Jiuzhaigou Give the valleys a full day and keep your bed near the gate

Choose valley sections, not a city attraction checklist

Jiuzhaigou's main visitor circuit is one large scenic area with three connected valleys. These six visits group places you can sensibly combine; they are not six separate ticketed attractions. The water is the reason to come. Spend time at a few shores and falls instead of trying to collect every lake name.

  Make this your priority for transparent, richly coloured water.

• 2. Pearl Shoal waterfall & Mirror Lake 珍珠滩瀑布·镜海

  Choose a waterfall walk, then a still-water contrast if conditions suit.

• 3. Long Lake & Five Coloured Pool 长海·五彩池

  Add the high mountain lake and the small blue pool on the other branch.

• 4. Nuorilang waterfall & the transfer hub 诺日朗瀑布·诺日朗中心站

  A broad waterfall near the junction where you change valleys.

• 5. Rhinoceros Lake & the Shuzheng lakes 犀牛海·树正群海

  A satisfying lower-valley finish with lakes, channels and woodland.

• 6. Upper Rize: Arrow Bamboo, Panda Lake & the forest 箭竹海·熊猫海·原始森林

  An optional extension for a longer visit, not a prerequisite for the iconic lakes.

Use the Y-shaped valley network

Goukou is the entrance at the bottom; Nuorilang is the junction. Shuzheng Valley runs between them. Rize is the branch for Five Flower Lake, Pearl Shoal and the upper forest. Zechawa is the other branch, ending at Long Lake and Five Coloured Pool. Five Flower Lake / 五花海 and Five Coloured Pool / 五彩池 are different places.

Ride up, walk selected sections, ride the long gaps. Follow the first bus's actual destination: park dispatch can set the starting branch. If it starts at Long Lake, do that pair first, return to Nuorilang, then visit Rize. If it starts in Rize, reverse those upper branches. Finish toward the entrance through Shuzheng. The operator's walking guide supports this overall arrangement; its old clock times are not used here.

At entry, get the current open-route leaflet from the visitor centre. At each transfer, show the Chinese destination above and check the bus direction. Your private driver stays outside the scenic transport system; agree an outside pickup point rather than asking for collection at a lake.

Huanglong is a separate scenic area. The railway station and airport names refer to the wider region. Neither a Jiuzhaigou ticket nor a bus marked 黄龙 automatically gets you into Jiuzhaigou. This guide does not add Huanglong to the park day; it needs its own date, ticket and transport plan.

Match your nights to usable park time

A workable full-day rhythm: enter near opening → one upper branch → Nuorilang lunch/transfer → the other upper branch if time and energy allow → Nuorilang waterfall → selected Shuzheng walk → exit bus. Allow roughly 7–9 hours inside including buses, food and queues. Those are planning allowances, not a promise that every listed stop fits. If queues consume the middle of the day, remove upper Rize or one branch before shortening your exit margin.

Book the park entry and its internal bus

The official tariff lists adult admission at CNY 190 plus CNY 90 for the internal bus, total CNY 280, from April 1 to November 15; the recurring off-season tariff is CNY 80 + CNY 80, total CNY 160, from November 16 to March 31. The rail-station/airport shuttle is a separate purchase. Optional insurance is also separate. Do not assume a discount applies to your nationality, age or student document; obtain the eligible product before paying.

The regular peak-season notice gives entry from 08:00 to 14:00 and closure at 18:00. Temporary arrangements can bring opening forward; winter hours and open sections differ. Use the current operator notice and your dated order for entry time. Plan a morning visit rather than treating 14:00 as a useful start for a full circuit.

1. Open the official WeChat mini-program 九寨沟旅游官方平台, or follow 九寨沟 official account → 游览必看 → 门票预订. Choose 九寨沟景区, your park date and the correct admission-plus-bus product.
2. Enter each traveller's actual document details. For a foreign passport, use 护照 only if offered and ensure the issued order shows the correct identity. Carry the same original passport and save the order offline.
3. If passport selection, payment or validation instructions are missing, stop before paying. Call official ticketing +86 837 7769999 with your visit date and passport type, or have your hotel call that desk. Ask how to issue a passport order and which staffed entry lane to use. We have not verified a current end-to-end foreign-passport checkout, so an old instruction to collect paper tickets is not treated as today's rule.
4. Travel to the park only after entry is confirmed. A wait-list request or payment attempt is not admission. Where the official program offers a wait-list, check for successful issuance; if it fails, move the park date and hotel/transport together. Do not buy a claimed gate bypass.

