Chenzhou A southern Hunan landscape trip where the right overnight base matters as much as the view.
Choose Chenzhou for water and rock landscapes rather than a dense city sightseeing list. Xiaodongjiang’s narrow river and changing mist have a very different feel from the open reservoir at Dongjiang Lake; Gaoyiling adds sculpted red-rock ridges and green water. An evening on Yuhou Street gives the trip a simple urban finish.
The essential decision is where to sleep. Dongjiang Lake is in Zixing 资兴, within the wider Chenzhou area, not beside Chenzhou West railway station. For the first visit below, use two nights near Dongjiang’s visitor centre and a final night in Chenzhou city. This gives one full Dongjiang day and a second day for Gaoyiling followed by the city. Do not book three central-city nights and assume the famous early river view is downstairs.

Choose the places before booking the rooms

Zixing / Dongjiang visitor centre: sleep here before the early river visit. Gaoyiling: the next day’s separate landscape stop on a booked transfer to Chenzhou. Bailang: an alternative lakeshore outing requiring its own vehicle route. Yuhou: the final city evening. These places do not share one walkable resort entrance.
If mist is absent, keep the river scenery and your chosen lake route rather than paying for someone’s guarantee of a photograph. If the ridge is unsafe, choose Bailang only when lakeshore and road conditions are also suitable; otherwise transfer to the city for a shorter stay. Mangshan 莽山 is a separate southern excursion and is not squeezed into this two-day plan.
Choose a base that fits this trip
Two nights near 东江湖旅游区游客中心 in Zixing: the default for the mist-and-lake day. Check the hotel’s actual map pin, morning access to the visitor centre and whether it can store luggage or arrange the next day’s vehicle. A listing called “Dongjiang Lake view” can be on a different part of the lake.
Final night in central Chenzhou: choose near a vehicle-accessible street convenient to Yuhou or the city’s dining areas. This lets you finish the ridge day, eat in town and leave from the station the next morning.
Chenzhou West station area: use for a very early departure if necessary, accepting that dinner and Yuhou may need a separate ride. Confirm passport check-in, room occupancy, cancellation terms and luggage arrangements for both hotels before paying. The budget explicitly separates the two bases.
To find a room, open Chenzhou hotel listings and enter your dates, two adults and two separate bookings: two nights and one night. Use the map to choose Zixing near the Dongjiang visitor centre for the first two nights, then central Chenzhou for the last night; confirm the actual entrance, passport check-in and cancellation conditions with the property before paying. This is a booking search, not a checked room or a guaranteed rate.
Make the meals part of the day
Try 栖凤渡鱼粉 Qifengdu fish rice noodles as a breakfast or lunch choice where offered: fish and chilli give the broth its character. Choose the spice level before it is made and expect fish bones unless the kitchen confirms otherwise. This is not automatically a mild noodle soup.
At Dongjiang, order one clearly priced fish dish, a vegetable and rice for two adults. Ask the fish species, weight unit and cooking charge before accepting a whole fish; “local lake fish” on a sign does not verify where it was caught. Choose fully cooked fish rather than relying on a raw preparation.
For the final city dinner, Yuhou works as a location, not a promise of a particular checked restaurant. 临武鸭 Linwu duck is another regional speciality to look for, but do not order both a large duck dish and a whole fish by default. Meals in the budget are allowances rather than verified menu prices.
The places in detail
1. Xiaodongjiang and Dongjiang Lake · 小东江 · 东江湖旅游区
The river scene depends on the relationship between cold water and warmer air. Look at the layers of banks, trees and reflections as well as the mist; it may be thick, thin or absent. Official sources describe slightly different warm-season windows, so spring-to-autumn is a seasonal tendency, not a promise for one particular morning.
A fisherman casting a net is a managed photographic subject when offered, not a guaranteed spontaneous encounter. The broader lake is a different experience: islands, open water and wooded slopes. Choose the shorter river route when photography and an easy pace are enough, or the boat-and-cave product when you actively want the extra water journey and interior visit.
Hours
Use the early entry offered for your visit date if mist is the priority. Warm-season mornings and evenings are favourable, but neither a precise opening hour nor visible mist is guaranteed throughout the year.

Getting there
From a nearby Zixing hotel, arrange the short ride or verified walk to the visitor centre, then use the official scenic transport to the open river boardwalk stops. Return by the signed internal transport to the same visitor centre.
How to visit
Start with the permitted river boardwalk, then continue along your purchased route. Add a lake cruise and 兜率岛/兜率灵岩 only if the selected operating package includes them and you want a full day. Keep the visitor-centre return separate from the hotel ride.
2. Gaoyiling · 高椅岭
The appeal is the shape of the terrain: broad smooth sandstone, narrow saddles and steep drops to water. Walk slowly enough to notice the contrast between red rock and vegetation. This is the more exposed and physically demanding part of the suggested trip, not a flat lakeside promenade.
Allow a half day so you can stop, rest and turn around without a rushed train deadline. The current guide does not certify an accessible route through the whole site. Travellers who dislike heights or repeated steps should choose the Bailang road-and-lakeshore alternative below, leaving Gaoyiling for a different trip.

Start in the morning and finish in daylight. Current seasonal entry and closing times must be read in the operator’s dated notice; the ridge is not a night-hiking route.

