Stay two nights for the old city, or three for the museum and a full performance-park day. Choose surviving Song pagodas, later temples or modern themed parks. Keep one old-city hotel.

Eight sights at a glance
Times below are editorial visiting allowances, excluding queues and travel. These eight are choices, not a checklist for one stay. Prices are per adult unless stated; none is a live inventory quote.

CNY 30 adult in the operator’s published adjustment; check event terms
CNY 45 published full ticket; festival products can differ
7. Kaifeng Fu 开封府Recreated government compound and Bao Zheng stories · Baogong Lake
Allow
2–3 hours; evening product separately
Entry
CNY 65 day admission or CNY 90 published night product
8. Fan Pagoda 繁塔Early Song brick reliefs · southeast of the old city
Allow

Entry
Separate ticket; check price and opening before the outward ride
How long to stay, and what you give up
Three nights is the comfortable mixed choice: arrive, check into one hotel, and eat near Gulou. Give one full day to #3 and its optional show; use the other for a reserved morning at #2, a hotel rest and #1. Add #4 + #5 only if you have a substantial arrival or departure half-day. Return to the same bed after each outing; leave on a separately planned station transfer.
Two nights suits a focused city visit: with an early arrival, visit #1, then eat around Gulou. Use the full day for #4 + #5 and #6, with time back at the hotel before dinner; leave the next morning. This gives up the western museum and the full garden experience. If performances are your reason for coming, replace that city day with #3, and keep only #1 around arrival.
A day trip from Zhengzhou can work for one theme. For architecture, use a morning train, taxi to #1, lunch, then #4 + #5 before the booked return. For theatre, spend the whole available period at #3 and leave before your train transfer. Both versions lose the slow night-market evening and the museum; do not add an evening show unless you change to a Kaifeng overnight stay. Leave luggage at your Zhengzhou hotel when it agrees to hold it.
For #4 → #5 → Gulou, allow a relaxed half-day including lunch and connecting walks; #6 can fill a separate two-hour period before dinner. For #2 → hotel → #1, allow most of a day with two cross-city taxi legs and a rest. These are planning allowances, not measured traffic times. On a low-walking trip, choose the museum and one temple or pagoda, use taxis, and omit the pavilion stairs and a full park circuit.
Keep one old-city hotel for every night
Default area: Gulou–Shudian Street 鼓楼–书店街. It puts food, #4 and #5 within the central cluster and leaves the northern sights as taxi outings. Pick a room off the busiest market frontage if sleep matters. Confirm the actual building, lift access and the nearest car-accessible pickup point: a “Gulou” hotel label covers more than the square itself.
Choose the northern lake area for the garden and a quieter retreat.Pullman Kaifeng Jianye 开封建业铂尔曼酒店, 开封市龙亭区龙亭北路16号, is a named upscale option beside the northern parks. It suits a #3/#6-led stay and hotel downtime; central night-market meals involve a separate return ride. The operator supplies rooms and booking conditions; no live room price is quoted.
Choose a park inn only for a park-led stay. Qingming Garden’s own Mantingfang Inn 满庭芳精品客栈 and Guanyi Inn 官驿客栈 are listed by the operator at the park, 龙亭西路5号,清明上河园内. They shorten the late-show-to-bed journey but make city sightseeing dependent on the booked gate and re-entry arrangement. Confirm passport check-in, luggage arrival, after-hours access and exactly which admission is included before paying.
For a Pullman stay, keep the whole loop concrete: Kaifeng North → taxi to 龙亭北路16号,建业铂尔曼酒店 → leave bags → taxi to the Qingming Garden gate on your ticket. After the show, meet the booked driver at the agreed exit and return to that same hotel address. Collect bags there before the departure ride to Kaifeng North, unless your issued return ticket names another station. For either park inn, obtain its after-hours walking route from the show exit and reception contact before going to the performance.
The western new town works for a museum or business-led stay, but it adds rides to the evening food streets. For this first visit, keep the old-city base. Book every night at the same confirmed property, send the hotel your passport nationality and arrival time, and keep its Chinese address offline. A hotel listing is not proof that a particular room, late check-in or package is available.
Zhengzhou and Kaifeng: match the station, then go to the hotel
Search China Railway 12306 for the exact date and both endpoints. Zhengzhou East 郑州东站 and Zhengzhou 郑州站 are different stations; a fast train is useful only if you can reach its departure station. Book your departure from Kaifeng as well as your arrival. Use the train guide for the wider ticketing task.
