Zhujiajiao or Xitang: choose one water town and plan the whole return

Choose Zhujiajiao for the simpler day from a Shanghai hotel. Metro Line 17 and a walk reach free public lanes, a large stone bridge and optional gardens or boats. Choose Xitang for its covered canal-side corridors and an evening stay, accepting the extra road transfer and admission arrangement.

Give either town its own outing. This guide starts and finishes at your Shanghai hotel; an overnight branch adds one Xitang bed. Neither town belongs between a flight arrival and a tight next-day commitment.

Do not combine both towns in a day

Before you set out: which town fits?

Zhujiajiao: the first water-town day

Pick this for canal views, North Street snacks and a manageable return to the same Shanghai bed. Allow 7–9 hours door to door: about 1½–2½ hours each way from a central hotel and 3–4 hours in town. Add a garden or boat only when the queue fits. These are planning allowances, not measured journey times.

Xitang: covered lanes, then dusk

Pick this when the corridor walk is the reason for travelling. A rail-and-taxi day needs roughly 10–13 hours, including 3–4 hours each way and about 4–5 hours in town. For the evening, a confirmed hotel-return car or an overnight stay removes the pressure to reach a distant rail station after dark.

Budget the parts you actually use. Zhujiajiao public streets cost CNY 0; its three-attraction ticket is CNY 60 per person and a short hand-rowed boat starts at CNY 200 per boat. Xitang's official booking page advertises admission from CNY 95, with the dated product controlling what is included. Add both city transfers, both rail fares and taxis for Xitang, food, and any room or guide. Unknown fares are not zero; there is no verified all-in price here.

  1. Secure the return first. For Zhujiajiao, save the metro route all the way to your hotel. For Xitang, issue both dated rail tickets, or get written confirmation of both car legs and the exact hotel drop-off. A one-way transfer does not cover a night return.
  2. Carry the original passport used for rail booking. Use the passport booking and station-entry steps if this is your first Chinese train. Confirm Xitang's passport admission process before paying for a product that describes only Chinese ID-card entry.
  3. Save the hotel door and travel light. Keep its Chinese address, map pin and reception contact offline. Agree bag storage and collection time with reception; keep passports, medicines and a charged phone with you. An overnight branch needs a confirmed room and a new Shanghai bag-collection agreement.

Leave early enough to preserve the visit block. If only an afternoon remains, take a shorter Zhujiajiao walk; if less than half a day remains, keep a Shanghai neighbourhood outing.

Get there and back to the same Shanghai hotel

Start from your Shanghai base

From People's Square, Nanjing Road East, Jing'an Temple or Lujiazui, reach the corresponding Line 2 station and take a westbound train serving 虹桥火车站 / Hongqiao Railway Station. From Xintiandi, use Line 10's Hongqiao Railway Station branch; a train to 航中路 does not reach this interchange. A Hongqiao-area hotel can use its station shuttle or a short taxi only if the actual hotel provides that connection.

Allow 45–75 minutes from a central hotel door to Hongqiao before the onward leg; use more if your mapped route requires it. For Zhujiajiao, remain in the metro and change to Line 17. For Xitang, follow railway departures / 铁路出发 and allow another 45–60 minutes for identity, security and the gate before the booked train. Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 is a different stop.

Zhujiajiao: Line 17 → Exit 1 → Xinfeng Road

  1. At 虹桥火车站, take Line 17 to 朱家角 / Zhujiajiao. Save the reverse journey toward 虹桥火车站. Use the Shanghai Metro timetable for your travel date; SH MaaS / 随申行 is the city's alternative route-planning channel.
  2. From Exit 1, the town operator's walking approach turns left onto 珠溪路 for 220 m, right onto 祥凝浜路 for 920 m, then left onto 新风路 for 170 m. This is about 1.3 km; allow 25–35 minutes with crossings. Use the Xinfeng Road town approach, with the consultation point at 新风路172号.
  3. If that walk is too much, take a taxi to 朱家角古镇游客中心,课植园路555号. Bus 1510 is another option: board near Exit 1 at 珠溪路沪青平公路, alight at 珠湖路课植园路, then walk roughly 500 m toward the visitor centre. This reaches the Kezhi Garden side, so begin the walk there.

Return: retrace to 新风路, turn right onto 祥凝浜路, left onto 珠溪路 and regain the station's Exit 1 approach. Take Line 17 to 虹桥火车站, then Line 2 east toward your saved central stop, or Line 10 toward Xintiandi. Finish the same hotel walk and collect stored bags. Check the whole chain, including the final city line; Line 17 running later does not prove that connection still runs.

