Huzhou Give the city and the water town their own time
Choose Huzhou for a gentle city-and-water-town break. The central streets around Yishang and Xiaoxi give you meals, older houses and small waterways; Nanxun adds a longer canal walk and the gardens and residences of a prosperous silk-trading town. The satisfying combination is one city day and one Nanxun day, rather than a hurried list of everything administered by Huzhou.
Stay three nights for an arrival evening and two full days. Use the central city as one base if avoiding a hotel move matters, or spend the last night in Nanxun to enjoy its quieter morning and evening. Taihu resorts, Moganshan and Anji belong to different trips and require extra time; a Huzhou hotel label alone does not tell you which of these places is outside the door.

One city day and one separate Nanxun day
Open full-size map ↗. Central Wuxing · walk in two short sections. Nanxun district · a separate outing east of the city centre. Southern Nanxun · add to the town day. Huzhou / Huzhou East for city; Huzhou Nanxun for town. This is an editorial relationship diagram, not a navigation map; box position does not encode distance or an entrance. ChinaMile diagram; location sources. Navigation: search the Chinese name in Amap.
With one hotel: arrive and sleep in central Huzhou; use the first full day for Yishang, lunch, Xiaoxi and a long break. If an extra monument matters, the city’s Feiying Pagoda / 飞英塔 is a separate optional stop whose current entry must be checked; it is not needed to complete the street plan. Use the second full day for Nanxun, returning to the central hotel after an agreed pickup. Depart the next morning. Arrival evening + two full days + departure morning equals three nights.
For Nanxun’s evening: keep the first two nights in the city, check out on the second full morning and transfer to a Nanxun hotel that has confirmed luggage storage. Walk the town, sleep there for the third night and leave via your actual rail station the following day. This saves the same-day return journey but adds a hotel move and a different departure transfer.
If you have only one full day, choose. Nanxun is the better fit for a sustained canal-and-garden outing; central Huzhou is the easier choice for a relaxed street-and-food day. Do not squeeze a complete Nanxun visit between a city morning and an early train. Taihu resort areas, Moganshan and Anji are outside this two-day plan and budget.
Warm bowls in the city, noodles in Nanxun
In the Yishang/Red Flag Road area, make qianzhangbao / 千张包 or large wontons / 大馄饨 the seated lunch. Qianzhangbao uses a tofu-skin wrapper around a filling rather than a bread-like bun; fillings and soup may contain pork or seafood. The tofu skin does not make the dish vegetarian. Wontons are also commonly meat-filled.
In Nanxun, order shuangjiao mian / 双交面 for an uncomplicated lunch: noodles with two chosen toppings, often pork and fish. Confirm which toppings the shop offers; two toppings does not mean two complete bowls. Leave a longer restaurant meal for the evening, with vegetables, a staple and a cooked protein instead of turning every stop into another heavy snack.
For a waterside fish meal, agree the species, portion or weight, unit price and cooking charge before ordering. Menu prices, not a general city estimate, determine the bill. Specific restaurant transactions and ingredient handling were not field-tested; use direct questions for allergies and strict diets.
Central streets and Nanxun are different lodging decisions
Default: central Wuxing near Yishang / 衣裳街 and Aishan Square / 爱山广场. This gives a practical city meal base and road access for the Nanxun day. Check the actual lane-to-road walk, lift and noise conditions instead of assuming every old-town inn is easy with luggage.
Nanxun / 南浔古镇 suits a final night when the town itself is the priority. Ask which visitor entrance or roadside pickup your hotel uses, whether luggage can be stored before check-in, and how to arrange the morning station transfer. Taihu lakeside resorts serve a lake-resort stay; they add transfers to both the central lanes and Nanxun and are not the default for this route.
At Trip.com hotels or your preferred booking service, enter all guests and the actual dates, then inspect the map around your chosen base. Compare final room price, beds, cancellation and road access. Confirm foreign-passport check-in directly before committing to a non-refundable room. No named property is claimed to be inspected.