Kaifeng North 开封北站
The high-speed gateway northwest of the old city. Use the signed taxi rank or a prearranged hotel car to your named hotel; drop luggage before sightseeing. As a cautious planning allowance, keep 45–60 minutes for the road transfer in ordinary conditions, plus exit/queue time; congestion can take longer.
Kaifeng Station 开封站
The station south of the old city, with its own train services and pickup. Tell the driver 开封站, not 开封北站. Keep roughly 20–40 minutes for the hotel road leg as a planning allowance; verify which exit your driver uses.
Songcheng Road 宋城路站
A separate western intercity stop. Compare the actual service on 12306 with the other Kaifeng stations before buying; its name is not another label for Kaifeng North. Use a taxi to the hotel and allow a separate western road transfer.
From Zhengzhou Xinzheng Airport 郑州新郑国际机场: compare a date-specific rail connection with a hotel-arranged car all the way to Kaifeng. If rail requires a Zhengzhou transfer, retain both station names and a proper connection margin. For a late flight, the direct prebooked car avoids chasing a final train; obtain a written price and meeting point. Do not rely on the expired festival shuttles sometimes shown in old Kaifeng guides.
The return begins at the hotel. Collect bags, take the booked car to the station printed on the ticket, then allow station security and boarding time. Ask the hotel the previous evening for a traffic-aware departure time; start with at least 60 minutes at the station before the train, on top of the road allowance, and increase it for holidays or document help. After a night show, sleep in Kaifeng and take a following-day train.
Book in this order
Choose your anchor and nights. For the museum, choose an open day and its reservation slot. For Dongjing Menghua, select the actual date and seat category, then read included garden entry before adding another ticket.
Hold one hotel and the exact inbound/outbound trains. Confirm passport check-in and late arrival directly. Keep cancellable arrangements where a performance or reservation is still unresolved.
Complete real-name attraction entries. Use the official channels above with the visitor’s document type. Keep the confirmation and original passport. If an online form accepts only a Chinese ID, ask the venue how it handles a passport; do not enter a borrowed or invented ID.
Set the road legs. Station → hotel, hotel → the named gate, that exit → the same hotel, and hotel → booked station. A late-show pickup needs an agreed car-accessible meeting point outside the crowd.
For a modest, non-show example, the published full-adult references for #1 + #6 total CNY 75 (30 + 45); #2’s permanent galleries are free. A #3 daytime ticket adds CNY 120, making CNY 195 for those entries. This is ticket arithmetic, not a trip quote: festival changes, optional products, transport, hotel and meals are extra, and #4/#5/#8 have no verified price in this guide.
What to see, with entry and return details
1. Iron Pagoda 铁塔
Start here if you want to see something that actually survived from the Northern Song capital. The tower’s dark glazed brick gives it its iron-like appearance; look closer for moulded figures and the repeated layers of brackets under its eaves. Its narrow vertical silhouette makes a useful contrast with the broad, reconstructed streets at #3.
Hours
The operator’s notice, reproduced by Henan Traffic Radio, gives 08:30–18:00, ticket sales ending 17:30; holidays can override this. Visit in daylight. Read the published adjustment.
Tickets
The same notice lists CNY 30 adult admission. Check the official WeChat account 开封市铁塔公园订阅号 for the current product, including any event or partner-park entitlement. The old free-park announcement is not a safe present-day price. Tower climbing is not promised here.
Time
1–1½ hours (editorial allowance)
Chinese address
河南省开封市顺河回族区北门大街210号,铁塔景区
Getting there
Take a taxi from the Gulou or Longting hotel area to 铁塔景区入口; return to that hotel, or ride west to #6. Do not route through the university as a guaranteed public shortcut.
How to visit
Walk around the tower at ground level and compare the glazed reliefs on different faces. Keep the visit about the building, rather than expecting a night show: the published adjustment suspended the old light show. A restoration barrier or a closed stair does not prevent the exterior-focused plan, unless the whole park closes.

Use the museum to connect the city’s scattered remains. Historical objects and the story of successive capitals give substance to the Song imagery outside. This is the best indoor anchor for a hot or wet afternoon, but its western location makes it a separate outing from the old-city sights.
Hours
Normally Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00; Monday closed except holidays and special arrangements. The detailed visitor rules stop ticket issue at 16:00 and entry at 16:30; the overview also labels 16:00 as the cutoff. Arrive before 16:00, preferably with a morning reservation, and read holiday notices.