For a simple daytime plan, start back from the lanes by 16:30. This is our planning cutoff, not a metro last train. An evening extension needs a checked complete metro connection or the budget and ability to take a car directly to the hotel.

Xitang: Hongqiao train → Jiashan South → South Gate

  1. On 12306, search 上海虹桥 → 嘉善南 and the reverse for your date. Issue both tickets before leaving. 嘉善南 / Jiashan South is the station for this plan; 嘉善 / Jiashan and 嘉兴南 / Jiaxing South require different transfers. Use the departure, duration and fare on the actual order, rather than assuming a particular hourly service.
  2. At 嘉善南, follow signed taxi / 出租车 directions. Show 西塘古镇景区南门,南苑路258号,第一停车场游客入口. Allow 45–60 minutes for the road transfer and arrival, plus any taxi queue. Confirm the permitted drop-off with the driver and walk to the signed ticket/visitor-service entrance; cars do not take you through the old lanes.
  3. The operator lists a tourist direct bus and K222, but its page mixes “first car park” with “Xitang bus station” and supplies no dependable last-service table. For a cheaper outward leg, ask at the rail-station bus area for 西塘景区第一停车场, inspect that departure's stop list and fare, and retain enough time. If it only terminates at 西塘汽车站 / 嘉善北站, use a taxi onward to the saved South Gate. Do not use an unconfirmed bus as the last link to your return train.

Xitang return alarm: leave the inner lanes 2½ hours before the train

Retrace the route below to South Gate, meet the car at the agreed first-car-park pickup, and go to 嘉善南站,铁路出发. The allowance includes roughly 20–30 minutes to the gate, 45–60 minutes for the car and 45–60 minutes at the station. Add 30–60 minutes for holiday congestion, slower walking or a longer live driving estimate.

Planning example: if your issued 嘉善南 departure is 18:30, begin leaving the inner lanes by 16:00, earlier in congestion. This does not assert that an 18:30 service runs daily. At 上海虹桥, take the saved Line 2/10 route back to your hotel, or the signed taxi queue if metro service has ended.

Direct car alternative: arrange pickup at your Shanghai hotel door, South Gate drop-off, a named return meeting point, waiting/overtime charges and the same hotel as the final destination. Allow roughly 2–3 hours each road leg as a planning reserve, subject to the live route and traffic. If the return driver or price is unconfirmed, keep the rail daylight plan or choose Zhujiajiao.

Day trip, night visit or one night in Xitang?

  • Day trip: keep your Shanghai bed. Use Zhujiajiao's 3–4-hour walk or Xitang's 4–5-hour daylight route, with the return alarm fixed before entry. An early Xitang return may leave before the lights are on.
  • Short Xitang evening with a guide: the Xitang Ancient Town Day and Night Tour on Klook, operated by Shanghai C&D Wanda, lists Shanghai hotel pickup, South Gate admission, an approximately two-hour guided visit and a city return. It is a shorter visit than the full walk below; dinner and boat choices affect available time. Before paying, send your actual hotel and passport nationality and obtain the chosen package's admission procedure, pickup area, exact drop-off and return time in writing. The listing's “custom drop-off” is not by itself a same-hotel promise.
  • Overnight: choose this for an unhurried dusk walk followed by another short morning in town. Secure the room and next-day return before releasing a same-day ticket. Morning access or a second entrance may require a different ticket; a room booking does not establish admission or re-entry rights.

Where to stay: favour a hotel with a road-accessible front desk near the old town if you have bags, children or difficulty with stairs. A canal-side inn puts the view closer but may require carrying luggage over bridges and coping with evening noise. For a concrete road-accessible booking option, voco Xitang · 西塘烟雨江南voco酒店 lists 西塘镇环秀街168号, front desk +86 573 8457 8888, and on-site parking. It is a premium hotel example, not a lowest-price pick or a tested stay.

Book for your real party and one night, confirm original-passport check-in, the room's stairs/lift arrangement and late reception. Have the driver take bags to the hotel's own address before sightseeing. Ask reception for the currently open pedestrian entrance and save that return path; do not assume the South Gate car pickup is the hotel entrance. After checkout, take a confirmed car from reception to 嘉善南 for the issued train, then return to your Shanghai hotel for bags or the next stay.

Zhujiajiao: a canal walk, with one optional purchase

Default: 3–4 hours in town, including a meal and pauses. Begin at the Xinfeng Road approach. Follow signs for 北大街 / North Street and 放生桥 / Fangsheng Bridge; return to the same entrance. The attraction is the changing water view between shops, homes and bridges, rather than completing every paid interior.

