REAL TRAVELLER ANSWER

What to do when dust triggers symptoms on a China trip

Reduce exposure when familiar mild dust symptoms interrupt a China trip, recognise when to seek medical help and avoid assuming a new cough is only an allergy.

THE SHORT ANSWER

If symptoms are mild and familiar and breathing is normal, pause the outdoor day and move to a cleaner indoor space. Seek medical help for breathing difficulty, unusual symptoms or deterioration instead of assuming dust allergy; after returning home, use your local medical service.

What to do when dust triggers symptoms on a China trip

If symptoms are mild and familiar and you are breathing normally, pause the outdoor day and move into a cleaner indoor space. If breathing is difficult, symptoms are unusual or you are getting worse, get medical help rather than assuming it is your usual dust allergy. If you have already returned home after the trip, use your local medical service; 120 is the mainland China emergency number.

A two-week spring trip triggered a known dust allergy

The traveller reported a known dust allergy after a two-week spring trip. That history can guide exposure reduction, but it does not identify the cause of a new cough, wheeze or fever. Dust can irritate the eyes and airways as well as trigger allergic symptoms. National Health Commission guidance.

What is happeningActions and conditions

What is happening: Mild, familiar nose/eye symptoms; normal breathing

What to do: Move indoors and reduce dust exposure. Follow an existing clinician-directed treatment plan. If you need medicine advice, show a pharmacist your current medicines and medical history.

What is happening: Symptoms are worsening, disrupting sleep, different from usual or not improving with your normal treatment

What to do: Arrange a clinical assessment. New or increased breathlessness, coughing blood or worsening asthma needs prompt medical attention; use an emergency department if urgent outpatient assessment is unavailable.

What is happening: Severe breathlessness, gasping or unable to speak normally; tight/heavy chest; blue/grey/pale lips; sudden confusion or collapse

What to do: Call 120 now in mainland China. Do not drive yourself or continue sightseeing. Sudden throat/tongue swelling or difficulty swallowing is also an emergency.

These distinctions follow NHS breathlessness guidance, allergic-rhinitis guidance and anaphylaxis warning signs. They do not diagnose the cause of your symptoms.

Reduce exposure now

  • During outdoor dusty weather, close the room’s windows and use an air purifier if available. Request damp wiping or mopping instead of dry dusting; step away while cleaning is done.
  • Wash exposed skin and change dusty clothes; shower if possible. Reduce or postpone the next outdoor activity instead of trying to push through it.
  • If travel outside is unavoidable, use a well-fitting N95 or higher-grade particulate mask and keep exposure brief. If you have a heart/lung condition or cannot tolerate a mask, get individual advice; a mask is not treatment for breathing difficulty.

The NHC’s dust guidance supports staying indoors, wet cleaning, purification, washing and particulate protection. It does not guarantee symptom relief or make every hotel room suitable.

If the hotel room is dusty

Ask the front desk for a different cleaned room and inspect it before moving. Request damp cleaning and ask whether an air purifier is available. If the property cannot provide a room you can tolerate, move to another property after confirming a usable room and total cost; a refund from the first hotel is a separate request. If your symptoms require care, deal with that before searching for another room.

Get care without guessing a Chinese medicine

For non-emergency assessment, ask reception to identify a nearby licensed hospital or clinic that is open, then confirm it accepts your passport and can assess your symptoms today. Bring the passport, medicine packaging or a medication list, known allergies and a short symptom timeline. If you have travel insurance, its assistance service can help arrange care and explain billing; do not wait for insurer approval in an emergency.

In Beijing, one official booking route is the International Service Beijing (京通) mini program in WeChat or Alipay: switch to En for outpatient appointments. The city medical guide also lists hospitals offering foreign-language services. That is a Beijing route, not an appointment guarantee elsewhere.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician to check an unfamiliar medicine’s active ingredients and suitability with your current treatment. Do not add several cold/allergy products or change doses based on a translated brand name. NHS advice recommends clinical review when symptoms worsen, affect daily life or do not respond to pharmacy treatment.

While waiting, follow the dispatcher and any existing clinician-written emergency plan. Use prescribed emergency treatment as directed by that plan. If outside mainland China, substitute the local emergency number.

Checked 13 September 2026. Before another outdoor day, ask your hotel for the local dust/air-quality warning and change the itinerary if exposure remains high. Ongoing or new symptoms after returning home still need assessment; ‘no seasonal allergy’ does not rule out another cause.