Getting there
Book Zixing hotel → 高椅岭旅游区游客服务中心 → Chenzhou hotel, including luggage and waiting. Use the official entrance rather than a location pin for an unfenced rock seen in a social-media photograph.
How to visit
Follow the designated visitor paths and barriers; choose a shorter out-and-back when steps, exposure or heat are uncomfortable. Skip the ridge during thunderstorms, heavy rain or a closure. Do not seek an unofficial route to avoid admission.
3. Bailang lakeshore · 白廊
Bailang is for the wider lake rather than the narrow mist corridor. The attraction is space: water, islands and wooded shorelines. It suits a slower outing when you want scenery without Gaoyiling’s ridge walk, provided you still arrange the road journey.
Use it instead of Gaoyiling on the second full day, not in addition to every lake product and a mountain hike. The recommendation does not include a boat charter. A street-side boat offer needs its own licensed operator, route, price and return arrangement; none is necessary for this simple lakeshore plan.

Daylight in suitable weather. Skip exposed lakeshore stops during storms and do not infer current access from an old photograph.

Getting there
Book a return or onward road vehicle to 白廊, naming the specific public lakeshore stop and pickup. It is not a short extension on foot from the Xiaodongjiang boardwalk.
How to visit
Choose one legal stopping area and a short public-path out-and-back, then lunch. Do not walk along a traffic lane for a photograph or assume a scenic road has a continuous pedestrian path.
4. Yuhou Street · 裕后街
Yuhou is a useful change of pace after the countryside. Restored and reconstructed architecture, lights and restaurants make it an evening leisure district, not an untouched ancient town. Its role in this itinerary is to let you eat and walk without another rural transfer.
Arrive before you are exhausted, choose one restaurant and leave time to sit down. You do not need to buy a performance or wait for a particular lighting sequence to complete the city evening. The following morning remains free for the station transfer.

Late afternoon or early evening works for the walk and meal. Businesses and performances run their own schedules; no nightly show is promised.

Getting there
After the scenic day, check in at your Chenzhou hotel and use a taxi or a current walking route to 裕后街. Save a pickup on the vehicle-accessible edge of the district.
How to visit
Have dinner, walk a manageable section of the river frontage and return to the hotel. In high water or heavy rain, skip the river edge and use an ordinary city restaurant.
A workable stay, from arrival to departure
Arrival day · night 1 in Zixing: arrive at Chenzhou West or the station on your ticket, take the booked transfer directly to your Zixing hotel, and finish the next morning’s Dongjiang reservation. Have dinner nearby and settle the visitor-centre transfer before bed.
First full day · night 2 in Zixing: use the morning admission offered for your date and visit the river boardwalk first. Continue on the selected shorter viewing route, or use the full lake-and-cave product if booked and operating. Return to the visitor centre by its internal service, then to the same hotel for a rest and dinner. Do not wait indefinitely for mist that may not appear.
Second full day · night 3 in Chenzhou: check out after breakfast. Take the prebooked vehicle to Gaoyiling, keeping luggage in the agreed secure arrangement, and allow a half day for the signed walk. Lunch, transfer to the Chenzhou hotel, rest, then Yuhou for dinner and a short riverfront walk. If heights or steps do not suit you, replace Gaoyiling with a modest Bailang outing and onward transfer.
Departure morning: transfer to the exact station on the ticket. Do not put an early-mist session in front of a tight same-morning train. For one full day and two nights, stay in Zixing and do only Dongjiang, with departure transport arranged separately.
Book the arrival and the return
Search Chenzhou West 郴州西 on 12306 for high-speed services on your actual date. Chenzhou 郴州 is another station; neither name means you have reached Zixing or the lake visitor centre. Save both hotel addresses in Chinese.
Book three distinct ground legs for the suggested plan: arrival station → Zixing hotel; Zixing hotel → 高椅岭旅游区游客服务中心 → Chenzhou hotel, with waiting and luggage agreed; and Chenzhou hotel → departure station. The operator shuttle inside Dongjiang does not replace any of these. Ask for a new quote if substituting Bailang.
The Dongjiang operator’s purchase page directs visitors to its WeChat service. Use 东江湖旅游区 and select the real date, route and traveller details. If the form cannot handle a foreign passport, ask the operator at 4000-0735-86, or have the hotel contact it before the excursion. The domestic hotline may not connect from overseas. For Gaoyiling, use the operator’s 高椅岭旅游区 account or a dated product that explicitly accepts your document; do not pay a nonrefundable transfer until admission is resolved.
A transparent budget for two
For two adults, one shared room, two Zixing nights plus one Chenzhou night and two full days, use 2Z + C + A + G + T + ¥660–940. Z is a nightly Zixing room quote; C is the city room quote; A combines arrival station–Zixing and city hotel–departure station transfers; G is the Zixing–Gaoyiling–Chenzhou vehicle, including waiting and luggage; T is both adults’ selected Dongjiang and Gaoyiling admissions and included scenic transport.
The editorial allowance is ¥500–680 for meals, ¥60–100 for short hotel/visitor-centre or city rides, and ¥100–160 for water and contingency. Example inputs Z = ¥280, C = ¥300, A = ¥220, G = ¥400 and T = ¥500 produce ¥2,640–2,920 for two. These are assumptions, not current quotes or a ticket tariff.
Replace G and T when using Bailang instead of Gaoyiling; do not add a nonexistent ridge ticket to that version. The total excludes intercity fares, private guiding, a Mangshan excursion, shopping and any optional activity beyond the selected packages. A different Dongjiang boat product can materially change T.
Sources and planning conditions
Read on 17 October 2026. Government sources establish the regional geography and landscape choices. Their mist-season descriptions differ slightly, so this guide describes a warm-season tendency without guaranteeing a view. The operator booking page confirms the purchase entry and hotline, but did not expose a stable current tariff or tested passport workflow. Gaoyiling’s old summer hours are not reused for October. Visit lengths, base choices, route order and allowances are editorial; no hotel, ride, meal or payment flow was field-tested.