  1. Xinfeng Road → North Street: start slowly

Walk into the old lanes toward 北大街. Allow 45–60 minutes for the shopfronts and a canal-side pause. The street narrows; keep a small group together and step aside for other walkers. Choose a freshly served snack or a seated meal here, reading the price and portion first.

  2. Fangsheng Bridge: the main view and turn-back point

Continue to 放生桥 for the broad canal view. Climb only if bridge steps fit your group; otherwise enjoy the bank-side view without committing to a crossing. A shorter 90-minute to two-hour town visit can turn here and retrace North Street to Xinfeng Road.

  3. Kezhi Garden side: add it if gardens are the point

For the longer outing, cross toward 西井街 / Xijing Street and continue to 课植园 / Kezhi Garden. Allow 45–60 minutes for the garden if open, plus the walk back. Its pavilions and ponds add a quieter interior to the street visit. If arriving via the visitor centre, reverse this order: garden side → Fangsheng Bridge → North Street → retrace.

  4. Meal → same entrance → metro

Keep the meal along your return rather than crossing town for another food stop. Leave time for the full station walk. A boat or an extra interior is the first thing to drop when the return alarm approaches.

Free lanes, paid gardens and boats are separate choices

The operator's FAQ says the public town is free and paid attractions normally run 08:30–17:00. Kezhi Garden is listed individually at CNY 20. The CNY 60 combined ticket covers Kezhi Garden, Hexin Garden and the Shanghai Helong Art Museum. Buy only the interiors you want. Online combo orders require exchange at the visitor centre during its stated 08:30–15:00 redemption window; a late arrival should use the staffed counter to establish what remains usable.

Boat choice: the hand-rowed boat page lists a CNY 200 short one-way boat for up to six people, including infants, and longer CNY 300 routes. From the Kezhi pier, the short route ends by North Street after Fangsheng Bridge, which can fit the return walk. Confirm that exact landing before paying. These are boat prices, not per-person fares; a return to the original pier costs extra. Boarding steps and the operator's loading decision may rule it out.

The separate CNY 40-per-person metro connection boat is optional. The operator's pages disagree on its last sailing, so use the land route above as your default. Buy a boat ride for the water-level view when weather and queues permit, not to rescue a tight train connection. Visitor enquiries: +86 21 5924 0077.

Xitang: South Gate, covered corridors and back

Allow 4–5 hours for a daylight walk with a meal. The operator's illustrated town map connects the first car park and South Gate approach with 樱花大道 / Cherry Blossom Avenue, 醉园 / Drunk Garden and 环秀桥 / Huanxiu Bridge. Use the same South Gate meeting point for your return; photograph the entrance and agree the car's permitted pickup before entering.

Admission before the first lane

The official booking page lists the scenic area at 南苑路258号, admission from CNY 95 and +86 573 8456 7890. Budget paid scenic-area entry. A claim that some streets are public does not establish free access through this gate, and older “free after a certain hour” advice is not a basis for a night visit.

Foreign-passport limitation: the retrieved operator page does not state its passport redemption process. Before committing non-refundable travel, have the visitor service or your chosen seller confirm the visit date, original passport, staffed redemption point, included interiors, last entry and any overnight re-entry. Use the South Gate staffed ticket/service desk for the confirmed procedure. If a seller only offers Chinese ID-card entry and cannot resolve this, do not buy that product; use a confirmed operator arrangement or change to Zhujiajiao's free-street outing.

  1. South Gate → Cherry Blossom Avenue → Drunk Garden

From the visitor entrance, follow 樱花大道 toward 醉园 and the older lanes. Allow 30–45 minutes to enter, orient yourself and reach the canal area. A garden interior is optional and subject to the actual ticket; retain time for the corridor walk.

  2. Lower West Street → Shipi Lane → Zhongfu Hall

Near 环秀桥, take the 下西街 / Lower West Street side for 石皮弄 / Shipi Lane and 种福堂 / Zhongfu Hall just east of it. The government-hosted town guide places this narrow open-air lane between houses and the hall beside it. Allow 30–45 minutes; skip entering the narrow lane if the queue is dense. The exterior street still gives the contrast between enclosed housing and open water.

  3. Huanxiu Bridge → Yanyu Corridor → Yongning Bridge

Regain 环秀桥, cross to the covered riverside walk and follow 烟雨长廊 / Yanyu Corridor toward 永宁桥 / Yongning Bridge. Allow 60–90 minutes with stops. Look along the canal from the bridge approach; crossing another bridge is optional. The long roof connects everyday shopfronts and the water, making this the core Xitang experience. At dusk, repeat a short part of this corridor for reflections rather than adding distant lanes.

