CHENGDU · A FULL DAY OUT
Leshan Giant Buddha from Chengdu
Give Leshan a full 9–11 hours from your Chengdu hotel and back. Choose the land visit for temple and cliff-side detail, or a daytime boat for the complete river-facing figure. Start with one; reserve both train journeys before treating a second viewpoint as part of the day.
The UNESCO-listed Buddha is carved into the riverside cliff, so the viewing angle changes the experience. The train takes you to Leshan city; a separate road journey and gate or pier approach still stand between the station and the Buddha.
Updated 4 October 2026 · Official rail and station sources checked; some scenic instructions are available only as attributed reproductions. Individual source limits appear below.
Before you set out
Default: keep your Chengdu room, leave large bags there, book Chengdu East → Leshan and a usable return, then choose a daytime land ticket if everyone can manage sustained stairs. Choose the boat instead when the frontal view matters more than entering the temple-and-cliff setting. A boat reduces climbing, but pier access and boarding still need checking.
- Land · 白天游山
- Climb to Lingyun Temple and the Buddha-head area. Add the managed route to the feet only when open and suitable for everyone. Allow 3–4 hours around the site, including the approach and ordinary queues; a holiday queue can take longer.
- Daytime boat · 白天游江 / 白天游船
- See the full seated figure against the cliff from the river. Allow 2–3 hours for ticket handling, pier access, waiting, the ride and departure from its endpoint. This is an editorial allowance, not a promised sailing duration. A night cruise or local cross-river ferry is a different product.
- Both viewpoints
- Keep the second optional. Buy it only after allowing the transfer from the first exit, its actual queue and your station margin. A combined plan that removes lunch, rest or the return margin is too tight; use another day or an overnight stay.
Choose the product before paying
In WeChat or Alipay, search 大佛旅游; the boat operator's reproduced notice names this channel. For land admission, the reproduced scenic booking guide also describes 乐山大佛景区 → 智游大佛 → 门票预订 / Ticket Booking. Select daytime land or daytime boat, your date and document type; check that an order was issued, rather than merely requested. Do not replace a passport number with a Chinese ID number.
Price boundary: the reproduced notices list CNY 80 for standard daytime land admission and CNY 70 for the daytime boat. These are published references, not a verified live quote. Concessions, international-visitor offers and the final dated total need the actual checkout or staffed ticket desk. Train fares, station transfers, food and any sightseeing vehicle are separate. We have not established a current all-in day price.
Bring the original passport used in each booking. The January 2025 land-rule announcement describes entry with the booked document; ask for staffed inspection if the reader cannot handle it. The June 2026 boat notice gives a different procedure: passport holders take their original document to a ticket window for a paper boarding ticket. These are reproduced instructions, not a tested foreign-passport purchase. If the document option or validation remains unclear, resolve it with the ticket desk before relying on the booking. Land announcement · Boat announcement.
Use the scenic committee's current information and 大佛旅游 for dated opening, ticket slots and operating changes. The published tourist contact is 0833-2355557. Ask separately whether the land area, 佛脚平台 and your chosen boat are open. If online purchase fails, ask whether the north or south visitor-centre window can issue your product and whether stock remains; a window is not a reservation.
Get there and back
Chengdu hotel → Chengdu East → Leshan
Search Chengdu East / 成都东 → Leshan / 乐山 in China Railway 12306, then search the reverse direction for the same day. From a Chunxi Road base, use Metro Line 2 toward Longquanyi / 龙泉驿 to Chengdu East Railway Station / 成都东客站, follow railway departure signs and allow for the station walk. A legal taxi to 成都东站 is the simpler alternative with luggage or a difficult hotel-to-Metro walk. This reuses the Chengdu station approach.
Use the issued station, not just the city name. If a suitable search result uses Chengdu South / 成都南, plan that station instead. For a return there, Line 1 to Tianfu Square and Line 2 to Chunxi Road reconnect to the default hotel area. Do not travel to Chengdu East for a South-station ticket. The destination for this outing is 乐山站, not 乐山北站 or 峨眉山站.
Read the actual train duration, price and available seats for your date. The railway's station-pair notice confirms the connection; its temporary extra-train times are not a timetable for this guide. As an editorial starting allowance, aim to reach the departure station 45–60 minutes before the booked train, increasing this for holidays, assistance or unresolved passport checks. The station's boarding cutoff controls. Use the original passport and the staffed lane when needed; the passport train guide covers account and document problems.