1. Five Flower Lake 五花海

The clear shallows, submerged wood and shifts between blue and green make this the strongest single stop for a first visit. Walk along the open shore instead of waiting for one crowded photograph. Keep the lake if time is tight; shorten the upper forest excursion before cutting it.

Getting there

Enter at 沟口游客中心, then take the park bus into 日则沟. If the first bus is dispatched to another upper stop, follow the operating route and return downhill to 五花海; do not assume you can choose its first destination.

Visit and return

Five Flower Lake stop → open lakeside platforms and boardwalk → signed bus stop for 珍珠滩 or 诺日朗. Finish via the downhill bus to 沟口, then your agreed hotel pickup or walking route.

2. Pearl Shoal waterfall & Mirror Lake 珍珠滩瀑布·镜海

Here the attraction is moving water: a shallow sheet gathers into a broad falling curtain. The descent gives a different view from the upper shoal. Mirror Lake is worth an extra stop when its surface is calm; a windy surface is a good reason to keep moving rather than chase a promised reflection.

Getting there

Use the park bus to 珍珠滩 after Five Flower Lake. Ask staff which downhill boardwalk and pickup point are open before leaving the stop; the waterfall route includes steps.

Visit and return

Pearl Shoal stop → signed shoal and waterfall path → the currently open exit toward 镜海停车场. Rejoin the bus there; visit Mirror Lake only if its stop is operating. If the through-path is closed, use the staff-directed return rather than the road. Continue to 诺日朗 → 沟口 → hotel.

3. Long Lake & Five Coloured Pool 长海·五彩池

Long Lake gives the broad, mountain-framed view; Five Coloured Pool gives a much smaller patch of intense colour. The official visitor guidance places the upper scenic area around 3,100 metres. Skip this extension if you feel unwell or would have to rush it; reaching a higher stop is not an achievement to complete at any cost.

Getting there

At 诺日朗中心站, join the bus for 长海 / 则查洼沟. This is a different branch from Five Flower Lake. Remain on the bus through the long intervening valley instead of treating the map distance as a short walk.

Visit and return

Long Lake stop → viewpoint → open downhill path and steps toward 五彩池 → signed Five Coloured Pool boarding point → bus back to 诺日朗. If the connecting walk is unsuitable or closed, ask staff for the Long Lake return bus before descending. Eventually take 沟口 bus → same hotel.

4. Nuorilang waterfall & the transfer hub 诺日朗瀑布·诺日朗中心站

This stop fits naturally between the upper branches and the lower valley. Keep enough time to look at the width and successive ribbons of water, then make one clear decision: another upper branch while you have time, or the downhill return. Do not confuse a long bus queue with a queue for the waterfall.

Getting there

Use 诺日朗中心站 when changing between 日则沟, 则查洼沟 and the downhill 树正沟 route. Follow waterfall signs from the staffed area; the bus interchange and viewing platform are not the same place.

Visit and return

Transfer hub → designated waterfall viewing path → signed bus boarding area. Check the destination before joining a queue: 长海 goes up the other branch; 沟口 goes toward the exit. Choose the latter for the lower valley or hotel return.

5. Rhinoceros Lake & the Shuzheng lakes 犀牛海·树正群海

The lower valley is about repeated smaller views: water dividing around trees, stepped lakes and changing shorelines. Select one continuous open walking section and enjoy it. Seeing the remaining lakes from the returning bus is preferable to starting another walk that risks the last pickup.

Getting there

Take the downhill bus from 诺日朗 to 犀牛海 or the staffed 树正 stop. Choose the shorter Shuzheng visit when time or legs are running out; you do not have to walk the whole lower valley.

Visit and return

Rhinoceros Lake → the open downhill boardwalk past 老虎海 toward 树正瀑布 and 树正群海 → designated Shuzheng bus stop → 沟口 exit → the same outside-park hotel. Confirm the next boarding point before passing it; stop walking when the remaining bus margin becomes tight.

