo on Beijing's tourism site, 2021: place, address and published visitor phone. Its old price and seasonal opening are deliberately not presented as current. Hebei tourism coast description, 2026: Zhonghaitan's setting, not bathing permission.
- Scenic shuttle notice and summer bus notice: evidence that services are seasonal. They are not an operating timetable for an arbitrary future date.
- Shaner property listing, Sheraton official site and Sheraton room listing: addresses, room distinctions and contact routes. Availability, phone response, passport check-in, exact accessible rooms and pickup performance were not tested.
Gate hours outside the museum, current Geziwo admission, bathing/boat operations, train inventory and dated room rates remain subject to their actual providers. Use the specific contact and fallback beside each visit; an unverified online form does not mean the attraction refuses foreign visitors.