Leshan station → the correct visitor centre
Default to the official taxi rank for the station-to-scenic leg. The June 2026 station notice directs arriving passengers through the covered walkway to 宝莲路巡游出租车专用区域. App-booked cars collect in 站前广场地下停车场网约车专属区域. Public-bus boarding is at 公交总站, reached through the underground passage; the surface 高铁乐山站 stop is drop-off only under that trial layout. Follow current signs if they have changed.
For the land route or a confirmed north-side boat, show 乐山大佛北游客中心. For the Wuyou boat, show 乐山大佛南游客中心. These are service points, not interchangeable entrances. Allow 45–60 minutes in the plan for pickup and road travel, plus the separate approach below; this is a conservative planning input, not a measured journey or fare quote. Check current traffic and the permitted drop-off with your driver.
Bus alternative: at 公交总站, ask which current service reaches your selected visitor centre and where to get off; show its Chinese name. No current bus frequency, fare or last return has been established here. Choose the taxi default if the bus destination, remaining wait or return cannot be resolved. For a hired car from Chengdu, agree both collections, the exact product and exit, waiting and toll charges before departure; do not assume the vehicle can reach the ticket gate.
Why this is a full day: one worked planning budget is 1¼ hours to reach and pass through the Chengdu station + 1 hour on the selected train + 1 hour for Leshan pickup and road transfer + 3½ hours for the approach, land visit and lunch + 1½ hours for the road return and station buffer + 1 hour rail + ¾ hour to your hotel = 10 hours.
Replace those inputs with your issued trains and live road estimates. The 9–11 hour envelope is for one main experience under workable conditions; extended queues, assistance or both products can exceed it. It is not a last-train calculation.

Visit route
Land: North Gate → temple → Buddha → East Gate
The July scenic-area route explanation, available as a reproduction, places North Visitor Centre about 1.9 km from North Gate. Use the signed riverside walk or the current paid sightseeing vehicle to 北门; confirm its fare and stop before boarding. The approach vehicle does not remove the stairs inside.
- North Gate / 北门: complete ticket and passport checks in the independent-visitor lane. Ask about the active descent, the feet platform and the exit before beginning the climb. The visitor-centre service queue, gate queue and cliff-route queue are separate.
- Uphill path / 上山香道 → Lingyun Temple / 凌云寺: follow the managed ascent and pause at the temple. Give the open halls and cliff setting time; respect worshippers and any restrictions on photography inside.
- Buddha-head viewing area / 佛头观景台: this close angle reveals the head and surrounding rock. Stop here before committing to the descent queue. Ask for its current wait and the remaining exit route; a paid ticket does not make the queue fit your train.
- Lingyun Plank Path / 凌云栈道 → Buddha-foot platform / 佛脚平台, when open: the published route uses these names. Follow the day's staffed direction and barriers. Plan for steep stairs and the full onward exit, not just going down. Older directions using 九曲栈道 are not permission to enter a closed path.
- East Gate / 东门: follow the signed exit and then the permitted walking or sightseeing-vehicle connection to a legal pickup. Send the driver your actual pickup pin. East Gate is different from North Gate and North Visitor Centre; do not assume the taxi can wait at the gate itself.
Shorten at the top: if the feet platform is closed, the queue consumes your margin or someone cannot manage the stairs, keep the open temple and upper viewpoints. Ask staff for the permitted exit avoiding the descent before joining it; a controlled lane may not allow reversal. If upper access itself is closed, do not invent another way in. Current staff routing overrides this published sequence.
Boat: choose the boarding and landing pair
The operator notice reproduced in June 2026 describes two daytime routes. Treat them as product choices to confirm at purchase, not as two boats guaranteed to be running today:
- North side · 嘉州渡码头 → 大佛本体 → 八仙渡码头
- Start with the North Visitor Centre ticket service and follow the signs to Jiazhoudu. The product lands at a different pier, named 八仙渡 in the notice and 八仙洞 in other visitor guidance. Have staff identify the landing on the current map and set your pickup there; do not leave bags or a waiting car at the departure pier without a return plan.
- South side · 乌尤寺码头 → 大佛本体 → 乌尤寺码头
- Start at South Visitor Centre, validate the ticket and ask for the current connection via Lianhua Bridge / 莲花桥 to Wuyou pier. Published descriptions differ between walking and a shuttle after the bridge; do not assume either is available without the desk's direction. This published boat route returns to its own boarding pier.