6. Upper Rize: Arrow Bamboo, Panda Lake & the forest 箭竹海·熊猫海·原始森林

Choose Arrow Bamboo and Panda Lake for more open water and wooded slopes, or the upper forest for a different texture. Panda Lake is a place name, not a panda-viewing promise. On one busy park day, these are the first stops to shorten; on a second visit, they can become the main morning rather than an obligation squeezed into the first.

The upper forest can close seasonally. Check the current operating notice and the bus destination on entry; a summer route description is not winter access permission.

Getting there

Use the currently operated upper 日则沟 bus. Arrow Bamboo Lake and Panda Lake are nearer the core lake sequence than the forest terminus; ride past long gaps rather than committing to every connecting trail.

Visit and return

Open upper stop → a selected lake or forest path → its designated bus stop → downhill to 五花海. Use a through-walk only after confirming its exit and time. Continue via 诺日朗 and 沟口 to the same bed.

Choose a gate-side room or a resort that needs a car

Goukou / 沟口 and Pengfeng / 彭丰 are the practical default. A nearby room lets you return after a long park day without adding a regional transfer. Check the entrance walking route, not just a hotel's use of “Jiuzhaigou” in its name. Jiuzhaigou county town, the railway station and the airport are different bases. The park requires visitors to sleep outside the scenic area; do not plan to stay overnight beside a lake.

For either hotel, enter your dates and every guest's age, choose the named bed type, then read the cancellation and breakfast terms of that rate. Before paying, confirm that reception can register every guest using their actual identity document, including foreign passports where applicable, and will hold the room for your expected arrival. A listed room type does not confirm all check-in conditions. Ask about luggage storage for a one-night plan and confirm an early breakfast option before the park day. These are source-based comparisons, not stays we have personally tested; no live room availability or rate is implied.

Get from the station or airport to your actual bed

From Chengdu by rail: Huanglongjiuzhai / 黄龙九寨站

Book 成都东 → 黄龙九寨 through China Railway 12306, using the exact station on the order. The station is in the Songpan area, not outside the park. The park's arrival guide puts it about 93 km and roughly two road hours from Jiuzhaigou. Treat the rail journey, shuttle wait, mountain drive and hotel drop-off as an arrival-day block.

For the station bus, use WeChat 九旅悦行, the channel named by the park operator. Choose 黄龙九寨站 → 九寨沟, your arrival date and a departure compatible with the train. Confirm the exact drop-off: 沟口 / 景区游客中心 rather than 九寨沟县城. Current fares and departures were not accessible as a stable public timetable, so no old price or train-specific schedule is repeated here.

At the station, use the signed scenic-bus boarding area or the pickup point on your order. Keep the hotel's Chinese name, address and telephone ready. If the bus ends at the visitor centre or another authorised stop, walk only if your hotel confirms the route; otherwise arrange that short last transfer with reception. For a late train or a resort stay, obtain a named pickup, full fare and waiting policy from the hotel before boarding the train.

By air: Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport / 九寨黄龙机场 (JZH)

The airport is also away from the park. The operator describes about 88 km and roughly 1½ hours to Goukou in ordinary conditions. Book a transfer to your named hotel for the actual flight, with a contact who will track delays. Do not rely on a list of historical flight routes or assume the last shuttle will wait; ask the airport at +86 837 7243770 or your hotel about the service for your arrival. Snow or other weather can disrupt flights, as the operator warns.

Protect the departure instead of adding one last lake

For a train, start from the hotel at least four hours before departure as a planning floor: roughly two hours on the road + one hour for road delay/boarding uncertainty + one hour at the station. Your booked bus may require an earlier departure; use that. For a JZH flight, allow at least 4½ hours from hotel departure: roughly 1½ hours driving + one hour road contingency + two hours at the airport, or the airline's longer requirement. These are conservative editorial allowances, not transfer guarantees.

Do not count park exit as hotel departure: you still need the exit bus, road pickup and any stored luggage. In heavy rain, snow or a traffic warning, obtain the operator's current estimate and leave earlier or change the connection. Keep a Chengdu overnight before an important onward international flight rather than depending on a same-day mountain transfer. For the next part of the trip, see Chengdu.