Tickets
Permanent exhibitions and public areas are free; special exhibitions, some activities and paid guiding are separate. In WeChat, open 开封市博物馆 → 预约入口 or 开封市博物馆官方预约. Choose the morning or afternoon slot and retain the success QR code. The museum explicitly permits foreign visitors unable to book online to bring a passport to the visitor-centre manual desk for an on-site reservation, subject to capacity.
Time
2–3 hours, plus both road legs (editorial allowance)
Chinese address
河南省开封市郑开大道与六大街交叉口,开封市博物馆新馆
Getting there
Taxi to 开封市博物馆新馆 from your hotel; arrange the reverse ride. This is not the former museum beside Baogong Lake. Use a separate half-day rather than treating it as a short walk from Gulou.
How to visit
Begin with the permanent city-history displays, then choose an available specialist gallery. Ask which galleries are open before spending time on temporary exhibitions. Bring the original passport used for the reservation. If the QR process fails, use the manual desk; for advance help call +86 371 23299192 during museum service hours. No live booking or passport admission was tested for this guide.
This is the theatrical choice: recreated waterside streets, the arched Rainbow Bridge and performers turn the famous Qingming scroll into a place to wander. Opened in 1998, it is a modern interpretation of Song urban life, not a surviving Song neighbourhood. Choose it for spectacle and atmosphere, with enough time to pause between performances.
Hours
The operator FAQ lists 09:00–22:00, while its live programme contains earlier and later sessions. Treat the ticket’s admission window and the current programme as the travel-day check; rain or snow can change performances.
Tickets
The published adult daytime price is CNY 120. Official ticket products distinguish park admission from 大宋·东京梦华, the reserved-seat water show. A show product may include park entry: read its dates, entry window and re-entry terms before buying a second ticket. Night-only admission, boats, meals, costume hire and optional attractions are included only when the product says so; this guide does not quote a live show-seat price.
Time
5–7 hours; longer with an evening show (editorial allowance)
Chinese address
河南省开封市龙亭区龙亭西路5号,清明上河园
Getting there
Go to the gate printed on the order; 迎宾门 (Yingbin Gate) is a named programme and arrival point. Agree the exit and pickup with the hotel or driver before a late show; return to your same Kaifeng hotel.
How to visit
At entry, choose a handful of performances from the current programme, then use the intervening time around the bridge, streets and water. Buy the evening seat first if it is the reason for coming, and confirm whether its ticket already admits you earlier. Keep a park visit and a night-market meal on different evenings if both matter. For a passport or payment problem, ask the operator at +86 371 25663819 before relying on an ID-card-only checkout.
The temple had an important place in the Tang and Song city, but the buildings seen today largely follow Qing reconstruction after flooding. The octagonal hall and its four-sided, many-armed Guanyin are the strongest reason to visit. This is a place of worship as well as a historical stop; it offers a quieter, more focused encounter than a performance park.
Hours
Choose a morning or early-afternoon visit. A current operator timetable could not be verified; confirm opening and last entry with the temple before a special journey, especially around ceremonies.
Tickets
Buy the day’s temple admission at its own ticket counter after confirming the price. The public contact for 开封大相国寺 is +86 371 25978502; the official WeChat identifier is kfdxgs. Current fare, concession and online passport rules remain unverified; an old reseller discount is not the standard price.
Time
1–1½ hours (editorial allowance)
Chinese address
河南省开封市鼓楼区自由路西段,大相国寺
Getting there
Walk south from the Gulou food area if the route suits your mobility, or take a short taxi to 大相国寺. Combine with #5 and dinner rather than adding a cross-city museum transfer.
How to visit
Follow the central hall sequence to the octagonal hall, taking time to see the sculpture from its permitted sides. Respect worshippers and posted photography rules. Do not assume that the temple’s musical tradition means a public concert will occur during your visit.
This compact merchant guild hall adds a different layer to a city often sold entirely as Song. Its brick, stone and wood carving rewards slow looking: compare the relief work on the screen wall, gateway and hall details. It is a good choice when one more large park would blur into the others.
Hours
The ticket platform’s listing shows 08:00–18:00 in summer and 08:00–17:30 in winter. These are platform guidance, not a newly confirmed operator timetable; choose a morning or early-afternoon visit and call before relying on a late entry.