Keep the Nanxun transfer visible
For two adults sharing one room, three nights and two full days, use 3R + A + N + T + CNY 620–860. R is the actual nightly room total; A is the pair’s combined arrival and departure station transfers; N is the actual central-Huzhou–Nanxun transport total for your chosen plan; T is the actual total for any paid interiors for both adults. The remaining CNY 500–680 for meals and CNY 120–180 for local city transport are editorial allowances. The public-street route itself requires no town admission.
Worked planning example: R = CNY 350, A = CNY 120, N = CNY 300 and T = CNY 160 gives CNY 2,250–2,490 for the pair, or CNY 1,125–1,245 each. N and T are editable allowances, not quoted taxi fares or verified ticket prices. Replace them before booking; if no paid interior is selected, T can be zero, but an unpriced interior you still intend to enter cannot.
For a hotel move, replace 3R with the actual two city nights plus the Nanxun night, use N for the one-way move, and update A for the changed departure station. Intercity travel, boats, guides, shopping, Taihu resorts and mountain trips are excluded.
A central walking cluster and a separate water-town outing
1. Yishang Street and Xiaoxi Street · 衣裳街 · 小西街
Start with Yishang for the livelier food-and-shopping atmosphere, then give Xiaoxi a separate short walk. In Xiaoxi, look at the narrow lanes, older residential fronts and small waterway crossings. The contrast matters more than covering every shop or converting the two districts into a race.
This is the lived-in city component of the visit. Restored buildings and new businesses share the streets with older fabric. A courtyard may be a home or private business; public lane access does not imply that every house or exhibition is open.
Hours
Use late morning through the afternoon for the city walk and meal choices. Shops and small exhibitions have individual hours, so an early or late street walk will not provide the same indoor options.
Tickets
No combined ticket is needed for this public-lane plan. Pay only for an individual product you choose; do not assume a restaurant, workshop or exhibition is free because the street is open.
Time
Allow a relaxed half-day for both areas with lunch. They are two walking sections; shorten either if heat, rain or mobility makes the connecting streets inconvenient.
Chinese address
湖州市吴兴区衣裳街历史文化街区、小西街历史文化街区。
Getting there
Use 衣裳街 for the first car drop-off, then follow a current pedestrian map to 小西街 or take a short local car transfer. Save a road-edge hotel or pickup point rather than an inaccessible lane door.
How to visit
Yishang lane loop → wontons or qianzhangbao for lunch → Xiaoxi’s public lanes and water edge → rest. Return near the hotel for dinner. In heavy rain, choose one compact street section with a meal instead of insisting on both.
2. Nanxun canals and Baijianlou · 南浔古镇 · 百间楼
Nanxun is worth the separate journey when you want a water-town day. Walk the southern canal area around Nanxi and Nandong streets, then make Baijianlou your second section for the long water-edge perspective and arcaded residential frontage. Take lunch between the two instead of adding a fast boat simply to tick another activity.
The town’s wealth came partly through the silk trade, and some grand residences mix Chinese layouts with imported architectural details. That does not make every attraction essential. Choose one interior that interests you, then spend the remaining time on the canals and bridges; a ticket bundle is useful only if its named places match what you will actually visit.
Hours
The town streets and the paid houses/gardens have different opening rules. Start in the morning if you want an interior. Ask for its entry cut-off at the visitor centre; an evening canal walk does not keep museums or gardens open.
Tickets
General town access is free; paid interior sights, boats, performances and transport are separate. The current ticket platform lists changes to bundle contents, so read the included attraction names before payment. Foreign-passport online purchase and counter handling were not tested; ask the staffed 南浔古镇游客中心 to confirm before buying a non-refundable product. The public-street plan remains usable if an interior cannot be booked.
Time
Allow a full outing, including the transfer from central Huzhou and meal breaks. Within the town, use two walking sections rather than trying to cover every residence.
Chinese address
湖州市南浔区南浔古镇;南西街、南东街、百间楼。
Getting there
From central Huzhou, arrange a road transfer to 南浔古镇游客中心 and agree the return pickup/time before leaving. It is not a city-centre stroll. If arriving directly by rail, use 湖州南浔 station, then a local transfer to the town; the station is not inside the canal quarter.