  4. Meal, then retrace to South Gate

Choose a seated place on the corridor or West Street with prices visible; allow 45–60 minutes. Turn back along the covered walk to 环秀桥, regain the 醉园 side and 樱花大道, then return to the saved South Gate/first-car-park pickup. Reserve 20–30 minutes from the inner lanes, more when busy. A blocked bridge or one-way crowd route overrides this sequence: follow staff signs back to 南门 and shorten the visit.

Short version: South Gate → Drunk Garden area → Huanxiu Bridge → a short corridor stretch → same way back. Allow 2–3 hours including pauses; omit Shipi Lane and the hall interior. This is also the better scope when arriving late or travelling with easily tired companions.

Boat or more streets? Keep the walk as the default. If you want a Xitang boat, use the staffed pier to establish today's fare, boarding steps, queue, landing and last sailing before paying. No verified general boat fare or late sailing is promised here. A boat should fit the existing return or hotel path; it should not replace an agreed road transfer.

Children, older travellers, bags and bad weather

  • Children or limited stamina: choose one short walk, one seated meal and an early return. For Zhujiajiao, a car to the visitor centre removes the station approach but not the old-town walking. For Xitang, the short corridor plan still encounters bridge steps; skip the narrow lane and boats if carrying a child or folding a pushchair becomes difficult.
  • Wheelchair or step-free requirement: neither complete route has been audited as step-free. Confirm an accessible entry, toilet and same-bank route with the visitor service before travelling. A taxi to the gate does not remove stone bridges. If a usable route cannot be confirmed, choose an accessible Shanghai outing instead.
  • Luggage: leave large cases at the Shanghai hotel by agreement. For an overnight, take them to the confirmed Xitang hotel reception before entering the lanes. Do not plan on unverified gate lockers or wheeling a heavy case over bridges.
  • Rain and heat: covered Xitang sections provide some shade or shelter, but bridges and the approach remain exposed. Wet paving can be slippery. Take breaks and water; stop the walk during lightning, flooding or staff closure. A roofed corridor is not a reason to continue in severe weather.
  • Busy weekends and holidays: start earlier, allow extra road and gate time, and shorten the farthest walking segment. Check Xitang's current notices and the relevant operator before departure. Temporary night tickets, performances or bus extensions should not be treated as year-round service.

If the return plan starts to fail

Xitang driver cancels or a bus is absent
Stop sightseeing and return to the saved South Gate visitor-service area. Contact the booked operator first; request a replacement to 嘉善南 if the rail buffer still works. Otherwise price a licensed taxi or confirmed ride-hail directly to the Shanghai hotel and accept only an available, agreed trip. Do not wait in an inner lane for a car that cannot enter it.
You will miss the Jiashan South train
Open the issuing channel's change function immediately, then use the station's staffed ticket window with the original passport if needed. The missed-train guide covers order recovery. A later seat is not guaranteed. If no suitable train remains, confirm a direct hotel-return car or a Xitang room and next-day train; tell the Shanghai hotel about your room and stored bags. Do not take an unconfirmed “last bus” to another station.
Zhujiajiao metro connection is over
Stop the canal walk and arrange a licensed taxi or confirmed ride-hail to your saved Shanghai hotel address from a permitted road pickup. Compare the live fare with your available budget before accepting. Ask the visitor service or an open hotel front desk to help locate a pickup if the app or payment fails. A ride to Hongqiao is useful only if the onward connection still works.
Admission fails, weather closes a route, or the group cannot manage the steps
Use the staffed entrance or nearest open visitor-service point, show the order and passport, and ask for the valid entry or refund/change route. Do not enter through an unofficial bypass. Shorten to the confirmed accessible/open area, or leave while the booked return remains usable. Contact the seller before abandoning a prepaid product.

Sources and your next step

Source review: 4 October 2026. Zhujiajiao's operator supplied entry, ticket, boat and station-walk information; Xitang's operator supplied its advertised admission, contact, transport outline and illustrated map. The government-hosted Xitang description supports the named lane and hall. Klook describes its commercial tour, and IHG its own hotel. None is an on-site test of this itinerary.

Journey reserves, walking sequence, meal time and return alarms are editorial planning judgments. Actual tickets, gate notices, traffic, passport redemption, accessibility and room availability still control your dated visit. Xitang's retrieved website uses HTTP; its HTTPS service failed during this check. Use the published phone or a verified booking channel for personal details and payment.

Next: choose your town, save the Chinese endpoints and secure the relevant return. Use the Shanghai guide if you are still deciding where a water-town day fits among the city's other outings.