Tickets
Use the venue counter or check 开封山陕甘会馆 in WeChat. The listed venue telephone is +86 371 25954801. A current first-party price and any combined-ticket terms were not accessible, so no fixed price is promised. A Dragon Pavilion ticket does not automatically admit you here.
Time
45–75 minutes (editorial allowance)
Chinese address
河南省开封市龙亭区徐府街,山陕甘会馆
Getting there
Use 山陕甘会馆 as the map pin; official heritage and commercial listings use different street numbers. It fits the central-city block with #4, Gulou and Shudian Street; use a taxi for a tired or low-walking group.
How to visit
Look above eye level as well as at the main facade; the craft is the point of this short visit. Ask at entry whether a venue explanation is available, rather than assuming English guiding. This is Qing-era merchant heritage, not a Song government building.
The long approach between the lakes and the elevated pavilion give Kaifeng a sense of scale. The visible pavilion belongs to the city’s later imperial history; the palace-site association does not make the standing halls an original Northern Song palace. Choose it for the approach, lake setting and viewpoint rather than another full day of shows.
Hours
The operator’s standing guide, originally posted in 2022 and read for this guide, lists 08:00–21:30. Use daylight for the pavilion and confirm current last entry; that listing does not guarantee today’s night programme or access to every area.
Tickets
The same guide publishes CNY 45 full admission and warns that festival prices vary. Confirm the actual date and product through the operator at +86 371 22198151. Seasonal flower displays and separately marketed activities must be checked against the purchased ticket.
Time
1½–2 hours (editorial allowance)
Chinese address
河南省开封市龙亭区宋都御街北端,龙亭景区南门
Getting there
Use the south entrance from Songdu Imperial Street for the lake approach. North and south gates are separate pickup points: agree the gate when booking the ride back to your hotel. Combine with #1 by taxi or with the northern hotel base.
How to visit
Approach along the central axis and look back across the lakes before deciding on the stairs. The elevated hall requires a substantial stair climb; a lake-level visit is the simpler low-walking alternative. Autumn chrysanthemums can change the park’s emphasis and ticketing; consult the season’s notice without building the stay around an assumed festival date.
Choose this for the stories of the magistrate Bao Zheng, staged court scenes and the layout of an official compound. The tourist complex is a modern reconstruction, not the excavated Song prefectural office. It is more compact and story-led than #3; much of the spoken performance is in Chinese, so the architecture and staging matter more if you do not follow the dialogue.
Hours
The current guide separates daytime entry, ending at 17:30, from night operation to 22:00; older seasonal times remain elsewhere on the site. A daytime arrival around 09:00–15:00 avoids relying on those conflicting edges. Recheck the dated programme for an evening visit.
Tickets
The operator lists CNY 65 per adult day visit and a separate CNY 90 南衙千秋月 night product, described as permitting same-day repeat entry. Verify those entitlements on the issued order instead of buying both automatically. Published online instructions use Chinese ID-card entry; ask the counter or +86 371 23983319 how to issue and validate your passport ticket.
Taxi from the hotel to 开封府, on the north shore of the eastern Baogong Lake. 包公祠 is a different attraction on the western lake. Return to the same hotel, with a prearranged pickup for an evening show.
How to visit
Choose the main hall, official courtyards and one scheduled scene rather than racing to every short performance. If #3 is already your main theatre day, add this only for a strong interest in Bao Zheng; otherwise use the time for #4 or #5 and a meal.
The broad lower tower and small upper stages look quite different from the slim Iron Pagoda. Repeated Buddha reliefs on the bricks make this a rewarding second pagoda for an architecture enthusiast. It is a surviving Song monument, but it is out of the central sightseeing cluster; a short stay should not add it simply to complete a list.
Hours
The ticket platform lists 08:30–18:30 for May–October and 08:30–17:30 for November–April. Confirm with the venue before the cross-city ride; current operator hours and interior access were not independently obtained.
Tickets
A separate admission is required; this guide has no verified current operator price. The listed ticket-service telephone is +86 371 23929866. Ask specifically for 繁塔, the opening day, adult ticket and passport purchase; do not substitute an annual-pass offer with restricted eligibility.
Time
45–75 minutes, plus a separate road trip (editorial allowance)
Chinese address
河南省开封市禹王台区繁塔西街30号,繁塔
Getting there
Take a taxi to 繁塔 and arrange the return to your hotel. It is nearer Kaifeng Station than the northern lake parks, but do not combine it with a tight train connection or assume luggage storage.