How to visit
Visitor centre and current area map → southern canals → selected garden if available → lunch → Baijianlou public waterfront → prearranged roadside pickup or Nanxun hotel. The base route requires no boat. If choosing a boat, confirm its landing place and whether it returns to the starting pier; retain a land route to your pickup.
3. Xiaolianzhuang garden · 小莲庄
Choose Xiaolianzhuang as the one interior addition if gardens interest you. Its large pond and surrounding pavilions make a different experience from the narrow town canals; smaller rockwork spaces and covered routes reward slowing down. Lotus flowers are seasonal, not something a ticket guarantees year-round.
The municipal archive places the garden beside Jiayetang Library, but an adjacent building is not automatically included or open. Check the named ticket coverage. A garden plus a full canal walk is a coherent day; several large houses as well may turn it into a checklist.
Hours
Confirm the current daytime entry cut-off at the Nanxun visitor centre or the garden entrance before buying. This guide does not turn old seasonal opening tables into a guarantee for your date.
Tickets
Use the selected day’s official-area offer or a recognised platform product explicitly naming 小莲庄. Compare a single sight with the current bundle, including its document rules and refund terms. No unverified current price is included in the base budget.
Time
About 1–1.5 hours is an editorial allowance within the Nanxun day, not extra time for every neighbouring house.
Chinese address
湖州市南浔古镇南部,小莲庄;靠近嘉业堂藏书楼。
Getting there
Walk from the southern town/visitor-centre section using the current scenic-area map. Do not confuse 小莲庄 in Nanxun with 莲花庄 in central Huzhou.
How to visit
Confirm ticket/entry → pond and pavilions → selected rockwork and corridors → continue the town lunch and canal walk. If closed or document handling is unavailable, skip the interior and give the public canals and Baijianlou more time.
Book the station for the part of Huzhou you mean
Huzhou / 湖州, Huzhou East / 湖州东 and Huzhou Nanxun / 湖州南浔 are different rail stations. Search actual dates at China Railway 12306 and compare the complete journey to the intended hotel. For a central-city stay, inspect 湖州 and 湖州东 arrivals with their local transfer; for Nanxun first, inspect 湖州南浔. Do not type only “Nanxun station” from an old construction article and assume it is the current official booking name.
The simplest first arrival is a licensed taxi from the signed station rank with the Chinese hotel address ready. If continuing from a Shanghai or Hangzhou airport, allow the airport formalities, baggage and rail-station transfer separately. This guide does not promise a direct airport shuttle or a particular through train.
For the central-city–Nanxun day, a prearranged road transfer is the uncomplicated choice. Agree the exact Nanxun pickup point, return time, complete fare and whether waiting/tolls are included before departure. A current bus or rail option can cost less, but use the actual timetable and terminal transfers for both directions; do not rely on an old tourist-bus article. If a return cannot be secured, stay in the city or deliberately book a Nanxun overnight instead.
Continue to Hangzhou or a different lake city
Hangzhou adds West Lake and a larger city stay. Suzhou offers another garden-and-canal choice; if you already spent a full day on Nanxun interiors, choose the next city’s priorities selectively rather than repeating every similar house. Jiaxing is a smaller lake-and-food stop. Check the actual departure and arrival station names before reserving the next hotel.
Town access, interior tickets and transport have separate rules
Sources reviewed on . Government and local reporting describe the city streets, Nanxun’s free general access and the garden’s historic layout. The ticket platform distinguishes free town streets from paid interiors and names changes to its bundle; it is a product listing, not proof that every foreign passport can complete checkout. No current garden price or exact local-transfer fare is asserted.
Foreign-passport admission, payment, hotel check-in and transport were not field-tested. The complete public-street route remains available without a boat or paid interior. Visit duration, base selection and editable cost inputs are editorial judgments; current closures, ticket terms and weather notices override old visitor descriptions.