Before joining a boarding queue, settle the next departure, expected landing and ticket-check cutoff with staff. Follow crew instructions and keep the landing name available for the car back to the station. The river view gives the figure and cliff together; it does not enter the temple or feet platform. Visibility and a clear photograph depend on the actual weather and position aboard.
Adding the boat after walking: finish the permitted land exit first, obtain the real transfer to the operating pier and ask about its wait. Add that to the boat and road-to-station time. If the sum reaches your return margin, skip the boat. Avoid buying a second product simply because it is nearby on a map.
Conditions: when to change the plan
- Rain, high water or a suspended boat
- Check boat and land status separately. Change to land only if it is open, everyone accepts the stairs and admission is available. Otherwise keep a Chengdu museum-and-tea day, or, if already in Leshan, stop waiting and return by road to the railway station. Request any refund through the original seller; closure does not establish every product's refund terms.
- Long descent queue or closed feet platform
- Keep the upper visit if its open route is worthwhile to you. Decide before descending; never use an unofficial bypass. Drop the second viewpoint and a city food detour before cutting the station margin.
- Children, limited stamina or a mobility aid
- Choose one product with a meal and rest. For the boat, ask about the exact pier approach, boarding steps, aid dimensions and available assistance; lower climbing does not establish wheelchair access. For land, confirm an upper-only exit. If required assistance cannot be arranged, choose a more manageable Chengdu day.
- Holiday demand or a late start
- Secure admission and both train tickets before leaving. The usual time envelope can expand sharply. If the remaining site window cannot fit the approach, one visit and the return, move Leshan to another day rather than turning an afternoon arrival into a rushed two-product visit.
Carry drinking water, weather protection and shoes suitable for wet stone and stairs. Leave bulky luggage at your hotel when possible; no station or scenic luggage-storage service has been verified for this plan. A stored bag must be recoverable from the place where you actually finish.
Continue or return
Set the leaving time from your booked train
Work backwards from the issued departure: train time − station allowance − current pickup and road time − exit-to-pickup walk. For example, 45 minutes inside the station + 45 minutes for pickup and traffic + 20 minutes to leave the site means stopping the visit at least 1 hour 50 minutes before the train. These are example inputs, not a guarantee; use longer current estimates and add disruption margin.
At the land exit or boat landing, reach the agreed legal pickup and show 乐山站. At the station, read the current gate and use the passport lane indicated by staff. After your train reaches Chengdu East, take Line 2 toward Xipu / 犀浦 to Chunxi Road, then walk to your hotel. If it arrives at Chengdu South, use the South-station connection above. If the Metro journey has ended, use the station's licensed taxi rank with the saved hotel address.
If you will miss the train: stop the optional visit, inspect your original order's change options and contact 12306 or the station ticket office. A new seat, fee waiver or late boarding is not guaranteed. If no workable same-day return remains, confirm a Leshan room and passport check-in with the property, tell your Chengdu hotel and book the next feasible train. Do not board another train on the assumption that the missed ticket transfers automatically. 12306 ticket-change guidance.
When an overnight makes sense
Return to Chengdu for the simplest one-viewpoint outing. Stay in Leshan only when you deliberately want a slower visit, an evening in town or a separate onward stage and have arranged the room, luggage and next ride. Keeping the original Chengdu room may mean paying for two rooms that night; settle cancellation terms before changing the plan.
Mount Emei / 峨眉山 is another travel stage. Sharing a UNESCO listing does not make a Buddha visit and a full mountain visit one outing. If Emei is next, select your mountain base and next day's transport separately. Do not add the Panda Base or Sanxingdui to this default Leshan day. Return to the Chengdu day-trip comparison to decide what this day replaces, or keep a central Chengdu base for the return.
Sources and limits
Research was completed on 4 October 2026. Railway identity rules, the station transfer notice and heritage context were read on their official sites. Scenic route, land-booking and boat-product details have weaker access: the original WeChat articles returned verification pages, other official portals failed to load, and the named reproductions are identified individually below. They do not establish live admission, queue time, current fares, open cliff paths or a sailing on your date.
The whole-day budget, station buffers, visit allowances and decision to keep one main viewpoint are editorial planning choices. No journey, purchase, wheelchair route or visitor experiment was performed. Follow the issued product and current staff instructions where they differ.