How to visit
Concentrate on the surviving exterior and the varying reliefs. This is a short specialist visit, not a climb guaranteed by the entry ticket. If entry cannot be confirmed, keep #1 and use the saved half-day for the museum or a slower old-city meal.
Eat around the old city, with an evening left for it
Gulou Night Market 鼓楼夜市, around 开封市鼓楼区鼓楼广场, is the straightforward first evening: look at several posted menus, then order a few small portions instead of one large mixed platter. Pair it with #4 and #5, or arrive after resting at the hotel. The market is a busy food setting, not a quiet restaurant; exact stall hours and weather closures vary. Finish while your return ride is still easy, or walk back only if your hotel route is comfortable.
Guantangbao 灌汤包 are thin-skinned soup-filled buns, usually with meat: lift gently, bite a small opening and let the broth cool. Choose a seated restaurant when you want an unhurried meal; Di Yi Lou 第一楼 in the Gulou area is a long-established name to look for, rather than a promise of a short queue or a fixed menu. Huangmenyu 黄焖鱼 is a soft braised-fish dish; expect small bones. Chao liangfen 炒凉粉, stir-fried starch jelly, gives another texture, and hu la tang 胡辣汤 belongs more naturally to breakfast than to a rushed post-show snack.
For vegetarian eating, ask about meat stock, lard and toppings even when the main ingredient is starch or vegetables: 不要肉、肉汤和猪油 means “no meat, meat broth or lard.” For an allergy, show the specific ingredient in Chinese and ask about shared preparation; do not infer safety from a dish name. Kaifeng has Hui Muslim food traditions, but a stall is not halal simply because it sells beef or lamb: look for its own 清真 identification and ask.
After #3, the park’s Tokyo Food Street 东京食坊 is the convenient food option before the show. Save Gulou for another evening instead of crossing town and risking re-entry. Shudian Street 书店街 provides an adjoining browse for books, calligraphy and small souvenirs; inspect provenance before treating a decorative “antique” as a historical object. Packaged peanut sweets 花生糕 make an easier purchase, with ingredients and baggage needs checked.
Season, extra parks and a plan that can change
Spring and autumn generally suit long outdoor visits; summer heat and rain make a museum period and a hotel break more useful. Winter shortens comfortable time outside, especially beside water. Autumn chrysanthemum displays can bring crowds and special products; use the current season’s operator notices rather than assumed annual festival dates. Outdoor performances can change with rain, wind and maintenance.
Wansui Mountain Wuxia City 万岁山武侠城 is the major alternative to #3 for martial-arts fiction, character interaction and a busy performance-led day. Choose one of the two on a short first visit: Qingming Garden emphasises the scroll-inspired town and water-show setting; Wansui emphasises wuxia spectacle. Use the operator’s official channel to confirm its current ticket, any partner-park entry and show reservations. It is a modern themed park, and it replaces a full sightseeing day rather than fitting between temples.
If a show is cancelled: follow the issued ticket’s cancellation/refund terms; park entry may already have been used. Keep the hotel and use a food evening. If the museum is closed or full: use #4 + #5, with opening confirmed, and keep the museum for another open slot. If the weather is severe: do not assume an indoor museum remains open; check its current notice and stay with the hotel plan until transport and venues resume.
State Bridge and the Bian River archaeological site 州桥及汴河遗址 matter to the Song-capital story, but a current general-public entry route was not verified; they are not counted as an available ninth attraction. For original Buddhist stone art, continue to Luoyang and Longmen as a separate stay. For the wider choice between Kaifeng, Shaolin and other bases, return to the Henan guide; neither is an add-on after a full Kaifeng park day.
Sources and what was checked
Public sources were read on . Older publication dates remain meaningful: reading an old standing guide does not make its timetable a live guarantee. Visiting times, combinations and transfer buffers are editorial planning allowances; this guide is not based on a claimed on-site visit.
Qingming Garden visitor FAQ, operator products and programme: modern-park identity, CNY 120 daytime reference, separate show product, gates and contact. Live seats, passport purchase, re-entry and optional inclusions were not tested.
Kaifeng Fu operator and visitor guide: CNY 65 day/CNY 90 night products and conflicting seasonal time text; passport flow remains untested.
Dragon Pavilion standing guide: published full fare, event exception, hours, entrances and phone. HTTP content was readable; its HTTPS certificate did not validate during this check.