Make lunch easy; enjoy local flavours after the park

Eat breakfast before entry and carry a ready-to-eat lunch, water and a snack. Nuorilang is the practical mid-route stop to look for open food service, but a queue or limited menu should not force you to leave a valley hungry. Do not build a tight park circuit around a long sit-down lunch. Pack out your rubbish and do not feed wildlife.

Back in Goukou/Pengfeng, choose a restaurant close enough to return on foot or use your hotel restaurant after a tiring day. Yak-beef dishes, barley foods and butter tea offer regional flavours; choose a small portion of unfamiliar tea or meat before ordering a full table. Sichuan-style dishes are another easy choice. Check the written price and whether a hotpot or meat dish is sold per person, pot or weight.

For a straightforward vegetarian meal, ask for vegetables, tofu and rice cooked without meat, meat stock or animal fat: 不要肉、肉汤和荤油，请用植物油。 Name any allergy separately; a vegetarian request does not establish allergy-safe preparation. Buy your next day's packed food before returning to the room.

Choose the season for the experience you actually want

Autumn woodland is a major draw, but leaf colour and clear skies cannot be booked. Summer brings green slopes and rain; winter can offer snow and ice with fewer open upper sections. Spring is a different water-and-woodland picture from the autumn photographs. Use park notices for operation, then check the local forecast shortly before travelling.

Wear grippy shoes and carry a waterproof layer and a warmer layer even when Goukou feels mild. This is a bus-and-boardwalk visit with steps, queues and substantial standing; it is not automatically a low-walking outing. For reduced mobility, ask official visitor services at +86 837 7739753 about the precise stops, boarding help and open step-free routes before buying. Requesting an accessible hotel room does not resolve the park route.

The park includes high-altitude areas. Take the visit gently and do not go higher if you feel unwell. Stop and tell a staff member; seek prompt medical help for serious or worsening symptoms. The park publishes rescue number +86 837 7738818. A bus seat, short walk or overnight outside the gate is not a medical guarantee for any individual.

Budget for the whole chain

For one full-price adult park day, the verified fixed starting point is CNY 280 in peak season or CNY 160 off-season. Two adults therefore start at CNY 560 or CNY 320, before rail/air travel, both road transfers, the room, meals and optional insurance. Add a second paid entry only after checking the currently offered second-visit product; do not assume an old winter re-entry offer still applies.

Book in this order: available park date and eligible identity product → cancellable room with the required beds → rail or flight plus both road transfers → any remaining local pickup. Keep payment and issuance distinct. To reduce cost, choose the gate-side hotel over a resort requiring extra cars, shorten the number of paid park days, and bring lunch. Do not save money by removing the final hotel night if that creates a fragile departure.

If tickets, transport or weather fail

No issued park ticket

Stop before travelling to the entrance. Check the official program for another date or an offered wait-list; call ticketing for an unresolved paid order. Move the room and transport within their change deadlines. A hotel booking cannot overrule the park's capacity.

Train delayed or bus missed

Contact the shuttle operator from the issued order and the hotel before leaving the station's staffed area. Ask for the next confirmed service or a licensed car with its full fare and pickup agreed. If no safe confirmed transfer remains, arrange a local room with station assistance and move the park entry; do not accept an unknown roadside shortcut.

Trail or upper branch closed

Ask a uniformed park employee which lower section and return bus are operating. Choose the open Five Flower or Shuzheng section only if staff authorise it; otherwise leave as directed. Do not bypass barriers or walk the bus road to reach a closed boardwalk.

Weather threatens departure

Call the road-transfer operator first, then check the railway/airline order. Bring departure forward, change the onward journey or keep an extra bed before the cancellation deadline. A published two-hour road estimate is not evidence the road is safe or open today.

Sources and limits

The older English walking guide is used for valley structure, not current bus times or trail availability.

The night choices, visit durations, cut order and departure buffers are editorial planning judgments. Live ticket and room stock, current shuttle departures/fares, foreign-passport checkout and exact accessible paths were not field-tested.
